Highly professional, but lacking in passion.......2007-07-17
The presence of a Russian virtuoso like Yefim Bronfman should have guaranteed genuine Slavic passion in the great Tchaikovsky Piano Trio, but Bronfman has increasingly been playing it safe. What is this tendency for star musicians in this country like Perlman, Ax, Midori, and now Bronfman to rest on their laurels? Comparison to the impassioned live performance from Argerich-Kremer-Maisky on DG makes this version of the Tchaikovsky sound half asleep.
Naturally the playing is altogether professional, and Sony has provided adequate sonics (though not a patch on the riveting DG sound). However, without total commitment on everyone's part, the Tchaikovsky Trio suffers from sprawl and waywardness, as it does here form time to time. In all, a good performance that misses the mrk for being something really special.
Powerful, highly recommended.......2003-06-19
There are several passable recordings of these trios, but I can finally say this is the one I wish to keep. The passion runs deep and the flaws are hard to find in this recording. (Note: I am heavily influenced by the rendition of the Tchaikovsky, less by the Arensky). Every other recording I have encountered left me wishing for more, and I listened to this one expecting to be disappointed, just I as had been with all others. I was instead left feeling quite satisfied. Some specific points: in the Tchaikovsky, the 3rd variation of the second movement, with perhaps the most exposed piano passages of the piece, Bronfman plays it with such brilliant precision that one is scarcely aware of how treacherous those passages are. Furthermore, the ensemble playing is precise every single step of the way, it never ever gets in the way of the intepretation (which is my gripe with almost every other recording). Also, in the re-statement of the main theme in the last variation, the performers choose to drive the tempo forcefully and passionately, instead of slowing it to a weepy mess as others choose to do. The result is a very satisfying ending. Bravo.

Customer Reviews:
It is something refreshing .......2005-05-05
This is a CD that you cannot find easily in the store. But Anton Arensky's paino concerto really brings us something refreshing. I like the Fantasia on Russian Folk Songs very much and I think this is truly a remarkable piece of Romantic music.
one of the weakest in the series.......2003-03-10
It pains me to be the first to throw cold water on this particular fire, but after reading all the other glowing reviews here, I must ask: what is the big deal? One might agree that these pieces are indeed artistic creations, but where is the hand of the inspired creator?
I am a BIG fan of Hyperion's Romantic Piano Concerto series. As a whole this series has unearthed some real gems and given them new life through GREAT performances-but...
Not here.
With the exception of the mildly entertaining fantasia, I could take or leave this disc without much emotional involvement. There are some moments of lyricism and beauty to be found here. That said, most of this music is pasty, derivative, and underwhelming.
In any event, I do not feel this is the performer's fault. The conductor has given us three other more than solid entries in this series. Mr. Coombs (the soloist) has been both revelatory and solid in this series (I loved his Glazunov and his Hahn/Massenet recordings, I was impressed by his Mendelssohn).
I believe that this music suffers from the same fate as much 19th century landscape painting. It may be pretty to look at, but you've seen it all before. We are called, as children of the Greatest Artist to partake in the act of His creation-not just to play variations on a dead horse.
The horse is too long dead here for me to recommend riding it.
Russian Romantic Renaissance........2002-04-25
This disc contains three works by two Russian composers who have lost most of the popularity that they once enjoyed. Whereas some of Arensky's works like his piano trio and suites for two pianos are performed with a certain regularity, it is only thanks to the attention that Stephen Coombs and more recently Ciprien Katsaris have given the piano works of Bortkiewicz, that the latter has been saved from complete obscurity.
Listening to this disc it is hard to come up with reasons why these pieces lack so far behind the attention that similar works by Tchaikowsky, Rachmaninov and Grieg get, since they equally share many of the elements that made these "greatest hits" such mainstays of the repertoire.
The Arensky concerto used to be a favorite piece of the young Vladimir Horowitz. Arensky's friend/kinship with Tchaikovsky shows throughout the work. The concerto starts with a broad scale maestoso that shows off Arensky's early talent in melody, piano writing and orchestration. It shouldn't come as a surprise that we're dealing with another Rimsky Korsakov pupil here. Curiously, towards the end of this movement we suddenly get an extensive quote from the introspective section of the Liszt Sonata, before closing in authentic Russian fashion. After the lyric second movement, the finale takes us in 5/4 time into the territory of Liszt nr.1 with clear elements of both Grieg and Rimsky Korsakov.
A brief Rhapsody on two Russian folksongs supplements the concerto by the same composer. If you had to guess the composer, Rachmaninov would be a likely choice.
The Bortkiewicz starts with an intimate lento, before moving into the style so common in the romantic Russian concerto. Yet, the instrumentation is very skillful and complements the lyrical piano part beautifully. In addition, there is a fine sense of harmonic development. The second movement starts out lyrical and elegant to develop into more dramatic Rachmaninov type territory. The finale has an array of Rimsky touches and could be described as Liszt and Scheherazade have a good time together.
If there were one very slight objection that one could make to the works on this cd, it would be their lack of an individual style. Yet, all pieces are well written in a pleasing style.
Coombs does a fine job and is again well assisted by the Scots. Yet, due to their similarity with the more familiar works by Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov you cannot help but wonder to what heights the likes of Gilels could have taken them. But let's not end with could haves, or should haves, but a resounding should buy.
Arensky Piano Concerto in F minor Scherzo- Finale.......2001-08-20
This was a tough piece to get a hold of, but it was worth the wait (I took about three months chasing this one down). From the perspective of someone who plays the piano, this is a show piece that I would love play. Stephen Coombs BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra obviously had a great time putting this one together
Romantic Obscura.......2001-04-12
If you enjoy a romantic piano concerto but feel, sadly, that you have exhausted the venue, take heart and take a listen to the two included on this CD. The Arensky concerto was composed while he was a student at the St. Petersburg Conservatory and clearly owes a debt to Tchaikovsky.
This is the first recording of the complete Bortkiewicz concerto. He too studied at the St. Petersburg Conservatory, but he also studied at the Leipzig Conservatory, where he came under the influence of the conservative German tradition.
The two piano concerti are worth visiting. Arensky's fantasia is extra icing.
This CD provides ample evidence that there are many little known composers whose work is very worthy of examination.

EXCITING PERFORMANCES VINTAGE STEREO SOUND BUT NOT SACD.......2005-09-27
Despite whar Mr Richman says in his review below this five disc box set does NOT consist of hybrid SACD discs. They are all CDs - generously filled but still basic 16 bit discs. It may be that Mercury's parent company plans to release these discs singly as three channel SACDs but here you get the two channel mixes that originally appeared on LP and on the 1990s CD releases. It would have been great to hear them in three channel - Dorati's "Firebird" sounds magnificent on SACD - but this box is still a bargain. There's some low level hiss and the occasional tape clunk but these are small blemishes on some exciting late 50s and early 60s recordings that make most of today's offerings sound sterile and cautious. Dorati's Tchaikovsky is never winsome or self-pitying. As a masterly ballet conductor Dorati never ignores the lilt and sway of the composer's waltz-inspired lighter moments - but he and the orchestra (London Symphony and Minneapolis) really let rip for the exciting brass perorations. Try the finale of the "Little Russian" symphony, or "Francesca di Rimini", for some real sock-blowing sound! Even if you own other recordings of these popular works try to find a space on your shelf for Dorati and the inimitable Mercury sound.
Dorati's MLP Tchaikovsky Gems Are Back!.......2005-05-25
Those familiar with my reviews on Amazon know my great love for the Mercury Living Presence series. Equally great is my disgust that so many of these brilliant recordings have been deleted in the last few years! Thankfully, some of these legendary performances are resurfacing as SACD hybrids. Unfortunately, they are now being sold at full-price, despite a competing hybrid series on RCA/BMG being available at midline. In spite of the added expense, I hope this MLP reissue trend will continue, and maybe we'll even see a few items getting their CD debut.
This Tchaikovsky Symphony Cycle by the great Antal Dorati has always been one of my favorite MLP offerings. While a two-disc set of Symphonies 1-3 and a single title of the 4th continue to be available in their original CD incarnations, the CDs of Symphonies 5 & 6 have gone out-of-print recently. However, with this box set they are now deservedly restored to the catalog. Even better is the fact that the four 5CD box sets being reissued have been so reasonably priced. This Tchaikovsky set, and the ones of Dorati conducting Bartok, Paray conducting French music, and Hanson conducting a variety of American music, including his own compositions, have a total cost cheaper than the original single issue CDs! Once again, Mercury Living Presence lives!

Rosa Ponselle Prima Voce.......2006-03-18
These are old recordings, but great from the standpoint that it is the only way we can hear an almost faithful representation of her great voice.
It is a very fine selection of opera arias.
Albert C. Ruocchio
Avatar or envoy of gods.......2006-02-14
Nasal ringing sound, like one of Caruso, Bechi but better. Frequent intrusions into men's repertoire ('Song of Indian merchant', 'In questa tomba oscura', 'Tre giorni son che Nina', 'Der Tod und das Madchen', etc).
Best singer, best voice.
Early retirement because of higher nasal impedance.
The most ravishing soprano voice. Ever........2005-08-23
Many would argue that this was the most beautiful soprano voice ever - or at least ever recorded. And it's a strong argument. Such richness, such depth, such warmth, such glorious freedom, such security - who else, before or since, can match them. Destinn? A bit blousy. Boninsegna? The voice changes through the passagio. Rethberg? Close, but no cigar. Tebaldi? A bit shrill by comparison. Callas? Dramatic, yes, but beautiful, I don't think so. Gheorgiu? Good by today's standards, but no contest.
No, this thick double-cream stream of tone is something to relish, to sit back and just enjoy. Try her 'Casta Diva' or 'Un bel di' to see how it feels when you approach every high note with joyous anticipation and not with the prospect of a wince (cf. Callas). The Nile aria from Aida is as near perfection as we have any right to expect this side of Opera Heaven - a wondrous piano high C. And on these discs you will also find one of my all-time favourite records - La Vergine degli Angeli from La Forza del Destino where you get, not only Ponselle's wondrous soprano at the top, but also her bass equivalent, Ezio Pinza, below. Two wonderful voices for the price of one.
The Nimbus sound, achieved by recording what actually emerges from the record into a room rather than directly off the shellac, is not to everyone's taste. But it is to mine. It allows the singer's voice to develop and bloom and sound, to my ears, very natural.
The richest, most beautiful voice in history!.......2004-02-10
More beautiful than Caballe and Sutherland combined! A voice like a gleaming red ruby, the greatest lirico spinto of the century. Her Verdi-recordings have found their equals only in Callas' insightful performances but she did not quite possess the creamy, gleaming luxury timbre that Ponselle had. Being reported as one of the biggest voice in history (On occasions she drowned out Titta Ruffo!!!!) she will dazzle you like only Callas could afterwards. She debuted as Leonora in Forza in her teens (I think she was 18) with Caruso as Don Alvaro and made operatic history. Her Gioconda was as legendary as her Giulia (Vestale), repertoire only to be sung by Callas to the same perfection. Her brilliant Aida puts most others to shame, as do both of her Leonoras. Two complete opera-recordings with her exist: La Traviata and Carmen. Get them both and be charmed by the most gorgeous voice in history!
Callas was correct..........2002-11-19
When I read that Maria Callas credited Rosa Ponselle as her vocal idol and only inspiration, the first thought I had was that if a soprano as great as Callas said this, is because it should be true. When I bought this CD I proved the affirmation was correct: you only have to hear Rosa Ponselle's voice and verify that she is one the best sopranos of the century, and why her voice was the inspiration of many Callas's roles, including Norma, La Gioconda and La vestale. The sound quality of this CD is incredible if we consider that the recordings dates from the 1920's

The Ensemble Raphael strike again!.......2006-02-24
Poetry and art expressed in music! This British ensemble bring to the soul in sound, the picture on the Cd cover, to life in lush tones, shimmering strings and in a wondrous celebration of joyous music making. No greater ensemble could have been chosen to bring to our hearing Arensky, an almost unknown composer save for his magical trio. The Tchaikovsky is a known item but the Arensky gem of a string quartet is new to most of us. Wonderful disk! I realize that chamber music for many is an acquired taste, but the music heard in this hour of playing is more than acquired; you have already acquired a taste for beautiful music and this cd is a sheer delight. Don't pass it up, or at least listen to it.

Customer Reviews:
Trumpet at it's best!.......2000-01-14
Sergei Nakarjakov is awesome! Everything about his playing is perfect. His tone and technical pursuits are amazing. Also amazing is that he takes technical show off piece like the Carnival of Venice and makes it MUSIC. The soul that is in this music is like nothing that I have ever heard and even if your not a trumpet player I would buy this album and as many other albums of Sergei Nakarjakov's as you could!

Album Description
The Russian composer Anton Arensky combined vivid elements of Russian Nationalism with an awareness of the work of the European romantics in a style which contained the prerequisites of the pianism of Rachmaninov and early Scriabin. The Three Suites demonstrate typically Russian attributes of humour, gravity and sparkling colour. Both the second and third Suites began life as piano duets. No. 2, `Silhouettes', is a work from the same vein as Schumann's Carnaval, in its five witty musical characterisations, and the Suite No. 3 is not so much a suite as an eclectic set of nine variations on a short vivid theme, which includes nods towards baroque and classical styles as well as the works of Chopin. The Suite No. 1 includes the Basso ostinato fourth movement which enjoyed a huge contemporary popularity.
Customer Reviews:
Color and Verve: The Orchestral Suites of Arensky.......2004-04-22
This is a pretty delicious disc! First of all, the music. Anton Arensky was a contemporary of Glazounov and like him, an admirer and imitator of Tchaikovsky. If you're familiar with Arensky's rather sedate tribute to Tchaikovsky, the Variations on a Theme by Said Master (once about the only piece you heard by the younger composer), you may be surprised to find that Arensky is capable of much more unbuttoned moods. In fact, his Suite No. 2, a set of musical portraits in the style of Schumann's "Carnival," manages to create witty little send-ups of stock characters such as the coquette, the buffoon, and the dreamer. But I especially like the mock seriousness of the first piece, "The Savant," and the colorful orchestration and panache of the last, "The Dancer."
Taken altogether, this is the finest of the three suites, but there are charming bits in the others as well, and the long set of variations that make up Suite No. 3 (sort of like the famous Theme and Variations from Tchaikovsky's Suite No. 3) have some quite memorable moments, including a Nocturne in which the orchestral piano provides liquid Debussyian arpeggios a la Claire de Lune. The inclusion of the piano is a rarity in music of the 1890s (after all, the first appearance of the piano in the orchestra came with Saint-Saens' Organ Symphony written about ten years before), but Arensky uses it both tellingly and tastefully. It adds great charm to the Menuet de XVIIIeme siecle, which--as you can imagine--is about as 18th-century as Tchaikovsky's Mozartiana or Rococo Variations--less so, in fact. But with its tinkly keyboard figurations, and punctuated by the triangle, this is a charming little period piece. There's some rather unhealthy bombast, too, in the Marche triomphale and the Polonaise that rounds off the suite, but it is well compensated for by the expressive Marche funebre and the Nocturne I spoke about earlier. Altogether, Suite No. 3 is a very attractive work.
I find the performances by Dmitry Yablonsky and the Moscow Symphony exemplary. No quavering horns and nasal woodwinds here as in the bad old days of Russian orchestras. The playing is clean and lively, and the recording is as full and colorful as the music. Give Anton Stepanovich a listen; just the thing to chase the blues on a rainy afternoon.

Customer Reviews:
Somebody listen to this recording!.......2006-04-04
Such a glorious set of Aresnky trios deserves more attention! Where are the fans of chamber music hiding these days? This is a gem of a recording. Lyrical and beautiful, these trios deserve at least a couple of hearings. The Borodin Trio outdo themselves with pinache, rhythmic joy, and a very special aura that has to be heard because there are no words to describe the magic performed here.
I came across the opus 32 trio by accident when I went to a Yale chamber Music peformance of compettion winners. They made a masterpiece of this trio, Arensky's best known musical piece. The second trio Op. 73, if not so well known, falls in the category of unjustly neglected music. According to the prgram notes of the concert, Arensky is not considered a significant figure in the history of music. What happened to the works abetween Op 52 and Op 73? That sounds like of lot of lost music to me. The program also states that the Arensky composed "ecletic" Romanic music cought somewhere between the Russian nationalism of the "Big Five" and the more refined "european" classicism favored by Tchaikovksy. Well in mho they're also caught between the Gorgeous and the very Memorable. His string quartet Op. 35 on Hyperion with the Raphael Ensemble, which includeas Tchaikovksy's Souvenir de Florence, is another musical wonder played as if they were masterpieces, but then again in my biased opinion I think this can be said about just almost every work the Raphael Ensemble have recorded. Please I'd like to known if anyone else enjoys these discs as I do. The Arensky trios are a wonderful gift!
