Pleasing but in no wise challenging.......2004-09-20

Without any way wishing to minimise Mozart's achievement, I must admit that these 'divertimenti', written when Mozart was barely 17 years old, do not, for my mind, belong to that large group of his compositions which really demonstrate his genius. Yes, there are some pleasing melodies, some gentle string adagios, some unexpected tempo changes, but all in all this music is 'easy listening', a pleasing, but in no wise challenging kind of 18th century pop music. The three 'Salzburg symphonies' are in three movements each: the first and third are in the fast-slow-fast mould, the second has a long slow movement to begin with, followed by two short faster ones. They are written for strings only, leading Keith Anderson in the liner notes to the conclusion that Mozart may have composed them as symphonies to which wind parts could have been added ad libitum. The 20 minute Divertimento K. 205 has the usual five movements, and the strings, although dominant, are accompanied by two horns.
The Capella Istropolitana, a chamber orchestra, gives a very decent rendering under the direction of Richard Edlinger, although without really being able to make this music sound 'brilliant'. The recorded sound is acceptable; the acoustics of the Slovak Philharmonic Concert Hall are, as ever, a little echo-ey, but in toto this is, at budget price, a welcome disc.

A fundamental treasure!.......2006-01-27

For all those who shared the immense privilege to have seen Sandor Vegh conducting this famed, renowned and historical ensemble in Caracas 1991, it will be extremely hard to forget those two splendid live performances in Teresa Carreno' s Hall.

In spite of his age, Vegh 's inspiration was remarkable and became a true revelation. His charismatic presence illuminated the entire stage, mesmerizing audience and public.

His Mozart was unique. Somehow Vegh recovered the essence of the innocence, in every musical phrase. It was a sort of hypnotic state, where the music seemed to flow organically with delirious lyricism and eloquent expression.

There have been unforgettable conductors and players who found in Mozart a continuous inspiration 's device, enhancing still more, his interpretative features. Thomas Beecham and Andras Schiff, Giulini and Grumiaux, Casals and Barenboim, Kleiber and Haskil estbalished an invisible spiritual bridge between score and public.

This Prague is fabulous, and share honors with the anthological version of Wolfang Sawalich, Christopher Hoogwood and a magnificent performance of Fritz Lehman in the Fifties.

The Jupiter has name and surname: Thomas Beecham and the Royal Philharmonic of 1957, but nevertheless, this can qualify among the Five Top performances ever recorded.

Think about that when tomorrow, around all over the World Mozart be reminded; specially in Salzburg, but I guess all the Concerts programs around the big musical cities. And let's celebrate once more his relevance and grandness, even in the intimacy of your home.

Baroque- Greatest Hits.......2007-01-09

This is my second purchase of the CD - the first one got scratched. I usually have the music on in the background when I am at my computer. I also use it for background music when working with high school mathematics students in schools. I love it.

If you're a serious classical collector, this is a must have. Of course, even if you don't like classical but want to give it a try, this is also for you. The Baroque period was an important time in the development of music. Before Baroque, music carried only one melody or rhythim. With the arrival of the Baroque Guys: Bach, Vivaldi, Handel, music was able to have two rhythms go on at the same time. Without it, modern music would'nt exist. The music you will hear in this cd may be a bit slow but it is still very good. Oh, and may I add that the cover and the cd itself looks really classy, having a shiny jade color that makes it look like it costs a million dollars. The sound quality is very good and rich-sounding. Hey- the "Masterpiece Theatre" theme is here. I've always wanted it. It's track #1 called a "Rondeau" by Mouret. The Hallelujah choir is to be commended and the trumpet concertos, organ music and violin and string pieces are equally impressive. Some of the works are very familiar. In fact, listening to it, I recalled having listened to them before. This is great music to hear while doing assignments or reading. It has the "college" feel to it. I don't know. Maybe because in the movies you hear those trumpet tunes play whenever they show a university . Anyways, it's great.

I recommend the whole Hans Graf/Mozarteum Mozart Symphony cycle.......2005-11-24

I would recommend the whole Hans Graf/Salzburg Mozarteum Orchestra Mozart Symphony cycle to anyone who likes Mozart played by a modern instrument chamber orchestra. The playing is excellent: clean, and neat, yet musical with a perfect sense of proportion and Mozart's style. Of course: this orchestra, from the town where Mozart was born and lived much of his younger years (until he moved to Vienna at age 26) could play his symphonies and other works in their sleep. Hans Graf sets perfect tempos which serve the music well in nearly every movement of every symphony.

I bought this recording as part of the complete Graf cycle, available early in 2005 from an English supplier; Capriccio simply repackaged this, along with 10 other discs in the series and sold them in a budget priced set. Graf sometimes sets fast tempos, as in IV of Symphony 7: one of my favorite early Mozart symphony movements, with a tune that really gets under your skin - but they work! This may raise a few eyebrows, but I like it alot.

Capriccio supplies excellent sound, full and rich, yet not overpowering, and to the service of Mozart's music. The digital sound is never harsh or with a brilliant edge that some digital recordings (especially those made in the 1980s) can have.

Other options? Bohm/Berlin Philharmonic for the complete Mozart Symphonies (DG); Leinsdorf/London Philharmonic (MCA, early stereo in sound inferior to this disc); Pinnock/English Concert (period instruments, DG Archiv); Nicholas Ward/Northern Chamber Orchestra (Naxos). I've heard Marriner/Academy of St. Martin in the fields (Philips), and thought them less interesting than the others mentioned above. For some reason, Marriner seems endless and boring, while Bohm, Pinnock, Ward, and Graf decisively do not. Recommended.
