This is the 1947, full-orchestra version of Maurice Duruflé's Requiem, one of the 20th century's most beloved choral works. It's the first of three versions the composer made of the piece. Despite the enhanced intimacy of the smaller-scale versions, the original offers a rich orchestral tapestry, especially compelling in the performance by Michel Plasson's forces, without diminishing the work's radiant beauties or its spiritual depths. Those virtues are enhanced by the singing of Anne Sofie von Otter and Thomas Hampson. The chorus, a weak element in the Requiem, shines brighter on the rest of the disc, which gathers all of Duruflé's choral music. The Mass is more assertive than the Requiem and should be heard more often. It gets a powerful performance here, as do the miniature Motets, intense in their restrained beauties. --Dan Davis

5 out of 5 stars Such a Beautiful Requiem.......2006-04-20

If you're a fan of requiems (especially the ones made by Brahms, Faure, and Berlioz) then you'll love this one by Maurice Durufle. It sounds so angelic and passionate. Michel Plasson's superb handling of the Orchestre du Capitole de Toulouse and the Orfeon Donostiarra gives makes this piece of work shine with full fervor and magnificence. The vocal soloists, von Otter and Hampson, never miss a step. This is a beautiful, but sometimes neglected, requiem, and it should be more recognized from outside of France.

4 out of 5 stars Great French Music.......2006-02-27

I love this composition and its rendition by Michael Plasson. However, the inept sound recording used on this CD greatly reduces its value. Wish it were issued on SACD.

5 out of 5 stars All things bright and beautiful..........2005-09-01

I've listened to 4 different recordings of Durufle's Requiem closely: Santa Cecilia National Academy Orchestra Rome with Cecilia Bartoli and Conducted by Myung-Whun Chung, Voices of Ascension Chorus & Orchestra with Patricia Spence and Conducted by Dennis Keene, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra & Chorus with Judith Blegen and Conducted by Robert Shaw, and this one. And I have to say that this is my favorite. The textures are richer and the performances by the orchestra and choir are better than the others. I will admit though that Cecilia Bartoli gets my vote for most beautiful performance of the Pie Jesu, but Anne Sofie von Otter's rendition is also very nice.
However, if you're looking for just one recording of Durufle's Requiem, this should be the one.

5 out of 5 stars PERFECTION!!.......2001-08-13

This is one of the most beautiful CDs on the face of the planet. Durufle, a composer of the French Organ School, was a composer who possessed much reserve and this shows through in the restrained beauty of his music. Of particular interest is Track 16, UBI CARITAS--Durufle as well as the chorus are at their best here. The chorus sings the beautiful motet gently and with much feeling. The sublime beauty of this work of art instantly brings Durufle as an equal to that of Mozart, Bach, Handel, Vivaldi, and Beethoven. This music is not for those who like humungous bangs but rather those who can appreiate the quiet dignity of this man's work.

This is the most uplifting music I have encountered. The angelic sounds of this choral group help me stay sane on California highways!

5 out of 5 stars The Holy Grail of Choral Recordings.......2006-07-03

This was the first choral CD I've ever purchased when I started becomming involved with choir during my senior year of high school five years ago. My director was telling the choir that he had finally found his copy at a music store and referred to it as the "Holy Grail" of choral recordings. So, I went out to find my own copy and I'm still blown away by it today. I've even given copies as gifts. The music is certainly relaxing and such, but what I most value from it is the spiritual magic. The Choir of Trinity College, Cambridge (then and now my favorite choir in the world) brings every composition to life in such a way that's pure, elegant, and deep. Listening to this music and enjoying this choir has allowed me to set my own standard of singing and compositional excellence.

5 out of 5 stars One Small Correction.......2004-03-06

I keep finding new things to love on this CD, including the fact that it has the first recording I found of Gabriel Faure's beautiful Soprano (or Soprano/Alto) duet Ave Maria., Opus 93. The same recording appears on another CD where the singers are named. The above description of this selection unaccountably adds a baritone. Incidentally, Faure also composed a shorter SATB Ave Maria, which John Rutter has recorded.

I only wish the recording included the complete text of Psalm 50/51 from Gregorio Allegri's Miserere Mei Deus. This might come from John Rutter's recently edited score, published by Oxford Press, if I'm not mistaken. I, for one, do not find this selection (or indeed the entire recording) too long and I believe that the embellishments at the end (mentioned in another review) are probably correct when considering performance conventions of the time of its composition.

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous music, gorgeous performances.......2003-06-19

I am a semi-professional singer with a BA in Music, and I bought this CD with some trepidation because it looked like one of those dreadful "pop classical" compilations that are everywhere lately. But it had lots of great repertoire all in on place, so I decided to risk it, and I was not disappointed! In fact, this is now one of my favorite choral CDs.

As usual, the Choir of Trinity College delivers stunning performances, and the music itself is just gorgeous. Lots of "church" favorites from a wide range of musical periods. The mood of the CD is definitely on the mellow side, but it's perfect for those quiet moods. I love this CD -- highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Stunning collection suitable for music nuts or newbies alike.......2002-03-18

Even as an avid fan of classical music with very picky tastes, there was just so much good music packed on these two (cheap!) discs for me to take in at once!
The perfectly balanced and locked chords can really give you chills.

I gave this CD as a present to a good friend of mine who was not so familiar with the genre, with tremendous results. I think this would make a great gift to anyone with the slightest inclination towards classical music.

5 out of 5 stars A Magnificent Requiem.......2007-03-18

Durufle is a composer who is new to me. I have really been missing something! Because my church choir was preparing a performance of this lovely and complex piece of music, I decided to familiarize myself with it, and I was well rewarded. Written in the 1940s, immediately after the end of World War II, this work harbors no bitterness towards the recent occupation, but speaks to the joy of salvation.

5 out of 5 stars A Compassionate and Definitive Performance of the Durufle Requiem.......2006-04-14

Maurice Durufle's hauntingly beautiful Requiem remains a rara avis in the musical repertoire from the last century. A brilliant organist and fine composer, Durufle (1902 - 1986) left us with relatively few works for organ and voices - the Missa "Cum Jubilo", for baritone, baritone chorus, orchestra & organ, Op. 11 and the Notre P?re for male voices & organ, Op. 14 are included on this fine recording - but his Requiem remains one of the jewels of the 20th century composition. Unlike most other requiems the Durufle version is related to Gregorian chant and uses the organ as an important aspect of the fabric of the work. This is a work of compassion and solace and is one of the more mystical settings of the requiem mass ever composed.

The chief reason, then, for recommending this CD so highly is the performance of the Requiem with Dennis Keene conducting the Voices of Ascension Orchestra and Chorus ably assisted by Richard Locker, Patricia Spence, Mark Kruczek, and Kathleen Bride. Keene knows his way in and out and through this work, having studied with the Durufles and having performed the work countless times. His vision is clear and he guides the very beautiful Voices of Ascension Ensemble through a reading that is at once compassionate and mystically detached! That is a rare feat, but Keene's clear conducting and balances achieved with the organ, chorus and soloists is astonishingly fine.

While most classical music collectors doubtless have at least one recording of the Durufle Requiem in collection, this CD surpasses them all (yes, even the Robert Shaw version) and deserves a high position in the ranks of recorded choral works. Hearing it again during Holy Week adds an entirely new dimension to the appreciation of this truly excellent recording. Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, April 06

5 out of 5 stars Another win for Voices of Ascension.......2003-10-16

I have long held Voices of Ascension compilations in my collection (and my heart). My personal favorite is "From Chant to Renaissance", but this is a close second. While Durufle is likely considered a "modern" composer, he draws many of his themes in these pieces from traditional chants, then wraps them with modern phrasing that draws the traditional into today's world. It is a very satisfying and appealing melding of the past with curent voicing for those who are open to the intricacies of the strains.

I am not a formally trained choral musician, but love the art form and have worked with groups that have performed works from the traditional masters up through today's emerging composers. Consistently, the performances of the Voices of Ascension satisfy both the heart and the spirit.

5 out of 5 stars Well worth hearing.......2003-05-30

A very good performance with a very good recording. The Requiem had more pace and, - dare I say it, - life about it than many other performances I've heard.

5 out of 5 stars Etherial Bliss!.......2001-10-14

This recording of Durufle's masterpiece is hands down the best currently available. Written in the 20th century, Durufle can be considered the heir to Faure in a succession of French composers, however adds unique harmonies to medival plainchant melodies. The sound quality is supurb and the Voices of Ascention choir led by Dennis Keene sing with such a pure laser like focused sound reminescent of a boys choir.

Maestro Keene's phrasing and shaping of the chant melodies is remarkable.....the Kyrie fugue (2nd mvt) is no easy task to conduct, and Keene extracts brilliance from the thick fabric of polyphony.

Durufle revised three versions of his Requiem and all three versions are widely performed. The version on this disc consists of organ and a small chamber orchestra with limited brass. It is a more intimate setting which I believe showcases the organ (Durufle's instrument) and brings the organ to it's intended role without the extraneous woodwind section heard in the full orchestral version.

The In Paridisum (or final movement) is perhaps the best I've heard performed.....the organ chant melody heard in the final 5 bars is played as if the organist was singing the melody instead of playing it....this critical moment has been ignored and overlooked on other recordings (such as Michele Plasson's EMI 2000 release) in which the organ used is out of tune.

Also on this disc is the Missa Cum Jubilo for mens chorus, organ and small orchestra, which is performed beautifully.

Durulfe's literature consists of precious few compositions...only a handful of organ compositions, a requiem, the missa cum jubilo and 4 motets...his final composition Notre Pere (on this CD) is performed well too. It's a pity Durufle did not compose more.....his performance schedule while he was alive kept him from composing.

One final note, conductor Dennis Keene was a good friend of maestro Durufle and protege of Durufle's wife who herself was also a famous organ virtuoso who no doubt influenced Keene on many artistic decisions, so this recording can be considered to be a first hand interpretation from the composer himself.

5 out of 5 stars Salamunovich puts the frosting on the cake!.......2001-09-20

It doesn't get much better than this!
Paul Salamunovich and the Los Angeles Master Chorale
provide a fitting conclusion to a collaboration which represnts some of the finest choral singing of our day.
Paul's thorough understanding of Chant is exemplified in the "Cum Jubilo" performance.
Bravo Maestro!

4 out of 5 stars Good recording - not great........2007-07-12

The recording of the Requiem on this CD leaves much to be desired. The choir is quite good but the organ accompaniment is overpowering. The poorly balanced bass drones ruin the Requiem's last movement - one of the most serene musical moments of 20th century. I think the orchestral accompaniment is much nicer. As for the other pieces, I would say they are well done. Ubi Caritas is nice but I wish that more of the other vocal parts would come out more with the alto melody. The tenor harmony part is beautiful-if you can hear it. Overall, the CD is a good introductory recording for Maurice Durufle's choral works.

    3 out of 5 stars Technically accurate, but . . ........2004-03-20

There's no passion, no ethereal mystery, no angel-kissed phrasing here. Duruflé was French, after all, born in the height of the Impressionist period. This Requiem must be performed with authoritative delicacy--with images of lofty, wispy cirrus clouds--as well as with full-bodied sonority as rich as dark chocolate truffles. More than music, any effective Requiem must also be a worship experience, and one should be able to feel like the musicians are connected with faith, so that both they and the listener have one hand reaching into heaven. Adult singers are more likely to have the maturity and life exposure necessary to understand and convey the blended message of grief and hope far better than the children on this CD.

While the Westminster choir is faithful to the notes, it lacks the sparkle and conviction of the text that is essential to a first-class rendition. The uneven pronunciation is glaring to the experienced ear: one lad grossly splatters "sanctus" with an American-spread "a"; voiced consonants (l, m, n, for example) steal prematurely from the vowels, adding to the minced, munched quality of the musical line; gratingly diphthonged vowels abound, even in the solo Pie Jesu ("Pi-e-i Je-i-su"); frequently overblown diction destroys the musical line--the bright, chewed "pleni sunt coeli" in the Sanctus sounds like boys slogging through deep puddles in galoshes, while the beginning of nearly every "sanctus" is attacked so vigorously, it gives the impression that someone just kicked the boys in the backside. These entrances should be lifted out of the soul rather than punched in the gut. Add to that many lifeless, flat-lined phrases, individual voices jutting out of the choral texture, and muddy organ voicing (this may depend on audio equipment quality), and the most compassionate choice is to let this recording pass into history as quickly and with as little fanfare as possible.

Duruflé's Requiem deserves to be in every choral enthusiast's audio library. Much more heart-filled, artistic performances are available with the Robert Shaw Chorale, the Voices of Ascension, the Paris Audite Nova Choir, or one of the other versions buried deeper in the Amazon search listing. If you prefer straight-toned boys' voices to female timbres, Christopher Robinson and the Choir of St. John's College, Cambridge, offer a more balanced and musically satisfying presentation.

    5 out of 5 stars Requiem.......2003-04-14

I had to sing the Requiem in a concert, and I have to say that this reecording helped me alot and I also listen to the music (and sing along sometimes)

4 out of 5 stars An unusual account, well worth hearing.......2000-11-20

Duruflé left three versions of his Requiem and Messe cum Jubilo--for organ with full orchestra, for organ with chamber orchestra, and for organ "alone" (all three versions feature a cello solo in the "Pie Jesu"). It is the organ-only version recorded here.

While the organ-only versions of these works are not my personal favorite, this recording makes a very strong case: while some of the orchestral details must be lost--more so in the Requiem than the Mass--the basic thrust remains, and the constant presence of the organ gives the work a more "ethereal" quality than the other two versions.

Incredibly, the central "Pie Jesu" solo loses little in giving the role to a treble, rather than Duruflé's preferred contralto, and Natalie Clein's cello solo is excellently played and recorded.

However, it is Simon Keenlyside's singing that crowns the work--his singing in the solos of both works are absolutely the best I've heard, and he pulls off the high ossia in the Messe Cum Jubilo effortlessly.

The "Four Motets on Gregorian Themes" and "Notre Père" are an added bonus. In all, this is a highly welcome disc.

4 out of 5 stars An outstanding performance from almost every standpoint........1999-07-06

Durufle's Requiem is, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful and moving 20th Century works ever composed. The work is awesome in every standpoint as is much of this recording. The Westminster boy's choir has a gorgeous sound, I admit, but I do have several complaints. Durufle composed to versions of this work, one with orchestra, and one with organ. The latter is recorded here. While I have nothing against organ, I feel that it fails to have the dynamic intensity of a full orchestra. With that in mind, this is still an awesome achievement.

Wow- is the first word that comes to mind in regards to this boxed set. This set is what made me fall in love with the Taverner Consort under the direction of Andrew Parrott. His interpretations of such hits as Gabrielli's "In eclesiis" and Vivaldi's "Four Seasons" have breathed new life into this genre. I've not heard the solo of "The Four Seasons" played with as much zeal, as much independent, stylized freedom. Oh! I almost forgot- Andrew's rendition of Vivaldi's "Gloria" is not to be missed. While not as robust as a choral setting, this version lands ever so sweetly on the ear. This is a must-have boxed set and a great introduction to Andrew Parrot and the Taverner Consort.
