5 out of 5 stars A MUSICAL WORK OF ART!.......2000-06-04

On many levels, Music to Paintings, is a tour de force, in fact it is overwhelming.

Unlike the mindless, repetitive "music-babble" of many modern compositions, or the over intellectualized music of others, the pieces here are intelligent and engaging. The 24 DeKooning Preludes are as varied as the paintings which inspired them. These preludes evoke many emotions, at times precious and jewel like, sometimes fierce and dark, often witty, and always surprising.

Another favorite of mine is Bacchus, based on a series of paintings of the same title. The piece begins andante and gradually builds to a wildly ecstatic crescendo. Bacchus, the god of wine and merriment, (who loosened inhibitions and inspired creativity) is justly served by this composer.

By far, the most complex composition, both artistically and technically is The Tomb of Hasegawa. This is one of the most extraordinary pieces of modern music I have ever heard. Several listenings are required to fully understand its depth and appreciate the complex sonorities.

The accompanying booklet (with reproductions of the artwork and descriptions of the pieces) is an invaluable source for understanding this CD. This CD is a must have!

    5 out of 5 stars A classic!.......2000-06-01

When I first heard this CD I was astounded by the power of the music and the virtuosity of the performances. Multidimensional and profound, the music reveals itself through repeated listenings, and the more I listened, the more convinced I became that this is one of the great recordings of twentieth-century piano music. This CD deserves to be classed with the recordings of two other twentieth-century pianist/composers: Rachmanninoff and Prokofieff!

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome - In a Class by Itself.......1999-03-09

For years, I've been amassing a collection of modern music and though I can't claim to understand everything on this CD, with repeated listenings, I have to admit, it surpasses anything I imagined. The depth, range and sheer drama alone are worth experiencing. I was skeptical of the reviews I read about it - "one of the most extraordinary recordings of contemporary music to emerge in decades" - etc., and I knew nothing about the composer, but this is one time when I was significantly surprised. It broadened my perception of art and has given me insights into new areas of classical music. I have hundreds of CDs and I can say that this may be one of the few recordings of modern music that lives up to its reputation. I highly recommend it!
