The highest quality performance.......1999-03-13

The music on this recording presents a typical example of a semi-opera, popular in Britain in Purcell's time. Semi-operas were based on a dramatic spoken play, and were accompanied by "incidental" music (dances and masques). It is this incidental music that usually finds its way onto a disc. This recording follows this convention. What distinguishes this recording is its high quality. Collegium Musicum 90 and Richard Hickox are experts in baroque music. The soloists include the biggest names in English vocals. Even the two additional tenors, brought in to merely double the voices in two places, are not just anybody, but Mark Padmore and Ian Bostridge (!). That tells you something. The biggest highlights include the Wood-god duet in Act V of Dioclesian, and the soprano song "Since from my dear Astrea's sight" which is placed in an appendix because musicologists don't seem to know where exactly it originally belonged. This song, which seems to speak of a man's, rather than woman's, anguish over the lost love, concludes with the most wrenching words: "alas, with weeping eyes, And bleeding heart I lie Thinking on her whose absence 'tis That makes me wish to die." Isn't that beautiful?

this recording the purcell's wunderfull music sounds nice, but not more. h. reyne is a fine player but his intonation is not perfect even his sound is good but everytime on the same level. other recorder players like steger or marq are much better.

Wonderful tuning.......2002-09-05

This is very good recording of very interesting music, not easy music anyway, at least if we talk about Dieupart, the Frenchman living in London. His style is pure orthodox French, always following the suite schema, including very amazing overtures, beautiful allemandes and some polyphonical giges. This suites are so well conceived that gain recognizance from Bach at the time. Is the kind of music to listen again and again and enjoy more and more as one gets into the stile. The playing of Hugo Reyne is expressive, absolutely in style, helped by warm tone and (well, I have to point it out) absolutely in tune. In the passpied of suite N2 he gives us an example of perfect French articulation, according with Hotetterre principles. To tell the truth I didn't enjoy the use of violin in Suite 3, which IMHO calls for a more introspective approach without artificial "ritornellos". Remarkable is the research work, leading them to the design and construction of a b' flat fourth used for the first time here (I remember the W.V. Hawe version with a b'' flat soprano fourth flute, sure best suited for a live concert not a cd, and of course all the "arrangements" for standard soprano).
The Purcell cd is the only "modern" recording (after 1980) in authentic old recorders. In fact it is so rare for a recorder player to have the opportunity to play at least once in his/her life an old instrument, and here we have a whole baroque consort (the legendary chester Bressan, the equivalent of Stradivarius) playing together, allowing us to appreciate the magnificent way their "voices" blend. The English recorder music is a whole universe partially unknown, and extremely rich, going from renaissance to high baroque. From the provincial taste, brought back to the city with the restoration, to the eclectic 1700 London musical scene, featuring many of the best musicians around the world working together.
The players in this cd are among the best and most renowned in the world, from the new and very interesting French school of recorder playing, focusing in color and expressivities. Is interesting to note here how close their style relate to Franz Bruggen. By the way there was a controversy about him been out of tune 30 years ago... Some day may be we can start a controversy about the piano been out of tune, or how awfully out of tune is a tempered major third, or about how can you be in tune and make vibrato all the time (is the way I feel after only 5 yrs of not listening romantic music)... not now, not here.
Enjoy the cd is really worth buying.

out of tune recorders.......2002-04-07

Simply put, this is a highly mediocre recording. The music itself is perfectly nice - several of the Purcell works are quite memorable, and overall these are a fine representative sample of his chamber music, as well as that of the lesser known Dieupart. But this is weak recorder playing. They are frequently extremely out of tune - and I'm perfectly aware that baroque intonation can be quite different from modern intonation and that the recorder has even greater leeway with regard to this than many other instruments, but this is just plain out of tune - and their tone is husky and not always pleasant. The miking is too close as well. Skip this one.

Tomita's Fantasy Music.......2000-06-19

When the Tomita music hit the popular music stores in the early 1970's, synthesizers had been used, for the most part, as substitution for the "real" instruments. Isao Tomita's vibrant, truly musical use of his instrument reversed that erroneous impression for all who heard him. In the album, Extraterrestrial Classics, one is treated to the wild cacaphony of voices in the Mos Eisley Cantina and soothed with the crystalline spell of Claire de Lune. The music is sublime and silly, truly fantasy music for all ages. My children grew up on it, and my first old vinyl record was pilfered by a 9th grade student one day early in the 1990's. I am purchasing the old fantasy on a new CD just for myself....and because teaching a unit on wave motion, sound and music isn't complete without Tomita!

An Extraordinary User-Friendly Multimedia Dvorák Biography.......2004-04-28

I have followed with interest the series of CDs explaining popular operas by Jeremy Siepmann, an American musicologist long resident in Britain. Each of those is a single CD with a spoken text interspersed with longish excerpts from the opera in question. This 4-CD set, though, is something else again. It is a combination of music/audio CDs with superimposed CD-ROM material (on the same discs). One plays the audio portion on your regular stereo equipment. When put in your PC or Mac CD drive, the CD-ROM portion of the discs brings up an extensive set of hyperlinked text materials as well as links to the CDs from which the musical examples are taken (all from the Naxos music recordings library, of course). Also included in the CD-ROM material is the full text of Siepmann's detailed biography of Dvorák. There is also a thick booklet that includes cast lists (various actors playing various important people in Dvorák's life), an extensive essay about the sociopolitical and cultural conditions extant during Dvorák's life, an longish essay about his major works and their significance, a graded listening plan, an article outlining recommended reading, biographical snippets about each of the important people in Dvorák's life, a chronological calendar of Dvorák's life, and an extensive glossary of musical and other pertinent terms.

Siepmann's four-and-a-half-hour exploration of Dvorák's life and works is in his wonted polished, often witty, prose. It is read gracefully by Siepmann himself. Dvorák is played by the suave-voiced British actor, Sean Barrett. The musical examples are extensive, often including complete movements, arias, etc., and are placed expertly within the flow of the text. Production values for this budget-priced set are quite high.

I will admit that I had a particular interest in this production as I grew up in a rural Oklahoma town settled by Bohemians (Czechs) and came to love some of Dvorák's music before even that of Bach, Mozart and Beethoven. I've already recommended this set to the public schools and town library in my hometown.

I am not quite sure who the intended audience for this set is. Presumably there are those, like me, who are insatiable when it comes to increasing their knowledge of classical music, its composers and their sociocultural milieu. One also imagines that even in these days of decreasing support for music and music appreciation courses in our schools, there are teachers who could make wonderful use of this material for their students. Whoever the audience is, I cannot imagine a listener coming away from this set without a great deal more information and appreciation for the genius of Antonin Dvorák.

Fine orchestra; excellent sound; strange conducting..........2003-04-20

The orchestra deserves a 4 or 5, the recording a 5,
and the conductor a 3, or 2.
This CD produced by Naxos has excellent Sibelius
selections on it. The orchestra is very good; the
sound is excellent, with up front microphone
placements...the drawback is the conducting by
Kenneth Schermerhorn. Mr. Schermerhorn "favors"
slow pacings...which makes the "Finlandia" wind
up sounding mawkish (at times, it seems on the
verge of stalling out!); "The Swan of Tuonela" is

interesting, because the slowing down actually
allows the listener to more clearly hear the
changes in the various intonations and the
individual instruments caress the melodic line
with more sinuosity; the "Karelia Suite" sounds
a bit better, to me, slowed down to a sprightly,
instead of galloping, pacing.
This orchestra sounds as if it might have done
much better with a more spirited, but spiritually
acute, conductor. The engineers have produced all
that could be asked. Only buy this CD if you
want slowed down pacings...even though the sound
is great.
Cavet emptor -- buy at your own caution.

A Great Overall Selection.......2002-04-08

This CD features a wonderful assortment of some of Sibelius's best works. The quality of the recordings is very crisp and the performances are certainly satisfactory, if not even better. I highly recommend this CD to any newcomer to Sibelius; not only is this CD available at a reasonable price and excellent quality, but it moreover will give people a good idea of what Sibelius's music is like, and will surely contribute to everybody's appreciation of his works.

Seeking the Valse Triste, I ordered this collection and found it less than satisfactory. To me, the sound was often harsh and the tempo sometimes lagged. It sounded like a student orchestra, and a small one at that. The violin solo in the concerto (excerpt) was weak. I'm giving my copy away.

This CD offers the right "best" selections and the orchestra(Slovak, most often noted as CSR on most labels) is very, very good. If there is a 3% difference between the major US or Europe orchestras, it is hard to discern.
