Taking its title from Stravinsky's inscription on his Symphony of Psalms, this recording offers exemplary performances of some of the 20th century's most important choral works--all of which have "an American connection" and a sacred theme. Leading off the program is an instrumental work, Charles Ives's The Unanswered Question: a strange choice, perhaps, but one that effectively sets the tone, much as an organ prelude prior to a church service. While Stravinsky's masterpiece was not intended as a church work, its powerful texts and inspired choral and orchestral writing place it entirely in the spiritual realm. Harry Christophers and his forces deliver a performance memorable for its unfaltering momentum and sonic impact. It's also a rare treat to hear such fine performances of the five spirituals from Michael Tippett's A Child of Our Time and such stylish renditions of Poulenc's Sept Repons. --David Vernier
