Product Description
This is the only recording of three of the eight works heard here. Arditti uncovers a powerful early work by Alvin Lucier, who is known primarily for his electronic music. Lucier's Fragments (Rome, 1961) has each player performing at his own speed, and the quartet improvising on a single pitch! The other two premiere recordings are Jay Yim's Autumn Rhythm, named after a Jackson Pollock painting, and La Monte Young caught in his Webern stage (1956). John Cage's Four, written for the Arditti Quartet, gets a 20-minute reading. The remaining quartets by Nancarrow, Ives, Feldman, and Carter are wonderful American standards. --Robert Reigle

From the start of his intermittent side career as a jazz pianist, esteemed conductor and composer Andre Previn has shown more feeling for the form than most classical artists who cross over. Going beyond a recreational involvement in improvised music, he has deepened his playing since skimming stylistic surfaces on his bestselling My Fair Lady album of nearly 50 years ago. Now 78, he gives us what may be his most satisfying jazz recording in Alone: Ballads for Solo Piano. The solo format allows him to reflect his debt to piano masters including Art Tatum, Erroll Garner, and Bud Powell in ways his work with trios and combos hasn't, while showing off his super-refined lyrical touch with its sophisticated sense of color. With its scampering stride touches, "What is This Thing Called Love" is the most upbeat of ballads, while "I Can't Get Started" is given a more gentle awakening. With the exception of "Darkest Before the Dawn," an obscure tune Previn wrote with Johnny Mercer for the British musical The Good Companions, the album touches familiar bases: Rodgers & Hammerstein, Rogers & Hart, Cole Porter, Kurt Weill, Hoagy Carmichael. But invested with personal meaning, this is no typical standards survey. It lives up to the challenge of making your hear these songs in a new light. --Lloyd SachsCustomer Reviews:

After Les Misérables became a huge hit in London, it moved to Broadway, bringing along two stars from the London production, Colm Wilkinson as the heroic Valjean and Frances Ruffelle as the despondent Eponine. Filling out this 1987 cast are Randy Graff (Fantine), Terrence Mann (Javert), David Bryant (Marius), Judy Kuhn (Cosette), Michael Maguire (Enjolras), and Leo Burmester and Jennifer Butt (the Thénardiers). Whether you prefer the London cast or this one just might depend on which one you heard first, though minor revisions to the show since its London debut make the Broadway version more familiar to current audiences. In fact, the 10th anniversary concert might have the best overall cast of the lot, while the three-disc symphonic recording is a must for completists.Regardless of cast, Les Misérables has become a sensation. Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg's score is filled with beautiful ballads ("Bring Him Home," "I Dreamed a Dream") and rousing anthems ("One Day More," "Do You Hear the People Sing?"), and Victor Hugo's classic novel of a student uprising in early-19th-century France provides a compelling story line that continues to thrill audiences all over the world. --David Horiuchi

Les Miserables.......2007-07-17
An average review for the average listener.......2007-05-08
I read the book, saw the play, bought this album. Those are my qualifications. As such..
I loved this CD. The sound quality was great, every song was worthwhile, and there was no major problem that would prevent anyone from enjoying their listening experience (despite what you might read on some of these other hyperventilating reviews).
In short: Like the book? Haven't seen the play? Or maybe you have. Either way - Get this CD. You won't regret it.
BEST BROADWAY MUSICAL EVER.......2007-03-25
An AMAZING Broadway hit -- Would make Hugo proud, I believe.......2007-01-08
A Musical So Good It Deserves More Than 5 Stars..........2006-12-31
This musical was probably the best thing that I have ever seen. This CD puts together all the wonders and beauty of the musical through the amazingly brilliant (and talented) cast. I have encountered many people who have started out with saying that Broadway is for the weak, but I can safely say that I have shown them the light by playing them this CD. I fall asleep to it, and wake up to it nearly everyday, I listen to it on my iPod while reading the book by Victor Hugo and watch the movies, and while my family think it's a little obsessive of me, I can't help but get it out of my head. Frances Ruffelle (Eponine)'s voice seems to spark something in all those who listen. The best tracks by far have to be:
On My Own
In My Life
A Heart Full of Love
Drink With Me
Lovely Ladies
I Dreamed A Dream
At The End Of The Day
Empty Chairs at Empty Tables
And that's only the first songs I have on first of many iTunes playlists. Among the other CDs of Les Miz that appear, I must recemmend as well the Complete Symphonic Recording. Although it is more expensive, it has all the songs that appear in the musical. This CD has the main bulk, but does not have those little songs that bring each character into more detail. Also, if you feel daring, I recemmend the French Albums. It gives the story more of a feeling of home, since it is France (The Country that speaks French) that the tragically beautiful tale takes place. All in all, this was my first CD of it I got, and I have to say that the music and cast leave a lasting impression. Buy it, and see for yourself.

Most modern Hollywood films have musical "temp tracks" laid in as they're edited, usually classical standards or music from other soundtracks that helps shape the dramatic and emotional intentions of works in progress. Sometimes these temp tracks become the score (as in "2001"), but more often they serve as a template for the film's eventual scorer. That said, we'll boldly climb out on a limb and opine that director Ridley Scott was listening to a whole lot of Holst's The Planets as he was cobbling together his modern gladiator epic. Credit Hans Zimmer for taking "Mars, the Bringer of War" and hammering its familiar harmonic and rhythmic Sturm und Drang into something serviceably fresh; cohort Lisa Gerrard generally handles the more ethereal, atmospheric passages. As epic in scope as its thematic inspiration (and with enough occasional nods to "authenticity" to make it work), this is nonetheless a work of often surprising nuances, and one that recasts the traditional heroic orchestral score in deliciously dark and ominous tones. Warning: repeated listening may inspire the invasion of neighboring countries. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:

Born in the U.S.A. is an album painted in big, broad strokes. But it was still too subtle for some--namely politicians who tried to tap the title track as a jingoistic anthem when it is in fact a bitter diatribe by a Vietnam War vet whose country forgot him. The rest of the album is a glorious grab bag of radio-ready populist anthems--his best display of pure pop songwriting ever--including "No Surrender," "Dancing in the Dark," "Bobby Jean," and "Glory Days" alongside more circumspect numbers such as "My Hometown" and "I'm On Fire." It's not true that there's no arguing with success, but in this case Springsteen's widespread acclaim was warranted. With Born in the U.S.A., all those predictions from a decade earlier--that Springsteen was the future of rock--had come true. --Daniel DurchholzCustomer Reviews:
The premier rock album of the 1980s.......2007-07-07
The album begins with the classic title track, an anthem of epic proportions. Musically, it's quite simple and repetitive, yet effective. Bruce narrates from the view of a Vietnam vet, who despite his troubles with family, war, and country, still proudly proclaims to be "Born in the USA." This song is really moving from a lyrical perspective. "Cover Me" is an excellent upbeat rock n' roll song, very memorable and catchy. "Darlington County" is a happy, summertime song, evoking an earlier Sprinsteen. "Working on the Highway" is easily one of my favorites, a fast, simple number with great guitar and organ instrumentation. I also absolutely love "Downbound Train," a depressed yet hopeful and inspiring song recounting a relationship gone sour. The short "I'm on Fire" is subtly ingenious, beautiful and touching. "No Surrender" and the very sad "Bobby Jean" bring a classic rock spirit, while remaining with the album's theme. "I'm Going Down" may be my favorite Springsteen song at least musically, it's so underrated. It almost has a country vibe to it, it showcases one of Bruce's finest performances and the songwriting is just great. The album closes with three of his best known songs. "Glory Days" is the anthemic look at the past through the eyes of one man. The amazing "Dancing in the Dark" is one of the best arrangements Bruce has put together, providing an inspired performance through his verses and a unique musical approach. Lastly, the slow "My Hometown" is a moving conversation from a father to a young boy.
It's incredible that so many huge hits and incredible singles could have been on one album. Looking back twenty years later, at least five or six of these songs still receive constant radio rotation and are remembered as classic rock singles. But "Born in the USA" is more than just a rock n' roll monster, it's an inspired take on American life and the way people live. This album is simply a must have for anyone.
80's gold.......2007-04-10
I have a lot of good memories connected to Born in the U.S.A. I remember when this album came out, and I was barely starting kindergarten. Back then it almost seemed natural that this commercial album would be the next direction Bruce would take his music, and a HUGE feeling came over many of us before this album was released that his incredibly popularity was just around the corner. It's a feeling I've had for years, and one I've never forgotten. This album just feels like it was meant to exist.
I love every song, especially "cover me" and "dancing in the dark". Meanwhile, the songs that didn't get as much attention on the radio end up sounding just as good and melodic to me anyway.
I believe Bruce Springsteen has lots of good songs on other albums released both before and after Born in the U.S.A., but I will always remember when Born in the U.S.A. came on the scene, and it seemed to stun the music world for a while. Great times.
What was overrated is now underrated..........2007-01-28
This album gets a bad rap nowadays for being too... radio-friendly.. which is not necessarily a bad thing. Every song on this album seems like it was tailor-made to be a single (with the exception of "Downbound Train"). However, it doesn't lose that greasy, gasoline-tinged effect that Springsteen's music is known for.
If you're older than 18, you've more than likely heard at least a couple of these songs before. And trust me, if you liked those, you'll like the rest of the album.
The album starts with a bang, and cthen proceeds to explore the grit, dirt, and agony that is working class life. Some songs have to do with love, some with labor, and some with just getting out and escaping.
The only problem I have with this album has is that it has a minor dip towards the end. "No Surrender" and "Bobby Jean", although good songs by themselves, interrupt the flow of the album as they are more generic than the other songs and causes the album's support to collapse momentarily. This, however, is redeemed with the 1-2-3-4 punch that is "I'm Goin Down" -> "My Hometown."
Very good album overall. The only two Springsteen albums I like better are "Nebraska" and "Born to Run" (and I've heard them all)

The themes may be familiar, but the spirit is fresh: Working with his United Streets D-Boys of America crew, Young Jeezy finds his flow on Cold Summer and has no compunction about settling into it, even when that means his compadres Slick Pulla and Blood Raw get bumped to the side of the beat. From the hot, hooky "White Chick" (street code for cocaine, despite all the shout-outs to Christina Aguilera) to the bangin' second single "Corporate Thuggin'," this is Jeezy's baby--introspective, Jeez-ified joints like "I Keep Tellin' Myself" and "Live My Life" lay street life out for close inspection, and "Check" and "Focus" chug along to characteristically unstoppable choruses. Slick Pulla and Blood Raw step up most notably on "Get It Up" (Pulla) and "Respect the Shield" (Raw), and they give off an energy Jeezy clearly coasts on; overall, though, the title gets it right. Jeezy's doing the presenting here--he's a cool, capable leader in a unit whose players don't yet equal him, but probably will in the space of a few mixtapes. --Tammy La GorceCustomer Reviews:
Young Jeezy presents U.S.D.A.: Hot Winter.......2007-07-23
Slick Pulla: Prior to this I've heard him on some mixtapes. Even though his rhymes were mediocre he gave Jeezy a run for his money but on here his rhymes are subpar to say the least.
Blood Raw: The worst rap clone in rap history next to The Realest(2pac clone) and Drag-on(DMX's mini me)! He sounds like Snagglepuss and rhymes like Jeezy. Just pitiful. Since Jeezy wants to sign clones he might as well bury the hatchet with his equally wack archrival Gucci Womane and sign him. There are only two track that are worth mentioning Check is the best song on here and Ride Tonight is okay. The first single White Girl is so stupid one has to wonder how anybody can call it a banger plus the hook is just as silly as the song itself. Classic examples of beatwasting is exhibited on Corporate Thuggin, Get It Up and Focus as all three bust some suspect verses over those dope beats. The original version of Go Getta was nothing to brag about but its better than the lackluster remix with Jadakiss(who had the only decent verse on the track). I Keep Tellin Myself, Pam and Quickie should have been found their way into the studio trash can like this mixtape. Bottom Line: Cold Summer is one of the worst releases of 2007. Young Jeezy, Slick Pulla and Blood Raw busts below average rhymes over dope production(with a few exceptions on the production part) and its safe to say that Jeezy is only going to get worse. Just avoid what comes out of this camp like a rabid dog.

It may not have been the first rock opera (the Who's Tommy was released in 1969), but Jesus Christ Superstar was a legendary album long before it hit the stage, thanks to Tim Rice's compelling book and lyrics combined with Andrew Lloyd Webber's irresistible music. Telling the story of the last days of Christ from the point of view of Judas (Murray Head), the still-unmatched original cast also stars Deep Purple's Ian Gillan as Jesus and Yvonne Elliman as Mary Magdalene, the role she made into a career (with a cameo on the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack). Decades later, such songs as "Superstar," "I Don't Know How to Love Him," "Heaven on Their Minds," and "Everything's Alright" still retain their extraordinary power. --David HoriuchiCustomer Reviews:

Vintage Vince and Andy - Welcome Back Erasure!.......2007-05-31
More upbeat and peppy than "Nightbird" (which I also loved), "Light at the End of the World" sounds like a cross between "Cowboy" and "Wild!" to me -- with a little bit of "Chorus" and "I Say I Say I Say" thrown in for good measure. "Sucker For Love" sounds like an updated version of "La Gloria", and it's even more fun. "Sunday Girl" is a perfect synthpop masterpiece. "I Could Fall In Love With You" puts me in mind of "Don't Say Your Love Is Killing Me", and so it goes on with all Vince's vintage bleeps, buzzes, and knob-twiddling. By the way, if you've got quick ears, you'll also here echoes of "Always", "Treasure", "Snappy", "Crown of Thorns", and even "March On Down The Line". Listen closely! :)
It sounds like he's dusted off some of the old analog keyboards and sequencers, to great effect. Andy's vocals are in tip-top shape, only stretched a little on the deepest notes (like the notes he used to lose himself in so beautifully on "You Surround Me"). A fantastic album, and it couldn't come at a better time.
Welcome back, Erasure!
