5 out of 5 stars Rheinberger's Nonet--Outstanding!!.......2004-12-24

There are some artists who have a good technique and understanding, but are only endowed with limited original inspiration. This is not to knock them: it's merely a statement of fact. Such artists then occasionally come up with one or two excellent original works, and that's all. This is what separates them from the truly great artists who create numerous works to form a great body of work--an oeuvre.

Rheinberger is one of these "little" artists; and his Nonet is one of his few truly great works. He was truly inspired, and with his knowledge of technique, created at one hammer-blow (as it were) a gorgeous jewel.

Rheinberger's Nonet is excellent enough to compare with Schubert's Octet and Beethoven's Septet: in fact, I suspect this was Rheinberger's intention. It's wonderfully scored; it has excellent, original melodies; and the overall technique is outstanding. Rheinberger also wrote some other fine chamber works, but his Nonet is his masterpiece. He wrote quite a number of organ works, but for those I would go with Louis Vierne.
