1 out of 5 stars not as good as the ep.......2007-07-10

Their EP "Doom" is what got me hooked. JFAC had alot of good ideas packed into their demo. The music was so well executed that it blew current imitators away. I really enjoyed the song structures. I could care less about the pig squealing. Its kind of cheesy if you ask me but the screams and growls were better. Now they bring us "Genesis" which sounds more like a tiring attempt. There are no hooks and every song almost sounds the same. Its pretty bland. I've already lost hope in them and think that this band is going to get raped by the scene. I'd say, pick up the EP "Doom" which is much better than the "Genesis" LP.

1 out of 5 stars I DESPISE Job For A Cowboy.......2007-07-08

If I could give this more than a 1 star I would.
This band claiming to be "Death Metal" is disgusting.
Chuck Schuldiner would be turn over in his grave if he heard this garbage.
Although, if you like JFAC you probably don't know who that is.
I like true Death Metal such as Death,Obituary,Cannibal Corpse,Morbid Angel,Immolation,Suffocation,Deicide, etc.

This album and band are a disgrace to everything Death Metal.

DOWN WITH THESE PATHETIC POSERS!

5 out of 5 stars excellent service.......2007-06-27

4 out of 5 stars Good but not great.......2007-06-22

these guys rock hard, but some of their stuff is boring
i still like them, but they are not that special

2 out of 5 stars Vastly overhyped.......2007-06-16

Genesis, Job For a Cowboy's debut full-length, managed to sell about 13,000 units and landed at #54 on the Billboard charts. I'm sure there are a number of metalheads, myself included, that heard that and said, "How?" Starting off as a deathcore band, the band released the Doom EP back in 2005 and made a decent amount of success on websites such as Myspace and YouTube. My only exposure to the band had been with their announcement on this summer's Sounds of the Underground. Background aside, the question remains, does Genesis live up to the hype it's receiving?

I'm sorry to disappoint, but I've got to scratch my head and wonder why this band is receiving such praise. Apparently, the Doom EP was full of breakdowns and the standard pig squeal vocals and they 'matured' into death metal for their debut. On some levels, the band does deserve some credit for dropping the 'core' elements, but this is death metal by numbers. After listening to this a few times, the only words that come to mind are generic and dull. This is death metal that would have been considered stagnant 10 years ago, let alone in 2007. None of the riffs stand out and predictably, the songs blend into each other. The only track that stands apart from the pack is "The Divine Falsehood", which moves at a slower and epic pace. The remainder of the tracks alternately blast and mid-tempo chug their way through, with barely any remarkable soloing to boot ("Martyrdom Unsealed" being an exception). Add to the fact that there are two throwaway intrumental tracks tossed in lowers the running time to about 26 minutes, which is a tad short, even for death metal.

Any seasoned death metal veteran will know to shy away from this one, while fans of the Doom EP may find themselves disappointed by the changes made to the band's sound. Sure, it's not a bad record, but given the hype preceding it, it just doesn't hold up to the standards. The notion could be made that JFAC could push some scene hipsters into real death metal, but let's face it, that rarely occurs. One thing's for sure, there's plenty more well-executed and deserving death metal albums worthy of your time than Genesis.

Often taken to task for the maudlin mellowness of his back catalog, Don Henley's viewpoint on Inside Job is frequently as astringent as any of the best of his solo work, if refreshingly more stylistically diverse. Whether skewering the self-absorbed target of "Nobody Else in the World but You" with some welcome funk or lambasting the corporate co-opting of Mother Nature in "Goodbye to a River," Henley still wears his heart proudly on his sleeve. But the changes in his life have also blunted a previous propensity for self-righteousness into something more akin to subtle, resigned irony, and this album wears it well, especially on strangely downbeat "celebrations" like "For My Wedding." Featuring a typically all-star cast of guest musician pals (including Stevie Wonder, Randy Newman, Glenn Frey, and Heartbreakers Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench), coproducer Stan Lynch (formerly of Tom Petty's Heartbreakers) has helped Henley fashion a more timeless, deftly shaded production envelope that should age better than most. Though he still can't help lament his world's hardening and loss of innocence (to the point of "They're Not Here, They're Not Coming," echoing Randy Newman's "Trouble in Paradise" nostalgic plea to "bring back the Duke of Earl"), Henley does it here with a subtle grace that may just win him a few new, late-blooming fans. It's an album that underscores how quickly life's fine wine can unexpectedly turn to vinegar. --Jerry McCulley

3 out of 5 stars The Zenith and Ebb of Trying for the Big Statement............2007-07-20

Still at the beach folks. The mime troupe has behaved except the other night when they invited a Gilbert and Sullivan touring company to give a performance of "The Pirates of Penzance". It took place on a yacht anchored off shore about 80 yards from my sand castle. The mimes clapped with one hand and I wondered why these actors would bother without any applause? I could ask my guides. But until I do - I will look askance at Penzance and wear those incredibly expensive headphones that block out all noise.
I must admit that I was somewhat disappointed by this album. I suppose, in fairness, how could Henley hope to reach or equal "The End of the Innocence"? But, that being said, it was a long, long, LONG wait (what was it? 10 years or so?) between offerings. I realize that he did get involved with The Eagles again. And that probably took some time. Still- some of the songs here were worth it- some were not. Plus, I probably object to the flow or continuity. Too many ballads. Too much slowing down after he reaches an infectious groove. However, after all, it is Henley and the lyrics never fail to impress. There are mottos, sarcasm, irony, wit, tenderness, illumination and the hard, cold truth. All this- and perhaps at times- too much.
He begins fine enough with "Nobody Else in the World But You", a song about supreme shallowness. This song excites and should have set you up for what follows. But, it doesn't. I can accept the known love ballad of "Taking You Home" and the lovely acoustic heartfelt "For My Wedding". But, probably they would have been better positioned elsewhere. The other ballads are too laboring for me. "Goodbye to a River" echos his belief that the beauty of nature is slowly being destroyed by the human race. "Damn It, Rose" (about a motherless child) is a good song. But, perhaps too depressing to be included. "Annabel" a sweet lullaby is nice, but out of place between two stronger songs. I don't mean to suggest that these songs aren't good- they just aren't strong enough for what Henley is capable of. Perhaps that is my objection.
That being said- he can still sprinkle songs with great lyrics. In "Everything Is Different Now" (having an honest love change his whole world) the music is strong without rocking out. The lyrics? Poignant and effective. Truth (Heaven shot back-"You get the love that you allow") and what is important in a genuine life ("what it means to you to be alive?). Henley has the capacity to cut through the nonsense of life in such a wonderful and direct way. This song, I think, is one of his best.
Have no fear- he is not without humor. In "They'e Not Here, They're not Coming" ( a sly jab at government deception and aliens), he quips that we can't expect to be saved by a spaceship. It's too dangerous in a world that won't "give Oprah no home on the range". I laugh at this, however, a glaring notation on the pettiness and ignorance of importance in humanity.
On "Miss Ghost" we have an appropriate eerie groove. He is haunted by the vision and memory of an old lover. Obviously, she had too many illusions (or delusions) and he quips, during a toast to her memory, "Here's to seeing through you- Miss Ghost". So clever. So great.
"My Thanksgiving", I think, is an attempt, to make the big statement like "Heart of the Matter" did. It is a thankfulness for life, with all the foibles one must endure. The song, at least rocks a bit. But, you also get the tidbit of truth with "sometimes you get the best light from a burning bridge". He sneaks lyrics in for you to think about. That is such a strong part of his music.
Winding up we have "Inside Job" which shows his mistrust towards the powers that invade our lives and alludes to a conspiracy of sorts. The music is disjointed, but with an urgency. Not sure if I really like it. I don't like to think about politics and government. I'd rather concentrate on the sun shining and being by the ocean. But, hey, that's just me.
"The Genie", however, is one of my favorites here. Reflecting that there is always a price to pay for our actions, we can never reconsider. The motif- you can never go back. Once the genie grants your wish, you can't erase it by putting him back in the bottle. It's like opening Pandora's Box- the damage is done.
In closing- is it a great album? No. Is it a terrible album? No. It is far from his best- but there are still things here to pick up on and enjoy. Think of it as an effort given to mimes - they are listening as an audience-but no one is saying a word.

You Can't Put the Eyepatch back on the Metamorpho -- Cheers

1 out of 5 stars Yuck.......2006-11-10

Now I know why I never picked this up when it first came out...ah, the pitfalls of a completist. NOWHERE near his three 80's releases. Don should spend his time fighting for the environment instead of music.

4 out of 5 stars The Ballads does it. This is gentlemans rock , and no bullshit.......2005-09-20

Don Henley is a shining star. On this one it`s the ballads who does it. The reason for no 5 stars on this album, is that some of the other tracks with more tempo beats, doesnt give me the ultimate Henley experience. Sure the voice is there, but when he show further development from The End of the Innocence track, from 1989 Cd, im totally blown away. Track 2 Taking Your Home is nearly up there, with The End of The Innocence. Its the ultimate soundpicture, so carefully developed . On Track 3 there are one other ballad to come with the Title For my Wedding . The tempo up beat Workin It is also a winner. Track 12 Annabel is my favourite, and has much of the soundpicture you can find on Desperado.
Its Don Henley voice who does it. Theres something in it which is difficult to describe with pure words. Just listen to it and it will tickling youre instincts. This one makes me shiver. All in all and album nearly up at The End of the Innonce standard.

3 out of 5 stars "They say it's just the predatory nature of the beast".......2005-03-09

A mature and wizened Don Henley emerged from the woodwork to gift us his first solo album in almost a dozen years with 2000's "Inside Job." Frequently poignant and personal, and still as opinionated as ever, it's odd to listen to Henley's rants on environmentalism and corporate robber baron scumbags, and then think of what he would have been singing on an album post Enron, 9/11 and "four more years." Even prior to those events, his barbs still sting.

Between this album and "End Of The Innocence," Henley founded the Walden project. It's not a mere rock star vanity project, as Henley has used his time and money to support the preservation of Thoreau's legacy and beloved Walden Woods against developers who wanted to turn the land into a housing development. His concerns are reflected in the song "Goodbye To A River," which questions how corporations and greed so ruthlessly destroy for profit things and places and timelessness. At the same time, he skewers the corporate mentality that would "take away the right to own your own ideas." Hollywood biz-pigs also gets hammered on "Nobody Else In The World But You" and "Workin' It."

But all is not totally self righteous on "Inside Job." Perhaps most poignant is "Damn It Rose," where Henley laments a friend's suicide. He takes the time to look at his own reflection, wondering about his past life of "doing exactly what I used to do, pretensions to anarchy and art." The final two songs on the CD also speak to the domestic pleasure that Henley, a man past 50, has also grown to love. Both "My Thanksgiving" and "Annabel" speak of a man more at peace with himself that the rebel Eagle of old. The musicianship is top notch, helmed frequently by Tom Petty's Heartbreaking buddies Stan Lynch and Mike Campbell, along with guest appearances by Stevie Wonder and Randy Newman. It makes "Inside Job" an enjoyable (although not essential) listen from one of our best American songwriters.

3 out of 5 stars You get the love that you allow...........2005-03-01

The problem with an artist like Don who is so "current events" oriented is that his material gets dated very quickly and, therefore, doesn't hold up well over time. Not to say this album is a waste. Far from it. His bar is set pretty high so giving this cd a 3 star rating is like giving other artists a 5. "For my wedding" "Taking you home" "Annabelle" "They're not here" and "Everything is different now" are all very, very good tunes. And, to me, "Thanksgiving" is a letter to the same person he wrote "Heart of the Matter" to on his previous album. He's at his very best when he writes from his soul and most of this album comes directly from that source. It's only when he goes on a personal rant that makes some of the other songs irrelevant after a couple of years.

5 out of 5 stars The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra needs a guitar player!.......2006-11-09

Granted, they only need it for one composition (the last one, "The James Bond Theme") but still, without the guitar it's just not the same. Barry didn't compose this one so I suppose it was a bonus and I shouldn't complain, really. The rest of the music on all the CDs is fantastic. Some of the stuff I had heard before without realizing who had composed it. Very enjoyable, to say the least.

5 out of 5 stars Persuaders Theme!.......2006-03-02

Buy it for the Persuaders theme, probably the best TV theme song ever written.

5 out of 5 stars A Variety Of Classics!.......2005-12-06

John Barry has been composing film scores for over forty years and this is only scratching the surface of his productions. Never mind that the entire set is recorded by the Prague Philharmonic; it's pure to Barry's themes. While John Williams compositions ("Star Wars", etc.) are wild and flamboyant and Jerry Goldsmith's (Hoosier's, etc.) are mood pieces, John Barry crosses over all barriers and is amazingly diverse. Barry has recorded most of the exciting James Bond themes, melodramatic classics like "The Lion In Winter' and moody theme hits like "Midnight Cowboy". He also tugs at the heartstrings with compositions from, "Somewhere In Time", "Frances" and "Out Of Africa". He varies his themes for all types of films and few composers capture it so well.

There is over four hours of music in this set with a colorful and informative booklet.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible Barry Collection.......2004-03-11

Any fan of movies will absolutley love this collection. Being a movie buff I couldn't wait to get this boxed set. Knowing Barry from all the James Bond movies, I did not realize his involvement with so many others. The orchestra is magnificent in all these themes. I'm listening to "High Road to China" right now and I'm drifting in the clouds in a Tiger Moth with Tom Selleck and Bess Armstrong. If you are familiar with a movie it will definitely have you seeing it again, if not the scores are still beautiful. Any fan of classical music will be pleased as well. Travellers will defintitely enjoy it for a long drive. I know from when I use to travel that music like this made the miles float by faster. I highly recommend these four CDs even if you just know a handful of the songs.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Priceless, at any price.......2007-07-06

Years ago, watching peter Jennings cover the funeral procession of Princess Diana, my soul was captured by some hauntingly beautiful music that at times played in the background. So began my mission to find out what it was, who wrote it and how I could get it. After some correspondence with the network I was put in touch with the woman who "put together" that part of the programming. All she could remember is that it came from the movie "Black Beauty". THEN I found out how many versions of that had been made lol. With determination, I finally found it, and had a local music store order it for me.
There are no words to describe what this music does to me. I did try listening to some of the other tracks, but they didn't even come close. I rate this music right up there with the 1971 score for "Jane Eyre" by John Willams... and that's pretty high :D

5 out of 5 stars Good overview.......2007-04-18

Very nice overview of Elfman work. Insufficient by itself but worth having along with the full soundtracks. Bonus disc is a nice extra.

5 out of 5 stars Great Music!!!!!!!!!.......2005-09-08

I Love Danny Elfman's music so much that I have started my own collection of the soundtracks that he composed. For a while, I was trying to find the "Beetlejuice" theme song from the TV show, but thanks to this release, I finally have it!!! Keep up the good work Elfman!

5 out of 5 stars Very nice for a Danny Elfman collection.......2005-08-02

Music For A Darkened Theater, Vol.2 is a great cd!!! I love all of the tracks on both cd's,but my fav. ones are the t.v. scores and the This Is Halloween demo!!! If you love this, then i recomend looking at all the actually albums on this cd and his other works!!!! good job,Danny Elfman.

5 out of 5 stars Bring on Volume 3.......2005-05-04

The liner notes and "This is Halloween Demo" on this compilation are well worth the CD price by themselves. Danny comments on each of the tracks on the CDs which is a rare and ego-free look at what a composer thinks of his own work.

Edward Scissorhands is magical, Black Beauty is a rollercoaster of emotion, and Dolores Claiborne makes me want to find the nearest piano. This is not a "Most Popular" compilation, rather it aptly showcases Danny Elfman's (and Orchestrator, Steve Bartek's) brilliance and wide range of style.

Every suite has an Elfman signature, such as the layered complexity which never sounds overdone, or the use of a choir as an instrument.

This (and Volume 1) are examples of the work of a modern day composer who consistently stands out as one of the best.

If you like this and have the spare cash, grab the individual scores from some of the movies he has worked on, including "Men In Black", "Spiderman", "Batman", "Batman Returns", "Nightmare Before Christmas", "Edward Scissorhands", "Mars Attacks" and so many more.

Composer John Powell pays homage to this film's Eurocentrism and modern setting with a spare, twitchy main title and other cues that evoke a winning cross-pollinization of the oeuvres of Thomas Newman and David Holmes. Combining organic orchestral elements with electronic flourishes to good effect, that jazz-influenced, post-modernist tack quietly propels the best moments here. The score's main shortcomings are predictable: Thunderous blasts of percussion cadences and thrash guitar that have become expected contemporary action movie cliches. Yet Powell manages to freshen even some of those with intriguing new timbres. Like the suspense caper genre itself, it's a score where the pay-off is not nearly as interesting as the getting there. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite Movie Score!.......2007-05-28

This is a soundtrack with upbeat driving rhythms I never seem to tire of even after nearly 3 years. Though, as with other reviewers I was disappointed about so many tracks by other artists not being included.

One of my favorite non John Powell tracks was the transition music just after the Venice heist to the cast being in the Alps.

For ages, I tried to locate the song "Girl and Posse Surf" by Paul Haslinger, but even after nearly 3 years was unable to do so.

Finally, with an email to the right person I discovered the awesome track which had long eluded me was not called "Girl and Posse Surf" after all.

The song is called "Let's Go" and can only be listened to via Mr. Haslinger's website. It can not be purchased on any soundtrack or any cd. Though, hopefully one day it will become available.

But, until then, if you love that particular piece of music in the "Italian Job", at least you can listen to it on Mr. Haslinger's website ([..]).

All other non John Powell tracks are available for download or purchase.

In summary, I would highly recommend John Powell's music score. It's great music to drive to, workout to, clean the house to etc.

2 out of 5 stars No Money???.......2006-10-29

The one song I was looking to buy this for was 'money' buy velet revolver. I can't believe it is not on the soundtrack??? It played during the movie, then in the end credits - the guitar solo is killer!!!! How can they leave it off the soundtrack???? Yes that is correct, because of money...

4 out of 5 stars It does not have all the music from the movie (alas, a dissapointment) but the score itself is...Good........2005-07-19

Like most, I became severely peeved when I bought this c.d. and realized that most of the songs I had had stuck in my head were not there. I was angry and strongly considered returning the c.d. when I looked at my receipt and low and behold, there, in small print where the words "cannot be returned if opened." And my c.d. (as it was) was opened. So, I gave a big sigh and stared at the c.d. for a while, then decided to get my eighteen bucks worth out of it. I stuck it in my boombox and decided to evaluate it.

The intellegence of this c.d. takes a while before it really hits you. Yes, it does not have all the songs from the movie on it, but in the grand scheme of things, it does not truly need it. I listened to the c.d. long and hard for a while before it struck me: This...is cool. John Powell, while having produced much better soundtracks (I am Sam, The Bourne Supremacy) proved himself as having a way with digital noises, drums, and orchastrations. This is a clever c.d. I like it. Listening to it when I'm at home loafing around is actually quite fun, and gives me time to really appreciate what a neat soundtrack this really is.

Anyway....This is a good c.d. It is catchy, and has a nice beat to it. I really enjoyed listening to it. However, be forewarned: This does not have the rock and techno tunes in it. If that's what you're looking for, move on. For the rest, buy this c.d. It is smart and clever. You'll like it.

3 out of 5 stars A Big Mistake.......2005-04-02

There are some great moments on this sound track, and some very interesting orchestrations, but the One Glaring Omission is Roger Waters, MONEY.
MONEY is in the film, and over the closing credits, but not on the disc - THIS is the reason I would have bought the cd.

4 out of 5 stars It's ingenuity sneaks up on you..........2005-01-23

The Italian Job was a score that really took me by surprise. I went to a local store, bought it, popped in my car cd player and listened on the ride home. At a first listen, I was a bit disappointed. For the most part, it seemed a bland, themeless series of percussion variations with minimal instrumentation layered on. I shelved the cd, not expecting to return. Then, a couple months later, I pulled it out again. Then I started noticing some of the ways Powell was doing things with the music very subtly, crafting an extremely cool, slick and well-developed score at a low volume. Often with action scores, the music is simple and bombastic, easy to recognize themes. This one is smarter and slicker than that, though. The Italian Job is a score that you will grow to appreciate and enjoy more with each listen. You will also find this to be the case in Powell's "paycheck" score as well as the two "bourne" scores. (The Bourne Identity especially takes time to appreciate, but partially because it actually does have genuine flaws.) I highly recommend this score, it's terrific, especially in the highlight track "A new plan". The only weakness is that the score dives into bloated action music in the final few tracks, it's entertaining, but not up to the subtle standard of the rest. A recommended purchase.

4 out of 5 stars My First FIF Album.......2006-06-11

I borrowed this album off a friend who played a few tracks for me. I mostly hung around the opera bit which are hilarious! But then I started actualy listening to the songs. Every song on this album is fantastic! They are all in my favorites but this is my order.

#1 All That Is Good, it took time for this album to sink in as my favorite.

#2 Dandelions, this was my favorite but it got old after about 10,000 listens.

#3 Sweet Talkin Woman, brilliant cover of ELO's masterpiece

#4 The Untimely Death Of Brad, realy strange lyrics, and afterwards leavs you bewildered, the way i like it :-).

#5 One Girl Army - this is a good song, it's just overshadowed by Dandelions.

#6 Get Your Riot Gear - this track has a very swing style of music, i loved it at first but now is dated.

Amazing cd, why four stars? Well it's a shame that the number of tracks that actualy had effort put into them are few. but the opera, "When I Go Out," and the Kingdom of the Dinosours are Hilarious. This the perfect FIF newcomer album.

5 out of 5 stars FIF rocks!.......2006-03-11

This is definitely their best album, so if you like ska or are intrigued with the idea, this is a great buy.

5 out of 5 stars Best showcase of FIF's sound.......2005-09-03

It took Five Iron a while to figure out how to make good studio recordings, but I think this album is where they finally get it right. The energy and excitement from their live shows makes a strong showing on this album, with only a little studio degredation. Besides just being an excellent recording, some of FIF's best songs are on this album, namely One Girl Army, Dandelions, and Get Your Riot Gear. Overall, it's just an EP, but you get alot for your buck here: Good ska and a Christian band that gets it right. If you're new to FIF this is the place to start.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite FiF cd!.......2005-01-07

I love everything on this CD.
My Evil Plan to Save the World: Great lyrics and great tune make this a instant hit. 9/10
All That is Good: I LOVE THIS SONG! It speaks so much to me. I love everything about it 10/10
Dandelions: Slower than the previous two tracks, but just as good. Great lyrics and tune make this track a winner. 9/10
One Girl Army: Another great song, the lyrical style changes dramatically once the chorus starts. 8/10
Sweet Talkin' Woman: A great Electric Light Orchestra cover. In my opinion, better than the original. 8/10
When I Go out: The first time you hear this song it will leave you confused. I had to listen to it a second time, and than I started laughing hysterically. 8/10
Get Your Riot Gear: LOVE the lyrics. The tone is very different than the rest of the cd. 9.5/10
The Untimely Death of Brad: A really good song with strange lyrics: 8/10
These Are Not My Pants(all versions): Really funny the first couple of listens, but gets old. 7/10

I love this cd. I try not to over listen it, but its so good!
I would recomend this CD to anyone who likes Five Iron Frenzy, or a first time listener.

3 out of 5 stars Impressed me all throughout the CD.......2004-10-01

I abslolutely love Five Iron Frenzy since their first cd ,Upbeats and Beatdowns, and they have always impressed me.. The only reason why I didn't give it more stars is because this one was only an EP and it had several good songs on it! The bassist I must say is also amazing and they have pulled it through all the way!

5 out of 5 stars Don't Sleep on this.......2007-06-30

This is in response to those reviews that have been bashing this CD. Seriously, we must be listening to different records here. Let's get this straight...First off, this album is a classic. If your'e a true Quence fan than you will agree with me. Consequence has a different sound and brings back what real hip hop is supposed to sound like. For the Kanye Riders...let me give you a little bit of history. First off, I love Kanye, but Consequence doesn't sound like Kanye, it's the other way around. Ye sounds like Quence. Quence used to write for Ye...and yes they sound similar, but they are both hot. I met Quence a few times at some networking parties and at the hip hop festival, and he's the nicest guy. Real Humble.(Yo Quence this is DAVE aka J-RE)Give this cat a chance...He's trying to bring back authentic Hip Hop so let him do it, If you dont like this album, that's your opinion of course, but don't sleep on it, it definately is a hidden classic.

4 out of 5 stars (3.5 Stars) Just A Little More Tweaking..........2007-06-26

We finally get the chance to hear a real album by Queens own Consequence, the same guy that was plastered all over A Tribe Called Quest's album Beats, Rhymes and Life featuring his cousin Q-Tip. Sure, he had a mixtape album back in 2004 called Take 'Em to the Cleaners that few even knew existed. But this was easily the best time for Consequence to come out with his album considering Kanye had to prove himself as a mega-producer, artist, and business man. Once the foundation was created and Kanye started up G.O.O.D. Music, everything was a go for Consequence (his momma named him Dexter Raymond Mills, Jr.) to release his first official album titled Don't Quit Your Day Job. Without question, the production on a majority of the album was on par, so it all really came down to Consequence to deliver on his rhymes. "Callin' Me" is an decent track, but doesn't come close to the overall sound of Don't Quit Your Day Job. "Job Song" focuses on Dexter's thoughts on doing something bigger and better with music once he gets through the whole 'getting by' phase in his life. "Don't Forget Em" is easygoing song, stressing the importance of embracing your past and remembering what got you where you are today. "Uptown" has a good bounce to it, the respectable "The Good, The Bad, The Ugly" features mentor Kanye West, and the laid back "Feel This Way" features John Legend in rare form. "Disperse" is another standout cut that features Gangsta L Crisis (better known as GLC) and Really Doe, while "Who Knew My Luck Would Change" speaks to his thoughts that his career in music was bleak and nobody would ever check for him after all these years. There are some flaws on this album however like the strange "Night Night," the unconvincing hardness of "Uncle Raheim," and the over-the-top production on "Grammy Family" with DJ Khaled, Kanye West, and John Legend. Consequence still show his worth with Don't Quit Your Day Job, and that's what matters when it comes to longevity in the rap business.

4 out of 5 stars Thanks For Quitting Your Day Job.......2007-06-23

Consequence's "Don't Quit Your Day Job" is by no means a classic, but it is one of the few hip-hop albums that I have thoroughly enjoyed so far this year. The beats are not mind-blowing or complex, but they are catchy and they suit Consequence's delivery very well. The lyrics are honest, fresh, and not gimmicky. There are several great songs on here, though the few average tracks keep this from being a 5-star review.

"Job Song" is a great introduction to the album, setting the stage for what the rest of the album will be like. "Don't Forget Em," a song about not shunning your roots after hitting it big, is one of the strongest tracks on the album and likewise was made a single. Production like the one on this song is what makes me appreciate this style of hip-hop, best represented by feel-good beats with an old school style.

"Uptown" is easy to listen to with its simple beat. Kanye West makes an appearance on the standout "The Good, The Bad, The Ugly." Consequence's flow is outstanding on this track. "Night Night" is a filler track that doesn't do anything for me. The next song, "Pretty Little Sexy Mama" is mellow and a little better.

The next three tracks are average to slightly above average, but nothing catches my ear. The album picks up again with the swagger of "Grammy Family," with Consequence again showing his ability to rap smoothly over a big-time beat.

The album ends with the mellow and soulful "Who Knew My Luck Would Change," one of my favorites on the CD. Consequence's lyrics tell an honest story about his path to where he is now. Overall, this is a very good, possibly under appreciated album for 2007.

5 out of 5 stars Sick Flow, Tight Beats, What more could you want?.......2007-05-19

This is a hot CD. Quence's flow is straight ill. All the production is top notch. The album tells a story, which I absolutely love. If you're looking for hip hop with more content than artists like MIMS and Rich Boy, check this out. This IS what hip hop is about. Well worth buying.

2 out of 5 stars Dissapointment.......2007-05-14

I thought for sure Kanye West would give this the same time and hard work that he gave Common's BE. I was wrong.
The good the bad and the ugly has been out for 4 years already. Pay for the flight wasn't even on this CD. What a dissapointment! Grammy Family? Please! That was released last year already! Cons, do you think we are stupid? C'mon, man!

3 out of 5 stars Great CD, Horrible Picks..........2006-04-29

This is a great movie with a GREAT soundtrack, and THE ABSOLUTE BEST let me say it again BEST TRACKS ARE LEFT OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The Shootout In Stacy's House, the part where Zorin picks up stacy and bond grabs on to the rope and goes for a ride over San Fransisco are just two examples of the great pieces. My advice...WAIT...yes...wait for the RE-REMASTERED version to come out(if they make one which I bet they will). If you are impatient then try to get one REALLY CHEAP.

2 out of 5 stars Good, but missing important parts.......2005-10-21

In "A View to a Kill," Barry is in fine form, including many instances of the exciting themes we associate with 007 movies. To me, the highlight of the movie was tracks where Barry mixes traditional Bond thematic elements with tunes based upon the Duran Duran theme (such as the Wine with Stacy cut). However, the album to me and others is rather disappointing, as it is missing important parts of the score. Others have mentioned Bond's arrival at Zorin's estate, Stacey's arrvial, the Fanfare, and Bond dangling from the Zorin Airship. Personally, I was looking for the music from the State Office Building rooftop scene is my favorite cut from the movie, the main reason I bought the album, but that is also missing from the Soundtrack CD. I imagine if Capitol Records ever comes out with a more complete soundtrack album from this movie, there'd be a high demand for it from fans like myself, but don't hold your breath.

4 out of 5 stars Great album...but it's missing a few pieces.......2005-09-29

A View to a Kill is a great score from the legendary John Barry, who has done pretty much all of the James Bond films up until 1989. I wish he'd come back and do the score to the next James Bond film. A few pieces of music are missing though from the movie, such as when Bond is attacked in Siberia and escapes but they never finish the music. Another piece missing is where Bond and Tibbett arrive at the Zorin's chateau in France. I think the most important piece that's missing is when Stacy gets taken by Zorin for a ride in the blimp and Bond hangs on to the rope going to the Golden Gate Bridge. The music that leads to the climax is always important! The best part of the album is that the music is very much James Bond and incorporates, at the time, a more modern theme to the music. Duran Duran's song is still awesome to this day and can still hold a candle to any crappy song out there today! Overall, a great job well done!

4 out of 5 stars Great entry in the Bond scores...still mssing great tracks.......2003-05-13

While this score is one of Barry's greaat masterpieces, and is now even better remastered, it is still missing crucial tracks, like Bond's arrival at Zorin's estate, Stacey's arrvial, the Fanfare, and Bond dangling from the Zorin Airship. I hope in the near future, the albums will be released again with the missing tracks.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully mastered, and one of Barry's Best Bond Scores.......2003-03-10

John Barry has written some of the most beautiful and memorable film music ever composed. He is most noted, however, for his work on the James Bond movies. Other composers have succeeded him, but none have duplicated the magic that he brings to the Bond films. Along with "On Her Majesty's Secret Service," this album is a seminal example of his work; it features some of the most exciting music written for the Bond films. The moment I heard the themes in the movie, I committed myself to finding the soundtrack on CD. I am disappointed that the score is not extended, but the included tracks do very well in representing the overall themes in the film. In addition, the remastered edition makes much better use of the surround channels. The Japanese import focused too much on the center channel. The new mix spreads the orchestra to the left and right, providing the effect of a much fuller sound. The sound is even detailed more. I took a chance and bought this soundtrack a second time in the hopes that the sound quality was improved. It is an understatement to say that I was not disappointed.

Album Description

Another exciting piece of history from one of The Big Apple's meanest, creepiest and uncompromising bands ever. As with the Various Failures triumph, 'Filth/Body to Body, Job to Job' collects material from one of the band's golden eras, a time when bands like Swans and their contemporaries such as Glenn Branca and Sonic Youth could barely get library cards, let alone featured on the covers of magazines to which they are accustomed today. Packaged in a deluxe embossed chipboard digipack with booklet. Young God Records.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars 'Flex Your Muscles'.......2007-01-14

Swans could only have come from New York, no other city other than Berlin could have produced such a glorious cacophony of unrelenting brutality. For me Swans rests somewhere between real industrial (not 90s industrial metal) and noise-rock. Their only peers would have been Glenn Branca, The Butthole Surfers, early Sonic Youth (who were more song based) and Einsturzende Neubauten. On `Filth' they use repetition to exhilarating effect slowing everything down to a virtual crawl. It's difficult to describe this album but know one thing: nothing produced before or after it can match it in the brutality stakes. Like a wrecking ball it demolishes your weak mind while never overstaying it's welcome. This release also includes plenty live material as a bonus, which is where one can really feel the power and beauty in their destruction. `Filth' is as the title would suggest an ugly beast of an album that will beat you and leave you paralysed on floor simply because it can. This release in particular is one of my favourite albums of all time and life without it would be incomplete. Strong medicine indeed and highly recommended. Swans were in my opinion one of the greatest bands ever.

5 out of 5 stars This record has so many number one dance hits from back in the day on it..........2006-10-11

No, seriously, what's there not to love about Swans? Personally, I cannot get enough of them whether it's the early days or the later days. This is the album that started it all and it left behind a reputation that will make Swans infamous for decades yet to come. This music is simply HEAVY, and I mean it "that" way. Forget these slow doom metal and drone bands; Swans will engulf you, beat you, drag your bloody pulp of a body against the floor, and rape your rotting carcass. If that is your kind of thing, then obviously this album is a winner. There are no conventional rock structures here, but don't let that fool you... this is rock in its most pure and shocking form. It's a real pity that Michael Gira never hit the charts with any of these songs because, really, these songs are just totally danceable. If I was throwing a party I would definitely throw some Swans on... Not necessarily to freak everyone out, but to get everyone moshing. Of course, you should know that Michael Gira hates that kind of behavior. In actuality, he would rather have you brooding around your crummy apartment drunk while listening to this record. But, who can blame him? This music is true art. There are no compromises; it's punk rock in essence. It has the old school do-it-yourself mentality that you simply cannot find in the shallow and vapid bands that come out nowadays.

Swans are simply for people who want challenging, yet rewarding music.

5 out of 5 stars Must listen.......2006-04-26

Angry, dark, brooding, sludgy, this is the equivalent of a heavy duty sledge hammer crushing it's mass on the head of the mainstream.

5 out of 5 stars Sewage!.......2005-07-22

SWANS sound like they've just climbed out of the sewer and haven't washed up yet. This analogy works especially well when discussing their very early work, namely "Filth." The first words that will come to mind will probably include "heavy," "sludgy," "ugly," and quite possibly "filth." If you're an adventurous listener, and tolerant of an oppressive, miserable, hellish atmosphere, and believe that noise and screaming can be musical, your words might also include "very cool."

"Filth" is really not that unlistenable. The grating noise and dissonance will be off-putting to many, but when it's placed in the framework of steady, pounding, almost catchy industrial rhythms, as it is here, it seems at least partially tamed and ultimately tolerable if the listener is patient with it - and Swans is a band that demands much more attention than it's gotten. They are true innovators of heavy music, from grindcore to death metal to noise rock, and carved a truly singular niche for themselves in the post-punk/alternative world. Combining the depression of Joy Division with the anger of Throbbing Gristle, and the repetative power of both bands, then adding the messy, slow noise, growled vocals, themes of power and degradation, and wrenching two and three note riffs that were to become their trademark, Swans make a noise that effectively depicts a very dark and murky worldview. All underground music fans owe it to themselves to investigate immediately. Listening to Tool, NIN, Slayer and other popular outfits is fine, but to be truly hip I think you need to know the whole story.

The album begins VERY strongly, with a blast of feedback, a grumbling bass riff, and a powerful, menacing industrial rhythm. They are the backdrop for a roaring guitar drone and Michael Gira's repeated commands of "Flex your muscles" and "Be Hard" in an increasingly loud and angry growl. The song, "Stay Here," is a perfect kickoff for the set, combining everything about the album that is great: the ever increasing intensity, the dark lyrical themes, the massively heavy sound, and the uncompromising brutality. Among other highlights: "Big Strong Boss" approaches Danceability but before reaching it is very suddenly cut off, in an uncommon moment of Swans' gallows humor; "Blackout" showcases Gira's vocal chords getting a workout with loud, raspy growls; "Freak" is a rare break from the slow tempo and sludgy riffs, experimenting with tape loops and Gira's yelled ramblings about murder; "Weakling" gets into Einsturzende Neubauten-ish territory with metal percussion and groaning guitar drones. All of this music is actually a lot of fun, and with a little imagination from the listener - catchy. Of course, these aren't singalongs, they're "roaralongs."

Check this band out. You know you're interested. NOTE: The edition of 'Filth' that Amazon has released also contains a CD of collected Swans tracks from the 82-84 period called "Body to Body, Job to Job." Very good, but I don't have time to review it right now.

5 out of 5 stars "Aggressive beyond words....".......2005-05-31

is how Filth was described by a prominent reviewer when it came out in 1982. This is the most utterly brutal, punishing music I've ever heard. At the time, there was nothing quite like it though there have since been many attempts to emulate the sound (most notably Helmet and early Neurosis). A great album from a great band. The other disc, Body to Body is insanely good too, PURE EVIL unfiltered hatred and loathing. The thing to keep in mind about the early work of SWANS is that it isn't necessarily an endorsement or celebration of negativity but rather a statement about it and maybe even an attempt to exorcise it through the cathartic effects of the music.

5 out of 5 stars Phenomenal.......2005-07-11

Undoubtedly one of the best contemporary classical works. The Violin and Piano Sonata is in itself worth the price of the CD. The grace of this music perfectly reflects the optimism and progress in late 19C-early 20th century Western civilization. No composer since has captured the magic of classical music as Franck has done.

5 out of 5 stars Great Music by a Great Composer.......2003-08-21

Cesar Franck (1822 -- 1890)was born in Belgium but spent most of his life in France. For much of his career, he was a church organist and professor of organ at the Paris Conservatory. He wrote music from an early age. His early works consist mostly of piano music or works for the organ. But he discovered himself as a composer only in the last decade or so of his life. During this period, he wrote in many musical genres (typically only a single work) and produced a small number of lasting masterpieces. His work is heavily influenced by late Beethoven, Liszt, and Wagner. It is late musical romanticism at, I think, its best.

This 2-CD mid-priced set, "The Best of Cesar Frank" lives up to its name. It consists of many of the masterpieces of Franck's late years in a variety of forms. It is a convenient way to get much of Cesar Frank's music, well-played, in a single set. It includes a symphony, vocal music, organ music, music for piano and orchestra, and a work for solo piano by a variety of musicians. The CD will repay repeated hearings and give the listener a good exposure to Franck.

The most famous work on this CD is Franck's "Symphony in D minor"
which was first performed in 1889 and presented here by the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra conducted by Willem Van Otterloo. This is a fine performance of a much-beloved symphony. I found it emphasized the romantic, passionate character of the music with its frequent changes of tempo and mood.

But other selections on this CD I enjoyed substantially more than the symphony. Franck's greates work is probably his violin sonata in A which dates from 1886. It receives an outstanding performance on this CD from violinist Arthur Gumiaux and pianist Istvan Hajdu. The violin sonata is in four movements, which develop aspects of the same underlying theme ("cyclic" composition, typical of Franck). The music is glorious, elevated and lyrical throughout, in contrast to most of Franck's music which emphasizes contrasts between serenity and passion. The first and third movements are slow and reflective while the second and fourth are faster. The climax of this work, its final movement, is intense, reflective, and joyous all at once. It is based upon the same theme that Beethoven used as his main theme in the finale of the cello sonata in A opus 69.
Frank's work (and Beethoven's cello sonata as well) is one of the high watermarks of chamber music literature.

I also was much taken with the "Prelude, Choral and Fugue" for solo piano. This work dates from 1884 and it is performed here by pianist Eduardo Del Pueyo. This was my first exposure to this work, and I loved it. It consists of three movements which combine, to my ears, a romantic style, featuring long passages of broken chords and lyrical melodies, with baroque contrapuntal writing. I found this piece and the violin sonata the highlights of this fine collection.

Franck wrote extensively for the organ and this CD features his "Piece Heroique" which lives up to its name together with two other late and deeper works, the Choral in B minor and the Cantabile in B that are much more intense and reflective in character. Listeners who are unfamiliar with organ music, or with organ music beyond Bach, may enjoy exploring this music.

The CD also includes a lovely vocal piece "Panis angelicus" , Franck's "Variations Symphoniques" for piano and orchestra, and a Wagnerian tone poem "Les Etolides" all of which are well performed here and worth knowing.

Franck is an inspiring figure to me in that he persevered, stayed within himself, and produced some undoubted musical masterworks near the close of a long life. This disc is a fine way to get to know his music.

Listeners who wish to hear more of the best of Cesar Franck beyond the selections on this CD might enjoy his Piano Quintet in F Minor (1880) and his String Quartet in D Major (1890).

The Sonata for Piano and Violin is the most beautiful piece of music I have EVER heard. especially movements 1 & 4. The Symphony (Disc 2) is merely outstanding. Either of the pieces is well worth the entire price for the collection.
