5 out of 5 stars Now I know why they make jokes about Hoboken (see below).......2005-10-27

Man, it's discouraging to see people piddling all over music like this. 1950-65 was a great era for American culture; sure the European influence was lingering but American composers (and artists and filmmakers) were finding a voice, an expression of some quality uniquely American that had never appeared before. American music could be something other than Hoe-Downs, Charlestons, and Nearer my God to Thee (sorry, Charles, and you know I love you anyway). This was a taut and crisp intellectual America that was finally gaining ascendancy, something new to the world, brilliant and beautiful. I think of a wonderful photo of Elliott Carter with Stravinsky in New York at some gallery or concert hall circa 1960 or so. Stravinsky looks old and seedy, like a Russian refugee even though he had years to ditch that; Carter, alert and in a sharp suit, looks like the future-on-the-half-shell. It all got blown out of the water by 60s and 70s-era lack of standards and discrimination and an unwillingness to TRY. Sixties-era, anti-culture crapola that still reigns supreme. To much pot. Hippies ruined everything.

What's startling about the bad review is these quartets are hardly over-intellectualized. In fact most are quite beautiful or evocative; the Cage stunningly so. The LPs this collection came off were among my favorites of that era and I doubt a better or more nightmarish Black Angels has ever been done despite recent attempts by Kronos and others. Amazing playing by committed performers. A deal and a bargain.

For ten bucks this is like gold for free. Have at it!

5 out of 5 stars Many Undiscovered Treasures.......2003-01-08

It's almost laughable not to pick up this disc. The price alone makes the set worth it. Added to that the fact that many of these works are not available in other forms and this disc is a no-brainer for fans of the late 20th century string quartet. The sampling transcends styles, from the almost improvisatory sonic canvas of Earle Brown, to the surprisingly beautiful almost minimal quartet of Cage, the horrific depiction of war in Crumb's justly famous Black Angels, or the almost traditional sounding Schonbergisms of Stepan Wolpe, this is an eclectic collection and well worth the modest investment.

I won't review everything on the album, as there is just too much. Highlights for me include the Earle Brown quartet, which is one of Brown's strongest early works. Since Brown is poorly represented on CD, every release of his is worth having, but the Second Quartet is a masterwork of tonal subtlety. Cage's Quartet was written just before he moved into his more aleatoric phase. It is highly modal and almost a precusor to minimlism, a very pleasing work that should be more widely known. Christian Wolff is also a composer who is underrepresented on CD (though Mode is quickly redressing the imbalance.) Summer is also a protominimalist work, based on stark 5ths. The reading of Black Angels is good, though not anything to supplant the Kronos reading, which is still my favorite. Also interesting are Quartets by Wolpe and Leon Kirchner.

So if you have any interest in American string work of the late 20th century, you need this disc. It is indispensible and very beautifully played. And the Vox Box price is unbeatable.

5 out of 5 stars compendium of the richness of American innovation.......2000-04-05

This is a great showcase of the American string quartet, innovation, vision, iconoclasm, all elements which we often overlook and forget easily. But only Elliot Carter is missing, and that's because he has what! Five Quartets now.Inclusion of the First Carter would have rounded things out. The Earle Brown here is a neglected masterwork. Based on graphic notation the performers don't improvise so much as are given entrance freedoms within a prescribed range. The affect can be mysterious, haunting, also innovative with a wide pallette of extended techniques, at the bridge, sul ponticello, plucking. We often forget the traditional beauty Cage engaged the early part of his career, the Forties. This Quartet is a fine consummate example of that, with soft, gentle lines, very sparce, and transparent, also he limits himself to a few tones, tossed around the various voices. Structures by Feldman is an early work here, the Quartet is treated as one monolith sound, indistinguishable voices playing harmonics, cello playing where the violin plays, same range. All of Feldman's floating gentleness is here as well, perhaps too much at times, like it overspends its welcome. Crumb's Black Angels is another classic, The Kronos has takened this around the block many times, Crumb always works well with a programmatic agenda in place, and here he transforms the Quartets introspective consititution to more a drammatic focus. Druckman as well also works well with a program but here there is none. He has a fine imagination for sonoric structures, balance, but its doesn't seem to amount to much. The Wolpe is one of his best works. His creativity was uneven, here the violence and charged motives he is found of are in place to jump, and reiterate, toss around in an environment of high energy. Wolff's Summer is an early work prior to his metamorphosis into utilization of political imagery by comparison, this is a beautiful work, but cold, Wolff also needs a program, which he profoundly found, He has alater Quartet he wrote in the Eighties that is more compelling.

3 out of 5 stars An interesting sampling of a musical dead end........1999-06-18

Superb analog transfers and excellent playing, I suppose. (I mean, how can you tell with music like this?) OK, I'm not a fan of this kind of music, but at this price I thought the collection was worth chancing. So far, I've found that the best way to listen to this recording is to let the music wash over you while you enjoy the sheer variety of sounds that the composers and players create. And there are some pleasant surprises, particularly the Cage quartet (from 1950) which contains genuine emotion and ends with a brief movement chock full of--gasp!--sprightly tunes. Makes me wonder what might have been had these composers shown more interest in music and less interest in mathematical gymnastics designed to impress their colleagues at the academy. At any rate, I recommend this album as an interesting sonic experience and a good sampling of the dead-end serialist/avant-garde genre that is now being supplanted by a return to music that recognizes tonality. (If you really want great 20th century quartets, incidentally, buy the 6 by Bartok).

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Collection.......1999-03-24

This set is a must if you have the slightest interest in avant-garde music from the 50s and 60s. Not a single weak piece, excellent sound and performances, and the price can't be beat!

If you like Bolcom's piano works, this CD is for you. Really an astonishing performance!!

5 out of 5 stars One of the 20th century's great set of piano etudes........1999-12-24

The Bolcom 12 New Etudes are wild wonderful pieces. They should be considered one of the great sets of piano etudes written in the 20th century along with those by Rachmaninoff, Scriabin, and Debussy. Hamelin was the composer's new inspiration after the project was shelved following the death of the original dedicatee, Paul Jacobs, who died in 1983. Hamelin does incredible things with these pieces. He understands them fully, and overcomes their cruel and unusual demands with astonishing ease. In literature that is unusual, rarely played, and exceptionally difficult, Hamelin has no equal. The Wolpe piece didn't do much for me (though I respect Hamelin's advocacy of it), but the Bolcom Etudes take up most of the playing time and are easily worth the price of the disc.

5 out of 5 stars Hamelin always mesmerizes and excites.......1999-04-08

Hamelin likes to scour the countryside looking for piano music no one else would touch. It could be because of marketability or lack of understanding. So,if you have followed his recordings you've seen all the neglected piano geniuses he has presented, as the post-romantic Russian Medtner, or the Berlioz contemporary Alkan(a recluse). And here with Wolpe, we have a creativity hardly known. Well Wolpe was inconsistent without a focused agenda, and his piano music, there is( for my money) only the "Passacgaglia" and this work. I had hoped he would have performed the "Passacaglia" which is more problematic. Hamelin, whatever he touches turns into a high dramatic affair. His consummate technique always allows him to run past ahead of the music. And here in the Wolpe, the piano is shattered, full of abandonement yet always controlled. Bolcom is not so neglected, an eclectic by comparison and temperment who has made the popular strains of expression work for him while maintaining some semblance of intellectual manipulation. The trick is to keep both within the pit of play. These Etudes do just that and are nice and easy listening yet engage a structural musical imagination, bound by texture and register. Like good etudes they say what needs to be said and are off onto another excursion.

4 out of 5 stars Fresh and Lyrical.......2007-03-12

In any discussion of 20th-century music, certain names--Stravinsky, Schoenberg, Britten, etc--crowd to the front of the room. But a more thorough examination of the era reveals many more fine composers. Stefan Wolpe is among those, and his reputation has grown over the decades since his death. This CD presents music composed in the first decade of Wolpe's time in America. "The Man From Midian" is a ballet, scored for two pianos, on the subject of Moses.

Ballet scores can be problematic, restricted as they are by the need for short tableaux. In the case of some composers--Tchaikovsky and Prokofiev come to mind--scores never escape those restrictions. They're always "ballet music". Wolpe instead found an opportunity. The score plays as an integrated suite, exploring various scales and formal mechanisms. It's more innovative than a first hearing would indicate, and nicely explores the sonorities available from two pianos. Of course, if one prefers to listen to music programmatically, the story is ready-made. Some of the processional music reminds me slightly of Britten's "Burning Fiery Furnace", which came much later.

The "Sonata for Violin and Piano" doesn't really break any new ground, but it's still a well-made piece in a unique voice. It's quite vigorous and dramatic. Although Wolpe was born in Germany, the Sonata doesn't sound particularly German, or American, or any other particular nationality. Wolpe has successfully breathed in the musical air from all around. It's a nice piece.

The peformance comes from the Group for Contemporary Music--not so much a specific assemblage of performers as a sort of clearing house for first-rate musicians. The readings are excellent, and the recording--while a bit reverberant--is excellent. Thanks again to Naxos for giving these excellent readings a second life.

        5 out of 5 stars Astonishing.......2002-05-12

This is hands down one of the best trumpet recital CD's out there. Mr. Mase's playing is outstanding. He has a beautiful sound and amazing articulation. What really makes this CD outstanding his Mr. Mase's overriding musicianship. I especially liked the opening piece "The Avatar" the first mvt. Features Mr. Mase on piccolo trumpet, and the second and third continue on with flugel horn and trumpet, respectively. The piece is very interesting with lots of contrast and melody. I especially like the first two mvts.
The Kent Kennan sonata recorded here is in my mine the definitive recording of this work (at the very least the definitive revised version).
This is a must buy for any trumpet student. For any person interested in modern brass music this is a definite recommendation.

4 out of 5 stars Carter in Europe.......2006-06-28

Though Elliott Carter's music has often found greater acceptance within modernism-friendly Europe rather than at home, many of his most distinguished interpreters (particularly on record) have been American musicians. By contrast, this disc has a distinctly European flavour, with members of the Dutch group Nieuw Ensemble playing ten works, including one dedicated to them.

The two most weighty works on the disc are Luimen and Trilogy. Luimen (roughly meaning 'whimsical moods') is a sextet for the unusual combination of mandolin, guitar, harp, vibraphone, trumpet and trombone, and was written for the performers on this disc. It's a delightful piece, written with a very light touch as it swings from one mood to another. There is a previous recording by Speculum Musicae, which I slightly prefer due to its greater intensity, but the more relaxed feel of this reading suits the music very well too.

Trilogy, for oboe and harp, was written for Heinz and Ursula Holliger. As the title would suggest, it's in three movements: Bariolage for solo harp, Inner Song (an elegy for Stephan Wolpe) for solo oboe, and Immer Neu for both instruments. As with Luimen, it's amongst the most charming of Carter's later works, the harp part full of unusual sounds and techniques, the oboe solo a beautiful lament, and the finale a witty, conversational dialogue. As the Holligers' performance is no longer available, this reading will do very nicely as a replacement (even if it doesn't supersede the original).

The rest of the pieces on the disc are rather slighter. Scrivo in vento is a flute solo which alternates slow, lyrical music in the lower range of the instrument with shrieks and cries at the top of its range, while Con leggerezza pensosa, for clarinet, violin and cello, pays homage to Italo Calvino's writings with rapidly shifting moods. Changes is a delightful solo guitar work that never stays in the same mood for more than a few moments, while Esprit rude, esprit doux II, for flute, clarinet and marimba, celebrates Pierre Boulez's 80th birthday and the two sides of his personality--generous and irascible.

Gra, a homage to Witold Lutoslawski, is a vivacious solo clarinet piece (practically a repertory work now, too), while the charming Enchanted Preludes is a witty dialogue between flute and cello with a joyous close. 90+ celebrates the 90th birthday of Goffredo Petrassi with 90 bars of contrasting pianistic styles...then refuses to quit, while the not-as-austere-as-you'd-expect Canon for 4 is a hommage to BBC radio controller Sir William Glock, for the typically Carterian combination of flute, bass clarinet, violin and cello.

This isn't an absolutely essential Carter disc--unless you don't have another recording of Trilogy--but it's hard to see any lovers of this composer's music being disappointed by it. I know I enjoyed it.

          Album Description

This new release celebrates the explosively visceral sound world of Stefan Wolpe (1902-1972). Regarded by specialists as among the elite of mid-century modernists, Wolpe's compositions of the 50's and 60's can be heard as developing in sound many of the ideas championed on canvas by New York's Abstract Expressionists.

This disc includes the premiere recordings of two late Wolpe scores - Quintet with Voice (1957) and Piece in 3 Parts for Piano and 16 Instruments (1961); as well as Wolpe's early Suite im Hexachord (1936.

Performed by Peter Serkin, Oliver Knussen, Jan Opalach, The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and Speculum Musicae.
