Good Performances, Well Recorded.......2004-01-17

To be honest, I am hardly an expert on classical music - I buy them generally for listening at work. I found the performances very good - Tafelmusik performs using instruments and presumably playing techniques from the composer's period, so perhaps this is how Wolfgang intended it to sound. I really bought it for Die Entführung aus dem Serial, which is not recorded as frequently as most of the other pieces on this CD, but every track is well done. The recording is pretty well done too IMHO. Enjoyable listening. This really deserves 4-1/2 stars rather than four.

The best "Abduction" I've heard.......1998-10-06

This is my favorite among the presently-available recordings of "Entfuhrung". All of the performers give more-than-adequate readings of their roles, and the pure, beautiful voices complement Mozart's music nearly ideally. The tempos are generally well-chosen and lively.

Kurt Streit's Belmonte is a real pleasure to hear, if a shade cool in emotion; the Pedrillo of Robert Gambill is no less enjoyable. Szmytka comes as close to an ideal Blonde as I've heard, and Missenhardt's Osmin is agilely sung--and suitably cantankerous. Cheryl Studer, as Konstanze, is not quite on top form, but she gives a very good performance nonetheless. There is a slight mechanical quality to some of her coloratura, but this is a minor point in light of the expressive portrayal she gives; "Traurigkeit" is very moving and intense. "Martern aller Arten" is nicely flashy, and the duet with Belmonte is beautiful. All in all, a very attractive performance.

A good version of Serail... most of the arias and duettos are well sung... still not a brilliant version...

Top of the line Abduction.......2001-06-21

This opera has challenged quite a few of the most ambitious German sopranos of the post-war period; even Schwarzkopf tried to navigate the heroic arias Mozart wrote for Konstanze, but though she had the 'expression' she didn't have the technique. Conversely, those who had the coloratura didn't have the style. The tenor part of Belmonte is no easier, especially if the aria 'Ich baue ganz auf deine Staerke' isn't cut. Fritz Wunderlich sang it beautifully, but his Konstanze was basically a soubrette (Erika Koeth--on DG conducted by Jochum). Bruno Weil's cast is fantastic: Cheryl Studer has both the style and the technique, and so does the tenor Kurt Streit. Their German is beautiful too. Same for the others. The orchestra, not known for panache, plays beautifully under Weil. There is hardly a passage that doesn't sound more fully expressed than it has ever been heard before. Of all the Mozart opera recordings I've heard recently, this one is actually the only one that really sets a new standard.

Wonderful music from the greatest composer in history!.......2002-02-15

The music selection on this CD summarizes the ingenious mind of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. In his 35 years, he composed some of the most beautiful and stunning music, ever heard. This CD features the best of Mozart's greatest compositions....of course, all of his best work couldn't be put on just 1 disc. I would highly recommend: MOZART More Greatest Hits to compliment this first, stellar CD! SONY Classical has done a terrific job of featuring the top conductors, soloists and musicians, in the world, on their labeled CDs. Don't pass these by....get them here at, the always dependable, Amazon.com! Bravo!!!!

A mixed bag of favourites.......2003-03-17

This collection offers most for the person who needs to possess a musical moment associated with a particular favourite movie. In my case, it was primarily the song associated with "Diva", La Wally but there were many others. And I have come to enjoy the selections I did not know before.
It doesn't do too well if you wish a classical selection to simply listen to at one stretch: the mixed styles and speeds don't support such a listening. Try following the theme to "Raging Bull" with "The Barber of Seville" for example!
I gave this collection a high score because it really does fill many gaps in my collection for tracks I associate with favourite movies, but for which I do not require the entire source music. One major dissapointment though is that the version here of Wagner's " The Ride of the Valkyries" does not include the choral vocal which gave that sequence in "Apocalypse Now" such vigour, menace and force.
