This is the only recording of Sviatoslav Richter playing the Chopin Second Concerto, from a concert performance of 1966. (He never played the other Chopin Concerto.) It's a completely idiomatic, thoroughly convincing performance, filled with color and poetry from the piano. Evgeny Svetlanov's orchestral accompaniment is rather inert (and distantly miked), but never mind. The Franck (1953) is a rarity, issued previously only on a 10" Russian LP, while the Saint-Saëns, from 1952, has frequently been published. Neither recording has outstanding sound quality but both performances are excellent collaborations. --Leslie Gerber
