If those Gregorian chant discs seem a little, well, limited lately, perhaps it's time to move on to something equally spiritual but a bit more harmonically interesting. This disc, well-performed by the Robert Shaw Festival Singers, and conducted by the legendary choral leader, features a ravishing score by Rachmaninoff and is sung a capella, as is all Orthodox church music. (For a heartrendingly beautiful number, listen to the second cut, "Blagoslovi, Dushe Moya," or "Bless the Lord, O My Soul.") Along with well-tuned choral singing, there is a fine solo contribution by tenor Karl Dent. --Sarah Bryan Miller

3 out of 5 stars OK, but not the best version.......2006-11-19

This was the only version I had for the longest time but although I enjoyed the piece I never was that excited by the performance. Then I listened to the Swedish Radio Choir version --- unfortunately, Robert Shaw Singers sound like amateurs next to these guys. First you realize how Americanized the Russian is on Shaw's recording and second you realize how weak the basses sound. The sum experience for the Shaw is that although quite beautiful at times it is overall muddy and the choir is not together (the opening number is especially noticeable --- it sounds as if the basses are about an eighth to a sixteenth behind ... and the diction ... let us just say that the choir needed ALOT more prep, so I understand why a few reviewers who seem Russian would call this trash ... imagine James Brown sung with the a strong Swedish accent!). Lastly, I think Shaw was attempting for what the French call the long line --- in other words he wanted the melodies to flow one into another as if one giant etheral exhalation. Unfortunately, he ended up with too little variance in dynamics and, with the diction problems, a rather bland sound many times.

Sorry to be so negative, I have heard other work by Shaw that is quite georgeous and worth keeping --- unfortunately not this CD.

I strongly recommend the Swedish Radio Choir or try the Russian choirs mentioned by others or even Holliard --- I do not know these versions at all but if you find one in the library try them out.

5 out of 5 stars This is a GREAT recording!.......2006-08-05

I like this recording very much... as does everyone I know that owns it. I would not hesitate to purchase it again should the need arise.

For a truly fantastic reading of the Rachmaninov Vespers check out the Polyansky recording on Melodiya.

2 out of 5 stars another dissenting review, sorry ;).......2006-03-02

First I was eager to try out some Robert Shaw stuff because I read that he did a good Bach B Minor Mass. That one wasn't nearly as good as other versions I've heard (Gardiner, Parrott, Herreweghe) but I thought I'd give him another chance & picked up his version of Rachmaninov's Vespers (aka All-Nite Vigil). I have to say I honestly don't understand what the fuss is all about. (goes for both Shaw recordings I have) I think Shaw really burned his bridges with this recording. Maybe it's just that I don't like the sound of a big choir; I much prefer a small(ish) chamber choir sound. I'm not sure what it is about Shaw's recordings; they just sound sluggish & 'blurry' to me. Polyansky's & Hillier's versions are way beyond this one, & any other recording of Rachmaninov's Vespers that I've heard. The best 'western' version is probably the one by Matthew Best & the Corydon Singers. That's not saying much imo since there's really no comparison between a 'western' choir & 'non-western' one.

1 out of 5 stars VALERY POLYANSKY'S VERSION IS BETTER.......2006-02-06

It just is. Deal with it. Buy it here: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002T2QC4/ref=pd_sbs_m_3/103-2962540-4613441?%5Fencoding=UTF8&v=glance&n=5174

Trust me on this. Russians sing their own music better than non-Russians. This is a fact. Polyansky's version is more beautiful. This is also a fact.

So that's that.

    5 out of 5 stars Blissful.......2007-06-28

Written in 1916 at the depths of his depression over what was happening to his native Russia, Rachmaninoff poured his soul into this work.

And what a work it is! And Mr. Cleobury and the boys of Kings College do a superb job of bringing its every mournful nuance to life.

To have died and never to have experience this music would be sad indeed, for through its sadness there is a radiance which transcends and carries one away to blissful realms then gently back again.

4 out of 5 stars Rachmaninov Vespers; King's College Choir, Cambridge.......2006-08-14

The music is hauntingly beautiful. The essence of it is captured by the sound one only hears from the clarity of an all male choir. The clarity of the boy's voices and the wonderful blend of the choral scholars make this the ideal recording to own to experience what Rachmaninov's music was trying to encapsulate. Everyone should own this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Unmatched Clarity and Beauty.......2001-07-10

As a great fan of this particular piece of music, I can honestly say that the performance given here far outstrips any other that I have experienced, even that of the St. Petersburg chorus, which sounds weak and unrehearsed in comparison. It is hard to imagine a more convincing, moving, and wholly satisfying account of this great masterpiece, which I think is perhaps the most demanding and exacting choral music ever. Those who listen with a pre-concieved notion that an English choir could never do this music justice will be silenced immediately by the blistering opening chords, or the visceral climax of "The Veneration of the Cross". Yet, the "boy-choir" sound that King's is able to achieve allows for unparalelled clarity in the most introspective moments, such as the poignant tenor solo in the Nunc Dimmitis where the blending of accompanying tenors' and altos' imitation of tolling bells is absolutely breathtaking. The delicate shifts in harmony are like glass, threatening to shatter if even one small mistake in intonation or diction is made...this choir makes none. Another highlight is the climax of the Hexapsalmos (movement 7) where the choir works itself into a cosmic frenzy, exploding into a great wash of sound on the word "slava"(glory), and immediately subdues itself for the hushed ending. Anyone who has not experienced this recording is missing a truly moving, spiritual experience. By far the best account of this piece, ever.

5 out of 5 stars 5 STARS for the best.......2001-06-21

Rachmaninov is one of my favorite classical composers. His works are wonderul. You chose some of his best works and made them sound good. I'm sure not many people listen to classical music, but if they heard this they would love it. The way all the songs turned out is so beautiful. I am listening to it right now and I cant stop closing my eyes and feeling the gorgeous music. Again I think this is a wonderful CD that everyone sould hear and enjoy. THANK YOU Again thank you!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended Rachmaninoff Vespers.......2001-05-31

This is a piece of outstanding work from the Choir of King's College. Its principal difference from other recordings is that it uses boy sopranos instead of a mixed choir and, while I was initially skeptical, I would call this CD a great success.

Ensemble, balance, and intonation are excellent throughout, as is recording quality. The boy soprano timbre floats on top of the group excellently, although it does strain in some of the louder sections and towards the end. The basses have a solid low C, although the Bb is inconsistent and not secure enough at the end of V. The group's Russian diction is uniform and excellent as well. Mr. Cleobury does a particularly beautiful job of crafting the melodic lines in IX, X, and XI. Some of the tempos are faster than other recordings and I wish that he had let his choir take V at the same pace as XI. The Nunc Dimittis here is one of the fastest that I have heard, and although the intonation and ensemble never suffer, some of the words do blur together. I would prefer that the soloist tone it down a bit as well, especially in V, where I heard the same bizarre ornament that Robert Shaw's tenor soloist inserted.

This recording also opens with chant, which seems to be becoming standard procedure on newer recordings, as groups are working to recreate the liturgical setting of the work. Notes are good throughout, and transliterated texts and translations (as well as sources) are included. I wish that someone would include the original text in Cyrillic letters with a recording of this work!

This is an excellent Vespers recording, although it doesn't beat out Chernushenko's on Russian Season. The use of boy sopranos gives it something unique to offer and the recording is certainly not short on emotion. If you enjoy choral music, this deserves a place in your collection. It is a great way to enjoy one of music greatest treasures.

5 out of 5 stars A Hollywood Ending? No, it's just Rachmaninoff Very Well Done.......2006-04-29

Well, this is yet another attmept to cash in on a film that was about a pianist who shall remain nameless here. But though "Shine" was fun filmmaking, and well-acted (especially by the star Geoffrey Rush) the pianist here is no David Helfgott. In the Rachmaninoff 3rd Concerto we have the most expansive and loving reading imaginable from Vladimir Ashkenazy, an extraordinary strongman of the piano.

At over forty-six minutes, this is only a few seconds faster than the Alexis Weissenberg/Bernstein version. The big difference here is though Weissenberg and Bernstein clearly love and play the piece well, the trump card here is the glorious Philadelphia Orchestra, under its venerable longtime music director Eugene Ormandy. How rich and lush the strings sound here! And yet nothing is mealy and overripe, just full to the point of bursting, a rare achievement. Rachmaninoff may have played his music faster than this, but his aristocratic bearing is simply different from the extravagant expansiveness of this performance, which is capped off by a tremendous reading of the larger ossia cadenza in the first movement.

I can't vouch for the other items on the disc--can't say I listened too carefully to the other things on it! I am simply amazed at Ashkenazy's pianistic powers of prestidigitation and persuasiveness. (OK, no more alliteration, alright?) This is one of my favorite versions, next to Gavrilov with Muti, Weissenberg with Pretre and later with Bernstein, Berman/Bernstein (on the big Bernstein box from the New York Philharmonic), and a few private versions of the work that I have. If RCA is smart, they'll keep this disc in print.

    5 out of 5 stars The Third.......2002-02-18

I got this recording for one reason. The Third. If you have never heard the Ashkenazy/Ormandy recording of the Third, you must get this CD.

It is hard to believe that this is a recording from a live concert. The audience is noise is almost non-existent and the performance is so pure and precise that it feels like a studio recording. What sets it apart, however, is the passion and emotion that is communicated when I listen to it. Dale Warland brings out the very best in his singers and allows me to feel like I'm really experiencing something fresh and of the moment. There are lots of great recordings of this work, but this is one of my favorites. Another superb recording from America's finest professional choir.
