A 20th Century Classic.......2003-02-22

Peter Maxwell Davies third symphony is a 20th century classic. Structured within four movements, the piece presents ontological and phenomenological aspects coded in a supple document with rich surface features. Modification of historical music gestalts is achieved through lean counterpoint, rich rhythmic development, and a well balanced range of sonic presents. Stepwise conjunct melodic fragments and quotes are reassembled in a matrice which presents disjunct aspects at the surface, with a note data set spread of Shepherd Tone proportions and mapping distinctions. The orchestration is one of the finest in the 20th century literature, especially notable are the pecuniary use of percussion, and a dazzling use of brass, well balanced by woodwinds and strings. A must have recording.
