This is a great set of recordings for the money, the only problem was I've had to clean some of the CD's before they played correctly.

This set is a good way to start listening to classical music. It's very well produced and easy to listen to. I purchased it to use as part of my world history high school class. It would have been nice to have some bio information on the composers. However, the product is exactly as advertised and good value for the money. The students were intrigued by how many of the excerpts they had heard before.

Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30

Although I studied classical music at school, I had all but forgotten it until I bought this set. I heard several tracks I haven't heard for over 30 years, and I had been humming Brahms's 'Hungarian Dance no. 5' for years without ever knowing what it was and it was on the disc, so that was nice.

I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.

It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!

Classical Masterpieces of the Millennium [20 CD Set]

A very helpful collection.......2007-03-24

I define this set as an excellent way to find out who you like, and who you don't, among 20 of the important composers. It opens the door to purchasing more complete pieces by composers you do like, and can save a lot of time and money in the process.
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.

A great way to start a classical music collection. It's nice to have a full CD of each composer. It makes it easy to keep track of selections/composers I already have and what composers I still need to puchase to complete my collection.

A Fabulous CD.......2004-10-14

The Idiot's Guide to Calssical Music is an awesome Cd for those people who want to have a tiny sample of all the great classical compositions. Track 61 and 63 are my favorite.

Mega-Sampler! This really does have 99 tracks!.......2002-03-20

Yes, this CD really does have 99 tracks. How do they do it? Each is about a minuet long. Some are longer, some are shorter, but you get the micro-essential moments of the music.

If you like burning your own CDs, then this is a great source for intra-track fillers, along the lines of They Might Be Giants' "Apollo 18" album, which has all of those short tracks on the end. The idea is to put your CD player on shuffle, so the short tracks get mixed in with the bona fide songs. The result being a very unusual album.

The booklet gives an explanation of the track, where you heard it (i.e. the Warner Brother's Cartoons, or on famous films), and where you can get the full piece of music. So it's a mega sampler CD.

I can honestly say that this CD is a great gift for the friend who has everything.

Take it for what it is, a clever and useful GUIDE to classical music. No, it is NOT an uncut rendition of Beethoven's 9th symphony. It IS a cd that will jog your memory. great compilation, vividly played.......2006-01-02

a great, great compilation. why??
1) sound. yes, it was recorded in 1930s, so not everything is so clear but unless you are too demanding in sound quality the sound is very acceptable (for my taste at least) and, most important, luckily EMI almost completely deleted any trace of "hiss" (which I find unbearable even with better and clearer piano sound).
2) pianist: Schnabel, as far as I read, is a legend, at least in LvB piano sonatas. They are vividly played, with appropiate "elastic" tempi (a similar effect in past conductors, look at my review of Brahms symphonies by Jochum, with a similar "flexible" approach). Also there is a lot of virtuosism. The only problem I find is in Appasionata, specifically in its last mov: too, too, too fast, with no time to "savour" the notes and with very important "forte" notes (they are climaxes indeed) strangely played "piano" so their effect is completely lost. Yes, it sounds like a twister, a storm but misconceived. the rest of the CDs is played with a near perfect approach. Maybe there are techical problems (I am not a pianist, that is what i read) but the conception is always OK (except for 3rd mov op 57, as i said).
3) works. To begin with Beethoven some "early" famous works are always wellcome eg Pathetique and Moonlight. They are absent here, because the aim here is to present the middle and late periods from the piano sonata point of view.
-In the late period, you can in 1 CD include hammerklavier and some other, or the last tryptic, the solution found here (together with sonata 27). To play together the last 3 sonatas makes one see them as a group and to find out relations eg sonata 30 and 32 (the corners of the 3) end with variations. I like them very much, specially the sonata 32.
-In the middle period you have the works in the 1st CD. Favourites are Waldstein and op 57, yes (perhaps the 2 most important sonatas of LvB, at least from the most popular). So are the sonatas 22, 24 & 25 simply fillers ???? Definitely NOT!!! They are quite complemetary to the 2 famous already cited: nº 22 has a minuet, but a middle period minuet, which is far advanced than the "early style" minuets. And has a toccata mov which sometimes makes me remember Schumann. Nº 78 has one of the most lovely movs ever created by the composer, and should be better known. The last mov is quite complementary. And Nº 25? A surprising and charming work. Sounds too Mozartian (the brief K 545 was a model?), but never he goes back in style to his earlier period. It has 3 movs (wonderfull all 3 !!!) and all played, with complete repeats, in less than 9 minutes !!! Clearly an essay on how to compose a full (for the quality and diversity of the ideas) "brief" sonata.
please, try this compilation. you won`t regret.

Dull sound in these reissues.......2005-11-07

I had high hopes for this reissue of the magical recordings by Schnabel of the Beethoven sonatas. The engineers did an admirable job of reducing the surface noise from the 78 rpm disks. But they took out the sparkle from the keys that can be heard on the "Schnabel Plays Beethoven" Pearl editions of these recordings, or the "Beethoven: Piano Works" Naxos editions.

A piano colossus plays Beethoven!.......2006-03-30

The Sonata No.30 may be well considered as part of an impressive Trilogy, in which languid flame of Beethoven begins to vanish. The profound homesickness is far to be self indulgent. Beethoven has come to the end of the road and searches untiringly an exit door. This autumnal character is visibly remarked by the composer through the employment of the Fugue form in every one of these three works. Beethoven opposes deliberated or unconsciously the Fugue as signal of resigned acceptation, cathartic refugee and warm memories and smartly contrasts with his fiery and thunderous attacks expressed as Fortissimos to carve in relief the untamed human spirit. Indeed you may easily realize the Farewell taste, because of the fact all these endings are achieved, just leaving float the bars, without that marked heroic affirmation of previous works such as Patetique or Appassionata for instance; on the contrary he accents the ebb tide and tepid atmosphere of the last breath, but loaded with infinite noblesse, without signals of despair, anguish or inner conflict ( as Tchaikovsky or Mahler).

I have always thought around the Sonata No. 31 that express like no other else, the "Memory Reverberation", but emancipated of any trace of nostalgia or pain. I would say Beethoven is hovering through his livings, early childhood dreams and illusions, adopting a similar attitude that you or me assume when open an old photographs album.

Finally the Sonata No.32 anticipates from the second Movement a journey without return; and that unstoppable sensation of unavoidable missing in the thickness of an unending night is only agreabled for a very brief motive that reminds us to the first seed of an unborn musical genre: the jazz. The last Movement is loaded of such dramatic density and furtive evanescence that engages even the most indifferent listener.

As you know, most of pianists accustom to follow the loyal tradition that has become a non sacred ritual, that consists in playing these last three Sonatas in tandem, without play any encore. The unsaid meaning would support my thesis about the unbreakable unity of these piano works.

The impeccable good taste and superb genius of Rudolf Serkin made possible to listen these unvaluable recordings keeping in mind all the previuos considerations, due Serkin was a thinker musician.

A BIT VARIABLE.......2005-03-08

Only one of these three performances strikes me as being top-class Serkin. What I had been hoping for was some hitherto-undiscovered early versions from him that had somehow escaped the compilers of the discography in the 2003 biography of Serkin by Stephen Lehmann, but what I have got is three performances from the 1970's that I already knew and owned. Serkin was a bit of a pain for recording performances and then deciding not to release them. How he arrived at his decisions in this matter is intriguing - I wouldn't have reached the same conclusions as he did in all cases. The most interesting issue is over the A flat sonata op 110. The version we have here is the one he actually did release, and it seems to me nowhere near as good as the one he sat on, available as part of the posthumous collection eventually issued with the agreement of Peter Serkin. That strikes me as one of the greatest Beethoven sonata renderings that I know, whereas the one here is a poor second. The touch lacks crispness, the dynamics are less well differentiated, the first movement is a little bit too slow and the fugal sections of the finale do not give the same thrilling sensation of great doors opening and closing. The E major op109 suffers from these characteristics to some extent as well. Surely this speed in the first movement is never 'vivace'? Serkin had recorded the work once before, and happily that reading is now available again as part of this same series. His earlier tempi in both the first movement and the following prestissimo are more my idea of what these indications require, and in the final andante, while the speed is slow in both performances, it convinces me more in the earlier one.

The last sonata op111 is more like the real thing - much more. There is no hint of tiredness here, the touch is the great Serkin touch as we know and love it at its best and there is a striking evenness about it too. Just what Serkin was not satisfied with is not at all clear to me, and we should heave a sigh of relief that this recording has been reprieved for us. The first movement is grand and effortless, but I will admit that it doesn't have quite the sense of fierce involvement that I get from a live 1990 performance from London by, of all people, Michelangeli - not as a rule my idea of a natural Beethoven interpreter. The arietta is sublime in every way, though, taking us away to some transfigured outer realm in its later stages.

Serkin is still Serkin and a unique prophet of Beethoven even at not quite his best. There is any amount to be learned from all three sonatas here. Nobody need have any hesitation in acquiring this record if the purpose is to understand Beethoven better. For the special followers of this great musician and player these are performances not to miss. He left us little enough.
