This tape is short and the melodies are not engaging for kids. It was waste of money.

5 out of 5 stars Baby Einstein: Traveling Melodies .......2006-02-23

Hello everyone,
This CD is great!
My son has ADD & when we are out & he gets Anxious I put this CD in his portibale CD player.
It seems to help him calm down & better cope with things.
I think that every parent should have this CD that has a special needs child.
Thanks so much for putting it online for people to buy.
Thanks Again,
A Greatfull Mom

5 out of 5 stars Saved My Sanity.......2005-11-03

My husband and I are musicians so I inwardly groaned when we were given this CD as a gift--I'd rather play the originals rather than some synthesized kiddie version. However, on a recent road trip we got desperate when our colicky son would not stop screaming. We popped this in the CD player and it calmed him down immediately. I swear, it's like aural crack for babies. We now play it at bedtime to help calm him down and it still works. You may not love this CD, but your baby will.

4 out of 5 stars A Very Pleasant CD for Little Ones in the Car.......2005-11-01

I picked this up for driving around music and was very pleasantly surprised. Quite enjoyable (and my son seems to like it too!) and perfect for exactly what it says--traveling around. Easy listening and could possibly make your child smarter, great!

Opening with Clara Rockmore's reworking of Tchaikovsky with the theremin, and finishing with one of Brian Eno's ambient soundscapes, OHM artfully succeeds in its goal of giving a representative (as opposed to the impossible, comprehensive) overview of the first several decades of electronic music. Over 3 discs, 42 compositions, and 96 pages of notes and photos, OHM clearly illustrates the producers' and contributing writers' point that early electronic music is much of the foundation of contemporary music. Herein lies the connective tissue bridging musique concrète, 20th-century classical, electronic experimentation, and the theoretical avant-garde to psychedelia, ambient, dub, techno, electro, and synthpop and the globalization of sound. The groundbreaking uses of loops, sampling, drones, remixes, and cut-and-paste technology are put fully into context. The diversity of music included makes any sort of summation impossible, but that is also the point: electronic music is not really a genre, but an open field of endless possibility. From John Cage's famous "William's Mix" of tape snippets to Karkheinz Stockhausen's electronic orchestral compositions, from David Tudor and Holger Czukay's experiments in unrelated blendings of audio elements to David Behrman's supremely peaceful duet between computers and musicians, the aural renegades on OHM tread where none (save a few of their contemporaries) had gone before. The liner notes convey the incredible amount of hard work and experimentation it took to stitch together many of these pieces in the predigital era. Putting aside the inevitable quibbles about what's missing (much of it due to legal and/or logistical issues), a more complete collection of musical eggheads, eccentrics, and visionaries is hard to imagine. --Carl Hanni

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars excellent but uncomplete.......2006-11-12

Althought most of the music here is an excellent collection of electronic music history, this 3 CDs lack of the important contribution given by the RAI phonology studios of Milan, Italy in the 50s
(which was bigger than Koln's WDR studios) with Bruno Maderna, Luciano Berio and Luigi Nono.
This is a big mistake. Milans studios were the biggest of europe and produced many important electroacoustic pieces.
If the collection aim to describe faithfully electronic music history, it should include this artists too.

4 out of 5 stars To call it music may be a bit limiting. .......2006-10-24

Some of the tracks on here are "music". That is that they contain all the bits we're trained to experience as music -- melody, etc. Some are not, and the composers would be the first people to tell you that. A lot of these works are reactions to ingrained rules, so they're bound to be jarring.

A more successful way to approach such a broad and varied collection of audio experimentation is to think of it as curated sound. This isn't something to wash the dishes to, or to seduce someone to (although if you did manage to seduce someone with the recordings on this anthology, HOLD ON TO THAT PERSON, because they've got to be a keeper). These are unique sound textures that deserve a close, probably solitary listen, and I think if you're in the right frame of mind, it can be a very rewarding listen.

My main complaint is sequencing: each dicrete piece follows it's own internal logic, so there are more than a couple rough gear changes. However, since each piece is so different, and the collection is so varied, I'm not sure that you could totally escape that.

4 out of 5 stars A worthwhile collection.......2006-01-11

The OHM collection contains some of those ground breaking electronic compositions that have shaped today's styles, from the early electronic instruments of Theremin and Martenot, through Pierre Schaeffer's Music Concrete tape music and the electronic music of Stockhausen and Subotnick, to the mainframe computer output of Risset and Chowning.

It is unfair to mark this collection down due to the production quality and 'musicality' of its contents, to do so would be to staggeringly miss the point of the development of electronic music through the 20th Century. What this collection shows is the ideas behind those at the cutting edge of the genre before many could even conceive of such output. That said it is hard going at points, as experimental music can be.

Highlights for me are no doubt Olivier Messiaen's 'Oraison' on CD 1, David Tudor's 'Rainforest Version 1' on CD 2 and on CD 3 David Behrman's 'On the Other Ocean' and Maryanne Amacher's 'Living sound Patent Pending'.

1 out of 5 stars OhMyGodHowDreadful.......2005-08-15

Ok, this collection is supposed to be early works and, thus not expected to be very sophisticated or polished. But the OHM collection sounds like the first attempt of a spastic cat turned-loose on a Moog keyboard. When it is not boreing, this collection of random and dissonant sounds (I can't call it music) is without any redeeming qualities to make it worth while. Don't get me wrong, I am a long-time fan of Wendy (nie Walter) Carlos and some other real pioneers of electronic music. However, I find that the Ohm collection has no similar qualities and is a major disappointment.

5 out of 5 stars Kid Stockhausen.......2003-01-17

This is required listening for anybody interested in the history of electronic music. Although implicitly aiming for the techno music audience, this audio history is overwhelmingly focused on the classical avant-garde of electro-acoustic composers. The closest you'll get to pop electronica is the Brian Eno track at the end of the third disc. No Kraftwerk, no Moroder, etc. Instead "OHM" manages to point to the continuities between, say, John Cage and artists currently working at the experimental edges of electronica (so-called IDM). It seems to be saying, "You think Kid 606 is visionary? Well check out this Stockhausen track from '59!"

Admittedly, some of the songs are much more interesting to think about than they are to listen to. Some of the early pieces that were made through thosuands of hours of pains-taking tape-splicing could be made today in an afternoon with a digital audio editor and a few effects plug-ins.

It is a beautiful package, containing a 90 page booklet of essays, quotations from the featured artists, and photographs. What all music should be: an education in daring.

4 out of 5 stars Very versatile Toddler music.......2004-04-29

Smarter Toddler Daycare NYC plays this CD during naptime and lunchtime and interestingly enough this CD works extremely well for both of those very different activities so it is very versatile. Since Smarter Toddler has a pretty varied music program they have most of the CDs in the "baby series" but I like this one the most.

Recorded live at Tetzlaff's Heimbach Chamber Music Festival in 2002, the violinist and his piano partner bring out all the lyric poetry of Brahms's three violin sonatas as well as blinding virtuosity when it's called for. So the sweet singing that opens the First Sonata is done with great feeling, and they make the scintillating Presto finale of the Third Sonata an exciting romp. The duo's timings in the sonatas are among the fastest on disc, but the rightness of their playing and phrasing add up to flowing beauty, not excessive speed. They enter into Brahms's gently nostalgic moods when called for, but the overall impression they leave is of a rhapsodic Romanticism, full of passionate ardor. Vogt's full-bodied pianism, Tetzlaff's pure upper register and velvety bottom, and the pair's apt phrasing make this a highly satisfying release. The disc's encore is Brahms's early scherzo movement, which goes like the wind. The engineering is exemplary. An eminently recommendable disc! --Dan Davis

          Album Description

Interesting title, and one that is highly appropriate. Robert Ian Winstin's compositional output seems to defy categorization. At times he is blatantly neo-classical, as in his "Symphony #5" (`Symphony of Song'), and in other works, even from the same compositional era, he seems to flaunt convention, as in his very interesting `music history' work "Opening Night Overture", and writes completely Out of the Box. In fact, nothing about Winstin's work, or life, for that matter, could claim to be `within boundaries'. A distinguished composer and conductor, well respected by professional peers throughout the world — and, yet, he spends a tremendous amount of conductor. (He claims it "energizes him and keeps him fresh". It also "needs to be done—why in the world would you want your child to have a bad conductor?") He travels weekly between the Mid-West and the East Coast, partly to work with the two youth orchestras he founded, and partly to spend time with his wife and step-children. In between, he sandwiches outside concert appearances, recordings (of which he does a lot), community activism (he is the former Chairman of the Arts Commission in Illinois) and composing. He once quipped, in an interview on Public Radio, that he did his best work in public libraries and on airplanes. He shuns the usual commissions in favor of more `interesting', and often less financially rewarding, compositional opportunities. And, he seems to revel in all of this with his performance style that often has him joking with the audience from the podium and encouraging applause between movements ("It's okay to clap when you think we're doing a great job—we do ask that you spare us the spoiled tomatoes when you think the opposite!") —an almost sacrilegious behaviour in the very conservative field of classical music. Of course, none of this should come as a surprise to an audience member as they watch the six-foot-three, stocky ("I'm slightly plump") Winstin take the stage with his shock of long hair (a `long-hair' in long haired music) and an over-sized, almost all grey, goatee. It should be obvious from the beginning that he is going to be coloring outside the lines.

          5 out of 5 stars Must Have.......2004-07-15

This collection has one of the standard best orchestras in the world but also brings in fresh talent in the young violin soloist on Winstin's "Spirituals". Of course this collection brings out the best of the eclectic content that is the norm for Winstin's productions, as well. It is absolutely a must have. Every type of music lover will enjoy some aspect of this fabulous collection!

          5 out of 5 stars Boffo!.......2004-07-06

          This CD is Boffo!

What a great find - a CD AND DVD in the same package. I have heard Winstin's music before on NPR and at a concert in San Francisco a few years ago and found myself intrigued by this composer and performer.

I am glad to see Winstin's music recorded by top-rate orchestras. I loved the Scherzo Burlesque and the Trumpet Concerto. The highlight, though, was the recording of Winstin's very moving "Spirituals for Violin and Orchestra" with the young violinist Danielle Economy.

This is a "Masterwork" (Winstin conducts the "Masterworks of the New Era" recordings) in the biggest sense. I can't imagine anyone not wanting to play the thing - it is so "American" sounding, yet not beholden to the past.

Economy's playing is at times brilliant - it is obvious why she was picked for this recording.

The DVD titles are fun and help understand what Winstin is all about.

I give this title FIVE STARS.

          Amazon.com essential recording

Hard to believe that as early as 1958 there was a 25-year retrospective concert of John Cage's music. But this 3-CD set documents both the concert and its meaning for the history of New Music. Organized by no less than Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg and Emile de Antonio, the event sparked heated controversy--some of it documented in the crowd's reaction to Cage's early tape- music piece, Williams Mix. The expansive booklet accompanying the CDs includes loads of prescient commentary, much of it from Cage himself. Most telling is the simple formulation: "New Music. New Listening. Just an attention to the activity of sounds." Cage's earliest-prepared piano sonatas are abbreviated with clangorous, percussive results, and the Concerto for Piano and Orchestra sprawls noisily in myriad directions. The sound is broad and warm for a 40-year-old live recording, and this is a cornerstone document of post-World War II art. --Andrew Bartlett

5 out of 5 stars The ideal starting point if you are new to Cage.......2002-12-11

This is perhaps one of the most important documents of American Music ever recorded, the Composer John Cage will undoubtedly be veiwed in future eras as not only the most important American composer of all time, but one of the most important Composers of all time. Until this time, also the work of Edgard Varese, Pierre Schaeffer and Karlheinz Stockhausen, all music in "the west" written after Bach could have been found in Bach, it was even said if all music was lost as long as Bach remained it could all be discovered again. Here's where everything changes. To really appreciate Cage's music it is best to hear him or David Tudor perform or "conduct" it, they are both onboard here for this excellent three C.D. set. Most of Cage's major works are represented here, his percussion pieces, his prepared piano, even his tape music. Start here, then get Indeterminancy, Roaratorio, more preapared piano pieces, and Cartridge music. But DO start here, there are too many poor interpretations of Cage's music available, you can't go wrong with this. And if you already know Cage's music but don't own this, then you should be ashamed of yourself.

5 out of 5 stars A primary document of the American avant-garde.......1999-04-10

It was painters Jasper Johns and Bob Rauschenberg who helped arrange this, what today is a monumental document of the American avant-garde. And this was in the late Fifties a time when these American artists had very little money. Here we have all the Cage classics. The "Sonatas and Interludes" for pre-pared piano speaks for itself. Cowell suggested this idea to Cage. So Cage while working on dance accompaniments where no percussion instruments could be played, saw the availability of a piano. He began placing various screws and erasers between the strings. The sound is gamelan-like with thuds, knocks, clings and pings. But also very beautiful even enchanting. Also "Williams Mix" is here a very early electronic piece made from the ancient art of splicing tape together in an indeterminate fashion. I believe Earle Brown had helped. "The Wonderful Widow of Eighteen Springs" is also fascinating where the pianist closes the piano lid to strike 5 various parts of the front piano seated. The effect is not quite bongo-like more dull and thudy with a disarming folksy plain vocal lines singing Joyce. Pure simplicity was an early Cage fascination which has not lost its power to evoke. The mammoth "Concert for Piano" is also here a seminal work conceived of various graphic(almost encyclopedic) procedural ways of playing. Cage had identified some 40 odd ways of attacking, rolling verticalities and horizontialities on the piano keyboard. The work is also a pure graphic feast for the eyes, a delight. The orchestral accompaniment(we really cannot call it that) is made of independent solos, trombone, violin with no direct synchronization. And can be played with or without the piano or these various instruments. But the effect can be anarchistic(non-political) mesmerizing, humorous, dead serious all simultaneously,or not, depending on the performer's energy levels. Cage had opened a chasm of libertarian performing and conceptual creative fluidity that hasn't been closed yet. His open creativity continues to inspire and redirect itself through succeeding generations. This is a monumental document from the earliest days of the high avant-garde reflecting the full scope of these new aesthetic freedoms,or a turn away from an aesthetic object. Perhaps we will know someplace in between.

3 out of 5 stars Good recording and playing, lacks romance.......2005-12-04

I Bought this version mostly because it is SACD and Hybrid. At the time I did not find Y. Pearlmans version on Sony.
From the start I did not find this version inviting to listen to, but over time I got used to it.
Then I gave this to a friend as a gift and he unequivickly felt the same way but refuses to get used to it. I told him about the Pearlman version and he said it's probably good.
Then I got on Amazon and bought a used Pearlman four seasons and I saw the difference.
Pearlman's is dreamy, heavenly, romantic, carefree etc.. and therefore inviting.
This one though perfect in instrument playing and recording to me seems rigid, forced and therefore lifeless. As if the musicians had to do this for homework to school, as if they do not understand the piece, as if they don't enjoy it or the piece does nothing for them.
One thing is for sure, it does nothing for me.
          Sorry
