If you're at all interested in the "lesser" 18th century symphonists - especially the work of English composers like Wesley and Herschel recorded in the "Contemporaries of Mozart" series on Chandos, this will come as yet another revelation of just how much creative and often brilliant work has been lost in the shadow of Haydn and Mozart. Like Wesley and others, Marsh builds the J.C. Bach - Haydn idiom, but takes in many directions, incoporating snatches of hymns, slow marches and a heart-breakingly lovely Celtic melody in the slow movement of the concluding "Conversation Symphony." The acoustics and technology aren't quite up the the standard of the Chandos series, but the performers have that spontaneous excitement that come with bringing neglected msterpieces back to life. Let's hope that Olympic will do a re-issue, but for now these five copies are the only ones I've found on the web - snap one up and you won't be disappointed!
