Impeccable English Style.......2007-07-13
The Tallis Scholars do their namesake proud.......2006-07-27
These recordings were made 1985-1998, and they all sound great. Included in this collection are most of Tallis best and best-known works: the two Lamentations of Jeremiah, O Sacrum Convivium, Gaude Gloriosa, Tunes for Archbishop Parker's Psalter (which contains the theme that inspired Ralph Vaughan Williams' famous Fantasia), and the incredible 40-part motet Spem In Alium (which is one of the supreme masterpieces of the 16th century). Unfortunately, there are some notable absences, such as the Tallis Scholars' own recording of O Nata Lux. The Mass for 4 Voices, certainly one of Tallis' major works, is also nowhere to be found. Of course, there's only so much music that will fit onto two CDs, but it's still a shame that they couldn't fit at least one of Tallis' masses. Nevertheless, the music that's here is beautiful and powerful.
The Tallis Scholars themselves need no introduction. They're one of the most famous groups specializing in Renaissance music. It needs to be said, however, that if you're looking for "authentic" recordings (that is, recordings that approximate what the music originally sounded like in the 16th century), you might want to look elsewhere. The Tallis Scholars use female singers instead of boys or (ahem!) castrati (though it's doubtful that Tallis would have used or written for castrati himself). And one could complain that these recordings use too many singers for some of the smaller pieces or that the sopranos overpower some of the larger ones (like Spem In Alium). I'm neither an enthusiast nor an opponent of the authentic-performance movement; since we're listening to recorded music anyway, these issues strike me as moot. The Tallis Scholars are experienced and accomplished singers, and they achieve their primary goal: to provide superlative-sounding recordings of important early choral compositions. If you're looking for a fine compilation of Tallis' music or an excellent introduction to Renaissance music, this is it.

A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10
The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).
This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.
I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.
a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15
Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

Dowland did for lute music what Haydn did for the string quartet and Beethoven the piano sonata. The finest lutenist and songwriter of his age--he composed several of the greatest hits of the late 16th and early 17th centuries--the surviving lute works constitute a sort of encyclopedia of the possibilities of the instrument. There are song arrangements, dance pieces, tributes to the composer's friends, even a musical self-portrait. Much of the music is fashionably sad. Lute songs generally deal with the agony of lost love, and Dowland's most popular tune was called Lachrimae (Tears). Paul O'Dette is simply the best lutenist alive. These five discs are available together at a special price, or separately. A reference edition. --David HurwitzCustomer Reviews:
Outstanding.......2007-03-31
It's not heavy breathing.......2006-08-22
Others have remarked on the "heavy breathing" noticeable on the recordings -- it's not heavy breathing, but the movement of his fingers on the gut strings making that sound.
Technically good, emotionally bland. .......2006-04-11
but especially in the US, this set becomes an essential "must have" for all lovers of the lute.
Yet it somehow disappoints.
I am sure that Paul O'Dette is brimming over with virtuousity and a technical expertise
that I am hardly one to pass sound judgement upon.
But the recordings have a flatness and monotony;
the songs are rendered with precision, but seem to lack feeling, empathy, or enthusiasm throughout the offering.
It is an impressive compendium, and I'm glad I purchased it.
There are very few lutenists out there producing any music at all, so Mr. O'Dette should certainly be praised
for delivering such a substantial feast to our ears.
It just should have had more flavor.
Where is Konrad Ragossnig when you need him?
Highly recommended.......2005-10-23
A few tunes appear more than once as Dowland reused some work, but the arrangements are sufficiently different to be interesting. It is his complete lute works, after all. Some might criticise the set for sounding too much in the same style. It is the work of one composer, and if you happen to like the style, as I do, this is a pro rather than a con.
Another reviewer mentioned obtrusive breathing on the recording. I had listened to Volume 1 for two years before reading the review and had not noticed this. On listening carefully, there is breathing audible, but I do not find it a problem. Perhaps it depends whether one listens to the music or the background.
just a warning..........2005-10-14

GOLDEN AGE OF BREAM.......2006-02-06
One of the American selections consists of 4 pieces by Byrd, the other of 5 by Dowland, for whose work Bream seems to have a special affinity - I own a particularly fine Bream LP dedicated to Dowland, which I hope may see reissue on cd by and by. There are three other Dowland numbers among the studio performances, and the others are by a variety of less-known composers, some of them names I know others not, but all good-quality stuff, or so they seem to me. The liner is fairly basic in what it tells us, partly of course because little is known about some of the composers, even their dates of birth and decease having to be given approximately. What I would like to have seen explained more clearly is the precise status of the `popular tunes'. Greensleeves is here for one, although not exactly in the shape we know nowadays, as for example in the fantasia that Vaughan Williams wrote around it. On this disc it is attributed to one Francis Cutting and it's described, whether intentionally or through inadvertence, as a folk song. It doesn't sound any folk-song to me (not that I complain about that) and the liner-note writer makes no reference to one possible author I have often seen given the credit for it, namely Henry VIII, and I suppose that this is because he does not deserve such a mention. I was particularly pleased to see that I had acquired my second performance, in a collection that to this day does not have all the symphonies of Mahler nor even all Beethoven's piano sonatas, of the Carman's Whistle, a ditty of the demi-monde.
This is a disc that I would wish to recommend to music-lovers in general and not just to enthusiasts for `ancient music'. The compositions themselves are attractive and a number of them show real depth. The selection has been done carefully, with an adept mixture of lively and introspective numbers, and the whole set seems to be over in less than its actual 66 minutes. As for the playing, enthusiasts for one of the greatest instrumental artists of what I suppose I should now call the previous generation will find another treasure here. The liner-writer talks coyly about changes in Bream's style over the decades. That took place from him as it did from other great performing musicians, but what did not change was the sheer quality of it, and this superb set is a welcome reminder of that.

So rich, so beautiful.......2006-07-08
Sound in Spirit is a richly evocative and endlessly rewarding musical journey, featuring compositions from diverse artists and genres. Some tracks include ambient outdoor recordings, percussion, or a guest vocalist or two. The liner notes indicate that this, more than any prior Chanticleer recording, is meant to be listened to all in one go, as a shimmering whole that transcends its disparate indvidual elements. Such cohesiveness in a musical release is a remarkable feat by any measure, but Chanticleer truly delivers. Buy it.
A glorious song.......2006-03-08
I paid for this?.......2006-03-08
I was shocked that what I was listening to was really the same Chanticleer on the Rensaissance records I have. I might have enjoyed this more back when I was dropping acid and eatting mushrooms.
Champions of the new and adventuresome........2006-02-17
The more you listen, the more you realize there is an astonishing amount of variety in this recording. Anyone who is a fan of Chanticleer's adventuresome excursions, incredible flexibility of vocal techniques, and flawless singing will not be disappointed.

beautiful music.......2005-10-14
The sound quality here is very good. My only complaint is faint breathing noises in the background. These noises are more apparent on some tracks than others. But overall they don't bother me. I bought the Paul O'dette Dowland set, and for me, the breathing noises just ruined an otherwise amazing performance.

Other recent King's Singers' recordings on this label have reaffirmed the ensemble's credentials as compelling advocates of contemporary music. Here, only the most hardhearted of early music purists could fail to find the infectious cocktail of popular and religious Spanish music--largely 16th century--going to their heads, even if the King's Singers add the occasional theatrical embellishment. The music (much of it by "Anon") is organized into five categories, among them "fire" and "water" (with the alternative implications of ardor and alcohol). Of the named composers, none takes the ear more readily than Mateo Flecha the Elder. His La Bomba, one of several lengthy ensaladas (miniature music dramas), steals the show, with its comic tale of a bunch of sailors' impassioned but shallow prayer for deliverance from shipwreck. Elsewhere the moods range from pious to bitter-sweet melancholy--and just try to keep your feet still in villancicos such as Rodrigo Martinez. Those familiar, warm Harp Consort textures contribute markedly to the overall richness of sound. --Andrew GreenCustomer Reviews:

The King's Singers work their magic again.......2006-01-28
The other thing I love about the KS is how well they do different styles of music. Their technique on this is superb - the pronounciation, the intonation, all of it is right on the money. Yet they also manage to "take off the viking hat" (as my choral director likes to say when we're switching styles) and do the Beatles without butchering them. It's really quite something to behold.
This CD is a great introduction to the classical side of the KS, and a definite must-have for any current fan. The pieces are beautiful and exciting, they all complement each other wonderfully, and the whole thing is just a joy to hear!

Dowland's lute works are among the most beautiful compositions of the Renaissance period. Because so many of his pieces are wistful and sad, he was known as "the melancholy Dowland," although McFarlane's selection offers a fair number of more cheerful pieces. These performances are extremely stylish, alert and expressive in every moment of the music. Paul O'Dette's Dowland recordings for Harmonia Mundi are also very well played and include all of the composer's music on five discs. For a single-disc introduction to the composer, this Dorian CD is ideal. Dowland fanatics will need O'Dette's series, and perhaps McFarlane's also. Dorian's sound is extremely realistic. --Leslie GerberCustomer Reviews:
Superb single volume collection of John Dowland's lute music.......2005-12-15
Ronn McFarlane's "Lute Music of Dowland" is a wonderful introduction to John Dowland's lute music. His playing is delightful, the digital recording itself captures his lute beautifully, and the CD offers 28 Dowland compositions, a number well known, some not, all performed stylishly in a way that captures your attention from the very beginning, to the end, of the CD.
Dowland's music represents the very peak of Elizabethan lute music in late sixteenth centry England, a period which began with lutenist John Johnson, and whose music spread in popularity across Europe.
There is an unmistakable melancholy quality about Dowland's music, but it also contains numerous memorable pieces, such as Sir John Smith's Almaine, My Lady Hudson's Puffe, The Earl of Essex Galliard, Melancholy Galliard, Queen Elizabeth's Galliard, Lachrimae, The Frog Galliard etc,; some extraordinary passagework, and appeal that very much transcends time.
Ronn McFarlane's Dowland CD on the Dorian label, along with Jakob Lindberg's Dowland CD on BIS, are the two best single CD collections I know of Dowland's lute music, apart from Paul O'Dette's five volume collection of Dowland which the serious or compleat Dowland collector might prefer. (Julian Bream also offers Dowland on his lute recital CDs, but these include other composers.)
Strongly recommended.
