This is a great set of recordings for the money, the only problem was I've had to clean some of the CD's before they played correctly.

This set is a good way to start listening to classical music. It's very well produced and easy to listen to. I purchased it to use as part of my world history high school class. It would have been nice to have some bio information on the composers. However, the product is exactly as advertised and good value for the money. The students were intrigued by how many of the excerpts they had heard before.

Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30

Although I studied classical music at school, I had all but forgotten it until I bought this set. I heard several tracks I haven't heard for over 30 years, and I had been humming Brahms's 'Hungarian Dance no. 5' for years without ever knowing what it was and it was on the disc, so that was nice.

I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.

It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!

Classical Masterpieces of the Millennium [20 CD Set]

A very helpful collection.......2007-03-24

I define this set as an excellent way to find out who you like, and who you don't, among 20 of the important composers. It opens the door to purchasing more complete pieces by composers you do like, and can save a lot of time and money in the process.
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.

A great way to start a classical music collection. It's nice to have a full CD of each composer. It makes it easy to keep track of selections/composers I already have and what composers I still need to puchase to complete my collection.

Melodic phrasing.......2007-05-03

Camille Saint-Saens was merciless in composing a score, often demanding performances that crowded the very limits of what is possible. Consequently, there are a lot of recordings that are frustrating to listen to because one can hear where the work is close but unfulfilled. This anthology of recordings compiled by Philips is the holy grail of Saint-Saens because the choice of conductors and artists was obviously based on melodic phrasing. There is no better performance of the seamless second movement or of the third movement's full string-section counterpoint in Violin Concerto No. 3. This CD set has the best Danse Macabre ever done; people think they know this symphonic poem, but unless they have heard the one conducted by Bernard Haitink, they have not. This Danse Macabre is symphonic perfection. Again, people think they know the Introduction and Rondo capriccioso, but the one with Henryk Szeryng playing violin and conducted by Edouard Van Remoortel transcends and bewilders the mind. Both piano concerti, No 2 and especially No. 4, these works open a new musical paradigm, the piano played by Michele Campanella in No. 4 making music only Saint-Saens knew a piano could make. The undeniable conclusion is that the performances were searched for and chosen as a tour de force of melodic phrasing, with an impressionist composer who imagined brilliance beyond this world.

I must admit that the Penguin Guide was overly critical of this CD. They said the recording of the Organ Symphony was not exciting and they are certainly far from being correct. The standard by which I judge the Symphony is mainly (if not almost) purely based on the finale. Out of the recordings I have heard this is the finest account. I found the Ormandy version a bit too fast forsaking the majestic feel. The Levine version is well played, but there just seems to be some issue with balance and heaven forbid the Berlin Philharmonic percussionists making a mistake near the end (they played 2 bars late). Dutoit's account is fairly similar to this recording, but I find Edo de Waart's recording has a more 'natural' and richer sound. There is something magical in the finale, the organ is brilliantly captured throughout. Polished, balanced, finely controlled tempi and well-executed this is the best version of the Organ Symphony. If you're starting a Saint-Saens' collection, this 2CD set will certainly not disappoint. The accounts of the other pieces are first-rate.

Excellent Recording.......2003-10-03

As an orchestral player (violinist, violist) and student conductor who is currently in a performance cycle of Symphony No. 3 "Organ", I think that this is one of the best recordings I have heard of the symphony. I recommend it to anyone who is looking for great balances and a full sound of an orchestra!

Superb Collection.......2000-11-05

This was my first Saint-Saëns CD, and I did not quite know what to expect. It was love at first hear(?!). An excellent collection, ranging from the humorous "Carnival of the Animals" to the serious Organ Symphony. If you are not familiar with Saint-Saëns, I would strongly recommend this collection as a great introduction.

Worthy to buy in what fourth pianoc oncerto concerns! .......2006-07-16

Through the times, the mysterious charm of Saint Saens' Fourth Piano Concerto, despite all the well known disdain for the works produced by most of the French composers in the second half of the XIX Century ( Edward Lalo, Jules Massenet, Emanuelle Chabrier and Gabriel Pierne among the most representative ones) and his evident lack of intention, just cheered of visible frivolity in most of cases; finds a solid exception to the rule in two composers Saint Saens and Gabriel Faure.

I am not totally convinced if this work must be considered as a Concert; I have always thought about it as Theme with Variations a la Cesar Frank and von Dohnayi's Variations on a nursery song for instance. It `s hovered for a visible lullaby vision, it's a lively page with major pretensions, musically not so rich and developed in ideas as the Second Concerto, but it allows you to solace yourself inside rational lyricism if I may.

There are four memorable performances about this Concerto; this overwhelming recording with Casadesus in top form, Alfred Cortot, Jeanne-Marie Darre and finally Gabriel Tachino.

But this version is the most remarkable of them.

Powerful.......2001-07-08

It is a pity this disc is currently out of print...my hope is that it will be reissued as part of the Bernstein Century series, with perhaps improved sonics. I have compared this version of the "Organ" Symphony of Saint Saens to other versions, most notably Munch with the Boston Symphony (RCA) and Paray with the Detroit Symphony (Mercury), and this recording stands up very well against these competitors. I was impressed by the orchestral detail in the opening Allegro Moderato, and particularly moved by the second movement's romantic climax. Similarly, the third and final movements bring exciting moments, and the organ entrances are full and brilliant. I like the way Bernstein and the NYPO are able to capture the nobility and grandeur of the piece without sacrificing the wonderful subtleties also present in this symphony. Fortunately Bernstein avoids some of the "over the top" excesses which he succombed to on some other recordings, and although the sound is not as good as some digital versions now available it has been improved significantly from the original LP. The Rondo piece also included is a delightful bonus, especially since this was not included when the symphony was first released on cd.

Superb Saint-Saens.......2001-01-13

Most people are probably introduced to Camille Saint-Saens via "Carnival of the Animals," a work that the composer did not allow to be published during his lifetime. The piece's inclusion in Disney's Fantasia 2000 will most likely give a new generation the impression that Saint-Saens is a composer disposed to light-hearted whimsy. In fact, Saint-Saens was a serious composer who has left us with at least four compositions that should be in every intermediate classical collection -- Symphony No. 3, Piano Concertos Nos. 2 & 4, and Cello Concerto No. 1. And with the advent of the CD, there are several discs that combine many of these four works -- most notably the Sony Essential Classics title that combines the latter three compositions mentioned above, and this Bernstein Royal Edition which couples the 3rd, or "Organ," Symphony and the 4th Piano Concerto. When it comes to the "Organ" Symphony, an entire generation of classical listeners was raised on Charles Munch's recording on RCA Living Stereo, and that performance is deserving of the high praise it receives. But this Bernstein performance is every bit as powerful as Munch's, and for those of you who already have other performances of the 2nd Piano and 1st Cello Concertos as I do (Rubinstein and Fournier respectively), the inclusion of the 4th Piano Concerto and "Introduction & Rondo Capriccioso," with the legendary Zino Francescatti on violin, are most welcome. In any event, keep an eye open for this excellent disc.
