4 out of 5 stars Correction to review concerning the versions of the op. 8 trio.......2006-06-10

Christopher Smith is in error in saying that the Borodin Trio's performance of Brahms's B Major Piano Trio, on Chandos CHAN 8334/5, is the original version. The Borodin Trio recorded only the revised version (unless they made a second recording I'm unaware of). So far as I can tell from the Amazon Web listings and old Penguin Guides, the original version has been recorded by the following groups: Odeon Trio, Trio Opus 8, Altenberg Trio, and Parnassus Trio. The last two groups recorded both versions. Apart from listening, one can tell from the movement designations which version one is dealing with. For instance, the first movement was originally allegro con moto and was revised to allegro con brio, and the third movement was changed from adagio non troppo to adagio. Also, I think you will find that the "great chunks" Brahms removed in his revision are from the first and third movements, not the second (scherzo) movement. Incidentally, I would have preferred not to rate this recording, as my purpose is only to make a correction and the Beaux Arts Trio recording I have is another version with a different violinist, but Amazon's system would not let me do so without including a rating, so I have provided a rating that corresponds to the average of the other ratings.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent buy, whether "budget" or not.......2006-02-02

The three trios on the "B" CD especiall show the emotional depth of Brahms later life chamber music. The Clarinet Trio is well rendered with a supple, yet reserved, but not austere, style.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, delightful.......2004-11-04

This set is a treat for any Brahms lover. Excellent performance, elegance, depth and profound understanding. True Brahms !!!

4 out of 5 stars Becoming a favorite.......2000-10-17

After listening to the first movement of the C major I'd agree that it's a shade brisk and perfunctory. I've now listened to this performance of the clarinet trio many times. This is a piece that made no impression on me until I listened repeatedly and studied the score. I now realize that, while it's not a perfectly satisfying masterpiece, it has a subdued, elusive beauty, plus it's a remarkably concise piece. I have a theory that it was written in memory of Schumann. Some reasons: 1) the key of A minor was a favorite of Schumann's, 2) the opening melody for cello resembles the opening theme of Schumann's cello concerto (also in A minor), 3) the climax of the coda of the first movement (bars 194-200) has several Schumannesque descending fifths in the melody, 4) the whole piece has a feeling of sad reminiscence such as one can imagine Brahms would feel late in his own life thinking back on his friend, now dead thirty years. The clarinet trio is played very beautifully with no hint of the perfunctory quality mentioned above in connection with the C major trio. This is great music that deserves to be studied and thought about, not just played in the background.

Addendum (10/2002)...I just want to take back what I said about the C major being perfunctory. I've had many hours of enjoyment from all tracks on these discs, particularly the C major and C minor piano trios and the clarinet trio. That business about "perfunctory" was a very superficial initial reaction. These guys play with fire and sweep...crack open a beer and crank it up!

2 out of 5 stars a real disappointment.......2000-07-19

Although I haven't listened to all of it extensively, I found that both the Opus 8, B Major and Opus 87, C Major, were played with jarring tempo changes, unintuitive and displeasing phrasing, and a seeming lack of interest. I am a huge fan (and player) of Brahms and these trios in particular, and it was astonishing to discover that this compilation's recordings were so lacking in feeling and grace.

5 out of 5 stars forgotten masterpieces.......2007-02-22

I was a little surprised to see so many reviews for this CD, most of them are full of praise. As I, too, am full of praise I can be brief.
First I must confess that, after listening to Mozart for well over 40 years, it is only very recently that I came accross any of the works on these CDs. I heard the last movement of the string trio and went straight to the computer to get it. As last year was Mozart's 250th birthday and we were deluged with his music this is incredble.
The string trio K563 is a late work by a mature Mozart, it is a very fine work, beautifully played by Arthur Grumiaux and friends. The two duos for violin and viola is another great find for me, more superb Mozart. These do not have a bass line, the composition is so good that they don't need one, indeed I was well into them before I noticed that there wasn't one. In all of these works all the instruments are equals, there is lots of work for the viola and the cello too has an important role. The six preludes and fugues again were new to me, but I am getting to know them and love them.
This is another excellent recording of Mozart's chamber music from Philips Duo, and well worth full marks. I recommend it highly, especially for Mozart lovers. If you are not well versed in Mozart I might suggest that you start with his concertos and instrumental works before you buy these Cds.

3 out of 5 stars Eclipsed.......2006-08-04

For me the point here is the K.563, and while I have loved Grumiaux's playing for decades, and this is a nice older [1967] recording, it is completely blown away by the recent recording by Yo Yo Ma, Gidon Kremer, and Kim Kashkashian. On the other hand, the latter recording is defective in that the technicians managed to make the violin sound shrill and harsh -- the usual suspects are of course recording engineers who've spent much of their careers blowing out their high-end hearing listening to and working with "rock and roll" recordings, and thus needing to boost the highs in order to hear them; at the same time, it was miked much too closely. At least the Philips recordings were done in an era when the engineers were older folks who had spent their careers listening to and recording music. My choice: the Ma / Kremer / Kashkashian CD, but with my treble control cranked down....

5 out of 5 stars A style made for Mozart.......2005-08-26

Here is yet another great Mozart Philips recording featuring the elegant playing of Arthur Grumiaux. The String Quintets and Violin Concertos are other ones. When you hear Grumiaux play Mozart like this, you think, "Now, how can one top that?" Such a dignified, galante and poised style as his is perfect for Mozart's music. These two CD's provide a cournacopia of Mozart delights played magnificantly by Arthur Grumiaux and friends: three string duos, the one and only great string trio (K.563) and a rather unique collection of preludes and fugues mostly transcribed from Bach's "Well Tempered Clavier" for violin and viola. Each work also has an interesting story behind it as does most of Mozart's music.

Two of the late duos Mozart wrote were "ghost written" for a terribly ill Michael Haydn - a comtemporary and great friend of Mozart. As history goes, Haydn had promised a series of six duos for the impatient Archbishop Colloredo and was two short. Mozart's continual visiting the ill Haydn and lightening-fast composing of these two duos reveal the compassionate, warm-hearted side of Mozart. In each you can hear both Haydn and Mozart by the various musical mannerisms, but they eventually passed off as Haydn's works just fine.

The trio is a late work (K563/626) that was written in 1788 - the year that Mozart's popularity with the fickle Vieneese dwindled and life strarted to fall apart. But, one would never know this from the skill and stature of the great work. Having a full six movements lasting a full 45 minutes, the string trio is a work of grand scale and rich diversity that does not once become bogged down, repetitive or dull. The equality of the part writing is especially notable as much as is the complex sonorities, intelligent design and lyrical charm. It ranks right up there with his quintets as Mozart's most accomplished chamber works.

Perhaps the surprize delight of the set are the six preludes and fugues, most of which are transcribed from JS Bach (and one each from JC Bach and Mozart). It is said that Mozart's wife Constanze adored the fugues of Bach and Handel upon first hearing them in 1782 and supposedly begged her husband to compose such music - which apparently he obliged with these works here. Of course they sound like Bach as they mostly are Bach. The Grumiaux Trio makes them sound glorious from their rich and nuanced playing and the fine Philip's sound quality. Overall, a rich, rewarding listening experience.

If you are new to Mozart's chamber music, these Philips DUO sets are excellent CD's to collect. The most recommended Philips Mozart CD's are: The Great Piano Concertos Vol I, II, the Violin Concertos, Great Quintets Vol. I and II, the Piano Trios and String Trios/Duos here. Then, the Great Seranades, the six 'Haydn' String Quartets, the two Piano Quartets and Great Violin Sonatas Vol. I, II are also fine music.

5 out of 5 stars A nice pair.......2005-06-22

Not much to add here: 1st CD: The string trio K. 563 is a peer to Mozart's greatest quartets and quintets. Period! The string duos K. 423 and 424 are simple in sound, but rich in texture; the simplicity of means calls for advanced composing and Mozart doesn't dissappoint. 2nd CD: The trio K. 266 is less interesting, but the six preludes and fugues are really great, fusions of Mozart and Bach. All the playing is excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Nobody like Artur Grumiaux for Mozart violin music!.......2004-07-19

Joseph Szigetti gave a towering surprise with the ten violin sonatas , but Grumiaux was a real fighter for this Mozart music so plenty of lyricism.

The vibrato and musicality given for Grumiaux is out of this world. His playing is kindness enjoyable extremely cantabile and above all deeply idomatic , loaded with majesty and charm and intimacy.

This belgium violinist was a pupil of Georges Enesco . Pleas acquire also the trio Kv 563 . I've never a recording that rivalizes with that.
Certainly Grumiaux was a champion master in this field!

If you take a look around about the most remarkable string Trios, you will find out that these are not so many. Before that immense Mozart's Divertimento in E flat Kv. 563, written in 1788, we just find a dozen of Trios by Bocherini and after, Beethoven Piano Trios, Schubert, Tchaikovsky, Brahms. Dvorak Dohnayi, Webern, Roussel and Schoenberg. In this sense and taking into account the brief set it's obvious to state we are in presence of the most significant, pyramidal and complete string Trio ever written, not only because it was a true milestone in what concerns to structural complexity, lyrical density and enjoyable mood.

Surprisingly, it does not use to appear among the most extraordinary musical achievements ion the enormous musical legacy of the beloved son of Salzburg. But measure by measure, I wouldn't hesitate just for a second in what respects to include it among the ten best works of Mozart throughout his opulent and extraordinary production.

And particularly this version possesses that touch of genius and dazzling luminosity, filled of kind spirits, cheerful energy and rhythmic vitality.

This masterpiece by itself justifies plainly your inversion in this double CD, but additionally you will find out another treasures of highest level as both Duos for violin and viola, The Kv. 266 The six preludes and fugues for violin, viola and cello written as a profound and heartfelt homage in Bach's memory are astonishing and notable compositions by themselves.

So I think not to sin of exaggerate when I recommend you this extraordinary set, one of my most beloved albums of my personal collection and wishing for you to have. You will agree with me once you have acquired and enjoyed over and over.

It's almost useless to talk about the purity of spirit of Artur Grumiaux, one of the most distinguished, refined and honest violinists ever born as well as one of the maxim exponents of Mozart's repertoire for violin, and I don't think to sound exaggerate to affirm this record was one of his highest artistic peaks as musician.

Beethoven was the last great composer to write string trios, and his are the finest works of their type. Mozart hardly touched this particular combination, and Haydn wrote quite few very early works which are now completely unknown. In any case, Haydn used two violins and a cello, whereas with Beethoven the standard combination became violin, viola, and cello. These are all early works, expert examples of all that Beethoven learned from Haydn and Mozart in preparation for the writing of his first great string quartets. But far from being mere composition exercises, these are highly rewarding works on their own, and these outstanding performances make the best possible case for their claim to be ranked among Beethoven's chamber music masterpieces. --David Hurwitz

5 out of 5 stars Great Playing from the Grumiaux Trio.......2007-05-01

This is another great recording from the late 1960s re-released on the Philips Duo label at bargain price, they provide an excellent source of the chamber music of Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert. The string trio has been a much neglected music form, the only ones of note from this period have been the great Divertimento K563 by Mozart, these 5 from the young Beethoven, and one from Schubert. And they are all fine compositions, very well worth a listen. These from a 20 year old Beethoven are lyrical and joyfull. Despite the age of the recording the sound is very acceptable, and the performance from the Grumiaux Trio is superb.
As this recording is about 40 years old it must be expected that there are better performances available, but I would suggest that you don't worry about that, this one is very very good, and very cheap. Without hesitation, 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Glorious! Beethoven .......2005-03-30

If you were to ask any composer from Mozart to the present, the task they would be most reluctant to tackle would be to write a trio for three stringed instruments.

The string quartet has long been considered to be the 'rite of passage'--the medium in which a composer proves he (or she) has 'chops'--the complete mastery of technique (harmony, counterpoint, voice-leading, etc.)--to write successfully for any combination of instruments .

But the string trio presents a unique challenge. With only three instruments (and six pitches available at any time), one must create a complete sonic universe with all the richness and diversity that will keep a listener entranced from beginning to end of a 20-minute piece. Beethoven evidently was inspired by this challenge and created five early masterpieces for this ensemble that have never been surpassed in their imagination and superb craftsmanship. They are among the best things he ever wrote.

It is an intellectual and sensual pleasure to hear Grumiaux lead his colleagues through these rich musical landscapes. I've always loved his elegant, musical playing (I'm a violinist) and consider him to be the ideal interpreter for this repertoire. His colleagues in the trio are 'molto simpatico' and the ensemble and phrasing are impeccable. Janzer (viola) and Czako (cello) don't quite match Gruimiaux's buttery, seamless sound in their solos, but the overall feeling is one of committed, intense music-making that results in performances that set a bench-mark for future ensembles.

4 out of 5 stars Grumiaux Trio will make you smile........2000-01-25

I have first met withe Grumiaux Trio when I randomly bught vol.12 of Philips' "the best of the complete mozart edition". Now that I kenw I like their playing, I bought "Beethoven: The Complete String Trios". This is a digitally remastered recording from 1967/68. While the sound is not as sharp as in a digital recording, it is remarkably clear and noise free, thus anabeling an enjoyable listening. As for the preformance: The Grumiaux Trio play with happy spirit and joy, making these early beethoven works idial music for the early hours of the day (allthough I admit I'v missed a few sleeping hours, for once I start listening to these CDs I can't stop, no mater how late it gets:) It was noted that some times Arthur Grumiaux's violin, shades the other members of the trio. Great chamber music should be a dialog between equals, even if the violin is the leader. Still this is a wanderfull set of CD's, that i can only recomand.

For the record, Florestan is the principal tenor character in Beethoven's heroic opera, Fidelio. He then became one of Schumann's literary alter egos as a music critic, so that's where this excellent group of British musicians gets its name. And since Schumann and Brahms were very close friends, this particular trio ought to be first rate in Brahms's music, right? As luck would have it, they are! Brahms's trios for various combinations of instruments really brought out the best in him. They have all of his typical strictness of form and construction, allied to a particularly generous fund of melody. There isn't a dud in the lot, so if you're interested in any of these pieces, why not get them all? --David Hurwitz

      5 out of 5 stars ROMANTIC GUITAR (de)FOSSILS UNEARTHED!!!.......2000-11-17

De Fossa (1775-1849), interestingly enough, wasn't a full-time composer. (Egad! Shades of Borodin!) Not even a half-time one. Nope. He led a military career--- and very little else, if anything, is actually known about his musical proclivities, except that he thought the pay too nominal to choose the field as his lifetimes occupation.

Lucky for us, though, that he continued independently to write works for guitar ensemble. And it's obvious he enjoyed composing for his own pleasure, not hemmed in by financial constraints, nor stressed by publishers' deadlines. And probably why these guitar "concertants" are so agreeably disposed.

It's easy to be enchanted by the casual grace, beauty and wit de Fossa offers up in his Op. 18. Very easy. Most interesting, as well, is de Fossa's reluctance to "showcase" the guitar (as many of his contemporaries were inclined to do, e.g. Boccherini) in favor of incorporating it equally alongside violin and cello. This approach is most appealing and allows de Fossa's inventiveness full rein--- and, at the same time, increases our enjoyment tenfold. These compositions are not your "generic" chamber works for guitar, and hardly routine.

With de Fossa there's always something harmonious, melodious, infectious or unexpected to tantalize and to entertain us. The three instruments talk to each other. Allegros are contagiously delicious; adagios and romances, piquant; minuettos, effervescent and tangy; finales, rhythmic and sophisticated.

In addition, since guitarist Wynberg and his colleagues are superb; the sound exemplary; the disc length more than generous, and the cost of the CD ever-so-right, de Fossa's Op. 18 is a joy. You will hardly be disappointed.
