As if delivering Oscar-winning films were not enough, Clint Eastwood is one of the few directors to also compose much of his movies' soundtracks; even more impressive is that he's able to work within distinct genres, from jazz to country to Hollywood-style neoclassical. With help from orchestrator Lennie Niehaus, Eastwood creates a compelling soundtrack to the WWII drama Flags of Our Fathers, combining Eastwood originals (including son Kyle's contribution on "Knock Knock") with Philip Sousa marches; classical pieces by Mozart and Haydn; and period-defining pieces by the likes of Dinah Shore ("I'll Walk Alone"), Irving Berlin (a new recording of "Any Bonds Today?"), and Artie Shaw ("Summit Ridge Drive"). These are fairly minimal but it's nice to see them eschew the usual war-movie tropes--like the movie itself. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Album Description

Flags of Our Fathers tells the life stories of the six men who raised the American flag at the Battle of Iwo Jima, a turning point in WWII. The film is based on the bestselling book of the same name, written by James Bradley and Ron Powers, which chronicled the battle of Iwo Jima and the fates of the flag raisers and some of their brothers in Easy Company.

4 out of 5 stars A FINE SOUNDTRACK........2007-02-12

The soundtrack to "Flags of our Fathers" is a fine recording of music from the Oscar-nominated film. The strength of the album lies in the period songs, which are arranged beautifully by the artists who perform them. Clint Eastwood's orchestral score is another matter. It's got some fine moments (Like in "Wounded Marines," "Inland Battle," and the theme), but is a let-down overall. It's hard to know who to recommend this to. If you've enjoyed Clint's soundtracks before, then you'll probably like it.
Grade: B+

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2007-02-01

I don't see how this album could possibly get lower than a 4. It's melody is haunting and emotional. Sure, there is a lot of era-filler music, but those pieces are good too. Clint's actual score is great, especially "wounded marines" and "end titles."
My mother almost comes to tears every time she hears the music, and I've often heard her humming it when she thinks no one is around.
All in all, it is a magnificent cd, keep up the good work Clint.

3 out of 5 stars Better as Background Music.......2006-11-22

While this is an interesting mix, it works better as part of the film experience. To listen to the music, without the film accompanying, causes it to lose much of the impact. One thing film makers almost never get right is the spirit of the vocals in movies about the 1930s and 1940s. The female trio, in the war bond drive scenes, sounds like a contemporary imitation of the vocalists from that era. They don't sound authentic and I have heard many vocalists (solo or mixed voices) from the 1930s and 1940s on compact disc. This happens with orchestras attempting to recreate that era even when playing those arrangements. One orchestra that gets it absolutely right is the Dutch orchestra The Beau Hunks. So it can be done. Check them out on Amazon.

4 out of 5 stars surprising score from a multitalented man.......2006-11-01

In addition to being a talented filmmaker,Clint Eastwood is an accomplished musician, and this score shows it.There have been several other posters here lambasting Mr.Eastwood for scoring his own pictures and screaming "He's no(insert composer name here)".Don't pay any attention to them. While he may not be in the class of John Williams or others as a composer, this is a melodic and highly effective score that fits the film and is well-performed under the brilliant baton of Lennie Niehaus. The main piano theme is memorable. This is a great companion to
his "Mystic River" and "Million Dollar Baby".

4 out of 5 stars Captures the Times.......2006-10-26

This soundtrack is a very good integration of director Eastwood's music with traditional patriotic music and music of the WWII era. Overall, this soundtrack captures the time and place and the lives affected by events. As a soundtrack album of the film, this CD works effectively.

5 out of 5 stars Even my kid likes this!.......2005-11-07

This is an amazing collection of songs, all performed with such skill that even my 8-year-old son likes this CD. Brahms and Beatles, Mozart and Ellington, there is something here for everyone. And thank you, thank you, thank you for "Bassoonist's Holiday."

5 out of 5 stars Bassoon Me!.......2004-08-09

I delight in the bassoon! What a unique and great sound, throaty and thrillingly coarse, yet soaring to sound at times like sax, like oboe, like cello, like a bunch of bassoonatics!

This is delightful collection of musical styles played by this innovative and talented quartet. Choosing to select pieces that are not typically of the bassoon repertoire, we go from Waltz to Gershwin to Broadway to Motzart to Lennon/McCartnye to Sibelius to most of us unknowns such as Mitchell Clarke to Duke Ellington.

All played with passion and gusto and excellent tonality, phrasing and tempo.

Bassoon Me again!

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Bassoonastics.......2003-09-27

This would have to be the best bassoon ensemble cd on the market. The arrangements are stylish and clever, and the performances brilliant! Fraser Jackson must be the most accomplished contrabassoonist I have ever head. This cd is a must for any bassoonists collection be you amateur or proffessional.

5 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING QUARTET.......2002-04-14

This disc is really superb!!! Not only is the playing at an extremely high level by the group, the arrangements are also outstanding. The Brahms is abolutely beautiful. The group goes from lightning fingers bravura to sweet soulful singing. It is a joy to listen to again and again.

5 out of 5 stars Simply fantastic!.......2001-10-26

I simply love the Caliban Quartet! They breath new life into bassoons! The way they bring out the music is simply magical. Not only do they sound good, their technical abilities are simply amazing!

If I had to choose one CD to spend a month locked in isolation with, this would be the one. Its varied but it flows well together. It's restive and soothing. The quality is beyond excellent!!! At the price, anyone is a fool not to own it, and give it lavishly as gifts. Its gorgeous, lush and fabulous! Everyone that hears it in our home, falls in love with it!

4 out of 5 stars Great music, Excellent Value!.......2000-07-26

Rarely can one buy so much good music for so little. This compilation features almost 80 minutes of high quality music.

5 out of 5 stars This truly is essential!.......1999-10-23

What a brilliant idea from one of our leading record companies! On this disc, they have assembled a programme of highlights from their vast collection of choral, vocal, orchestral, and solo instrumental music that is very satisfying. As with most CDs of this sort, it is a case of some tracks not appealing as much as others- I for instance am a lover of choral music so the gorgeous renditions of Stanford's "Magnificat" by St. Paul's Cathedral Choir or John Sheppard's divine motet "Libera Nos" by the Sixteen are obvious preferences of mine. However, whether you seek dyed-in-the-wool orchestral classics as Haydn's "Surprise" Symphony, less familiar works performed by period artists (such as "'E irei Madr'a Vigo" by ancient Spanish composer Martin Codax), or snippets of breathtaking instrumental solos (such as the rousing performance of Lefebure-Wely's "Sortie in E flat" which is sadly only an excerpt), this disc is bound to have something on it for you. And all of it is finely recorded.

4 out of 5 stars Fine Contribution.......2006-09-03

A fine compilation of Vaughn Williams' songs. Sung very well indeed by Johnson and Keenlyside with excellent accompaniment. This CD really shows the full range of Vaughn Williams vocal writing. This whole series is an admirable undertaking.

4 out of 5 stars lovely performance.......2006-03-24

This is a very nice compilation of Vaughan Williams' vocal music, some of which is not easy to find on CD. The performers do an excellent job. Nice voices, and the music is sensitively sung. A really good value.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful performances of stirring music.......2003-04-27

This CD contains some of Vaughan Williams' best vocal music. The singers are superb and the accompanist is sensitive.

I love the whole CD, but adore
Searching For Lambs, which is a touching love song, set for violin and tenor duet
Silent Noon
It Was A Lover and His Lass
Antiphon, the last song in the set of Five Mystical Songs. It is a great song of faith, set by an infamous agnostic. The Church would be the poorer without Vaughan Williams wonderful hymns and arrangements of hymns. [I also recommend Vaughan Williams' Hymnal and Pilgrm's Progress.].

I bought this set to hear On Wenlock Edge and am not disappointed. It is a great song cycle.

By the way, this bargain-priced CD includes all the song texts.

One of my favourite vocal CDs. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Leaves One Drooling for More!.......2005-12-16

First off, I tend to avoid samplers such as this in classical music, prefering to listen to an entire piece rather than selected movements. But a friend gave me this for Christmas years ago and I've found it to get quite a bit of playing time. The selections are exemplary, the performances excellent and the recording quality is outstanding. What more could you ask for? (Simple - you could ask for the entire pieces rather than just selections) If you want a sample to wet your lips, try track 5, which is the second movement from the clarinet concerto in A major (K622). Incredible!

This CD was the first classical music I purchases. Over the years it kept growing on me and drawing me into classicial music. Now that I have a good classical music collection, I still find myself popping this CD in the player more often than any other. It has a great assortment of songs performed and recorded well.

5 out of 5 stars This Is A "Keeper".......2002-08-25

When I discovered that this great Jazz classic had been released on CD, I thought I had died and gone to Heaven! I have the original vinyl, but no turntable, and was certain that I'd never hear it again, so I am a very happy camper.
I have seen criticisms of the narration by Al (Jazzbo) Collins which is laid back and understated, which in my opinion is entirely appropriate.
Certain critics have questioned the selection of Mel Torme and Francis Faye as Porgy & Bess, but I think they just don't get it. (This is JAZZ opera). They were both wonderful. Especially Frances Faye whose passionate rendition of "I Loves You Porgy" almost makes one forget her raunchy night club act.
Add to Torme & Faye the beautiful vocals of Sally Blair and Betty Roche and an unbelievable assortment of jazz musicians (some of the greatest of the day), and you have an experience to remember.
Every time I listen to it, I discover something new.
For those that complain about the quality of the remastering, just let me say, I agree that it is not the finest, but since the alternative is not hearing those great vocals and instrumentals, I'll take it. It is still a lot better than the scratchy old vinyl.

3 out of 5 stars Jazz alternative to operatic venue.......2002-08-04

I was pleasantly surprised by this jazz rendition of the classic opera. The collection fully utilizes the Gershwin synchopation with a snazzy twist.

4 out of 5 stars Caveat Emptor.......2002-07-06

Let's begin by saying there is much to like on this recording. Let's also say that the recording is very, very eclectic. I am a big fan of Torme, a fact which would help anyone who listens or buys this disc. But Torme is the epitome of the White Jazz Singer and this is a musical which should (no racism here) be sung by black artists (with the possible exception of Joe Henderson's largely instrumental Porgy & Bess featuring Sting--yes, Sting--and Chakka Khan.) The narrator on this recording is a big annoyance. It almost comes across as a period piece--but for all these "cautions" I find it an engaging & beautiful recording. Unlike some of the reviewers, I found the quality of the disc just fine & "Bess's" vocals quite lovely. But give it a listen before you purchase it.

1 out of 5 stars Bad choice, bad value.......2002-03-22

I like Mel, and some (not all) of the vocalists interpretations on this CD, and the arrangements are very good. Based on this, I would say that it is worth owning this as perhaps a part of a collection of Porgy & Bess recordings, although certainly not the first or only...
However, the narration is so pervasive and so silly, I would say just forget it. I am not sure, but I think this narator is the same guy who used to narate high school education/public service films in the 50's(e.g. "What should Marry do on her first date" or the duck and cover films).

This CD isn't worth more than 5 bucks as a novelty item.

3 out of 5 stars An Unusual Porgy and Bess.......2000-10-23

This should definitely not be anyone's only "Porgy and Bess." Get one of the sets with classical singers on it for the opera as Gershwin envisioned it. But this is a fascinating jazz interpretation of the score with mixed blessings -- Russ Garcia's orchestration and the musicians are wonderful. Faye was an unfortunate choice, but the rest of thesingers, especially Torme, are first-rate interpreters. This is not everyone's Porgy and Bess, but a fascinating piece of jazz interpretation.

Album Description

Critically acclaimed by the international press for her innate musicianship, radiant voice, and a sovereign stage presence far beyond her years, Canadian soprano Measha Brueggergosman is in great demand as a concert artist and opera singer. So much to tell, on the CBC Records label, is Ms. Brueggergosman's debut CD, accompaniment by the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra conducted by the legendary Roy Goodman. The title of the CD, So much to tell, comes from the text of Dickenson's "Dear March, come in!" Just as Copland felt a connection to the poetry of Dickinson, so too did Samuel Barber have an affinity for the texts of James Agee, and far from simply writing "popular songs", George Gershwin's works contain a rich melodic and harmonic language. Two added bonuses include Barber's Serenade for Strings and a wonderful ghost track.

5 out of 5 stars I judged this album for myself and enjoy it a lot........2006-11-07

Too many haters reviewing this woman. I read all the reviews and then listened for myself after hearing Ms. Brueggergosman sing with the San Francisco Symphony live. I think she sounds lovely here too.

4 out of 5 stars Measha Maligned.......2006-10-19

I bought this disc for a couple of reasons: I love the Barber songs, and I enjoy Copland a lot. Recordings of "Knoxville" aren't thick on the ground, so every new one demands attention. And then I read the reviews here.

Vocal collectors are often malicious in their criticism of artists they dislike (I have been known to speak colorfully of singers) but the complete unfairness of several of the "reviews" to be found here is really quite surprising. I don't think I can recall a single reference to vomit rising, let alone two in a single hit piece. So what's actually on this disc?

This is a beautifully produced, perfectly placed, intrinsically beautiful voice of considerable size and heft. It is lustrous and healthy. While it is characterful and has plenty of "face," it reminds this listener of the voice of the young Leontyne Price, whose recording of "Knoxville" with the composer is so justly famous. Ms. Brueggergosman is an excellent musician with an intelligent, unfussy way with the texts. The supporting artists are much more than adequate, and the recorded sound is fine.

I cannot claim to enjoy the Gershwin pieces, but since this material isn't of much interest to me--and since I have little experience of how its typically presented by a serious singer--I can't criticize these performances apart from saying they sound perfectly respectable. The Copland songs are radiantly lovely, certainly among the best recordings of these available. The "encore" spiritual is magnificent a capella singing, full of deep feeling and sincerity. This genre has been accepted for so long as American art song--at least since the time of Marian Anderson, followed by Price, Norman and so many, many other outstanding artists--to find it dismissed out of ignorance here is painful.

This young soprano should have a magnificent career. I look forward to hearing her for many years.

1 out of 5 stars Can't Take It Anymore.......2006-01-19

My roomate has been playing this CD for 10 minutes, I just can't take it anymore. 2 words, this album stinks. Okay, that was three words, I normally do not lie, however this music is driving me to drink. I lie when I drink, just note that this review is the exception, it is the truth!

1 out of 5 stars So Much to Apologize For.......2005-11-23

OK, I read the mixed reviews, and like others have noted I decided to pick up this CD based on the content (Hello, huge Barber fan over here). I am going to focus on reviewing the reviews, not the album, I believe the negative reviews summarize my feelings on this album and do not want to waste your time bringing up the downfalls of this album again.

Initially I thought that the negative reviews seemed contrived and sarcastic. Coupled with the fact that they were bunched up got me thinking that they were "plants" by rival artists. Then I bought the CD and have a completely different opinion, the good reviews are probably the plants.

The negative reviews are all posted on or near a Tuesday, much like this one. My theory is that when the record stores launch new CDs on Tuesdays (as they do every week) this CD ends up in the bargain bin and then in some poor person's living room.

Bottom line is pass this CD up, no matter what day of the week you happen to stroll by this in the bargain bin.

1 out of 5 stars Doubled over in pain.......2005-11-23

Let me be honest I am anything but an opera afficianado but I do like good music. I bought this on a whim. When I got home I slipped into my basket chair and slipped on my bose headphones and turned up the music. That is when the unfortunate event occured. I doubled over in pain because of the horrendous singing. This proves once again that Canadas major export of lame a%$ singing needs to be shipped back over the border.

    Album Description

When Eroica originally released Volumes I and II of Bela Bartok's solo piano works, featuring world class Hungarian-American pianist June de Toth, our primary mission was to commemorate the 50th anniversary of his death. With that mission accomplished, Ms de Toth is now engaged in completing the Bartók cycle. She will be the first woman to record the Bartók solo piano works in their entirety. These beginnings have launched Eroica on a fast track to our goal of international acceptance and recognition. We have initiated an intensive series of auditions, which have resulted in the signing of over a hundred brilliantly gifted new artists. We are honored by the fact that these artists and ensembles have chosen the Eroica label to introduce their CDs to a world wide record store and internet audience. Auditions and negotiations with other world class classical artists are also underway at this writing. You may order them directly from Eroica or Vitaminic, as well as by phone, fax or secured credit card orders.

You will find Eroica CDs listed in the Schwann Opus catalog, and at all Muze kiosks. You can also order for CDs from your favorite record store, including Tower, Borders Books and Music, Hastings, Sound Warehouse, Media Play, Blockbuster, and all other record stores. Just tell the sales person to look us up in the Alliance One Stop and/or Muze kiosk data bases. Eroica CDs are distributed internationally by Myong Eum Music Co., Ltd.
