This is a compilation--plus three previously unreleased selections--of some of the glorious Renée Fleming's finest work, 15 selections covering 13 composers. The rose-in-full-bloom quality of the voice is staggeringly beautiful: Her rendition of Rusalka's "Song to the Moon" is justly famous and is, alone, worth the price of this CD. Other highlights are Marietta's Lied from Korngold's Die tote stadt, an odd arrangement of the aria from Villa-Lobos's Bachianas Brasilerias No. 5, Manon's Gavotte, and a knock-down-gorgeous reading of Gershwin's "Summertime." The three new recordings are of Violetta's big first-act scene from La traviata, which features one of the most perfect trills heard since Joan Sutherland, a thrilling Cäcilie (R. Strauss), and a version of "You'll Never Walk Alone" which is so over the-top that it might make you look away in embarrassment. On the basis of this CD, one would have to acknowledge that Fleming is more interested in--and more successful at--pure singing than she is at character delineation (Butterfly sounds oddly like Wally who sounds too much like Norma), but it's not hard to tell why she's a superstar. Her voice and technique are one in a million. --Robert Levine

3 out of 5 stars Not all the arias were her best.......2005-01-15

There is something lacking. Although most of these are indeed her "Best" releases, some things could have been left out. Her O Mio Babbino Caro and her Casta Diva weren't her best efforts at all. Casta Diva, sung to perfection by other revered artists, sounded too breathy and fearful here. It has good chest notes, and it is definitely better than Joan Sutherland's Norma though. Her O Mio Babbino Caro is the usual aria sung in its usual way, without leaving any trace of awe at an ability of a singer to interpret the aria. Rachmaninov's Vocalise was good, and it was great of Decca to release her Song to the Moon on this disc. However, some new additions weren't all that good as well. For example, if you listen to her excerpt from La Traviata, you will find that she sounds like she was singing jazz when uttering out "Gioir!". I think Decca should have issued the live performance version of this instead. That was so much better. Also, they should have showcased more of the bel canto repertoire she had specialized in. That would have made this CD a gem!

4 out of 5 stars DIDN'T QUITE FULFIL MY REQUEST.......2004-11-22

THIS CD DEFINITELY BRINGS OUT THE BEST IN HER REPERTOIRE. SHE IS SOLID, WARM, AND BRILLIANT ON MOST OF THE SONGS. SINCE I OWN MANY OF HER CDS MOST OF THE TRACKS I HAVE IN DUPLICATE. EVEN SO EACH VERSION HAS A DIFFERENT FEEL TO IT. HER "O MIO" IS GREAT BUT GENERALLY I FEEL THAT KIRI TE KAWANA IS A LITTLE CLEARER THAN RENEE. HER "Ebben?...Ne Andrò Lontana" IS ALWAYS BRILLIANT FROM HER HIGH ENDS TO THE NECESSARY LOW NOTES TO FINISH THIS GLORIOUS TRACK. HER COUNTESS HAS ALWAYS BEEN A STRONG AND POWERFUL CHARACTERIZATION AND HER BUTTERFLY TEETERS ON HAPPINESS AND PAIN. THESE RICH LYRIC ROLES DESERVE A SOPRANO LIKE RENEE. I WAS HOWEVER, VERY DISAPPOINTED THAT SHE ADDED "SEMPRE LIBERA" TO THIS CD AS SHE'S NEVER BEEN A COMPELLING VIOLETTA AND CAN'T EVEN MUSTER THE HIGH "C" WE ALL EXPECT NOW A DAYS. HER RUSALKA IS ALWAYS MESMERIZING AND HER SIMPLICITY ON GLUCK'S "Das Mir Verblieb" WAS AN INCREDIBLE SURPRISE. I FOUND THE OTHER SONGS BORING DUE TO THE FACT THAT I DON'T LIKE THEM AND I KIND OF WISHED SHE WOULD HAVE REPLACED THEM WITH SOME BETTER WORKS. I MISSED HER SOFT AND DEFEATED "AVE MARIA" FROM OTHELLO OR HER FULL BODIED SPOILED MUSETTA IN "QUANDO MEN VO" OR HER RICH SADNESS IN "DOVE SONO"

4 out of 5 stars Fair Enough .......2004-10-01

This is a compilation. I can't say love them I think thatpeople want to be surprised by new things, instead of um things they already own.On the other hand a die hard fan wouldn't mind having an extra cd by their favorite artist.Fair Enough. There was one aria that was new to me"Cantilena Brasileras"by Villa Lobos that was very striking. Her voice flows like an unimpeded stream with a lush vibrato.Like I read in one kid's review "Renee has a silky, creamy, instrument that is very beautiful and caresses the ear",couldn't have said it better myself. I agree. One smart kid!!! One thing that I have to comment on that will not escape is the dull cover picture. Renee get a better photographer;you're far more beautiful than that. I'm sounding like her mother, dear lord! She is a fox!

4 out of 5 stars Fleming's High Points Well Covered in Compilation CD.......2004-09-06

Just one listen to the high points of this disc will make you realize why Renée Fleming is an opera superstar. Covering a ten-year period, this compilation disc covers a most fertile period for Fleming, absolutely one of the world's leading lyric and dramatic sopranos. What is particularly impressive is how many different styles she has covered, ranging from Italian bel canto to French Romanticism to Rodgers & Hammerstein. She effortlessly sings in six different languages, including what sounds like flawless Czech on Dvorak's "Měsíčku na nebi hlubokén" (which goes back to her family roots). Her powerful voice is expressive, almost buttery, which allows the listener to enjoy the coloratura agility she has mastered over the years and the tonal qualities she specifically defines for each aria. This is most evident on my two personal favorites - "Ebben?...Ne scoglio" from Catalani's "La Wally" (which will sound familiar to fans of the French eighties noir film, "Diva") where her crystalline voice complements the increasing power of the melody, and the haunting "Mariettas Lied" from Korngold's "Die tote Stadt".

Fleming also has a good sense of the characters she is portraying, for instance, on the "La traviata" aria, "È stano...Ah, fors'è lui...Sempre libera", one gets a strong sense of Violetta's conflict between the attractions of true love versus the free life of a courtesan. She also gets some sturdy help from tenor Joseph Calleja as Alfredo in this piece. But even in this number, the effect of her daunting runs and trills can be a bit overwhelming. She does keep this in check with the slower-paced tracks like "Casta diva" from Bellini's "Norma", which uses a choir in the background to great effect, and Rachmaninov's lovely "Vocalise". The well-worn "Summertime" from Gershwin's "Porgy and Bess" is nicely covered here, and it certainly invites comparisons to even Leontyne Price's definitive version. Fleming ends the disc with a rousing version of Rodgers & Hammerstein's "You'll Never Walk Alone" from "Carousel" that grows a bit too bombastic for listening comfort. Regardless, this disc provides a nice sampling of what this truly great singer has done over the past decade. A treat for her fans and highly recommended for anyone who wants an ideal introduction to her range of talent.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Gruberova's Extraordinary "Mein Herr Marquis", Sumi Jo's winning "Der hölle Rache".......2007-06-30

I bought that 2-CD set only for the extraordinary performance of Adele's "Laughing Song" ("Mein Herr Marquis") by Edita Gruberova. It is highly surprising (and inexcusable IMO) that a great label as Universal/Decca wrongly gives it to Kiri Te Kanawa, and that another great company (amazon) relays that big error on this site; the recording is quite recognizable (Gruberova can't be confused with anyone; and at her final, you can't confuse the particular audience of that live performance unable to refrain from blowing their stunning and applause before end), and you can check J. Strauss - Die Fledermaus / Te Kanawa, Gruberova, Fassbaender, Bär, Wiener Philharmoniker, Previn and search it, 1st for "Gruberova", 2nd for "Kanawa".

Another track is, alone, worth buying the CD: Königin der Nacht's "Der hölle Rache kocht in meinem Herzen" by Sumi Jo. Lucia Popp despite her quite deserved immense reputation for this, is beaten (IMO) by Cheryl Studer (purer and more subtle - at least when with Neville Marriner), who is in turn by Sumi Jo: Jo brings the incredible energy and speed and emotion yet chirurgical precision required by that piece full of terrible wrath and grudge (I once attended the Flute where Königin was on her balcony, pointing her finger at her daughter, far away in the court, giving full life to the ultra-powerful music and lyrics "The hellish revenge burns in my heart! Death and destitution to the traitor I hate! Strike him with this deadly weapon! Or you are not my daughter! never more and forever! Go away, ungrateful! Ungrateful! Everything is broken between us until he gives back his villain soul!"), she sings with perfect pitch, tempo and power even up to the 4-repeated highest note (F), with score in hand you find exceptionally little and small flaws, and only in secondary passages. And she sings with "no emotion added" (or removed!), I mean, she is quite accurate emotionally - not everyone is, particularly when singing perfectly such a masterpiece.

There are several more very good tracks (Casta Diva/Sutherland, Welche Wonne welche Lust/Kathleen Battle, O mio babbino caro/Fleming, Dôme épais le jasmin/Sutherland, Schubert's Ave Maria/Leontyne Price), each worth buying the disc, but I agree with previous reviewers that globally the selection is uneven.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful collection, even though not perfect.......2006-05-17

As many reviewers have said before, there is a lot of incoherencies in the choices of singers on this double CD. In order to be a truly ultimate collection, the boundaries of recording companies and rights must not interfere, as must have been in this case. This said, it is up to the private collector to accumulate his/her ultimate soprano collection, BUT these CDs are an enormous contribution!

It starts out very strong with beautiful pieces of, and then some singers repeat OFTEN. Not that they are bad choices, it's just that a greater variety would have been nice. More importantly it would have been great to have the "definitive" version/singer of a given aria. Just one example, Sumi Jo's Der Holle Rache is just everywhere as a previous reviewer mentioned -- let's not forget that there is a pristine-perfect-beyond-comparison of Lucia Popp's Queen of the Night also out there somewhere...just NOT on this particular CD...

As far as aria choices are concerned, that is a bit strange to me, too. Of all of Mozart's arias, why those and leave out the magnificent soprano aria from Zaide, "Ruhe sanft"? Hmm...But anyway, the CDs are much better than any other compilation I have of the same type. Highly recommendable after all.

4 out of 5 stars Breathtaking performances of standard literature.......2005-06-09

This CD is a delight from start to finish. It covers most of the most famous soprano arias and duets, featuring celebrated performances by such artists as Nillson and Sutherland, Te Kanawa, Fleming and Bonney. The booklet lists the information on each performance, but does not include the translations. As all are very familiar peices, finding the opera from which they are taken should not be much of a challenge. Not all are opera arias, either; we have "Sheep May Safely Graze" and "Let The Bright Seraphim" to mention a few of the sacred arias here. For opera collectors and those who are just starting to listen alike, this is a very enjoyable CD.

4 out of 5 stars Finally, a 2-disc soprano collection from Decca.......2004-01-09

This is a great compilation to have. I understand that no Maria Callas recordings are not available on this CD because she was never part of the company. There, I set the record straight for any fans of the late opera singer who question it. There are, however, some sopranos and mezzos who are a part of the company that were left off as well, which is my reasoning for giving a 4-star rating rather than a five. Where are Cecilia Bartoli and Mirella Freni. I know that Freni is featured as Mimi on the recording of Musetta's Waltz, but it is minor on the recording, and there should be a recording of her singing an actual aria of her own. Also, recordings of "Dove Sono" (by Te Kanawa, for example), "Voi Che Sapete" (by Bartoli, let's say), "Signore Ascolta" by Caballe, and the Song to The Moon should all be on this compilation. Plus I think that Tatiana Troyanos' recording of the Habanera from Carmen should be featured rather that of Marylin Horne's. Other than that, the #1 Soprano Album is great.

4 out of 5 stars The grandeur of the Opera.......2003-11-27

The #1 soprano album, is a compilation of the most popular opera arias.
This album includes some of the best female voices in history, such as:
Joan Sutherland
Monserrat Caballé
Birgit Nilsson
Renée Fleming
Leontyne Price
Sumi Jo
Kiri Te Kanawa
singing excerpts from Gianni Schicchi, Madama Butterfly, La Bohéme, The Magic Flute, Carmen, Les contes du Hoffman, among many others.

Higlights:
O mio babbino caro/ Fleming
Dome epais le jasmin/ Sutherland & Berbié
Der hölle rache kocht in meinem herzen/ Jo
Un bel di vedremi/ Crespin
Let the bright seraphim/ Sutherland
La mamma morta/ Caballé
Mild und leise/Nilsson
among others.

This album is, in fact, a very good choice for the people who enjoys classical music. For the people that is not familiarized
with opera, this is a great oportunity to approach bel canto with some of the most beautiful voices in opera history.

Note: This compilation it's probably not complete (we miss many arias and some names as Flagstad and Callas) but it's a very good opera selection. Enjoy.

I can't recommend this cd high enough!I was blown away after first hearing this remarkable album.Alessandra's voice wins you over from the first aria pace pace. Her voice is that of a dramatic soprano, huge and stunningly beautiful! Her high notes ring out with great clarity and power. She can also sing beautiful pianissimos when required.Alessandra even reminded me a little of Caballe on certain phrases and notes, such was the ethereal beauty of her singing here on american diva!I have heard many of her recordings and I have to say her most beautiful singing on record can be found right here,on this must have cd!
Alessandra's verdi singing impressed me the most, but all of the selections on this album are top rate. You also have to hear her In questa reggia,it is awesome in it's power and beauty! She also sings a tremendous Dich Teure Halle,by wagner.Surprisingly for such a powerful voice she also sang a lovely rendering of depuis le jour, with gorgeous soft singing, and climatic high notes!

This is a senational debut for alessandra,on the delos label.Anyone who loves beautiful voices with a dramatic flair, and awesome vocal power, should add this cd to their collection immediately! This american soprano is a bit underated, she should be more well known.

5 out of 5 stars A surprisingly good recital.......2004-05-15

This disc is very good. After having been severely disappointed with Alessandra Marc's "Opera Gala: Dallas Symphony" CD, I found this CD refreshing and quite impressive. Marc is an uneven singer. I found her singing on the other CD quite bad. She scooped frequently, but what really bothered me was her indifferent diction and lack of dramatic involvement, which compounded my dislike for her rather ugly tone and rapid vibrato. Truth be told, I've heard that since "American Diva" was recorded, Marc's scooping has increased significantly to the point of being a mannerism, and her tone has become far cloudier. This recital shows her voice at its freshest, with beautiful dark tone. She has a unique voice. It has a rapid vibrato, but I found that on this CD, I wasn't much bothered with that vibrato as I was on the other CD. Marc's voice has a dark core from which golden overtones emanate. She is one of those rare opera singers with an instantly recognizable voice. Contrary to what many people think, she is not a dramatic soprano. Rather, she is a large-voiced spinto. Her voice is biggest at the top, but it has a rather weak and colorless lower register.

This recital contains mostly superb singing and real dramatic commitment. Her scooping is mostly kept in check here. She starts off the recital by singing "Pace, pace, mio Dio". She sings this well and has the right voice for it. She cannot adequately float the piano high B-flat at "Invan la pace", but provides a powerful, fortissimo high B-flat at the close of the aria. This high note illustrates a particular problem she has throughout the recital. It seems like she cannot control the volume of her voice on forte high notes, although this just could be the microphone's inability to capture the full power of her high notes. Moving on, she next sings "Me pellegrina ed orfana". She sings this aria quite well. The next aria is "Ritorna vincitor". She gives this aria her all, which is quite impressive. There is real dramatic bite to her singing in this aria. She next sings "O patria mia". She hits the high C at the climax fortissimo. This note is huge, and it gives the microphone a real workout. Unlike Rysanek's high C in this same aria, Marc's is a relentlessly thrusting high note. It doesn't bloom, but rather plows away all before its path. At this point in the review, I should note that her diction is pretty good, though it could be clearer. Some of it borders on mushy, but it is definitely better than her diction on the "Opera Gala: Dallas Symphony" CD. "Ebben? Ne andrò lontana" is next. She sings this aria well and handles the difficult climax ably. "Io son l'umile ancella" is next. She sings this aria well, but it would have been more effective had she floated the final word, "morrà", instead of singing it loudly. "Vissi d'arte" follows. She sings this aria well. She next sings "In questa reggia". This aria shows off her awesome vocal power. The high climaxes of this aria are thrilling. "Depuis le jour" is the next item. She really has a voice that is too big for this aria, but like the liner notes say, it is wonderful to hear a voice as rich and sumptuous as Charpentier's orchestration. "Dich, teure Halle" is the last item on the CD. Marc sings it really well. I love this aria. The orchestration is lush and gorgeous and conveys all of Elisabeth's exultation.

The CD comes with very good liner notes, though they are a bit too laudatory towards Marc. The sound is quite good. The conducting is ambivalent. Much of it is too slow. Near the end of "In questa reggia", Marc waits for the orchestra to get moving before she continues singing. The orchestral playing is not spectacular, but is very able.

I highly recommend this CD.

4 out of 5 stars Power and Beauty - a great Wagnerian in the making?.......2002-04-11

I bought this CD purely because I had also recently acquired Jane Eaglen's recent recording of similar music. I know this isn't the forum to compare the two, but it's great to hear two such great and different voices in this repertoire in an age where we are constantly told that the dramatic soprano is a thing of the past.

The Marc Voice is an enigma. I first encountered her as Elektra and I'm pretty sure that german opera is where her talents are best spent (although she seems to spent most of her time singing Turandot these days which is seldom wise for vocal longevity). The sound is that of a dramatic voice, yes, but it has a sweetness and a slenderness that others lack. She can thus give an impression of vulnerablilty and youth which is rather unusual and a bonus in this repertory. The registers are well blended, she attacks the top fearlessly and without shrillness, and her bottom register is clear and pearly without any "bark". That said, there are some caveats here - firstly, I can't help feeling that some of this music really pushes her to the edge and the fortissimo high notes threaten to skid out of control, and she lacks a true piano.

In terms of what she presents here, her Verdi is reasonable but not the equal of less prodigiously gifted singers (Pace, pace isn't the same without a floated B flat). Her Puccini is impressive - one of the best "In Questa Reggia"s I have heard - though she gives it her absolute all which can be unnerving - and a competent Vissi d'arte. The highlight for me is the "Dich Teure Halle" at the end. It makes me really long to hear her as Elisabeth, Senta, Sieglinde. Could she ever be a Brunnhilde? Not yet - and not if she keeps on with Turandot - but it's an enticing prospect.

The cover material for this CD is unappetizing, the orchestral playing unremarkable. But Marc's beautiful voice and strong interpretative gifts are well worth a listed, si I recommend this disc.

5 out of 5 stars Alessandra Marc--THE BEST SOPRANO I have yet to find........2001-09-12

5 STARS-- Pure, rich and full of emotion, this phenomenal collection of performances by Ms. Marc is the finest example of Soprano in my collection. To be appreciated and shared, this cd is a masterpiece.

4 out of 5 stars Nice voice.......2000-01-07

Alessandra Marc has the most powerful high C I have ever heard in my life, and is able to sustain it. Her high notes throughout this album are superb. Her diction is slightly mushy, and her middle voice is a little bit too dark, but all in all, this is a fantastic album.

3 out of 5 stars Average performance.......2003-11-08

This disc contains three orchestral tracks, six aria tracks, and one choral track. It was recorded during three days of concerts in Dallas in September 1998. The recorded sound is clear and spacious.

The Dallas Symphony plays the three orchestral tracks well, but they do nothing spectacular with the music. Puccini's early work, Preludio Sinfonico, is quite beautiful and is worth a listen. The contribution from the Dallas Symphony Chorus in the "Guerra, guerra" chorus from "Norma" and in "In questa reggia" from "Turandot" is excellent. Their enunciation of the text is exemplary. However, they could have been better in "Casta diva".

The featured soloist is soprano Alessandra Marc. She has a huge, darkly-hued voice that can be easily heard over the orchestra. I, however, find the timbre of her voice to be heavy and matronly. Her rapid vibrato, magnified by her voice's large size, is quite annoying. Her diction is not ideally clear. Her consonants need to be crisper. Her voice has the right color for singing "Casta diva", but her breath control needs more work. It was quite disconcerting to hear such a heavy voice negotiating the delicate bel canto lines of this aria. She smudges the chromatic scales in the aria. Her small contribution to the "Guerra, guerra" chorus is not sufficiently angry. She is completely out of her element in Anna Bolena's Mad Scene. Her voice is far too heavy for Anna Bolena. In the Mad Scene recitative and aria, her dramatic commitment is non-existent. In "Al dolce guidami", she manages several respectable trills, but the final series of ascending trills is beyond her technically. The requisite nostalgia in this aria is just not there. In Helena's great aria, Marc sings well and enunciates the German competently, but her consonants need work. She is a native speaker of the language, English being her second language. In "Give me my robe", she is quite fine. She completely identifies with Cleopatra's character and she sings the high notes very securely. Her English is intermittently intelligible. Her rendition of "Vissi d'arte" starts with a scooping of pitch and is uneven in quality, but nothing goes terribly wrong. "In questa reggia" is given a powerful account, but she and the conductor are not always together.

This disc is definitely not a failure, but Ms. Marc could have been better.

3 out of 5 stars Mixed Bag.......2003-03-10

I agree with the other reviewers: What a Barber! What a Turandot! A glorious sumptuous enormous voice and one of the great Elktras of our day. I have to disagree with the other reviewers on some points: The slow introductions of both the Norma and the Anna Bolena arias are indedd beautiful, but she completely fudges her way through the passagework towards the end of both arias.

It is not an issue of my not liking the style, or some concept of Bel Canto that is a matter of opinion as with Fleming's recent disc, it's simply a matter of not singing the correct notes. She is a great singer and a great artist. So why then perform repertoire that is not really suited to her? This album would have been better with some Wagner, more Strauss, or some more American opera.

As for the Chorus in the Norma excerpts: they perform the dotted rhtythms in "Casta Diva" as if it were a strict march and it all sounds terribly unnatural asif they had been dilled to death by an overzealous chorusmaster.

To sum up: 3 or 4 fantastic tracks, 2 or 3 that are in my opinion an insult to the audience, and some well-played overtures to fil it out, if you like listening to overtures

4 out of 5 stars Great Voice.......2000-10-26

I am prejudiced, let me say. I think Alessandra Marc has one of the most gorgeous voices I have ever heard. Some don't enjoy her mannerisms. I'm afraid I do. She does not appear on every selection, and there are the occasional disappointments (the breaths she must take in the climax of Helena's Awakening Scene, for example). The Barber is spine-tingling. Makes me want to hear her do Andromache's Farewell! If her style doesn't appeal, fine. She gives me more pleasure than any opera singer since my beloved Leonie Rysanek. A big, sumptuous voice! It would rate five stars except for the fact that the orchestra/choal episodes are fine, not great. And Marc is not totally comfortable in all the repertoire.

After hearing Ms. Marc two years ago in Turandot in Turin, Italy and after having heard this CD, I cannot wait to hear her once again at this Met in this season's Turandot. What a fantastic voice. The Strauss alone is reason enough to buy this CD. She has it all: power, beauty of tone and truly thoughtful singing. Why do we even bother with the laziness of Eaglen when we have a dramatic soprano like this around?

    5 out of 5 stars A wonderful masterpiece.......2002-10-18

This is among my most favorite CD collections. The pieces on it are romantic, inspired, and haunting and only improve with age and repeated listening. This is that rare CD that enchants company and leads them to quietly listen, spellbound. A truly remarkable compilation of astonishingly beautiful music sung by an equally beautiful voice.

5 out of 5 stars RUN TO GET THIS CABALLE!.......2000-08-30

I say run to get this recording, you know how briefly they stay in print. This is a gleaming collection of Caballe's art. A wide span of recording years is covered here. Beginning delightfully with "Hijo de la luna" and a set of Spanish songs, the magic comes on quick. A recent version here of "My Heart at Thy Sweet Voice" is an irreplaceable treasure. Such understanding in the singing, such intelligent and mighty phrasing - just wonderful! And "Io son l'umile ancella" is rendered with colossal artistry, the final rising phrase so laden with genuine patience, it turns the merely artful into true art. It's a remarkable rendering of Cilea's aria. Disc 2 is the more expansive of the two- Caballe's take on "Sempre libera" ('67 version here) has no real peer, except maybe Sutherland's. The Charpentier is delicious as can be. What is that lingering feeling around this woman's singing? She is an uncompromising artist, we're so lucky to have these recordings.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An excellent sampling from a beloved soprano.......2005-09-24

This is a good budget-priced intro to de los Angeles featuring arias from her most famous recordings. She is in great voice and lovable throughout, although the recorded sound varies widely and the digital transfer is wiry and fierce on the top end at times.
