Schumann and Chopin were staples of Horowitz's repertory, and this late 1960s-early 1970s collection finds him at his mature peak, playing with elan and imaginative fantasy. The Kreisleriana is one of his greatest recordings, trumping rivals with its spectacular pianism and complete identification with the composer. The Chopin set typifies Horowitz's approach--big and bold, with personalized editorial emendations and an energy that shatters the conventional salon approach. But he also sings Chopin's touching melodies as few others can, making the lovely Op. 10 No. 3 Etude an achingly touching poem. --Dan DavisCustomer Reviews:
The Schumann Kreisleriana is worth everything, and the Chopin is magical.......2005-12-20
I have often referred to recordings of music as photographs of music. And just as photographs of people a wonderfully valuable, they are not the real person and do not capture the real person. Even a movie or documentary distorts the reality of the person. Still, we treasure our home movies, photos, and recordings. And we should. We just need to remember what they really are and that they are representations of reality (or of fictions if that is what they are) rather than real life.
It was my good fortune to hear Horowitz in recital three times; twice here in Ann Arbor and once in East Lansing. While I have heard dozens of great pianists, and hundreds of very fine quality, Horowitz (and Rubenstein) had a special charisma that was totally involving. His playing had special qualities that were unique to him. He played more quietly and yet was able to send that whisper of sound to the farthest rows in Hill Auditorium. I believe the secret of his power was that he had so many shades of pianissimo. While we clearly here a great dynamic range in these recordings, the compressed nature of recordings cannot capture the full range of what we heard in live performance.
The other thing he had was the ability to not only keep the voices clear in the music he was playing, but to give each voice its own character and sound. The recording of Schumann's fabulous Opus 16, Kreisleriana included here captures this ability to a stunning degree. This recording should be in your collection and studied carefully. While these phantasies are full of contrasts that make listening to them seemingly easy, there is so much quality and interesting music that they will reward as much close listening and study as you can lavish on them.
The other Schumann work included is the "Variations on a theme by Clara Wieck" (who became Schumann's wife and was a superb and important pianist).
The Chopin pieces included here are a wonderful collection of etudes, mazurkas, the two famous polonaises, preludes, waltzes, and the wonderful but not often heard "Introduction and Rondo in E-flat major Op 16". These are all full of magic and will hold your imagination closely. I find myself saying, "Oh, I LOVE this piece" and then the next one comes on, and I say the same thing again and then again for the next one. They are all pieces I have learned to play or want to learn (like the Intro & Rondo).
Get a hold of these disks if you can. Just a number of wonderful listening experiences.
Chopin + Schumann + Horowitz = Unforgettable Playing.......2003-04-12
It was not uncommon for Horowitz to bring to light a rarely played work by a well known composer, which is the case with Chopin's Introduction & Rondo in E-flat. This early composition (probably written for Chopin's most advanced pupils) abounds with glittery passagework and technical configurations similar to his Concertos (which Horowitz never recorded). Under Horowitz's hands, the work exceeds the boundaries of mere salon piece and emerges as a virtuoso tour de force.
Horowitz (who had a Polish grandmother and was fond of pointing out that he was "half as much a Pole as Chopin") considered the Mazurkas to be Chopin's greatest works, and often stated that there was more music in the shortest Chopin Mazurka than in the longest Mahler Symphony. The pianist treated the Mazurkas less as dance pieces than as "dance-fantasies" and his playing of the works was freer than the more straightforward Rubinstein. Highlights of this set include a seductive F-sharp Minor, Op. 59 No. 3.
Horowitz made several recordings of the ever popular A-flat Polonaise, and this one adheres most closely to Chopin's text. The introduction is very sparsely pedalled (as if Horowitz were saying "Look! I can play the tricky introduction without using the pedal to cover up insufficient fingerwork. Take THAT, Rubinstein!"). The remainder of the piece goes with gusto and flair (too fast to be a Maestoso), but he somehow misses the grandeur which Rubinstein brought to the piece--and which Horowitz himself would attain in his last years. The A-major Polonaise is also taken at a fast clip, but this somehow seems more appropriate to this work, and one is reminded of Chopin's remark that if he were able to play the piece the way he meant it to be played, the piano would lay in ruins afterward.
If anyone thought Horowitz, then approaching 70, had lost any of his fire, their worries were quickly dispelled with the Etudes included here. The C-sharp Minor goes at a rapid clip, but unlike many pianists, there is no loss of clarity. The famous Revolutionary Etude is given a more outwardly virtuosic performance then the pianist's 1963 recording, yet somehow the piece has less impact here.
The ubiquitous C-sharp Minor Waltz is from the Boston concert of April 7, 1968. Three days previously, the Reverend Martin Luther King had been murdered in Memphis. At the beginning of this concert, Horowitz came onstage with an African-American minister, and played Chopin's Funeral March in memory of Dr. King.
Horowitz learned Shumann's Kreisleriana in the 1930s, but did not play it in public until 1968. Several attempts to record the work in concert were not successful, and Horowitz came to the conclusion that he needed the peace and quiet of a recording studio to achieve the concentration for a performance suitable for posterity. Horowitz recorded the work at one inspired session on December 1, 1969, and this may well be the most successful Kreisleriana ever recorded. Ironically, Horowitz, who often had trouble holding together a Beethoven Sonata, makes this structurally splintered work emerge as one piece. This is one Kriesleriana which is never rambling or boring. There is virtuosity here, but never for its own sake, and there is poetry in plenty. This stands alongside the 1932 Liszt Sonata and 1951 Rachmaninoff Third Concerto as one of Horowitz's greatest recordings. However, it should be pointed out that this reissue of Kriesleriana uses a few alternate takes, which are markedly different from the original LP and an earlier CD issue (MK42409). Although the performance is basically similar, there are several differences in detail.
Schumann's Variations on a Theme by Clara Wieck, originally included as a filler for the Kriesleriana record, is given a straightforward reading here. It a lovely little work, but it is even more beautiful in its original context: as the third movement from the composer's Sonata in F Minor, another rarely played work Horowitz would bring to light in 1975.
The sound is more than acceptable here, and especially fine in the Schumann works.

a MOST NECESSARY recording! .......2006-07-10
This is actually "The BEST of Virgil Fox, Volume 3"! Therefore, it belongs in your collection, along with Volumes 1 & 2!
The entire album is simply awesome (as all Virgil's releases were), and it is without doubt the hardest of all to find. Buy a used copy on here, it is the ONLY way to get one!
Highlights are:
The Durafle Suite Number 5.......very rare! I know of no other recording of it! It is simply beautiful, and sadly neglected. Certainly reason enough to purchase this recording!
The Boellmann Suite Gothique is just wonderful, and, another very good reason for purchasing this set.
And, the Vierne and Dupre pieces are played with such magnificent "Virgilian" splendor...all the fond memories of the Riverside concerts come flooding back from so many years ago. Simply put, (as Fox's fans know) there was never anyone to match him...even Liberace couldn't touch him for outrageousness, and of course the Organ is a much more "splendorous" instrument!
As I said above, do yourself (and your collection) a favor and add a copy of this album to it (even a used one from a secondary dealer on amazon here). You will not be sorry! I wish you many happy hours of listening! ~operabruin

Yevgeny Kissin is one of the most successful pianists of his generation. This disc, recorded live at a Carnegie Hall concert, demonstrates why. Kissin is one of the best Chopin players alive. His playing of the big Fantasy is among the best performances I've heard, catching each mood of the music and playing with flexible rhythms that never deteriorate into anarchy. The Nocturnes sound like very private meditations, while the Scherzo is a big public statement. All of these fine interpretations are delivered with gorgeous piano tone, very well conveyed by the recording. You cannot hear better Chopin playing today. --Leslie GerberCustomer Reviews:
Shattering pianism from a young genius.......2006-03-18
Yet behind the shattering virtuosity works a sensitive musical mind, and so it's sad to think that 13 years later, Kissin seems to have coarsened that imaginaiton by relying too much on his bravura technique.
Surreal renditions of truly great works........2003-04-17
I am at a loss for words to express how beautifully the music has been rendered. The sound quality is very good. Superb. Absolutely a must have CD.
JUST EXCELLENT!! IF I COULD HAVE GIVE 10 STARS I 'D DO IT !.......2003-01-02
The initial Fantasia Op.49 it's simply great and Kissin shows all his wonderful talent(I saw him in life concert in London at Royal Hall and I was deeply admired of his genius). The Nocturnes are really touchy and incredibly smoothly played. The Great Walzer are also played with extreme sensibility that I was almost moved by them. But in my opinion the best piece of music I have ever listened about composition and performance is The Polonaise Op.44. In fact it had so deeply touched me when I listend at it the first time, that I will always remember the atmosphere created from this music in a small room of a Residence in London with 2 Japanise friends of mine drinking wine and eating chease....while this music was plaing at candel-light...was impressing the feeling created by this music! You will listen at the end of this performance a large clapping hands from the audience (the CD is life recorded at Carnegie Hall in New York). You want a suggestion from me? Buy this CD and you will have forever a piano masterpiece with you for all the best moment of your life. I really mean it.
Bye from Italy.
Your faithfull Luca (greetings to all my friends around the world)
Must Own Chopin Recital.......2001-07-02
He commences with a tremendous work, the Fantasy in F minor (a piece I have performed publicly as well). His performance is amazing. The subtle dynamics and virtuosic technique create a lovely interpretation.
Next is a set of 3 Waltzes. Though I feel Kissin's interpretation of the A flat major Grand Waltz Brilliante (op. 34) could be slowed down a hair, it is unquestionably rousing, and his performances of the other two waltzes are fabulous, particularly Grand Waltz (not brilliante) in A flat major.
The Polonaise in F sharp is a fantastically difficult piece. When I first bought this recording and heard this performance, all I could say was wow. I brought it to my piano instructor, because at the time I was studying the piece, and all he could say was, "That's beautiful." It is by far the best performance of this piece that I have ever heard. It is the only performance of this piece in which I have ever felt a more beautiful voice emerge.
Following the polonaise, Kissin chose to perform 3 nocturnes. Chopin's nocturnes are known for their soaring voices, and Kissin chose 3 of the best known, particularly the 2 from Op. 27, which are considered the best. His performances here are equally exemplarly, and it is to his credit that despite the fact that he concludes with a nocturne marked Largo (forgive me if it is addagio... I haven't looked at the D flat nocturne in some time) he still gets thunderous applause.
Finally Kissin chose to conclude with Chopin's Scherzo #2 in B flat. Scherzo #2 is not all that musically significant, but, it does have a really catchy melody. In the hands of a virtuoso, it's triplets will always delight the crowd. I've heard this piece performed both live and in recordings by several greats, among them Argerich, Rubenestein, and Ashkenazy. None of them create such a, dare I say, catchy piece out of one of Chopin's works. I walk away from listening to this performance invariably humming the main theme...and judging from the crowds response, who could not wait till the last note rang out to stand on their feet and shout "Bravo!" this performance will do the same to almost anyone.
I fervently recommend this recital recording to anyone who loves Chopin, even if they have every piece on this CD already well recorded. Each piece played is played fantastically well. I can not express more how wonderful this CD is. It is a must buy.

DIGRESSIONS (ON): IRELAND PIANO MUSIC (COMPLETE) (PART 1).......2001-08-02
John Ireland (1879-1962), however, is arguably the cornerstone of British composers for the piano (with Frank Bridge a close second), and Eric Parkin, a former Ireland student, his most sympathetic advocate and champion. [Parkin was the first pianist to record Ireland's complete piano oeuvre in stereo on English Lyrita LPs--- late 70s into early 80s. Other pianists, like Daniel Adni (1982) and Desmond Wright (@1995) have released an LP and CD, respectively, of Ireland collections; and, now, for Naxos, John Lenehan has completed a recent second CD (2000) in his ongoing series.] So, it seems more than obvious that the greatest composer of English piano music has been sadly neglected--- especially under the circumstances. This is why Parkin's second stereo/digital traversal of Ireland's piano output on three Chandos CDs is so critical an issue.
Volume 1 (released in 1992) opens beautifully with Ireland's three DECORATIONS (1912), his admitted homage to Debussy's premiere book of piano PRELUDES (1910). Here is our first glimpse of Ireland's magic, the thread of his thematic penchants and the general ambient mood, nostalgia, sensitivity and tenderness so imbued in the majority of his piano works. In "The Island Spell" and "Moonglade," for example, one need go no further than to conjure in his mind's eye the sheer mystery that these titles imply and, then, to allow the music to spin out its wonderful dream-like reveries. Ireland is indeed a painter of musical mood poems, fully realized in THE ALMOND TREE (1913) and, from the four PRELUDES (1913-15), "The Undertone" and the reverentially beautiful "The Holy Boy," whose melody is so enchanting.
The RHAPSODY (1915), a more full-bodied, substantial work, gives us glimpses of Brahms and Reger, whose own "rhapsodies" are like dark, penetrating ruminations. Here's a piece that proves Ireland no mere miniaturist only. From its brooding beginning, the RHAPSODY develops an ebb and flow, its central section rippling surprisingly along, ghost-like, before returning to its initial development and climax.
The following three works, THE TOWING PATH, MERRY ANDREW and SUMMER EVENING (1919), return us to the wistful English nostalgia so pervasive and beautiful in Ireland's piano music, and his fabulous hallmark. SUMMER EVENING is particularly lyrical and endearing, gentle and heartfelt, especially in its yearning.
The concluding PIANO SONATA IN E MINOR seems a distillation: In its first movement Allegro, we hear echoes of "The Island Spell," the very opening track of the CD, transformed and energized, and some of the more dramatic evocations of "Fire of Spring" (the fourth of the PRELUDES). The second movement Lento, lasting nearly ten minutes, is a gorgeous, hymn-like chordal sequence very reminiscent of Satie (e.g. GYMNOPEDIES). It's awash with a kind of "spirituality" unusual in Ireland's work. The Con moto finale is a perpetual motion of contrasts and thematic recapitulations that builds to a glorious, triumphant conclusion. Brilliantly-conceived, this altogether satisfying twenty-five minute work brings us full circle.
Parkin, without a glimmer of a doubt, is the soul and substance of Ireland, his mentor, and undeniably an excellent advocate of his music. The totality of his immersion, and the sensitivity to every nuance these works offer is inspired. His recordings of Ireland's piano works will remain the milestones against which all performances must be compared.

More delightful gems from Mendelssohn's piano oeuvre.......2007-02-09
When someone mentions a piano sonata in B flat major Op. 106, I can only think of one: Beethoven's Hammerklavier. It's unfathomable to think of another sonata with this title. What are the odds of another sonata in B flat major that just happens to be an Op. 106? Since the work was posthumously published, it certainly wasn't deliberate on Mendelssohn's side. Even more peculiar is the first Allegro movement which actually does resemble the first movement of the Hammerklavier; it's almost a petite version of it. This movement is purely inspired by Beethoven and still fresh with delightful Classical ideas. The Andante movement is stunningly beautiful. These four minutes contain one of Mendelssohn's loveliest streams of melodies and modulations. The last movement is just as engaging, with gorgeous arpeggios and frolicking rhythms. In my estimation, this work is a magnificent example of Mendelssohn's competence with the piano forms.
The three Caprices from the Op. 16 are interesting diversions. The first and third have their moments but are predominately restrained, with occasional build ups of passion. The most outstanding of them all is the second, a 3 minute scherzo with a virtuosic and powerful middle section. More remarkable is the Album-Leaf in E minor. This contains a unique and inspired theme. His Romanticism shows a little more here than in the Sonata. I think this Album-Leaf is one of the best gems on this recording, in fact. It possesses abundantly beautiful ideas, all concisely stated, reaching graceful tension and then resolving itself mysteriously. Perhaps an even more original piece is the ravishing Andante cantabile e Presto agitato in B major. Mendelssohn has an affinity for combining these tempo markings together: andante and presto. He is always introducing a radiant stream of alluring melodies and then transforming them into a splash of impassioned ideas. With typical Classicism, Mendelssohn explores an array of emotions, delicate and reserved, but always angelic. It only took me a few listenings to believe that this 8 minute work is worthy of more attention.
The Variations in E flat major is an unusual composition because it consists of only five variations on a single extended theme. It does not measure up to the divine Variations serieuses, but it is still a glorious set of variations resplendent in typical Mendelssohnian fancy and artistry. I find the theme itself rather banal, but Mendelssohn's gifts for improvisation certainly aid him here. He efficiently turns this simple music into an opulent, stylish and tasteful presentation. Perhaps saving the best for last, Naxos and Frith have recorded a decent Rondo capriccioso. I confess that I much prefer Perahia when it comes to Mendelssohn's piano works. While Frith plays this with finesse and excellent technique, the exhilarating drive and Romantic feeling found in Perahia's delivery are unfortunately absent. The Rondo is assuredly the best composition on this disc, but I didn't pay it more than one hearing because of the attention I think these other rarities deserve.
Bottom line: I think the Sonata Op. 106 will delight any who buy this; the Op. 16 Caprices and the Album-Leaf are superlative gems and prove that Mendelssohn's piano works deserve more championship. Beginners to Mendelssohn shouldn't start here, but for those who love to explore obscure piano compositions from major composers, I whole-heartedly recommend this disc.
