Customer Reviews:
CD set is misnamed.......2007-06-08
They should have titled this "classical music for people who love classical music" because most of the selections are typical classical music. The title suggests it would be lively selections of "light classical" music that is more upbeat, i.e. Sabre Dance, etc. I really don't hate classical music at all and have many classical CDs in my collection but I really wanted to hear more exciting selections. I won't be purchasing any more of this set but if you like traditional classical music these are good one.
Do not Buy.......2007-02-21
I do know it says classical music for people who hate it, but serioulsly you would have better luck never listening to classical music again. The recordings are awfull and do not do justice to any of the composers. Buy something else.
Classical Music for People Who Hate Classical Music.......2007-01-30
We love this set of CD's. I just got a new copy because my kids keeping taking our first copy with them so that they can listen at work or in their bedrooms but then I can never find them.
Seek better versions.......2006-12-09
If you are fairly new to classical purchases then compilation CD's can be useful for deciding what to buy next. Sometimes you only need a small taste of a piece to inspire you to buy a release with the whole performance on. The problem with this compilation however is that most of the versions are poor in performance or recording quality (or both) when compared to the best versions and the fact that the conductors aren't even credited on the track listing made me suspect that this would be the case. One of my favorite classical pieces is Tchaikovsky's 1812 festival overture but if the first CD version I had heard had been the finale excerpt that is on this compilation I may not have gone on to buy the whole thing. Luckily I heard Adrian Leaper's version first and Adrian's version is rather good.
My classical CD buying experience is limited to only a couple of dozen discs but I have found that the Naxos and Deutshe Grammophon releases are fairly safe. Avoid any release which does not name the conductors on the track listing or sleeve notes.
It Is What It Is.......2006-10-27
It's fitting that this page is fraught with the same kind of silly snobbery that turns people off from classical music (and necessitates collections like this) in the first place.
Any criticism of this compilation, which focuses on the quality of the performances or the fact that many tracks are excerpts, misses the point. This is not a collection for people who consider such things, nor does it purport to be. The idea is to package as many ultra-famous classical melodies as possible in one affordable collection and market it to people who have never purchased a classical recording. As such, top-tier performances are likely too expensive to be sold so cheaply and are unnecessary anyway. Those of us who already know and love a piece or two can forgive the compilers the inclusion of sub-par recordings, when we are exposed to so many other beautiful pieces for the first time.
It probably comes as a shock for some to hear that most people are not familiar with these classics. We may hear snippets on TV or movies, but are left with no idea as to the composer or historical context. With that in mind, it is extremely intimidating to begin buying classical. I suppose those among us, who so thoroughly dismissed the very notion of a boxed set like this, would have us begin by buying full albums by reputable interpreters. Surprisingly enough though, the majority of people would consider that a tad cost-prohibitive.
To conclude, this is a STARTER collection. It will either affirm a listener's feelings about classical music or lead to an interest in purchasing better recordings. Ideally, I suppose the interpretations would be better, but, for reasons mentioned above, that just isn't in the cards for a collection of this nature. If you're familiar with 50 different recordings of "The Ring" series, or have season tickets to the New York Philharmonic, then this probably isn't for you. For us cretins with limited foreknowledge of classical music though, it serves as a succinct introduction with little to complain about.

Customer Reviews:
Haydn with Period Panache!.......2007-04-21
That's how one prominent review tabbed this set! Went on to compare with Dorati's recording of same, and found this one relative equal, but with somewhat faster tempos and period faithfulness.
Having fallen in love with hearing Symphony #38 on radio with its dazziling oboe part, had to have that recording and in the bargain found many more of this 1760ish collection of Haydn's works to equally love.
Especially fond of No. 31 with its superb horn work and double bass, and also the 30th with its addition of trumpets and drums.
For the price brilliant five disc set to enjoy these in Haydn's symphonic cycle.
Worth acquiring at any price.......2007-02-23
Some say Haydn's ingenuity is even greater than that of Mozart's or Beethoven's. When listening to this brilliantly played set, I find myself becoming a convert of the belief. Haydn experimented with a variety of musical tools in these works. Surprising twists and turns are abundant. You will hear chamber serenade, harpsichord run, or violin solo in the most unexpected spots. Instruments are sometimes played in very unconventional ways resulting in exotic sounds - similar to what Berlioz and Mahler did later. Structure is toyed with in many symphonies, especially in the early ones.
In Austro-Hungrarian Orchestra, Adam Fischer finds an all-in chef's toolkit needed to cook these delightful ingredients. The woodwinds not only sing but also coo and meow. Strings melt your heart to a puddle with their exquisite pianissimo. Horns are expressive yet stylish. The whole orchestra knows how to knock themselves out when the music calls for it. The overall timbre is unlike any other orchestra I've ever heard, period or conventional. It's bright, edgy and folksy at the same time. It sounds like a virtuosic chamber ensemble rather than an orchestra except in the big symphonies. I believe the closest thing to their sound is Vienna Philharmonic playing Johann Strauss waltzes. Throw in a hint of gypsy flavor then it would be even closer.
Because this is a massive 33-CD set, there are inevitably a few imperfections. In a handful of spots the strings are not perfectly together. Adding to this, some of the violins have very distinctive tones which don't blend well with others when the music gets energetic. As to the engineering, some of the symphonies recorded early in the cycle are captured with too much reverberation, especially some London symphonies which sound soft-edged. But let me assure you the vast majority of the 100 plus symphonies have been recorded with crystal-clear brilliance.
One may find more sophisticated and smooth playing in some conventional performances (Colin Davis and Jochum) or crisper articulations in some period recordings (Bruggen and Pinnock). But Fischer and his hand-picked orchestra deliver more character and expressiveness than in any Haydn performances I've ever heard. Harnoncourt comes close but Fischer's set has more smiles. And his orchestra has the devilish ability to accommodate any mood Haydn's score throws at them - whether it's charm, wit, panache, or pathos. Their playing in slow movements is simply inimitable.
This set will be the source of joy for many Haydn lovers whether they are beginners just opening up the treasure chest or seasoned collectors with many other Haydn CDs. According to others' opinions, it compares favorably to Dorati's box, the only other complete set which I have not heard.
One final point - I wrote the review without the consideration of the price. In other words, this set is worth acquiring at any price.
Great Haydn .......2005-07-06
A superlative recording of Haydn symphonies. These perfomences are very enjoyable and i highly recommend them
Excellent........2004-03-15
To record the complete Haydn symphony cycle (107 symphonies or so, depending on which reference you choose) is no doubt a daunting task to say the least. Haydn's genius is evident in every one of these works, from the earliest to the experimental middle periods (but they are all experimental in some way), to the late, great works of the '90s. His symphonies not only provide almost endless formal and musical variety - they are an unusually accurate (if the current Hoboken numbering is corrected) documentation of a great composer's steady growth as a composer. This is why boxed sets of symphonies such as this series offered by Fischer and the Esterhazy Orchestra are so important, not only for those who love Haydn in particular, but for those who are interested in the development of the orchestra, the symphonic form, and the history of Western music in general.
As this set follows the incorrect Hoboken numbering system, the set recorded here includes a few of his earliest symphonies written in the late 1750s as well as those written during his "Years of Transition", to use Geiringer's apt term for those works written during the experimental years of the 1760s. These include the early masterpiece, no. 31 in D major, "The Hornsignal", the beautiful no. 21 in A major, the famous no. 22 in the "wisdom" key of E-flat major, "The Philosopher" (the first symphony to my knowledge that uses English Horns), and 2 minor-keyed works (I don't include no. 34 in this category because only the first movement is in d minor), nos. 26 in d minor, "Lamentatione", and no. 39 in g minor. (Incidentally, both of these minor-keyed symphonies had an obvious influence on Mozart - his d-minor fugue for 2 pianos and his "Little" g-minor symphony are the most obvious respective debtors to Haydn's examples here.)
This recording is excellent throughout. The sound is wonderful, the tempi and interpretations are clear, simple, and forceful and the playing is first rate. These sterling qualities are present in each of the symphonies recorded here and the only quibbles I have are merely interpretive. The technical difficulties written for the horn parts are played with absolute aplomb and even the occasional concertmaster and other string solo passages not written in the score (this is a liberty taken by Fischer) usually add to the interest rather than detract. Fischer occasionally prefers grace over fire and the occasional attempts to make the music more charming by using such devices as extremely clipped articulation or sudden (and sometimes nonsensical) volume changes or backing away from a forceful cadence are minor distractions. Overall, the interpretations are very good.
For this price, Nimbus is offering quite a bit of wonderful music that is handsomely packaged and extremely well recorded. The liner notes are succinct, yet informative and I guarantee learning will take place while listening and reading up on this great set of works. I highly recommend this recording.
(By the way, Amazon's advertisement for this set includes 2 works not included in the recording due to a mistake: Symphonies 'A' and 'B' are non-numbered symphonies and are not the names of two symphonies. They were included in Haydn's symphonic cycle after Hoboken (whose numbering system is mostly followed) had died. Symphony 'A' and symphony 'B' are included in this recording. Nos. 45, "The Farewell", and 71, an even later work, are NOT included in this recording.)
the cycle is complete.......2001-11-29
Well it took 14 years, but this 5 disc volume completes the 32 disc collection of Haydn symphonies.
As with the previous volumes this one is fully digital, the technical quality of these discs is excellent.
I have all 8 volumes and have been happy with every one of them.
The sounds of Adam Fischer and the Austro-Hungarian Orchestra are splendid. This group of symphonies (21-39) is quickly becoming one of my favorites.

More Fine Performances of Early Haydn Symphonies.......2006-08-10
This is the second and final instalment of recordings of early Haydn symphonies conducted by Kevin Mallon and played by the Toronto Chamber Orchestra (formerly, and on the earlier release, called the Toronto Camerata), all part of Naxos's recordings of all of Haydn's symphonies. The four symphonies recorded here are Nos. 18-21. Although numbered consecutively, these symphonies were not written in that order. Indeed, dating early Haydn symphonies is a bit dodgy, but suffice it to say that all of them were written in the early 1760s, when Haydn was in his twenties. And all but No. 21 were composed for Count Morzin before he went to work for Count Esterházy in Eisenstadt. The latter was possibly written as late as 1764. Haydn was in the midst, with these works, of creating the form of the symphony as we have come to know it. Nos. 18 and 19 are in three movements and have been called 'sonate da chiesa' ('church sonatas') because of their use of dotted rhythms and in No. 18 the use of a slow first movement. There is no reason to believe, though, that these symphonies were ever written for or played in a church. Nos. 20 and 21 have the usual four movements, but No. 21 has the somewhat unusual form of slow-fast-slow-fast movements.
With the exception possibly of No. 21, none of these four symphonies is one of Haydn's undisputed masterpieces, and although No. 21 has much to recommend it, it has usually been overshadowed by its successor, No. 22, probably because the latter has an easily-remembered subtitle, 'The Philosopher.' Frankly, I like No. 21 better, partly because of the innovative form of its first movement in which Haydn alternates two different ideas by using first all strings and then all winds. This movement is predominantly played sotto voce before bursting into a surprising forte and then followed by the two succeeding movements which crackle with energy.
Kevin Mallon is an early-music conductor to pay attention to. He seems to have the ability to shape the music subtly, obtain crisp rhythms and brio from his orchestra, a fine 25-member group of Toronto musicians otherwise members of the Toronto Symphony, Canadian Opera and Ballet orchestras, and the Tafelmusik and Aradia ensembles. I like that the booklet names all the instrumentalists involved. Mallon uses a harpsichord continuo that is almost entirely unobtrusive; the use of continuo has always been a bit controversial in Haydn symphonies, but scholarship suggests that at the Morzin and Esterhazy establishments the harpsichord was used in the symphonies, at least the early ones.
This release makes a fine companion to others in this series and can be recommended heartily.

Customer Reviews:
Classic Haydn.......2006-09-05
Sir Colin's cycle of late Haydn symphonies are classics and my preferred recordings of these wonderful pieces. The performances are colorful, elegant and well attuned to Haydn's sly humor. The woodwind colorations in the slow movement of No. 99 are worth the price of the disc in themselves. The Beethoven performance is no slouch either. There is one minor caveat. These are faithful replicas of the original 4 channel recordings so there's no separate subwoofer channel if you are relying on a subwoofer/satellite configuration and 5 channel discrete input. If your front channel speakers are not capable of reproducing low bass, the discrete surround mode may sound bass shy. Fortunately, my speakers have extended low end response and the four channel sound is very impressive. The hybrid disc also includes an SACD stereo layer that gives the benefit of the DSD mastering but absent the hall ambiance. I suppose you could use that option in a simulated surround mode, depending on how picky you are about such things. There's also the standard PCM layer as well. Both SACD layers are very fine. The silken strings are especially satisfying.
Quadraphonic Recordings Get a New Life in SACD.......2005-07-01
PentaTone Music was founded in 2001 by three former executives of Philips Classics (one of the classical music labels of Universal) together with Polyhymnia International (the former recording center of Philips Classics). They have made it their mission to release historic (their term) recordings in SACD format, and are using, mostly, quadraphonic (four-channel) recordings initially released on LP in the 1970s. Quadraphonic LPs, as you probably recall, did not live up to their promise both because their incarnation on LPs didn't actually produce all that had been encoded in the recording process, and because few listeners converted their home listening equipment to the quadraphonic format. However, with the advent of SACD (and with some tweaks of the recorded material by the engineers) many of the recorded performances on quadraphonic master tapes are getting a second life.
This CD contains three of the classical music world's favorite symphonies -- Nos. 88 and 99 by Haydn, and Beethoven's First. All conducted by Colin Davis, the Haydns are played by the Concertgebouw (or the 'Royal Concertgebouw' it is now designated) and the Beethoven by the BBC Symphony Orchestra. All three performances are excellent. But the big selling point here is the sound. These are hybrid SACDs, so one can listen to the plain-vanilla CD layer nicely on one's stereo, but when one listens on SACD equipment the sound blooms and it is really quite smashing.
The only complaint I have about these recording is that occasionally, as in the finale of the Beethoven, the pianissimo inner voices fade almost to inaudibility. This could be Davis's doing; his orchestra was plenty capable of playing almost inaudible pianissimi at his command (unlike some lesser orchestras), or it may have been the recording technique. However, this is a small criticism when the performances are considered overall.
I've given the release four stars because I suspect most buyers will be playing it on regular stereo equipment and in that format the sound is adequate but not much more than that. For SACD buyers, it rates five stars, particularly considering that these recordings were made over thirty years ago.

Customer Reviews:
Fantastic!.......2005-11-29
I bought this cd set years ago and they're still my favorite cds. Each cd follows a genre (baroque, classical, romantic, or modern and impressionist) and gives a great sampling of some of the strongest pieces in that genre. I don't know what I'd do without these cds.

Customer Reviews:
An unconventional interpretation.......2007-01-15
I find the Adagio of Haydn's Symphony 21 as written to be rather boring. This recording, contrary to the common practice today, uses a harpsichord as basso continuo, and I think this makes the first movement much more enjoyable (for a contrast, check out the Naxos version of this symphony, the best version without a harpsichord). The remaining movements have a good speed to them and show off the ability of the fine horn players (always essential in a Haydn symphony).
The CD also contains performances of the Cello Concerto in C and Symphony 96 ("The Miracle"). I've never cared much for this concerto (I prefer the later Concerto in D), but I did like Starker's performance in the final Allegro moto movement. The symphony is quite good, second only to Szell's recording for Sony Essential Classics in my opinion in how it expresses the symphony's numerous moods.

These performances are also available singly, but if you like one, then you'll like them all. Stanislaw Skrowaczewski's is one of the finest, most consistent Brahms cycles of the digital age. He has his orchestra drilled to produce a rhythmically firm, utterly transparent texture which he deploys in honestly exciting performances, totally faithful to both the spirit and the letter of the score. At mid-price, this set is one of those underdog achievements that proves once again that the big names don't always make the best records. --David Hurwitz
