Fritz Lehmann, A Name to Know!.......2005-12-14

Those familiar with my Amazon reviews will know that I love DG's "Musik...Sprache der Welt" series, but the one title I had initial reservations about was Schubert's Incidental Music to Rosamunde by Fritz Lehmann. I had no idea who this conductor was, but after reading Jeff Lipscomb's glowing review I decided to get the disc from BMG. It was quite good and it wet my appetite for more by Lehmann, so I purchased his "DG Originals" disc of Brahms' German Requiem in the Amazon Marketplace (there are dozens of copies for under a dollar!) and I was hooked. Next I ordered two Import titles from the "Originals" series -- Mozart PC's 10 & 26, and this title featuring Handel's Water Music and Music for the Royal Fireworks. I have many renditions of Water Music Suites but not being a period instrument purist, I didn't have a complete one (Beinum, Kubelik & Marriner all omit parts). Well these 1951-52 mono recordings are nothing short of magical. Like many DG recordings from this era, the sound is so crisp and clear you'd swear it was in stereo. Although these performances feature modern instruments, Lehamnn and the Archiv label went to great lengths to follow the original score and annotations, and leave out the then popular Romantic embellishments. I was so impressed by Lehmann's accounts that I plan to make his two newest titles in the "Sprache der Welt" series my first post-holiday purchases.

Best recording of Handel's Water Music -- classical music at its best.......2006-07-07

The genius of this recording is evident in track 7, the famous Bourree (better known as the theme to the Frugal Gourmet cooking show, formerly on public television). If you listen closely you can hear some delightfully clever variations thrown in by some obviously brilliant musicians. You can almost see the members of the orchestra smiling at each other's surprising ingenuity. This is classical music as it was originally meant to be played -- these musicians are not slaves to the score, but rather, look upon the score as a starting point for sharing with the audience their own fresh musical insights. In this case, those insights happen to be spot on, emphasizing the warmth and almost Mozart-like playfulness of this music. In short, there is no better recording of Handel's Water Music, nor a finer example of classical music at its most exalted, or most intimate.

Music to Dine and Cruise on the Water.......2001-04-17

Fascinating listening when one realizes the original scene, royal party embarking and disembarking from barge to float for dinner. Large flotilla alongside.

Royal trumpetry to greet party, soothing sounds as gracefully cruised, and lulting sounds to accompany the cuisine.

This uses instruments of the period, so it takes some adjustment of the ear to the tinny sounds of the horns.

Overall, enjoyable recording.
