Album Description

In this recording we have performances of three of Brahms' most highly regarded chamber works. All three were insprired by the artistry of Richard Muhlfeld, the foremost German clarinetist of his day. These late works show Brahms' style at its most mature. Classical forms are used with flexibility and economy to convey a great breadth and depth of feeling. The three artists who perform here have worked together for years and have received critical acclaim in the U.S. and abroad.

An Excellent Performance!.......2005-09-15

This CD is a delight! I was given this recording as a Christmas present and just recently got around to listening to it. Now, I'm kicking myself for not popping it into the CD player months ago!
The music represents some of the composer's most sophisticated and sublime work and this extraordinary ensemble does it justice. Chamber music of this type (and especially Brahms) requires more than just technical virtuosity and demands a very high level of musical insight, taste and sensitivity. Marco, Schween and Hammond transcend mere musical technique and explore the deeper meanings and subtle details that give this music its power and elegance. This recording also has an unusually warm sound and is a must for Brahms aficionados and all fans of great chamber music. Bravo!!

Incredible chamber pieces.......2005-09-04

It is not possible to describe Brahms' late chamber works in words. This CD is outstanding in quality and interpretation. I recommend it highly.

Timeless Brahms classics, richly re-imagined.......2004-08-21

There are scores, perhaps hundreds, of recorded versions of these Brahms pieces, one of the most notable being the Harold Wright/Harris Goldsmith collaboration of 1966. In that company, this brand-new version is, to this listener at least, a revelation, both for its emotional range and for the beauty and clarity of the playing. Ms.Schween and Messrs. Hammond and Marco are superb technicians, but capable also of enormous expression. As a clarinetist, I was particularly taken with the pair of clarinet-piano sonatas, which are presented here with a combination of elegance, intelligence, power and passion that I haven't heard in other versions. I consider this disc a must, and recommend it without reservation.
