Rossini's Overtures are absolute jewels of the Classical period. He used them as his musical "calling cards," and with the exception of William Tell, there's absolutely no relationship between the overture and opera it introduces. The famous Barber of Seville overture, for example, was used previously for two tragic operas, including one called Elizabeth, Queen of England! All they were supposed to do was entertain the audience and let them know that the real business was about to begin. And that's just what they've been doing ever since. This comprehensive collection, at two discs for the price of one, will keep you in Rossini for a good, long time. --David Hurwitz

King of overtures on display.......2007-03-07
This 2-disc set contains 14 overtures by the master of this musical form himself, G. Rossini. The music quality is good - standard for digital, the orchestration is clear, and each CD provides about 1 hour of good, lively music. The choice of music is also great, making this set a great buy.
Dynamic Rossini.......2005-04-26
For Rossini lovers, this album gives you a sample of Rossini at his best. The dynamic range of the composer, his verve and vitality delivered in the most popular overtures ever written.
The quality of the recordings is very good, and should satify any and all Rossini fans. I love to kick back, with a set of ear phones and absorb the incredible sound and muscularity of Rossini. Well worth the price of admission.
High Excitement.......2005-03-02
I originally bought the LP versions way back before CDs were introduced. High excitement is the best way I can describe the performances. I have heard nothing since to equal Chailly's energetic read. I haven't gotten this CD version yet, but the first volume one did have better quality miking then the second volume. The price makes it worth just buying the CD instead of trying to digitize my LPs.
Amuse-Bocuse for the Ears!.......2004-09-10
Just as amuse-boche is meant to entertain and tempt the tastebuds for the coming courses in a gourmet meal, so does the overture function in the operatic banquet.
Rossini is one of the greatest overture composers, and here is collection of fourteen of his best!
They are soaring and delightful. Especially captivated by some that were new to me, causing one to want to followup with the opera-- a brilliant way to cause interest in operatic world. These included the likes of Otell, Semiramide and Le Siege de Corinthe.
Amazing and vibrant double CD collection!
All the Rossini I need!.......2003-06-30
As far as I'm concerned, I don't need to search the field for any other Rossini overture CDs--this 2-CD set has it covered. Chailly's interpretations of these pieces are wonderfully exuberant, and the National Philharmonic plays with precision and flair. These CDs have become the standard I use to judge other recordings of Rossini overtures. Granted, they're not perfect: As another reviewer pointed out, Chailly takes some passages differently than we're used to hearing them (the end of the Barber of Seville overture is faster than usual, for example). However, the orchestra is so competent and the conductor so assured that these small, occasional differences are refreshing rather than annoying. As well, there are (very) occasional moments where the orchestra slips a little out of synch, but only because they're having so much fun playing the music. This is Rossini the way it was meant to sound--playful, melodious and energetic to the end.

Excellent performance and recording.......2007-02-02
If you like Rossini, this is an a must-have recording. Sure, he tended to write the same pieces over and over again, but they are utterly delightful. These performances by Neville Marriner and his personal orchestra are precise, and the fun inherent in many of these works does not get lost in the shuffle. The orchestra is blessed with excellent woodwind players; just listen to the oboe on some of the really fast passages.
Nice recorded sound. I really don't have anything bad to say about this entire package. It's almost a desert island recording for times where Mahler or Beethoven might be a little (or a lot) heavy.
Very Nice.......2005-03-17
Yes, these overtures may be cliched, but every classical collector should probably have them. Marriner, as usual, gives great performances, and the sound quality is very good.
Sparkling Performances.......2003-09-15
I only have glowing things to say about this set of Rossini overtures. First of all, Rossini's overtures are brilliant gems. They are light, fun and full of life!! Secondly, Marriner's conducting is marvellous. The performance sparkle like precious diamonds. Everything is very enjoyable, there's not a single boring number, unlike many other discs you purchase. And to top it off, it comes at a terrific bargain price. 3 very full CDs - 75 mins, 30 mins and 65 mins - of top notch music at seven dollars a piece is incredible.

Customer Reviews:
Wonderful.......2005-10-02
This is a fabulous album!!! Her arias by Handel, Gluck, Mozart, and Rossini are unbelievable. Her and Bryn Terfel sound great together, especially on the "Dun'que io son" from Il Barbiere di Siviglia. The Handel duet from Rinaldo, featuring the acclaimed countertenor David Daniels is brilliant!! I, however, do not care for the duets with Pavarotti. Her voice is too light to sing Verdi. Pavarotti's voice is also not what it used to be. I'm still rating it with five stars, because despite a couple of bad duets with Pavarotti, the album is a wonderful collection of Cecilia Bartoli.
PLEASE..........2005-08-31
I don't understand why Cecilia Bartoli is loved for a lot of people. In a many cases, there are high notes with estridence, gasping, and also the vibrato is excesive . If you want to enjoy a great Rossini's opera, listen Maria Callas and Victoria de los Angeles.
A great introduction to CB.......2003-10-13
Cecilia Bartoli has been around since the 1980s, and her career has been nothing short of spectacular. This CD provides a great introduction to her world, but most Bartoli lovers will already have most of the tracks on this CD. This CD opens with 2 extracts from her recording of Rinaldo, with David Daniels in the title role. She gives a moving performance of Lascia ch'io pianga, and a delightful rendition of the duettino with David Daniels. The CD then moves on to excerpts from Cecilia's most popular album to date - The Vivaldi Album. This album consists of mainly world premiere recordings, and the 3 samples we get here show Cecilia's ability to move, amazing coloratura ability, and the skill to popularize rare pieces. Indeed, the next samples, from the Gluck CD, also contains world premiere recordings, and we get to hear 'Di questa cetra in seno' beautifully sung, and also 'Se mai senti', which is devastatingly heartbreaking. Of course, we get a large portion of Mozart, a composer central to her career, and Cherubino's 2 arias, are delightfully sung, as is 'Un moto di gioia'. 2 duets with Bryn Terfel are also featured, from their album Cecilia and Bryn. Rossini is another composer associated strongly with her, and she show off her vocal acrobatics and extraordinary range in 3 excerpts, from Le Cenerentola, Il Barbiere, and Il Turco in Italia. Lastly, there are 2 previously unreleased duets with Pavarotti, which are more commercial, but they are fun nonetheless.
Overall, this is a great introduction to Cecilia and her singing, though if you are already a fanatic you will not find much new here.
Not her best work!.......2003-02-10
Don't get me wrong, Cecilia Bartoli is one of my favorite singers, but this just was not her best work! Most of the pieces on this CD are the'popular' arias, but are not the arias that represent her the best. If you want to hear cecilia at her best listen to her Rossini CD's, as well as her Italian Songbook CD.
Sampler of Bartoli's recordings over the years.......2002-12-01
Soprano Cecilia Bartoli garnered international acclaim with her first recording fourteen years ago and has continued to build on that success. This CD is a sampler of her recorded work over those years, supplemented by two new duets with Luciano Pavarotti. Ranging from the languid sorrow of Handel's Lascia ch'io pianga to the good cheer of Verdi's Libiamo ne' lieti calici, these operatic duets and arias are a wonderful cross-section of Bartoli's career to date, demonstrating her remarkable range of emotional expression.
Bartoli is a master of technique, as shown in her astounding performance of Vivaldi's frenetic show-stopper Anch'il mar par che sommerga. She also has a glorious timbral command, darkening her tone color to superb effect in that same composer's Gelido in ogni vena. This is one of the highlights of the disc, as Bartoli adds an eerie breathy quality to her voice, singing at the softest possible dynamic level, exactly matching the effect of the text "I feel my blood like ice coursing through every vein./The shade of my lifeless son afflicts me with terror."
Although the majority of pieces are from Bartoli's favored Baroque and Classical period, she also dips into the Romantic era, including works by the Italians Gioachino Rossini, Gaetano Donizetti, and Giuseppe Verdi, although the inclusion of these last two works seems to be at least partially for the marketing strength of Pavarotti's name. Most of the music will be unfamiliar to all but the most devout of operatic connoisseurs, but the "greatest hits" format should draw a wider audience. Only the Verdi and Mozart pieces are likely to be well-known. Certainly the limpid beauty of Bartoli's voice, the artistry of her interpretation, and her unsurpassed technical skill makes this disc worth owning.

Amazon.com essential recording
This Pirandello-like, 1814 comedy of manners has long lived in the shadow of Rossini's better-known L'Italiana in Algeri, but this recording, more than either of its predecessors, allows it to bloom in all its ironic loveliness. Cecilia Bartoli, a born comedian, sings expressively and angelically while her character behaves devilishly, and the supporting cast is no less effective. Riccardo Chailly brings out all of the score's humor, and all of its warmth as well. A little-known gem for fans of The Barber of Seville. --Robert Levine
Customer Reviews:
Excepcional Recording of Rossini.......2007-05-16
From the remote 1954 when Callas registered for EMI this Rossini's 'dramma buffo' I've never listened and enjoy an excellent version like this. Chailly delight from the podium and give it to the cast with a dazzling performance. Bartoli makes a beautiful Fiorilla with your charming voice and expressiveness; Corbelli with your voice and portrayal of the tortured Geronio is a fine comediant. Vargas, Pertusi and De Candia are all excellent, but one pleasant revelation is the Zaida of Laura Poverelli, great and enjoyable voice ant performance. The quality sound and balance of this London register are also very good. Essential recording for all opera lovers.
A delightful Rossini rarity.......2004-07-09
Gioacchino Rossini wrote two kinds of comic opera. First there was the manic, almost farcial "opera buffa" (eg. THE BARBER OF SEVILLE). Then there was a kind of serio-comedy akin to the "dramma giocoso" of Mozart. IL TURCO IN ITALIA (1816) definitely falls in the latter category (as does LA CENERENTOLA). This little-known opera is a real gem. It is about a Muslim prince (Selim, sung by Michele Pertusi in fine voice) from Turkey and the comedy and conflict that ensue when he visits Italy. A clash of cultures ensues as the polygamous Selim tries to steal Don Geronio's young wife, Fiorilla (mezzo-soprano Cecilia Bartoli, singing a role written for soprano). While the opera does not have as many memorable melodies or outstanding individual numbers as THE BARBER or CENERENTOLA, it is still a funny, compassionate comedy with some of Rossini's best music. The opera is surprisingly contemporary in feel, especially in the character of the Poet, who "writes" the opera as it unfolds. Bartoli, Pertusi, and Vargas are all excellent, but for me the stand-out is Alessandro Corbelli, who portrays the henpecked husband Geronio with musicality and sympathy. Just about any opera set with Corbelli on it is worth getting, as he is an extremely fine singing-actor in the Mozart/Rossini repertoire.
PURE ROSSINI!.......2003-08-10
This is the best version of 'Il turco in Italia' that you can find at the moment at your store. Cecilia Bartoli makes a really good Fiorilla, Alessandro Corbelli is a very funny Don Geronio and Roberto De Candia is a great Poet. Laura Polverelli is an autentic luxe for the short but difficult role of Zaida. Ramón Vargas has a little voice, but his voice is beautiful and he is well as Narciso. And what about Michele Pertusi? He sings very well, but he's not the perfect singer for comical repertory. Maybe here's the only negative point of these recording.
Chailly makes with her direction a pure rossinian version, with the great orchrestra and chorus of Scalla di Milano.
Sure, you must buy this!
Exceptional Turco.......2003-08-08
This is the very best version of "Turco" in the market today. Cecilia Bartoli makes a really good "sing lesson" with her Fiorilla, Corbelli is a very funny Geronio, Vargas is a Narciso with a very beautiful voice and De Candia is a Poet really inspiried. Pertusi is good, but no enough, He's maybe boring.
Chailly conducts very well with a great chorus and a great orchresta. Do you want a second option for a good "Turco"? In cd there isn't. In VHS try Mariella Devia version from Scalla di Milano.
Boring CD!!!!!.......2001-09-04
Some of the arias were quite good.
though overall, it is very dull opera.
and Batoli didn't help this opera either.
Her mezzo voice is not suitable at all with this high demanding coloratura role as heroine. Terrible miscast to cash in her name even though she doesn't have right soprano voice.
For some arias, I found a joy from Sumi Jo's version for same aria by Philips recording.
However, once again, it is dull opera overall to enjoy from CD only. I guess you have to see from Stage.

Surprise, brilliant and fiery Rossini from the young Abbado.......2006-07-12
When Claudio Abbado headed the LSO in the Seventies he was at his most spontaneous and energetic. Listening to this highly charged Rossini overture CD, you'd never suspect that this fiery conductor would turn into the rather careful Rossinian of later years. There are other outstanding Rossini overture records that are warm and classic (Giulini), coolly virtuosic (Reiner and Szell), driven and intense (Toscanini), and excitingly extroverted (Bernstein), but they all sound rame and controlled compared to this CD.
The LSO plays with exceptional vivacity, and the recording from RCA, being bright and forward, adds to the thrills. I'm so glad that all these works aren't played in the jokey, light Rossini style of the Barber of Seville. Semiramide, for example, is a tragedy, and Abbado interprets the overture with more drama and weight than usual. In the Turco in Italia Over. we get a stunning horn obbligato from Barry Tuckwell that's worth the whole price of admisison. The Barber of Seville is full of carefree good humor, William Tell is totally devoid of mannerisms, played as if we haven't all heard it a thousand times--the storm section is a knockout from the LSO brass section, as is the finale mad gallop.
The three Verdi preludes and overtures that fill out this mid-price CD are also very fine, but the real show is Rossini. What a shame that this eye-opening, heart-stopping recording seems to be overlooked here at Amazon.

Portogallo steals the show and Devia amazes as usual!.......2005-08-20
They love Devia in Italy and it's no wonder. She has done much to bring opera back to its roots and she's worth every applause she gets.
This is another one of her perfect recitals. Don't expect long top notes in the end of the scenes since this was performed at the Rossini festival so Devia complies with the composer's wishes who didn't ask for fireworks. He did write a lot of notes but they are supposed to express feelings, not impress the audience and expressive Devia is. Her focused, balsamic-vinegar-like voice in in great shape and promises a stunning evening.
The Turco scene opens the recital and Devia sounds better than in the staged performance of this opera 2 years earlier. Fiorilla's desparation and confusion is also evident and makes the scene very exciting till the end. I really enjoy having a soprano sing Fiorilla. Devia performed Adelaide di Borgonia in the 80s and the next scene brings back memories of those very fine recordings and performances. Portogallo's morte di Semiramide was for me the winning piece of this recital. Very similar to Rossini but sounding a bit more meaningful. La morte di Didone closes this great recital that I'm guessing led to the Decca Rossini cantata recordings. Bravissima!

Lively Turco with great male cast.......2005-07-01
Caballe is one of my favourite sopranos of all time. By the time she did this recording however, her top forte notes were no longer pleasant. Neither does she manage all florid moments as great as she used to but that is a minor problem. After all, she was singing Turandot at the time of this recording! Listeners unfamiliar with prime Caballe will still be impressed by her sweet and involved singing, particularly in the quiet parts but if you've heard this woman in her prime, anything less is a compromise. Her crafty Fiorilla is nevertheless a lovely addition to her many, many roles.
Once past Caballe, everyone else excels vocally and comically. Who can resist the sound of Ramey in his prime? A superb basso cantato in a role ideally suited to his personality and instrument! And what a pleasure that we nowadays have D'Arcangelo to carry this tradition on. Dara, Palacio, Nucci have also been praised numerous times for their contribution in buffo roles and they can all be heard in their prime on this Turco. Berbie also does a wonderful job as Zaida. Chailly, an expert in Rossini works, helps them work well as a team and the recording is quite bubbly for a studio one.
You'll also find interesting individual performances on other studio sets like the severely cut Gavazzeni recording (Rossi-Lemeni, Callas et.al) or the second Chailly set (Corbelli, Bartoli). Devia's stunning live performances as Fiorilla are also worth getting.
Nearly the best Turco (like every recordings).......2002-10-25
This record is the second one (in studio) and the first one done after the Mrs. Bent critical edition. The cuts are opened and some pieces are treated more carefully. If you want to judge the singers and the personality of the character, the Gavazzeni recording hasn't got rivals. Callas has a better accent, Sumi Jo seems to be fragil and Bartoli a little misplaced in the tessitura. Our Fiorilla (Caball) shines in dramatic moments and give us her famous pianos. She sounds as young as Fiorilla must be, but sometimes heavier than the role idea. The rest of the cast is superb, including the minor roles of Zaida (Berbi) and Albazar (Barbacini), who is prized with the Aria del Sorbetto that was not written by Rossini. Since the opera has more ensembles than arias is difficult to appreciate the power of singers as individual character, so the duets are the places where Ramey, Caball and Dara shows their skills. The numbers are sung in the "come scritto" way with some accepted variations: in this point the Gavazzeni's cast does sings with some variations (in the little uncut numbers) and doing the codas with a sharp tune. I think i have to buy the four studio recordings- i have three: Marriner, Gavazzeni and this one. Next year i'll buy the Bartoli rec. and Marrocu one.
The best portrait.......2002-02-28
I consider this recording not the best of all available ones, but the best PORTRAIT of full edition of Turco, with Rossini in main role. Younger Chailly's version on Decca is a modern INTERPRETATION of this oper, more sophisticated, more vividly coducted, but Bartoli is too much special personality in author's carefuly balanced team and her tessitura cancels grotesque effect with changing of two women. More: Vargas is not the real idiomatic Rossinian tenor. Philips vesion is very good, but Sumi Jo sounds too much fragile as primadonna "capricciosa".
Both ladies in present recording are about 50 (Barbie originaly mezzo!) but in fresh voice and secure coloratura. One fault only: first disc ends in the middle of Act 1 finale.
A must have!.......2001-05-28
This recording, from 1982, has the famous and spectacular soprano Montserrat Caballe(as Donna Fiorilla), the main star of this recording. Caballe, as always, doesn't have a, say, perfect Italian accent but her performance is extraordinary, she was in her better days, doing an excellent job and accomplishing a perfect interpretation with her unmistakable voice. It is also worth to highlight the basses Enzo Dara(Don Geronio) and Samuel Ramey(Selim), both possessing an incredible comicality in their arias. The tenor Ernesto Palacio(Don Narciso), besides his brilliant voice, has a very beautiful Italian accent, very gallant. The recitative, accompanied by piano is in general a little monotonous as almost all opera recitatives, but very limpid and very well spoken. The part of the choirs is very well served by Ambrosian Opera Chorus, that is a great show by itself, with agile and vibrant voices in a perfect interaction with the main cast. Riccardo Chailly's excellent conduction of National Philarmonic Orchestra is added all this, that is perfect, seeming that he got to understand the way that Rossini wanted this opera should be presented. The sound quality is very good, very well recorded and very clean: digital recording, despite the year(1982).
Well, this is an excellent recording of this opera, that is good either to check Caballe's voice in one of her top carreer moments or just to know the elegant comicality of Rossini's in an excellent recording with amazing performances. Five stars easy.

Rossini Overtures with a light touch .......2004-11-23
I really like Neville Marriner and the AMF -- they are excellent for Mozart, esp. "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik" or for Handel's Water Music. Marriner and AMF apply a lighter and sprightly touch on these famous Rossini overtures. The AMF certainly sounds graceful. However, I prefer a fuller orchestra sound and more rousing rendition for pieces such as "William Tell Overture" (especially the finale) and "The Thieving Magpie", which are two of my favorite overtures. The sound quality is not as spacious and resonant as other versions of Rossini that I own. I have to turn up the volume a bit in order to listen to the orchestra in full. If you like a bigger orchestra sound and a more exciting rendition of these pieces (esp. William Tell), I would recommend Fritz Reiner, Riccardo Chailly, Leonard Bernstein, and/or Herbert von Karajan.

Well played technically ,but..........2004-03-30
I have two major issues with this cd:
1) why was the William Tell overture omitted? Anyone who has heard it in its 12 minute entirety cannot help but be impressed. It's one of the best, if not the best, overture Rossini wrote. Listen to Gardelli or Chailly conduct this overture in their respective versions of the entire opera.
2) I enjoy Orpheus and admire their technique, but at times they can sound a bit too mechanical. In this issue, I found that they were unable to convey some of Rossini's playfulness, warmth and humor.
So with all due respect, I cannot share the enthusiasm of others regarding this disc.
One of the Greatest Living Orchestras in the World.......2000-11-09
Open your mind and strap on your classical thrill belt!
This orchestra is one of the greatest groups in the modern clasical circuit. One amazing factor in their success is that they have NO CONDUCTOR! Their perfomances are innovative, well articulated, and very energetic. The phrasing is outstanding. This group plays very precisely and uniformly. The balance is incredible! I cannot say enough about this orchestra--see for yourself. You will not be disappointed! Buy this CD- it's the best recording of Rossini I think I'll ever be graced to hear on modern instruments. Orpheus is God's fresh gift to the humdrum of stale ensembles. What a great price, too!
Outstanding CD.......2000-05-11
The Orpheus Chamber Orchestra plays these pieces better than they have ever been played. The performance is astoundingly clean. The recording is exemplary. The price is almost criminally low. Why Deutsche Grammophon took this out of print in the first place is a mystery. The fact that they've reissued it at midprice is a GIFT to the civilized world. The same could be said of their reissue of Emerson doing the Dvorak 12th quartet, Tchaikovsky 1st, and Borodin 2d quartets. The BEST part of this CD is that the performances are using ORIGINAL orchestrations--orchestrations that have inexplicably fallen out of practice in concert performances of the overtures--that let Rossini's humor in the pieces shine through (e.g. piccolo rather than flute in Italiana in Algeri). Even if you have a recording of Rossini overtures, this one uses the original orchestrations, includes some rarer overtures, and has the clarinet bonus track, and I guarantee the performances are better than any ever recorded. In sum, buy this CD now and be glad for the rest of your life that you did.
A must buy!.......1999-12-02
You would like this CD before you have even bought it. The clarinet player is just great. It is a great orchestration and the sound quality is great. I have nothing bad to say about the CD. Don't take my word for it just buy it. Are you trippin'! Buy this CD jigga'!
