2 out of 5 stars It's like listening to a catfight!.......2005-12-31

Ugh! I'm a big fan of Medieval music, but this has got to be some of the worst singing I've heard on such a CD. I'm guessing the lady was thinking of how, with modern rock music, often the singers will wander from the original melody and rythm a bit. But I stress here A BIT -- that doesn't mean these should be turned into pseudo-rap, or bad poetry. She totally just starts SCREAMING certain songs -- trying maybe to communicate the emotion?
Also (and I noticed in the liner notes that the group often does Middle Easter music) there was a sort of unpleasant Turkish/Indian style to the improv that I didn't like.
My final complaint is that it is a woman singing all these songs -- these songs were meant for men to sing. I don't think the lyrics were even altered to match.

1 out of 5 stars pseudo-"medieval" jollity and little else.......2005-05-07

I'd be the first to admit that this recording of 12th and 13th century troubadour and trouvere songs is probably not aimed at listeners like myself. Yet whilst it would be difficult to deny the enthusiasm and aplomb with which these kitschy and Clemencic-inspired interpretations are delivered - with a kaleidoscopic array of instruments, including some [apparently indispensable] arabic ones - let's not overlook one VERY crucial point here: this recording does NOT EVEN ATTEMPT to present a faithful portrayal of this repertoire. In fact, it flies in the face of ALL recent musicology (see literature by Christopher Page, Elizabeth Aubrey etc...) which leaves little doubt that these songs were performed in one of only two ways: either one unaccompanied singer, or one singer accompanied by one (or two) instrument(s) - principally harp or vielle (although one wind instrument was sometimes used in lower style genres, like the dansa or pastourelle/pastorela). Additionally (!), only certain songs [Low Style - like track 2] were probably sung in a metric fashion, whereas High Style Chansons seem to have been rather more rhapsodic in delivery from start to finish, in complete contrast to how they are presented here [tracks 1, 3, 5, 7, 11, 12]...

But perhaps the performers (and listeners) don't believe this is relevant, or don't even care - after all, it's certainly rather "merrie". Just make sure you realise it's about as "medieval" as Terry Gilliam & Terry Jones's 'Monty Python and the Holy Grail', or John Milius's 1981 film 'Conan the Barbarian' [starring Arnold Schwarzennegger].

Incidentally, if you're interested in hearing some academically and aesthetically more convincing recordings of this repertory, then the following are recommended:

1. 'Dante and the Troubadours', Sequentia/Bagby [DHM 05472 77 227 2]
2. 'Le fou sur le pont' - Bernatz de Vendadorn, Camerata Mediterranea/Cohen [Erato 4509-94B25-2]
3. 'The Spirits of England and France 2 - Songs of the Trouveres', Gothic Voices/Page [Hyperion CDA66773]

5 out of 5 stars Simply outstanding.......2005-05-03

By far the best medieval music album in Naxos. This truly is a delight for senses. What I most enjoy is its wonderful attempt to recreate what a troubadour ambiance would have looked like: Maria Laffite's voice is unvaluable in that respect. Smart choice of songs and a particularly well-directed consort. It seems to me that the first feature that a troubadour album must offer, is for its scope to border on the literary value of the songs. "Music of the Troubadour" truly is a wonderful blend of medieval literature and music.

5 out of 5 stars I TROVATORI.......2004-10-22

Absolutely fascinating, and it goes without saying not much like Verdi. This is an illuminating selection of the music of the troubadours, part vocal part instrumental, dating from the 12th to the 14th centuries. The artists are two groups of specialists, representing it seems slightly different traditions in the performance of the music, but with previous experience of collaborating. Particular care was apparently given to the selection of the vocalist, the final choice being Maria Lafitte of Canso Catalana, a specialist not only in the music of the period but also in the mediaeval romance languages - Provencal and some near congeners - of the poetry we find here.

The performances have a great deal of `presence' and what sounds to me like an air of authority. Maria Lafitte puts her heart and soul into all her contributions, and it should be taken as a compliment when I say that for me there was an odd suggestion of Piaf about her. With one exception, the mildly risqué # 9, all the vocal work is solo work. In # 9 I have to suppose the instrumentalists double as the choristers, since no other credits are given. The instrumental music (comprising about half of the disc) has not advanced at this stage beyond rudimentary harmony consisting of drone basses and percussion effects, but it is strikingly well recorded, particularly as regards parts of the percussion, and the liner note details the precise instruments used. What I would have liked to find in the note is rather more about the choice of instruments - is it specified in the scores or, as I suspect, did the specialist performers prescribe it themselves? As regards the vocal side, the liner note is completely admirable, pitching to an audience of newcomers to this music and packing in a lot of the historical background in a short space. There is also a brief section on the performers, the commentary is given in German and French as well as English, and there is a full text of the poems with English translation.

5 out of 5 stars Oh wondrous Spanish early music!.......2003-09-04

This album is quite possibly my favorite of all that have been put forth by the Ensemble Unicorn. As always, they perform tight, with lots of wonderful improvisation, and the recording itself is excellent. Add in some very WONDERFUL Asturian vocals, and you've got the music that wound up being rewritten into the famed Cantigas de Santa Maria.

This record will transport you into a different world of sound and spirit: simpler, purer, more tranquil and serene. The program consists of chants from the 12th to the 15th centuries and includes several Sephardic songs--some quite dancelike, some rather mournful. Though the melodic range of the chants is naturally very limited, and the prevailing mood is devotional and somber, they have a lot of textural diversity. Some are purely instrumental, others are for one or two unaccompanied voices. When the tenor and bass sing alone, the latter provides a drone to the former's more florid line, or they move in open intervals, alternating between unison and solo. Their duets with the soprano combine unison, conversational give and take, and counterpoint. Most of the chants use a wide variety of vocal and instrumental combinations, with fascinating results. The final song employs the entire group; vigorous, assertive, and celebratory, it keeps adding voices and instruments, becoming increasingly elaborate.

The performing group is most admirable. Several singers also play numerous instruments, which include a citole, a cornemuse, a hackbrett simulating a psalterion, a Persian def, and a Syrian rek, in addition to the more familiar vieles and a large variety of flutes and percussion. Among the singers, tenor Hervé Lamy is outstanding. His voice is sweet and velvety, his expressiveness both chaste and intense.

The disc's packaging is odd. The booklet gives neither the texts nor any information about the music or the performers. But both the makers of the instruments, which are, of course, modern reproductions of the ancient originals, and the dates when they were made are listed in meticulous detail. --Edith Eisler

5 out of 5 stars Music to Dream To.......2000-07-11

I was curious to hear what the marvellous Medieval ensemble 'La Nef' made of Cathar music, remembering that there exists absolutely no record of Cathar music and we have no idea if they actually LISTENED to any. La Nef have been as clever as they have imaginative; aknowleding the fact that we know nothing about Cathar taste in music, they reasoned that the Cathar dislike of the Orthodox Church would push their musical tendancies strictly into the realms of the secular, La Nef have taken well-known Medieval folk-melodies from the South of France and attempted (successfully) to imbue them with a 'dualistic' theme, echoing the tenets of Catharism. The 'Good and Evil' concept at the heart of Catharism becomes, musically, a contrast between heavy percussion and harps so light they could be carried on an angel's wings, the haunting, almost Arabic melodies of some of the tracks a very strange mixture of East and West. This CD truly is a 'tour de force' in imagination and wit, and I wholeheartedly recommend it to both Medieval music afficianados as well as people who just want music to DREAM to!

    5 out of 5 stars Fantastic! a religious experience.......1999-07-05

We saw La Nef perform this concert live, and were blown away. The group may well take liberties with the 'authentic' performances, but lustily capture the colour, spirit and pathos of the Cathar story, about which I have read several accounts. The CD even prompted a trip to Montsegur

    5 out of 5 stars SUBLIME.......1999-04-13

Ever since I first heard La Nef (a Canadian early music ensemble) (and swept up all three of their recordings) I have been wondering how I could share this experience with others. I first stumbled across "The Garden of Earthly Delights," and from the first moments after putting it on, I knew that here was a group of people that did not just recreate early music, but breathed life into it and presented it with dimension, depth and sensitivity. I am utterly haunted by the harmonies and vocal interpretations on these discs. I consider the track "Reis Glorios" from "Montsegur" as simply one of the most moving songs that I have ever heard. Each of these discs simply sparkles; carrying for me a mixture of underlying sadness, joy and the mysterious. These are expert tapestries that delight and provoke.

This recording first turned me on to early european music when it was released. If you are at all interested in this type of music or even just curious it is money well spent.

5 out of 5 stars Fun, entertaining, and wonderful.......2005-09-27

This is another stellar production by Erato, of the Camerata Mediterranea, under the direction of Joel Cohen. In my collection, I treat this disc as a companion piece to the collection 'The Sacred Bridge' by the Boston Camerata, which has sacred music from the Jewish and Christian traditions in the Middle Ages. This disc concentrates on secular music of the age of the minstrels and troubadours. Much is anonymous, both in lyric writing and musical composition. Indeed, according to Cohen, 'virtually all the minstrels' instrumental music of the troubadour period has been lost, and was perhaps never written down.' Musicians and musicologists have to rely on the folk tunes and later compositions known to incorporate themes to reconstruct as best they can the music from this period.

The performances of troubadours was sometimes a capella, but more often accompanied by plucked string sounds such as harp and viola. Cohen argues that the wind and percussion instruments of many recordings are less likely to be authentic. These are story/text driven songs.

One of the interesting aspects of authentic troubadour music is that performers were recruited not on the basis of music merit, but rather on connection with Occitan/Provencal as a primary consideration. For this recording, Anne Azema, Francois Harismendy, and Jean-Luc Madier have living Occitan connections. Joel Cohen, Cheryl Ann Fulton and Shira Kammen round out the players.

The songs (chansons) are divided into six main story lines, with improvised musical interludes. Troubadours told stories with their songs, and this disc is no different.

The performances are wonderful, lively, fun and full of energy. One can imagine being in a medieval chamber being entertained.

El Sabio, the laudatory name for King Alfonso X of Castile and Leon, means "the learned," and among this legendary 13th-century king's accomplishments was the gathering, editing, copying, and illustration of a collection of songs known as the Cantigas de Santa Maria. This outstanding recording features 18 of the original collection's more than 400 songs--an enticing sampling that only begins to suggest the music's enormous variety and inventiveness. Although most of the songs center on praise and reverence for the Virgin Mary, there also are religious feast songs, stories about Marian miracles, penitential prayers, and occasionally, songs of erotic love and romantic longing. Unlike liturgical chant, these songs are often highly rhythmic, with dancing, shifting accents according to the stresses of the text. Some songs are charged with atmosphere, created by stark harmonies and accompanying drones. Sequentia's brilliant, energetic performances clearly convey the flesh-and-blood lives that inspired these songs and make them still exciting 700 years later. --David Vernier

Thanks to the Martin Best Medieval Ensemble, we have a series of excellent recordings that give a generous flavor of the music and era of the troubadours, whose influence on poetry and song was substantial, and whose commentaries on customs and mores of the 13th century are invaluable references for understanding certain aspects of medieval life. Guirart Riquier, whose music and poetry this recording celebrates, was "the last known exemplar of the long tradition of sung poetry that began in southwest France at the end of the 11th century." There's some surprising stuff here--exciting in its rhythmic energy and persuasive in its plaintive emotion. Ingenious arrangements and skillful musicianship are largely responsible for the excitement--and the lyrical tenor voice of Martin Best creates just the right atmosphere. --David Vernier

I wasn't sure what to expect with this cd, although I was very curious to learn more about troubadour music. The fine singing (by both male and female voices) is accompanied by spare but sensitive arrangements of oriental lute, harp, and fiddle, and interspersed with a spoken account of Ventadorn's life (in the old Provencal dialect). The result is an ethereal presentation that transports the listener to a strange new world -- one that I frequently find myself wanting to go back to. This is a wonderful recording for anyone who likes to explore ancient or exotic music.

This CD is brilliant. I enjoy it very much. It describes the Bernatz de Ventadorn's life (ca 1147-1170). He was a legendary troubadour. In this CD, someone can hear his love songs and the spoken description of his love for Eleanor of Aquitania. I highlight the quality of this sensitive work, executed by Camerata Mediterranea, and two songs: Non es meravelha seu chan and Can vei la lauzeta mover.

These songs are perfect with Russell's full, robust voice and a single instrument accompaniment. Perfect for the medieval secular song! However, Russell tends to slow down too much during the last stanzas, which stretches the song out of its natural rhythm. But I still love this disc and the poetic quality is superb! Buy this one!
