5 out of 5 stars New Compilation By Brahms' Best Interpreter.......2006-01-22

Wow, I have the honor of breaking in the review line on this 3-CD set! Here we have Radu Lupu's entire recorded output of Brahms' piano music, all from 1971-81. CD 1 (like CD 2) was previously released as a single CD, so be sure you're not duplicating your collection. CD 3 is a previously out-of-print recording of Concerto Nr. 1 with the London PO conducted by Edo de Waart. I'll address this first. I had never heard Lupu's concerto, and, as an unremitting Lupu fan, I had high hopes. He plays the socks off the thing as I envisioned. However, de Waart and the London PO aren't quite up to Lupu's standards, and a tug-of-war at times threatens the proceeedings. It seems Lupu wants to push ahead in tutti passages, then wants to luxuriate in solo moments--perfectly Brahmsian, I think, if de Waart would only allow him. Also the strings just play with sloppy intonation and execution. One wishes for Jochum's Berlin Phil. to come to Lupu's aid here! Having said that, I will likely keep this right up there with my Gilels version, if only to hear again and again Mr. Lupu's poetry and passion.
As for the other 2 discs (CD1: Sonata Nr.3, Theme and Var. in d minor; CD2: 2 Rhapsodies Op.79, 3 Intermezzos Op.117, 6 Piano Pieces Op.118, 4 Piano Pieces Op.119), I rate his playing to be the best I've heard of these works. If you think he's got the more wistful, roaming Brahms down, you may be surprised to hear his Op. 5 Sonata, where his architecture rivals Richter. I think Lupu just GETS Brahms, more so than anyone else. I feel the same way about Brendel and Schubert.
This 3-CD set makes a wonderful intro to Brahms piano music; if you only wish to own one, this would be a terrific choice!

3 out of 5 stars The "Clinker" of the bunch.......2006-12-19

Having collected the entire "The Masterworks" series (including the Bach and Mozart Complete Works) this set is the 'clinker' of the bunch. First off... 6 CD's of Lieder 'historic' (pre-historic) recordings. No Overtures, No Orchestral Seranades, No Haydn Variations?? The performances of the Symphonies and the Concertos are shakey and not very well recorded. Brilliant Classics, who has done such a wonderful job with the Hadyn Complete Symphonies (licensed from Nimbus), the Mozart and Bach Complete sets, has stumbled a bit with this release.

In his Bartók recordings, Boulez concentrates on the lyrical and intellectual aspects of the music. Shaham goes along with him very well, and they produce some exquisitely beautiful moments, along with extremely clear renderings of the orchestration. But the peasant earthiness so much a part of Bartók's musical makeup is largely absent from these performances, and when Boulez tries to whip up a rousing climax, the result sounds unconvincing. The late Sir Yehudi Menuhin brings out more aspects of this music, with the composer's student Antal Dorati conducting, as does Isaac Stern. This disc is mostly for those who find Bartók too noisy. --Leslie Gerber

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars lovely concerto, sparkling performance.......2002-01-21

I have found Bartok's string quartets to be stunning, and likewise his piano concertos. What, then, of the violin concerto? Beautiful and compelling! I've been listening to it incessantly for a couple of weeks now. The performance is superb. I haven't heard the earlier Menuhin or Stern recordings, but Shaham is supple and expressive, Boulez and the CSO are impeccable, and the recording quality is clear and warm. Do not be put off by the supposedly absent "peasant earthiness," or the implication that Boulez smooths over Bartok's "noisiness" -- I for one prefer the Takacs Quartet's gypsy interpretation of the string quartets. Listen in the second movement, and you will hear an ethereal Debussian passage with harp interrupted by dissonant sawing! Clearly an outbreak of earthy noisiness. Bartok should not be caricatured as "the Hungarian folk music" composer, his vision was far more encompassing! Having said that, the rhapsodies are marvelous as well, combining Hungarian gypsy and Romanian peasant melodies in a more urbane, commercial style than some of his earlier works, according to Paul Griffiths' liner notes.

5 out of 5 stars Shaham's Performance Is Exquisitely Rhapsodic.......2001-11-22

This fine CD is my introduction to Gil Shaham's excellent violin playing. I'm stunned by the beautiful, warm tone he produces from his violin. Surely these are among the finest performances I have heard of Bartok's works for the violin and orchestra. Boulez leads a clinical, yet lyrical, performance of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra that is full rate, yet not quite as compelling as those I've heard with Boulez conducting the Cleveland and London Symphony orchestras in his Deutsche Grammophon recording of the Ravel Piano Concertos. Still, this is a minor criticism of what is otherwise a superb CD. Of course, the sound quality is absolutely impeccable, thanks to Deutsche Grammophon's state-of-the-art digital recording.

4 out of 5 stars Shaham's Playing Is Impeccable.......2001-02-20

Gil Shaham plays his violin more cleanly than many violinists out there. And he doesn't sacrifice virtuosity or lyricism to get that beautiful tone. In this particular concerto (and two rhapsodys), Shaham turns in an incredible performance equaling the great recordings of the past in playing. This violin concerto hasn't gained the popularity of say a Brahms violin concerto, but it certainly has great moments within it. One of the problems of this recording is not Gil Shaham, but Pierre Boulez. The ending is problematic and it leaves you wondering how the piece could have ended like that. The way Boulez has the orchestra playing makes the listener think Bartok must have just gotten sick of writing at some point so, mid-sentence he just wrote a quick ending and made an end of the concerto. That being said, it's still a terrific recording. Both soloist and orchestra do a superb job playing.

5 out of 5 stars fantastic.......1999-05-31

i don't know too much about Bartok. But I really like this disc: somehow it's very accessible/colloquial. The violin work is impeccable as always with Shaham, and the pieces are indelibly memorable.

The Violin Concerto of Beal Bartok was written for violinist Zoltan Szekely, who convinced the composer to write a concerto instead of the set of variations that was Bartok's initial idea. This concerto has been renumbered as the second since the discovery of a concerto written in the early 1920's for Stefi Geyer, with whom Bartok was intimate with at the time. The concerto has lush harmonies and nothing of the composers more astringent works, such as the First Piano Concerto. The concerto was completed in 1938. After a short orchestral introduction, the soloist enters with a soaring melody that sets the tone for the movement. The second movement is more intimate and is a set of six variations with the soloist playing against smaller grouping of the orchestra. The finale returns to the full use of the orchestra and has some difficult passagework for the soloist. Kyung-Wha Chung plays this demanding work beautifully and is nicely supported by Simon Rattle and the City of Birmingham Orchestra.

The concerto is paired with the two Rhapsodies for Violin and Orchestra that were written in 1928 for Joseph Szigeti and Zoltan Szekely. The Rhapsodies are in two movements and have a Hungarian style similar to the Hungarian works of Franz Liszt. They are approachable virtuosic works with appealing dance melodies. This disc received excellent reviews when it was issued and the performances remain my first choice. I grew up with the records by Yehudi Menuhin and Kyung-Wha Chung plays with a similar depth of feeling for the music; a very satisfying disc.

5 out of 5 stars A Brahms Second for the Ages from a Master.......2006-11-30

Horowitz in a different style and Backhaus own the Brahms 2 CTO for technique , tone and musicality. Backhaus has 2 other recordings available. Get them all. Bohm is a Titan.

4 out of 5 stars The only reason for 4 stars is the early recorded sound, but the performances are terrific.......2005-08-19

Wilhelm Backhaus may be a pianist who appeals to older Classical music lovers, but he was authoritative in Beethoven's Piano Sonatas and Concertos, and also in Brahms piano works. I bought this in 2002 for Backhaus' recording of Brahms PIANO CONCERTO NO. 2, and give it the highest rating. There is drama and power aplenty where needed, yet subtlety in quiet moments. Backhaus had it all, and he and Bohm were in perfect sync throughout this 1939 recording with the Saxon State Orchestra. The solo pieces in this recording are just as fine, but there is some surface noise which Classico d'Oro's engineers have managed to remove; but the noise is never obstructive, never detracts from the enjoyment of Backhaus' noble playing.

The only reason I didn't give this 5 stars was the 1930s recorded sound. I suggest this as an alternate, not the only recording of these works, especially the concerto. I recommend listeners who love this music to seek out Backhaus' 1967 recording of Brahms PIANO CONCERTO NO. 2 with Karl Bohm and the VIENNA PHILHARMONIC (Decca Legeneds), in analog stereo sound. Some critics believe Backhaus - in his 80s when the 1967 recording was made - wasn't up to the task, but he is very fine. Life's too short not to seek out the good things: check out BOTH recordings.

Wilhelm Kempff, who died in 1991 at the age of 95, was among the last musical emissaries of German Romanticism. Raised in the rich cultural and intellectual soil of Wilhelmine Prussia, he studied philosophy and music history at the University of Berlin while taking a diploma in piano at that city's Hochschule für Musik. As an interpreter, Kempff saw music in context. He could relate the emotional world of a Beethoven or Schubert sonata to feelings expressed in Goethe's poetry, or explain its structure using analogies drawn from classical architecture, as easily and convincingly as he could phrase a singing line at the piano.

Beauty of tone, clarity of texture, and graceful phrasing were the hallmarks of his playing, and they are much in evidence in the recordings gathered here. As in volume I and volume II of the Great Pianists series devoted to Kempff's artistry, the selection of repertoire for this two-CD set was made by Alfred Brendel, and it shows Kempff for the most part in splendid form. The Mozart concerto is vibrantly played, the two Beethoven sonatas and rondo dispatched with energy and the kind of spiritual elation that comes only from a deep affinity with the music. There is evidence aplenty of Kempff's extraordinary ear--as in the opening solo passage of the Mozart concerto, when he corrects for a slightly too-strong high C in the very next figure. He brings remarkable inner-voice detail to the Brahms and the Schumann, without sacrificing thrust in the former or a singing line in the latter.

Of special note here are the Mozart variations, recorded live in 1956 and showing a much more spontaneous side to Kempff than we are used to from his studio recordings, and the Fauré nocturne, an exquisite cameo in the French style, recorded in 1945 by the preeminent German pianist of the postwar period. --Ted Libbey

If you have ever heard of any other pianist who has made to sing the piano as Kempff did it, please let me know it. The captivating and spelling idiosyncrasy of a musician who is always seeking to express what lies bellow the surface and the will to discover and recreate the meaning of any musical work. As Wilhelm Fürtwangler stated once: " I actually the true interpreter is who identifies himself with the work and who improvises it all over again...I try to communicate my vision rather than my will and I prefer the reasons of the heart than all others...When technique becomes the only purpose, we are in fact losing the sense of the form".
And that's why the interpretation was not merely a matter of execution for Kempff. W.K. has said of the piano: "No other musical instrument is as wonderful as the piano. You are alone when you play." "The record is a creative product, a little piece of eternal life"
His honesty, artistic commitment and wisdom are not exhibited as additional ornaments of his playing; but under the service of the performing. His lyricism is not preconceived, it comes from a natural consequence of his personal vision.
Here you have, briefly some of the reasons that convince me Kempff musicality are so hard to find. I wish to conclude with a brilliant observation of Fürtwangler: "The art of fixing without congealing whilst respecting all hazard, this is what fascinates me. Interpreting is to conceive a music in its superior coherence."
