Transparent Quintessentially French Sound from the Belcea Quartet.......2005-09-21

The Belcea Quartet is one of the strongest of the relatively new chamber ensembles coming before the public today. Just a glance at the catalogue and the spectrum of music they tackle is impressive - Brahms, Schubert, Britten, Ades, Faure, Poulenc and now Ravel, Debussy and Dutilleux. They are an exciting ensemble.

The performances here of both the well-known string quartets of Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel are clean, free of excessive emoting, and transparent in the best sense of the word. The phrasing continuity among the instruments is seamless and in the tutti sections the sound is sonorous and never pushed. These are both very fine performances.

Added to this generous CD is the 'Ainsi la nuit' by Henri Dutilleux, a work not known to this listener but one that begs re-hearing. The quartet writing is clever, innovative and never less than interesting. It does seem to go on a bit long (twelve movements) but it is well worth studying. Recommended Recording. Nice quality and nice price tag.......2004-03-26

First of all, do not let the small price tag fool you - In my humble opinion this is a top-notch recording, and definitely worth more than it says. Very clearly and precisely played, I think this album comes very close to the rendition of the popular Emerson String Quartet(DG Masters).

I'm ceratinly looking forward for more recordings from these people!

Beautifully Played.......2002-02-22

I find this CD to be very well received. The playing is just beautiful and tasteful. I also love the mix and sound which is very important especially for this kind of 20th century French music. The critic at Gramophone magazine said that the playing was good but implied that it could have been more expressive. Well, I say that in many ways, the extra expressiveness is not really necessary and the sublime quality of this performance is possibly more desirable. In addition, there already is a well balanced delivery of expression which is very tasteful. Of course, I also admire other big name quartet's more expressive quality on these French works and I would recommend them too. But I find myself coming back to this CD with strong admiration. The playing is very beautiful and I highly recommended this CD.

Review of Flute Passion CD.......2004-08-08

I came across this CD while looking for recordings of music that I could play to Flute Students. This CD is a winner, as it contains music at the Grade -7 level (Australia) and makes a wonderful purchase for both teachers and students. The various artists represented on the CD's are amongst the best flautists in the world. An excellent choice for anyone passionate about the flute.

Interesting, and so cheap!.......2005-03-17

In response to the reviewer below, yes, some of the recordings do not have the best sound quality. But that's not what this is about, it's about great recordings of the century.
There are two discs, each with about 18 tracks, averaging about 4 minutes each, of excerpts and individual movements of the some of the most famous of the 150 "GROCs."

In the booklet it has a few interesting (sometimes not that interesting) facts about each of the 150 performances.

If you don't mind excerpts of pieces or isolated movements, this would be a worthwhile purchase, especially for the bizarrely reasonable price.

If this is supposed to be an album of "the greatest" -- I wasn't too impressed. The quality didn't seem that good and the selections, well, not all that popular to my mind.

This enterprising disc contains three fine French string quartets. To the ubiquitous coupling of the Debussy and Ravel, the Juilliard adds the sole string quartet by France's greatest living composer, Henri Dutilleux. All three works are superbly performed, and while the Dutilleux is difficult (but very good) music, most recordings of the Debussy and Ravel offer no coupling at all. Long known for their expertise in contemporary music, the Juilliard players get regal treatment on this disc, which really shows off their technical and interpretive excellence in every respect. --David Hurwitz

Excellent performance of Standard with surprise Delight!.......2002-12-21

This is an excellent album both because it has some of the best recordings of the Ravel and Debussy String Quartets. While this is a standard coupling what is unusually is the added younger Dutilleux String Quartet.

The Dutilleux is a really complex beautiful work (not unlike the other two more well known quartets on this album). To me it is kind of contrast to the Ravel and Debussy because to me Dutilleux implies more of the "Les Six" attitudes and styles then it does the impressionisms of the Ravel and Debussy. Still I think it fits very nicely to show how where French music had went from the early 20th century to the later part.

Not to be Left out the Ravel and Debussy are amazing accounts. I especially like the complex harmonies of the well known opening. I would highly recommend this disk.

A really good recording of three great French quartets.......2000-06-14

The Julliard String Quartet is known for its brilliant playing with just about anything, but they really shine in this recording. I bought this mainly for the Ravel string quartet, which is a little underplayed but really good, but the Dubussy and the Dutilleux quartets are superb as well. Definitely worth buying.

Dawn Upshaw's recital of 20th century French songs is a bouquet to their great exponent, and often inspirer, Jane Bathori. Recorded live before an appreciative Paris audience, Upshaw's in fine voice, her lyric soprano caressing each song, leaving no doubt that she loves this repertory. She adopts slow tempos and characterizes broadly, assuming a girlish voice for some songs, a device that some listeners will adore (and others find repellent). The songs themselves are wonders, from favorites like the Ravel and Satie selections to rarely heard gems. The encore is a highlight: Dutilleux's 1993 setting of "San Francisco Night," receiving its premiere recording. Upshaw's legion of fans will need no urging to grab this disc, and it's a good choice for those seeking a representative group of outstanding modern French songs. Devotees of French mélodie, though, will prefer Marston's reissues of idiomatic historic recordings by an older generation of singers, such as Jane Bathori herself and Clare Croiza. --Dan Davis

The joy of listening to Dawn Upshaw perform is that in any venue, in recital or stage performance, in any language, one can understand every word of text, and feel every expression. And, in any recording, especially this recording, one can "see" her expression, poise, and performance without having been in the auditorium. From Mozart to Vernon Duke, from Milhaud to Goliov, she exudes the pure joy of singing, with a clarity of tone and text, that communicates to the back row of an auditorium, or through stereo speakers, the jubilance that is Dawn Upshaw.

One of the best live recordings ever.......2001-12-26

I usually don't like live recordings. I don't need the audience to laugh appreciatively or burst into thunderous applause to tell me I should like the piece. But this album is different. It doesn't have that strange distant sense of watching a performance from outside the hall. In fact, just the opposite.
The warmth and character of Upshaw's performances pulls you in to the hall. Her respect for Mme. Jane Bathori makes this a true "hommage." Her French is impeccable, and it is clear she knows of what she sings. The performances of Ravel's "Histoires Naturelles" and Debussy's "Trois Chansons" are excellent, but I have to say her perfomance of Roussel's "Adieux" increased my respect for the composer immeasurably. However, of course Upshaw doesn't do it alone, being accompanied by one of the best piano accompanists I have ever heard. I recommend this album without reservation to any fan of Upshaw or 20th-century French song.

Upshaw shines!.......2001-08-27

This is truly an incredible collection of french chanson and Dawn Upshaw is really in her element here. It's a live recording, but the applause really doesn't interfere with the mood presented. The collection of peices varies by artist, but generally it's a light array of lyrical music. Upshaw's interpretation is fantastic and her pronunciation of the French language itself is incredible, much better than most non-French opera singers I've heard. A wonderful album!

Profound and insightful.......2000-12-06

I take no credit for having found this rather obscure recording: it was chosen as the best CD of the Debussy and Ravel by BBC Radio 3's "Building a Library". Having secured a copy for myself I found that it was very moving, beautifully recorded (perhaps more breathing than I'd like to hear, but string players need oxygen too!). I've lived with the wonderful recording by the Quartetto Italiano for years, but this, for me, gets closer to the heart of it: the slow movement of the Debussy has never grabbed my whole being so much, even in live performances. It's good!
