These early recordings (1950-52) were made while Sviatoslav Richter was still playing this kind of virtuoso Russian music, an area he largely abandoned later in his life. If you enjoy the trivial Rimsky and Glazunov concertos, you'll get a real kick out of the colorful virtuosity of these performances, pretty well conveyed by the recordings although they don't really do justice to Richter's tone. But Richter did make another recording of the Prokofiev, with Karel Ancerl, which is currently available on Supraphon and has a much better orchestra. In either case, the pianist gives this insouciant music all the juice it needs. --Leslie Gerber

CD set is misnamed.......2007-06-08

They should have titled this "classical music for people who love classical music" because most of the selections are typical classical music. The title suggests it would be lively selections of "light classical" music that is more upbeat, i.e. Sabre Dance, etc. I really don't hate classical music at all and have many classical CDs in my collection but I really wanted to hear more exciting selections. I won't be purchasing any more of this set but if you like traditional classical music these are good one.

Do not Buy.......2007-02-21

I do know it says classical music for people who hate it, but serioulsly you would have better luck never listening to classical music again. The recordings are awfull and do not do justice to any of the composers. Buy something else.

We love this set of CD's. I just got a new copy because my kids keeping taking our first copy with them so that they can listen at work or in their bedrooms but then I can never find them.

Seek better versions.......2006-12-09

If you are fairly new to classical purchases then compilation CD's can be useful for deciding what to buy next. Sometimes you only need a small taste of a piece to inspire you to buy a release with the whole performance on. The problem with this compilation however is that most of the versions are poor in performance or recording quality (or both) when compared to the best versions and the fact that the conductors aren't even credited on the track listing made me suspect that this would be the case. One of my favorite classical pieces is Tchaikovsky's 1812 festival overture but if the first CD version I had heard had been the finale excerpt that is on this compilation I may not have gone on to buy the whole thing. Luckily I heard Adrian Leaper's version first and Adrian's version is rather good.
My classical CD buying experience is limited to only a couple of dozen discs but I have found that the Naxos and Deutshe Grammophon releases are fairly safe. Avoid any release which does not name the conductors on the track listing or sleeve notes.

It Is What It Is.......2006-10-27

It's fitting that this page is fraught with the same kind of silly snobbery that turns people off from classical music (and necessitates collections like this) in the first place.

Any criticism of this compilation, which focuses on the quality of the performances or the fact that many tracks are excerpts, misses the point. This is not a collection for people who consider such things, nor does it purport to be. The idea is to package as many ultra-famous classical melodies as possible in one affordable collection and market it to people who have never purchased a classical recording. As such, top-tier performances are likely too expensive to be sold so cheaply and are unnecessary anyway. Those of us who already know and love a piece or two can forgive the compilers the inclusion of sub-par recordings, when we are exposed to so many other beautiful pieces for the first time.

It probably comes as a shock for some to hear that most people are not familiar with these classics. We may hear snippets on TV or movies, but are left with no idea as to the composer or historical context. With that in mind, it is extremely intimidating to begin buying classical. I suppose those among us, who so thoroughly dismissed the very notion of a boxed set like this, would have us begin by buying full albums by reputable interpreters. Surprisingly enough though, the majority of people would consider that a tad cost-prohibitive.

To conclude, this is a STARTER collection. It will either affirm a listener's feelings about classical music or lead to an interest in purchasing better recordings. Ideally, I suppose the interpretations would be better, but, for reasons mentioned above, that just isn't in the cards for a collection of this nature. If you're familiar with 50 different recordings of "The Ring" series, or have season tickets to the New York Philharmonic, then this probably isn't for you. For us cretins with limited foreknowledge of classical music though, it serves as a succinct introduction with little to complain about.

Best collection of violin playing ever made.......2007-04-12

I am a professional violinist and have long been an admirer of Michael Rabin. His technic is beyond concern. I am familiar with people involved in these recordings. Amazingly, many were single, unedited takes. If you ever buy a violin recording, these are the ones to get.

...this collection is an absolute necessity to anyone enjoys violin music and a near necessity to anyone who enjoys classical music...what astounds me is the quality of many of the recordings...more often than not violin recordings seem to produce a sound that leaves the impression that you're listening from the back row in a large hall...most of Rabin's recordings, on the other hand, give the impression either he's right in the room with you or else you're in the front row at the concert.

Rabin is spectacular!!! Just listen to his rendition of Zigeunerwiesen, he has no equal for this piece - not even close! I have been waiting for the re-release of this set for over 5 years, asking EMI if they would ever consider it. My thanks to EMI for listening. This is a re-release they wont regret. I have a collection of classical violin by many artists, but there is something very special about these recordings by Michael Rabin. His interpretations and the gusto of his playing take your breath away.

I cannot imagine any collection of classical music without this set of CDs.

I have to second Scott68. Rabin was one incredible violinist. I agree, the Paganini Caprices (age 15!) Wieniawski and others were never topped by anyone! This set is guaranteed to drop your jaw.

A Fitting Tribute To The 20th Century's Greatest Violinist.......2006-04-01

If you don't have these CD's get them, you won't be disappointed, especially if you love the violin as I do. If you're a Rabin fan too then this small investment is money well spent. A better set of recordings of violin classics couldn't be found anywhere. Rabin quite simply was the greatest violinist of the 20th century, rivalling, and in some ways surpassing the venerable Heifetz. He was also known for his phenomenal virtuosity and 'voluptuos' tone somewhat reminiscent of Perlman.

This boxed set includes many of the virtuoso pieces that made him famous as well as more reflective pieces like Bach. Listen to these and judge for yourselves what a truly great violinist was Rabin.

This is an excellent compilation that shows Milstein at his polished, elegant best. The performance here of the Brahms concerto stands out in particular, as does the disc of Baroque selections. My only complaint is I wish they had included some Bach instead of the disc of bonbons.

Milstein Had it All.......2005-03-28

Nathan Milstein, besides being a great violinist, was a great musician. He had the technique, the intonation, the phrasing, the tone and the high musical ideal which he was able to transfer from the mind to the hand. I've heard most of these tracks in the past. I recently heard the Beethoven concerto, included here, and I must say that it is one of the most beautiful performances of this work, the only others rivaling it
being Kreisler's 1936 recording with all the hisses and pops and
Francescatti's (which I think is taken a trifle too fast, even though in execution, perfect). This set is a treasure that must
be had even though I think the price is rather dear. You will love Nathan Milstein.

To me, Milstein was the greatest violinist of the twentieth century. He was a great technical player and was an eqauly good muscian. I love his playing! He plays most of the great violin concertos and plays them beuatifully. His recordings of the Brahms, the Tchaikovsky, the Beethoven, Saint-Saens 3, an Introduction and Tarantelle are my favorites. This CD is pricey, but at least put it on your Christmas list. I don't actually own I've just listened to it and it's great so buy it if you can afford it.

Scintillating Tone, Enthralling Musicallity.......2000-07-03

This volume set clearly highlights the musical giant that is Milstein. Piquantly and thoughfully phrased with such a clear sense of motion... a must have for any musician!

The Violinist's Violinist.......2000-04-20

Milstein was a contemporary of Jascha Heifetz, and, like Heifetz, was Russian-born, taught by Leopold Auer and emigrated to the USA. Though he had a phenomenal technique and a pure, lyrical, elegant musical style, he spent his career in the shadow of Heifetz's technical perfection. These recordings show him at his best. The remasterings are sonically excellent, and the quality of the sound holds its own against current standards (this is modern, not vintage, sound, despite the fact that some of the recordings are mono).

Milstein's Dvorak and Glazunov concerto recordings , both part of this set, continue to be peerless. The Beethoven concerto has a gorgeous elegance, and the Brahms and the Tchaikovsky concertos are robust; this is perhaps the best of the multiple recordings of the Tchaikovsky that Milstein made during his career. The encores are also superb.

If you love the violin, this is a set you must have. If you like this, you will also want Milstein's recording of the Goldmark concerto (still the definitive recording of this score), and perhaps his Mendelssohn, Bruch, and Prokofiev No. 1 concertos (also on EMI).

Highly Disappointing..........2007-04-08

I picked this CD up in the bookstore after listening to it. I'm a big fan of the powerful classics, such as Carmina Burana O Fortuna, and, of course, Verdi's Dies Irae. I already owned those two pieces as well as a few others when I purchased this album. I had figured if they were on it, it was going to be one impressive CD.

I knew something was wrong the moment I started listening to it. Like others have mentioned, the musicmanship is poor. It sounds rushed most of the time. Plus, I compared Massive Classic's versions of Verdi's Dies Irae to the version I already had, and no way do they stand up. One sounded professional, practiced, and powerful. The other, on this CD: wimpy, weak, and lacking.

This CD couldn't take the time to get the best performances of these classics. Don't waste your time listening to it. Find a different album--there are better ones. My suggestions is The Greatest Choral Show on Earth, which features performances from the world's best orchestras and choirs.

I'm not an expert on classical music..........2006-03-08

But MAN do I love this CD! It's fantastic. Most of the songs you've heard from various movies or television shows, and now they're finally all together. I love listening to it while I drive - I find that I don't scream at traffic as much.

Terrible recordings of great songs........2003-12-20

The song selecting is awesome, but the performances and recordings (or the remastering) are awful. The balance seems off (very tinny sound), and the musicianship is weak (Vivaldi's "Summer" sounds like eigth-notes!).

NOTE: this review is for my CD from the BMG music club. I don't know if the CDs are different from what Amazon sells.

Massive Classics: Music You Can't Relax To.......2003-11-19

Exciting and Inspiring! So good my uncle is keeping my CD after he 'borrowed' it, and I have to buy another copy. And I hope it comes soon! Fun to listen to during rush hour traffic!

Nice, diverse collection.......2005-10-04

I picked this up in a 50-cent cutout bin with no sleeve or case about 8 years ago. It's an interesting mix of selections, from serious classical (Rachmaninoff) to jazz (Ellington) to pop adaptations (Flashdance theme). The latter is actually one of the more intriguing cuts on the disc. Though I wouldn't rank it as "one of the world's finest sounding recordings", it's a rousing orchestral arrangement of the Flashdance theme conducted by its composer, Giorgio Moroder. If all you've ever heard is the Irene Cara radio hit, it will make you appreciate this song in a new light. The sound quality of the rest of the disc is superb, esp. "The Magnificent Seven" theme, which makes a nice audio system demonstration track.
