Imagine a loose consortium of musicians who combine the lilting melodies of the Zombies with the driving hooks of the Kinks. Sure, it's what all the kids are doing these days, but Vancouver's New Pornographers are one of the few--along with the Shins--to get the balance right. Their third full-length offers more of the same smart power-pop that made Mass Romantic and Electric Version instant classics, plus some surprising new moves. As singer/songwriter Carl Newman (The Slow Wonder) has noted, "You can't play ebow without sounding like Eno," and indeed, Brian Eno's sublime early recordings are evoked on this more introspective offering. There are also strong new vocalists joining Neko Case: Nora O'Connor (the Blacks) and Newman's piano-playing niece, Kathryn Calder. If there was a flaw with previous efforts, it was that the contributions of Dan Bejar (Destroyer), fine as they were, sounded somewhat out of place. Just as they're better integrated this time around, Twin Cinema offers every member of this insanely talented ensemble the chance to shine. --Kathleen C. FennessyAlbum Description
The third album from Vancouver's pop maestros continues to feature Neko Case and Dan Bejar (Destroyer), as well as new vocalists Kathryn Calder and Nora O'Connor. These songs veer more toward the rocking and the personal than the sugar of earlier works. Chief singer/songwriter A.C. Newman has absorbed not just the mechanics of classic songwriting, but the heart, while indulging his admiration of demented current bands like Fiery Furnaces and Frog Eyes. Expect to hear influences from The Moody Blues, Tubeway Army, Wings, Eno, The Stranglers, 10cc, and other greats, all filtered through Newman's warped worldview.Customer Reviews:
Pure Pop Perfection.......2007-07-13
Neko Case is the icing on the cake, Im a huge fan of her solo work, and her contribution here makes the songs that much better. Do yourself a favor, pick up this cd and give it a few spins. Soon you wont be able to remove it from your cd player. And check out Neko Case's "Blacklisted" cd, the style is completely different from NP, but you'll be glad you did.

Not my cup of tea.......2007-05-29
So far above the fray it's almost unfair.......2007-05-16
The opposite of stodgy would be upbeat, and that's what "Twin Cinema" is, even on the slower tunes, which have a tendancy to transform to livelier jingles by the end. The title track begins the CD like a blast of fresh-air power pop, a feature many of these songs share. Yet the New Pornographers seemed to create this album with the knowledge that people like to download songs that suit their individual tastes these days. Thus, there is a diverse feel to the record, almost as if more than one band was involved in making it. The album is fluent throughout, yet diverse and creative enough to keep you on your toes. "Twin Cinema" never feels dull, because the tunes take unique turns every step of the way. The snappy songs are enhanced by crisp production, quirky lyrics and superb drumming, which might get a little lost amid all the ultra-catchy sounds.
Neko Case has the best female vocals in rock. Such songs as "The Bones of an Idol" and "These are the Fables" are nothing less than elegantly beautiful. "Broken Breads" sounds like Syd Barrett (see The Madcap Laughs) performing a tune in 2005. The vibrating guitars on "Three of Four" is pure swank, reminiscent of a few songs on R.E.M.'s Monster from 1994. The chorus on "Star Bodies" has the lushest-ever vocals by Case (double-tracked), for a sound that is irresistable. Finally, "Stacked Crooked," the last song, has the defiant sound of redemption, looking forward with a sense of hope and positivity, despite the screw-ups of the past: "Stacked crooked all along but now I'm on my way."
Who knows where the New Pornographers will take it from here, but it's hard to imagine they will ever top the brilliance of this album.

This recording is so unique that I've listened to at least parts of it almost daily since I bought it 2 months ago. Very diverse range of sound, great lyrics, and very well produced. I highly, highly recommend it.

The Best Soundtrack Ever Composed.......2007-04-07
A masterpiece for XX Century........2006-06-25
this not only music Score, this a symphony of the stars
Will outlast the movies, no question........2006-06-18
This music captures the essence of the story extremely well - maybe even better than the film itself. While the first disc moves extremely slowly, the music begins to pick up speed as things actually begin to happen in the film ("Tales of a Jedi Knight", track 8, is the start of the really engaging music). At the end of the first disc, you get the special treat of hearing the different takes of the original Star Wars scores (16-20). The first two takes were discarded, and the one we hear on disc and in the movies is a blend of takes 18, 19, and 20. Very nice touch, and interesting in terms of knowing the evolution of the music.
Disc two starts with a concert suite of Princess Leia's theme which is extremely touching, lots of strings/French horn. Then the rest of the disc, after "The Destruction of Alderaan" and "The Death Star/The Stormtroopers", is mostly action music, besides the music for Ben Kenobi's sneaking around.
The last several tracks are what many consider the crown jewel here, beginning with "Ben Kenobi's Death/TIE Fighter Attack" - a great piece of bombastic action music, accelerating into "The Battle of Yavin IV" (the pronouncement of the 'Force Theme' when Ben tells Luke to use the Force is still the most touching moment)and finishing with one of Williams's crowning achievements - that of course being the "Throne Room/End Credits" sequence, five and a half minutes of pure magic, and probably my most played track from this set. A reprise of this music could actually be heard in the 13-minute long end credits to Revenge of the Sith - it's a pity that Williams's didn't reference themes from other movies there, but the fact that he chose this one should tell you something...)
This soundtrack - with its myriad themes, cues, variations and all - this introduced me to film score music, and I honestly would not have had it any other way. It is dear to my heart.
-------------------------------
In 1977, Lucas thought that this was the only thing about Star Wars that he was happy with. This happens to be the only part of the movie that he DIDN'T change in 1997, so that should also clue you in. Get this now.
One note - if you have the spare change, get the scores for all three movies separately; not the 2004 Sony versions that are remastered, but the 1997 RCA/Victor versions. The tracklists are identical, however; the Sony packaging is much cheaper and DO NOT come with what I consider ESSENTIAL liner notes, which explains Williams's music, the way he uses various instruments and themes throughout, etc.
An Inspired & Intense Soundtrack for an Epic Film.......2005-10-06
Following the power of the main title, the music momentarily softens to a flute solo only to quickly crescendo once again as a rebel passenger ship is under attack from a powerful Imperial Starcruiser. With a blaze of laser blasts, the rebel theme is squashed by the power of the Imperial Attack music with the eventual entry of Stormtroopers and Darth Vader into the captured rebel ship. It is here that two robotic characters, R2-D2 and C-3PO, take center stage as they escape to the desert planet of Tatooine. The music that accompanies their long journeys across its arid surface is quite appropriate, followed by the Jawa mechanical-sounding march.
The music that accompanies the introduction of Luke Skywalker (played by Mark Hamill) at his uncle's moisture farm/home becomes his personal theme music throughout the film, but I prefer the more emotional theme music written for Princess Leia (played by Carrie Fisher). One of the most dramatic musical scores in the film is the theme that accompanies the destruction of the peaceful planet of Alderan, which was Princess Leia's home. This is similar to the theme used towards the end of the film during the final destruction of the Death Star, but some of the music in "Star Wars" was rather comical, such as the two cantina band songs on the planet of Tatooine.
Shortly after seeing the film in 1977, I purchased the complete "Star Wars" soundtrack when it was first made available on a dual LP album and loved to listen to it. Even years after the film was released many friends and acquaintances of mine also owned the film's soundtrack in one form or another. The film and its music captured the hearts and imaginations of millions of people and continues to do so to this day. The film would never have been as good without an impressive soundtrack, but thanks to George Lucas' selection of John Williams as the primary composer, both the film and its soundtrack will no doubt capture hearts and imaginations for decades to come. Therefore, I rate the dual CD soundtrack for "Star Wars: Episode IV--A New Hope" with a resounding 5 out of 5 stars and highly recommend it. Listening to the intensity and emotion of the music without simultaneously watching the film can be wonderful experience.

Wonderful Singer.......2007-07-21
Calming beauty.......2007-05-28
A beautiful voice.......2007-04-23
In the late 90's Koldenhoven began writing and producing her own solo recordings, including the adult contemporary Keys to the World, a gospel album called Free to Serve, and the Christmas album Heavenly Peace. This year she's back with an all new recording, entitled Infinite Voice, a collection of classically inspired compositions and new age arrangements of classics. Ms Koldenhoven's 5-ocatve voice is the only one featured on this recording, in some places layered to give a choral effect. Most of the instrumentation is synthetic, though several songs include acoustic instrumental performances from guitar, English Horn, oboe, flue, didgeridoo, and percussion.
Infinite Voice is a delicate and beautiful recording that will appeal to fans of light classical vocals from the voices of equally talented singers such as Filippa Giordano, Hayley Westerna, or Sissel.

Randy Newman (a back-cover subhead brags, our champ "Creates Something New Under the Sun," which, for once, isn't an idle boast) was near impossible to find shortly after it first came out, though it was a critical pet. The Southern California songsmith went on to score a few less-than-representative hits (it's so hard to deal with people who equate Newman with Jimmy Buffett because of novelty singles like "Short People"). He also created some masterful concept albums, foremost among them Good Old Boys. But the basic Newman template was laid down with this first full recording: elegant Copeland-esque arrangements soaring over morose though frequently hysterical lyrics delivered with a conversational mumble that owes a lot to Sonny Boy (Rice Miller) Williamson. The best track: "Love Story (You and Me)," which summarizes a lifelong relationship in three demeaning verses. --Steven StolderCustomer Reviews:

A Side Note.......2004-10-14
Newman is one of my favorite writer-composer-vocalists. From love songs to some of the most ascerbic and on-point social commentary, he has always been great.
Stage One Randy..........2003-01-12
The album does play more like an orchestral song-cycle than a pop album. The orchestra burgeons and swells during songs like "Love Song(You and Me)" and "Laughing Boy" to a point that is almost unsettling on first listen. Orchestra is definitely what this album is about, and it's used heavier than Newman ever would again (it's probably fair to say that Newman learned some lessons while making this album and balanced things out better on subsequent albums - he apparently fled in terror from it for his second album "12 Songs" which is almost devoid of orchestra - the orchestration on "Sail Away" is much more subtle and balanced than on this album).
A very notable absence is Newman's piano. On some of the tracks it doesn't even seem to be there. On others it's present but understated to an almost inaudible degree. Just compare the version of "Cowboy" (an underrated song) on this album to the version on "Randy Newman Live" to get a sense of how much the piano is drowned out. This is definitely not the case on subsequent Newman albums.
Piano or no, this is a very listenable and enjoyable album, but not recommended as a first exposure to Newman. He was clearly still developing his voice and style (his voice outright cracks on some songs, and seems weak at other times). Newman fans (like myself)will likely love every minute and not be bothered by the ever-present youth that pervades this album. We all have kinks to work out, most of us just don't do it so publicly.
There great songs on this album; "Cowboy" and "Davy the Fat Boy" are Newman staples. Some of the songs are of a lower caliber, such as "I Think He's Hiding" and "Laughing Boy." Most of the album is good, not great, Newman but it's easy to hear where he's going with his style. Despite the dominant use (some may say overuse) of the orchestra, this album makes a good starting point for Newman's ouevre.
Perfect Introduction; Brilliant All Round.......2002-04-16
The album starts with the somewhat frightening `You and Me', a story about a bland, typical marriage that spans an entire life. `I'll take the train into the city/you say you're plain, I think you're pretty/maybe if I'm not too tired we'll go out dancing/or we'll sit romancing, watching the `Late Show' by the fire." The bland verses suddenly leap into an orchestral, horrific chorus of "you and me, you and me, you and me babe, you and me, you and me, you and me babe..." This is the scarily satirical and ironic style of Newman, and the song serves as a perfect introduction to what he's all about.
There are many highlights throughout the album. `Living Without You' is a sad little dirge that plays like a ticking clock while a man yearns for his lost love; `Davy the Fat Boy' is the story of a `fat-boy' ("isn't he round?") whose parents die, so his best friend puts him in a freak show for all to see while he does his `fat-boy dance'. This heartbreaking little song is a cynical view of humanity and compassion. `So Long Dad' is the story of how children move further away from their parents, paying them only perfunctory visits: "what's new/do you still work at the drugstore?" and `I Think He's Hiding' kicks off what turns into a series of Newman's songs about God and Religion (he's an atheist himself, so they're not flattering songs).
Ultimately, `Randy Newman' serves as a great introduction to the work of the great man himself. It's an extremely good album: complex and subtle, with a variety of musical styles and instrumentations. The subject matter of each of the songs in the album also establishes the trend for his lyrics throughout his career, in their biting satire and cruel truthfulness. This is a must-have for both Randy Newman fans and newcomers to his music.

Album Description
Kate Winslet, Patrick Wilson, and Jennifer Connelly star in the latest work from Oscar-nominated writer/director Todd Field. Based on the novel by Tom Perrotta ("Election"), "Little Children" centers on a handful of individuals whose lives intersect on the playgrounds, in town pools, and on the streets of their small community in surprising and potentially dangerous ways. Features music from Academy Award nominee Thomas Newman, whose extensive work in film and television brings a unique orchestral style to the film's score.Customer Reviews:
Themes for Suburbia.......2007-07-09
In the case of this movie, the score begins with a strong sense of everyday life -- comfortable themes with humor and heart, and only a slight undercurrent of something strange going on just beneath the surface. As we progress to 'Its Wrong and Its Weird', 'Weekends Were Difficult', and 'A Sniff or Two', the stories beneath the story can be heard, while there are still islands of peace to be found in 'Pool Days' or the simple three-note cues of 'Little Children'. And finally, the beautiful 'End Title' wraps it all up in a neat, if surprising, little 8-minute bow.
Despite mostly short cues and very simple orchestrations, somehow Newman's music for 'Little Children' captures facets of the story and of each character with elegance and with charm. It is a very personal score in ways, lacking the clever tone of other Newman scores like 'American Beauty' and missing out on the drama of 'Shawshank Redemption' or 'Green Mile'. 'Little Children' is a simple story, and Newman sensibly keeps his score simple as well -- eloquent and beautiful in its simplicity.
Not bad for less than 40 minutes of music. Not bad at all!
one of his best yet.......2007-07-04
newman's music always favors atmosphere and mood rather than trying to tell a musical story, ala john williams. this kind of music puts you into a deep mood very quickly. one that envelopes you and wraps around you and won't let you go until it's over. it is slow and brooding and thought-provoking. this album incorporates many strange instruments that are placed over each other in layers until it builds a dense yet subtle wall of atmospheres that will quickly evoke emotions out of you. i really can't describe it any more than that. just listen to the samples if you haven't seen the movie and do yourself a favor and buy the album.
Bandshell.......2007-06-03
-The highlight on the album for me is fantastic "Bandshell" track. I think it's for the gorgeous shot in the movie when Brad is watching the kids skate in slow motion. It starts off in an almost comedic way with pizzicato strings then the bowed strings kick in playing a very peaceful tune that just warms your heart. Newman also throws in a skittering piano around the 45 sec. mark which always reminds me of Danny Elfman for some reason. He also throws in some synths and it actually works in this case and blends in nicely with the strings instead of standing out or giving one a headache.
-Other great tracks include "It's Wrong and It's Weird", "Lucy", "Pool Days", "Mae", "Be a Good Boy" and of course the fantastic "End Titles". "It's Wrong and It's Weird" accompanies the first sex scene and Newman absolutely nails the whole odd nature of that scene. The two characters are glad they're doing it, but at the same time feel weird and the music captures that weirdness very nicely. "Lucy", "Pool Days" "Be a Good Boy", and "Mae" are all lovely string and piano pieces with some very cool other worldly synths thrown in there. They kinda remind me of Isham's stuff from "Crash" only Newman does it better :)
-The End Title music here is by far one of the best pieces of music I've ever heard in my 22 year life on this planet. It starts off simply with strings playing a simple melody and just keeps on growing for almost 8 minutes. Those familiar with Newman will recognize the string writing since it sounds like something out of "Road To Perdition", but his writing here although being familiar is fresh and my 2nd favorite cue on the album. About 4 minutes into it Newman adds some very beautiful woodwinds to compliment the strings and the occasional snare drum hit which makes for a very pleasing musical experience.
-The album whiles being for the large part excellent does have it problems and for me those were primarily the droning synths that just made no sense to me. Tracks like "Late Hit" just feature nothing but weird synths that don't play any particular melody but just drone and moan throughout the track without a purpose. "What's the Hurry?" also features the same problem. Don't get me wrong it works well in the movie when you're watching the weird little scenes that the music accompanies, but when you're just listening to it by itself it just doesn't work. Gets really irritating after a while and for me it stopped the album from being perfect for me. But hey that's my opinion, I'm sure others will love the use of it, it just wasn't my cup of tea.
-It's a fantastic album that if only it didn't have the annoying droning synths on a few of the tracks, would have gotten a perfect score from me. It's very relaxing and dreamlike, and has one hell of an End Title cue.

A fine selection from one of Nashville's great also-rans.......2004-02-14
The only downside of this disc is that none of his material on MGM (from 1958-60) is included, so there's an unfortunate gap of a few years... (Did he have a lisp then, too... or not??) Overall, though, this is a good collection for fans of hard country as well as the rootsier side of the Nashville Sound.

The thesis that a child's brain can grow from listening to music is inarguable. The science is somewhat simple: for kids hearing music, the real meal of the sound is its connections and structures, both of which teach the brain how to organize phenomena. Johann Sebastian Bach's music is a stunning study in this regard, thanks at certain points to his keenly built, pristinely laid out musical architecture and at other times to the mix of intricate detail and delicate gloss. With this collection, drawn from Columbia Records' vast vaults, you get the best of the gentle scenarios, beginning with "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" and extending to E. Powers Biggs's breathy organ on "Be Thou Art Near." Firecrackers pop a little more cracklingly as Lutz Kirchhof performs a pair of lute suites and Anthony Newman takes on a pair of the famed Goldberg Variations on harpsichord. At its most upbeat, this collection is still reserved and cautious, exciting enough to grab attention but not so much that the music takes over as its own isolated activity. It's strong but still fits nicely into one's routine. And even if a segment on this 78-minute disc isn't to your child's liking, it's easy to move on, as most episodes last less than 3 minutes. --Andrew Bartlett

The pristine tones and lilting melodies of the Celtic harp are immediately inviting. Celtic Harpestry, a companion to a PBS performance special, explores a sound both traditional and modern in a tasteful and evocative collection. This isn't a purist's album--half of the harpists aren't even from the Celtic isles, and among the album's old Irish chestnuts is "My Heart Will Go On," the love theme from Titanic. The otherwise-joyful Belfast Harp Orchestra tromp through the James Horner tune, almost pulling some subtlety out of its overwrought themes. Turlough O'Carolan, the blind patron saint of the Celtic harp, might wish he were deaf as well, if he could hear it. But the bard would be thrilled to hear the 12-piece BHO playing the traditional "Brian Boru's Set" or one of founder Janet Harbison's zephyrlike originals. Her "Earth, Water, Wind and Fire" elicits shifting textures and colors that belie their traditional roots. The song also exemplifies the ethereal side of the Celtic harp explored on Celtic Harpestry with artists like Rüdiger Oppermann. Playing a wire-strung harp accompanied by bass and keyboards, the German harpist soars through crystalline melodies whether he's playing traditional tunes or originals. The most traditional sound actually comes from the American players. Cheryl Ann Fulton gives a straight-up rendition of "Breton Medley," and jazz harpist Deborah Henson-Conant is refreshingly restrained, faithfully rendering "Londonderry Aire (Danny Boy)" and "The Minstrel Boy." Although Celtic Harpestry focuses on slow airs, there are robust performances here, including those by Máire Ni Chathasaigh's group and the harp and vocal duo of Sileas. Outside of the Titanic love theme, Celtic Harpestry is an elegantly wrought collection. --John DilibertoCustomer Reviews:
Celtic Meets Classical.......2007-07-12
This collection overlaps several genres. Celtic, classical and New Age meet in what may be the instrument most associated with classical melodies.
If you are a fan of Rap or Hip Hop, keep looking. If you want a hoedown, this is not going to be your cuppa joe. But if you are looking for something elegant - background music for a business or important meeting, for example - this is a wonderful, understated choice.
