One of the most beautiful Christmas albums .......2005-11-22

I love Kathleen Battle's voice, and to get such a great collection of beautiful sacred music, it was like a dream come true. She sings many traditional carols like Holy Night, Hark! The Herald Angels Sing, Silent Night, which is possibly my favorite here, you may think you have heard this song so many times, but Kathleen's voice really shines in it. Her English diction is so incredible, you can understand every word, which is not something many opera singers can achieve. Her singing is always so natural and lovely. Many other songs are oustanding on this album, I love the two version of Ave Maria and the Italian song Gesu Bambino. If you are looking for a really beautiful collection of Christmas music, this album is a great choice.

A Christmas Collection For The Ages.......2005-11-13

If there is one performer I miss hearing on a regular basis, it is Kathleen Battle. Anytime I knew that she'd be in a Metropolitan Opera radio broadcast, I knew it would be a performance to remember and more often than not, I was correct. She has a light voice that reaches the upper reregisters with ease and has as a gorgeous sound. She not a regular at many opera houses these days, and in likelihood, if she still did perform on the world's opera stages, we'd be hearing critics say her voice was not what it once was, but thanks to her recorded legacy, her voice will, always have that youthful, energetic sound.

Overall I believe that Ms. Battle performs better in complete opera recordings than recital albums, but most of her recital recordings are of at least good quality and this Christmas collection is outstanding. She handles all of the works with apparent similar ease, but since the recording is so varied, this is a compliment to her skill as a performer. She begins and ends with "O Come All Ye Faithful" where she does a few vocal acrobatics but it's never overdone. Each time I think of what the bets part of the collection is, my mind changes. She brings her skills from the operatic stage in her renditions of "O Holy Night," "Gesu Bambino" (only Pavarotti sings this better, but it's a very close second), and "The Zither Carol" which sounds so much like something that could come from the mouths of Oscar from UN BALLO or Zurbinetta from ARIADNE AUF NAXOS, two of her signature roles. The music from the African American Spirituals tradition and American background are well done and the accompaniment of the Harlem Boys Choir, used to great advantage here adds so much.

With so many Christmas collections from the world of opera available, choosing one can be difficult, but this is one collection that has proven to be a joy for almost fifteen years and will continue to give holiday pleasure for years to come.

I probably have 50 Christmas albums. I love many of them. This is my favorite. Leaves me astounded and breathless every time I enjoy it.

Pure Joy.......2003-12-07

In a world where disturbing things are all too common, Christian scripture guides us to dwell on that which is lovely. Kathleen Battle's blessed voice is most certainly one of those lovely things.

I bought this CD in the early 1990's, and I am here to buy it again because I have worn out the original with scratches, etc. I only listen to it during the Christmas season, but I enjoy it enough to hear it all year.

The 'Christmas Celebration' CD should be enough to convince you to also purchase Kathleen's 'A Carnegie Hall Christmas Concert'. Ms. Battle's wonderful soprano voice is joined by that of the mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade, and the blending is more than memorable. There are a couple of songs which are on both CD's, but you'll want to hear both. In fact, the video of the PBS special is also available, and I recommend buying all three. You won't regret it.

Some of my favorite selections from 'Christmas Celebration' include 'Bring a Torch, Jeannette, Isabelle' and 'Fum, Fum, Fum', both of which are from a culture different from my own. I found such glimpses into unfamiliar favorites to enhance my own enjoyment of the Christmas season, as long as all of my traditional American favorites were included. They were. "I Wonder As I Wander" and "Oh Come, All Ye Faithful" are there among the other favorites.

I was disappointed that these are not the same arrangements as the original movie soundtracks. For example, in Colonel Bogey, the countermarch from the movie soundtrack is not included in the arrangement on this CD. Don't get me wrong, the songs are good, but I would have preferred the same arrangements as the original movies.

An outstanding compilation.......2006-08-25

This compilation is superb and a real must-buy. From Band of Brothers to A Bridge Too Far: every war movie theme is represented here. An all time classic.

The really good ones are missing........2005-07-18

While this compilation has some masterpieces such as the theme from The Great Escape and Is Paris Burning, it's missing some of the finest tracts ever written. Where is the theme from Victory and Ernest Gold's stirring epic from Cross of Iron? The closing theme from Inchon was also a feast for the ears, but it's not here. It was written by Jerry Goldsmith, one of the foremost soundtrack composers of our time. Instead we're subjected to the likes of Hanover Street and The English Patient. I'll admit Inchon and Victory weren't Academy Award winning movies, but their soundtracks were second to none. As John Stossel would say," Give me a break"!!!

Grand Christmas Music.......2007-01-19

This is a recording of a stage production with a cast of a hundred or so. It is celebrating Christmas, and the Winter Solstice, in the Victorian Age. If you find most Christmas Carols boring after a while, this music is for you. The Lord of the Dance is particularly stirring as the cast brings the audience into the music. It's wonderful!

Typifies Revels Excellence.......2006-12-20

This Project typifies marvellous Revels Winter Celebration/Christmas music...there is simply nothing like it out there. In my opinion this is their 2nd best collection, 'Sing We Now of Christmas' being the best. The brass ensemble and Revels Chorus display wonderful musicianship, and the historical instruments and languages add a great dimension. The songs are a work in history: you can feel it. What a great collection of songs! The only negative point I can come up with (no doubt Revels fanatics will disagree) is that this album is too short on music at 45 minutes, containing quite a few tracks of poetry/playlines that I really can't work up the energy to care about. I would have prefered more songs in their place. I buy CDs for music personally, so -for me at least- those poetry tracks constitute wasted space.

What a spectacular album containing some of the best Chrismas Songs, toasts, and atmosphere in the most traditional way. It makes me feel warm inside and really captures the joy and giving of Christmas.

Feels like your'e at a local play.......2003-11-03

This is a neat CD - its very down to earth - very renaissance sounding with trumpets, flutes, and voices that are more like those out of a play than a usual holiday cd that is dense with choirs, polished singing. Most all the songs are all up-beat and while some might be familiar (e.g. here we come a wassailing, 12days of christmas) many were new to me. Really a fresh way to celebrate. All the songs seem to be very traditional in terms of toasts that might be given at a feast or songs that would be sung at a celtic feast. There were some songs that I prefer to skip over that talk to killing animals for the feast etc.

Young fans of Jim Henson and the Disney Channel's Bear in the Big Blue House will revel in this holiday celebration of 20 short seasonal songs exuberantly sung by gentle Bear and other characters like Doc Hogg and the raspy-voiced mouse, Tutter. Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Kwanzaa are represented here in eclectic songs that range from triumphant ("A Berry Bear Christmas") to soothing ("Just Listen") to forlornly earnest (Jack the hound singing "The Best Present Ever") to a happy medley, "The Woodland Valley Carols," that indulges in holiday twists such as "Oh, come all ye otters" and "On the fifth day of Clamsmas." In "That's All I Want for Christmas," Santa Hogg takes requests for "tons and tons of cheese" and "a hundred trillion clams." A real favorite is the jazzy "Bat Dance" by Robert and Deena Cole: "You see, it's all in the wings." A wonderful quality to all the songs is that they're clearly enunciated by the motley crew of fuzzy characters, so kids can actually hear the words. Heartfelt holiday cheer abounds in Peter Lurye's impressive production that surely rivals the Muppets in inventiveness and kid appeal. This is a really great CD. My kids have enjoyed it and it is nice that it covers more than just Christmas. We have listened to it for several months everytime we are in the car.

Potential buyers should note that there is another CD, Christmas In Vienna, issued a few years later, that seems to contain the meagre number of tracks from this disk, plus an additional 6 tracks, making for rather better value.

There is also a VHS tape, very cheap at the time of writing this, also titled Celebration In Vienna and apparently containing the same performances, which may contain 75 minutes of playing time.

Album Description

The Coming of Christ is the first of a series of three CDs using the exquisite music of Gregorian chant to describe and illuminate the life of Christ. Sung by the Gloriæ Dei Cantores Schola and conducted by Dr. Mary Berry, CBE, these reknowned experts bring a wealth of experience to the interpretation of the chant. Well-known pieces alternate with numerous antiphons to bring us closer to the time of Christ's birth and early childhood. The prophetic announcements, the longing and anticipation of Christ's birth as well as the joy of the angels' message are all vividly portrayed in the chant. Chant-based organ works by French composers Alexandre Guilmant and Charles-Marie Widor frame this program celebrating the life of Christ. These are the first recordings to be made in the superb acoustics of the Church of the Transfiguration, a basilican church made of limestone, in a modern-day abbey.
