5 out of 5 stars The Early Works is filled with passion and humbleness!.......2004-09-25

Don Francisco's "Early Works" are filled with a unique sense of passion and love for the Lord. The new albums by Don seem to be "modified" or "modernized" and do not seem to reflect the same spirit that encompassed Don in the earlier works.

I grew up listening to Don Francisco as a child. His music tugged at my heart strings so much that I became a Christian a few years ago. God showed me his love through Don's music.

The stories that he "tells" in each song are edifying because they show you various viewpoints and emotions that were most likely experienced in those times and in those situations.

Buy it today! You won't ever be sorry!

5 out of 5 stars A Great Collection of Don Francisco's Earliest Tunes.......2001-12-06

If you are like me, your favorite Don Francisco songs are on his oldest albums, all of which you have on LP records (not very practical for the car stereo). This CD takes some of Don's greatest hits and gives them CD sound quality but retaining the "old" style as on the LPs. Besides the well-known "He's Alive," this CD contains favorites like "Love is Not a Feeling," "Morning Prayer," "Jehoshaphat," and "There is No Condemnation." Of Don's collections, "Early Works" and "Signature Songs" are my favorites. The "Live" CD and the 2 recent re-recordings ("Beautiful to Me" and "He's Alive") are fine in their own way, but nothing can top the traditional style as done on "Early Works." I highly recommend this CD!

5 out of 5 stars Great teaching tool!.......2000-11-14

The Early Works album is a great source of music that I use in teaching dance, mime and drama. Don Francisco's storytelling style, and the poignant message in his songs make this album a perennial favorite that I keep on returning to for performance material. I have just bought my third copy, after having worn out the first two!

3 out of 5 stars Great Songs, but the Live CD is better........2000-08-03

My title sums it up actually. This is alot of the great songs. It is a old recording thought. I would buy the Don Francisco live CD rather. It is a double CD and the quality is better. Don also sang those songs with so much more fire that this recording. Just keep in mind that the live CD is not easy to get hold of. So if you find it just as difficult as I did, this is a good substitute. It is worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Great Grace.......2000-03-10

Don Francisco's music is very important in my life. Growing up I heard his earlier music, which is now on this cd. I wasn't a christian until a decade ago, and DOn was a part in leading me. I believe, without a doubt, that Don's music is God filled. If your a christian, and you love to feel God working through men in worship, this is an album to buy.

Album Description

What makes a wonderful song? My own view is that a great song is that magical combination of a good poem with good music, resulting in a whole that is greater than the mere sum of its parts. This is a collection of some wonderful songs of France, both "classical" and pop, dating from about 1800 through the 20th century. There are songs of nostalgia, playfulness, tragedy, loneliness, irony, and mystery, mostly involving love in its myriad guises. It has been an adventure -- exploring the nuances of the language and the music. I hope you enjoy listening to these songs as much as we have enjoyed working on and performing them. Eileen Mager.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars No no no no.......2005-02-07

Wonderful selections, but if we are looking for a beautiful voice this is not it. Screechy, forced, at times unlistenable. Sometimes we just have to no when to say no!

4 out of 5 stars A clever fusion.......2005-01-31

Imagine modern French chansons like Jacques Brel's Ne Me Quitte Pas or the well known Sous le Ciel de Paris performed in the style of Schubert lieder --- no percussion or elaborate instrumental backing, just a voice, singing in the traditional formal style, with piano accompaniment. That's roughly the idea behind Eileen Mager's recording of Classic French Songs.

It works well. The effect is not what one normally expects from French cafe music, but then, Mager includes songs by Debussy, Faure, and Satie, so it is to hardly surprising that the overall flavour is of a lieder recital. While Mager's voice is not the smoothest and most honeyed soprano around, and she uses falsetto for her upper range, nevertheless she hits the notes spot on, and the rough tones somehow suit the songs. Even as a lieder recital, one wants the hint of tobacco and absinthe when the song is about Mister Giorgina playing the accordion in a bistro with no name.

2 out of 5 stars Amateurish.......2003-06-29

I'm sorry to be negative, but I feel that the two previous reviews are misleading. They implied I'd be hearing some fabulous unknown here--but no, this is a charming program sung by a roundly second-rate artist. Mager's voice has an unpleasant raspy quality which is completely unsuited to classical song and perhaps to high notes altogether. There's also the occasional breathiness and pitch instability. If you're used to hearing Susan Graham sing Hahn and Janet Baker sing Faure, be prepared for a disconcerting experience. There's a reason this CD is not on a major label. Mager is somewhat more credible on the popular songs, however, and perhaps she'll concentrate on those in the future. The one 100% enjoyable and polished song on the CD is "Mister Georgina"--we want more like that!

5 out of 5 stars What a Voice!.......2001-09-28

Not knowing French but loving the country's music, I purchased this CD expecting to hear a culture of songs that could be added to my collection. I was not disappointed. Actually, I added a bonus to my collection because of the manner by which these songs were presented. The feeling of "being there" is in every song. From the intro of the sounds of Paris to the dancing in Piccadilly Square (a Frenchman's view of an English music hall femme fatale) ... accomplished by a single voice accompanied by piano.

What a voice! Eileen Mager's voice is whatever she wishes it to be ... early English, classical Italian, festival German, or seductive French. The range of her voice is from a rich deep contralto singing "Blues" by Ferre to an angelic soprano singing "Si Mes Vers Avaient Des Ailes" by Reynaldo Hahn. I was very impressed with her "Mister Giorgina" by Ferre.

Ellen Brown is a sought-after accompanist in all of Phoenix ... this CD displays the reason. She feels the music with the soloist.

I am looking forward to Eileen Mager's other CDs, "Christmas Treasures," "Vivaldi a Due Voce," and "Broadway: Love & Laughter," and I highly recommend to all who love an absolutely beautiful voice in their entertainment room this CD of "Classic French Songs."

5 out of 5 stars What a fabulous CD!.......2001-09-04

I loved this CD. As a matter of fact, my son and I listened to it seven times the first day. Why?

Because it's so interesting, and has such an incredible breadth of repertoire and expression--from the mischievous and boisterous "Paris Canaille" to the sweet, delicate and operatic "Le Bonheur Est Chose Legere"; and from the out-and-out coquettish fun of Satie's "La Diva De 'L'Empire'" to the dreamy joy of Duparc's "L'Invitation Au Voyage" to the anguish of Brel's "Ne Me Quitte Pas." I especially enjoyed hearing, in addition to Joseph Kosma and Jacques Prevert's "Les Feuilles Mortes" ("Autumn Leaves"), another song by the same composer and lyricist that is completely unfamiliar to American listeners, the deeply moving World War II remembrance called "Barbara."

Because it's gorgeous. Eileen Mager's voice has great purity and clarity of tone, effortless delivery. Her French diction is so clean that my five-year-old son can (and does) easily pick up and repeat even the French that goes at rapid-fire speed. She uses a broad palette of vocal colors; and her range extends from the lyric coloratura soprano to the bluesy alto. Ms. Mager and her excellent accompanist, Ellen Brown, work together as one; and Ms. Brown, who is also an arranger and who accompanied her on their earlier CD, "Christmas Treausures," adds a special touch of her own to the songs.

The accompanying CD booklet contains translations of all the songs (done by the singer herself, with the able help and counsel of French poet/librettist/teacher Michel Sarda), so listeners who don't speak French will be able to enjoy the recording as much as those who do.

One parting comment: Many singers dabble in genres other than their home genre, calling it "crossover." Unfortunately, many don't sound right in genres other than their own. But Ms. Mager is so comfortable and "right" in the various genres on this CD that it would be difficult to decide which her "home" genre actually is.

This is one of those rare compact discs in which the listener's finger will not get much exercise from pressing the Fast Forward button. Wayne Watson's career didn't begin with "Field of Souls", "Beautiful Place", or any of his songs from even the last 15 years. No, go back even farther. Go back to a time before there were giants in the land, before water-colored ponies could be seen on refrigerator doors, and before such times as these.

A Christian music enthusiast can do well by buying old greatest hits CDs even if the song titles aren't all that familiar. Because that's when you hear that song that you haven't heard in 15 or 20 years, the one that you loved so much when you first started listening to Christian music. Well, for me, this was one of those CDs. Some of the songs that were so familiar to me include:

"The Sacrifice":
Offer up the sacrifice
Creation set forth the call
One Holy sacrifice
One life to pay for the fall

"Love Found a Way":

Love found a way
And our hearts can hold
The price Love chose to pay
All hope was gone
Till Easter dawn
We are free because
Love found a way

"People of God":
We're the people of God
Called by His name
Called from the dark
And delivered from shame

"One Day":
One day Jesus will call my name
As days go by I hope I don't stay the same
I want to get so close to Him
That it's no big change
On that day that Jesus calls my name

Also on this album is the original version of "Touch of the Master's Hand". If you don't recall, that's the classic about the dusty, old violin and the auction. I think this version is far better than the re-recorded version found on the CD "How Time Flies". Don't get me wrong: that one's good, but this one's better. "Touch of the Master's Hand" is one of those songs you can listen to when you're feeling down, and it's a guarantee to bring you back up again.

But my favorite song on here is "New Lives For Old", which is a story song about a sad, old man who used to run a carnival until something happened that caused him to shut it down. Now, he stands on the old street corner where he used to sell tickets for his show, and he shouts out to the people that pass by...

New lives for old
Warm hearts for cold
Have I got a deal for you today
C'mon, step right this way
Get you new lives for old

...and the song ends with a both sad and wonderful conclusion.

This is one of the best compilations of Michael Card's music available. It includes three songs which are, otherwise, out of print: "Stranger On the Shore", "No Rusty Swords", and "By Your Name". Additionally, you have great classics such as "Love Crucified Arose", the original versions of "El Shaddai" and "I Have Decided" (same songs Amy Grant used on her "Age To Age" album), and "Jesus Loves Me (This I Know)", which does a wonderful job in reminding the listener that "it's not just the Bible that tells [us] so". If you enjoyed "Joy In the Journey" you will, without a doubt, love this one.

          Album Description

In Sweelinck`s sacred choral music, a distinction is made between the French-language Psalms, published throughout his working life, and the Cantiones Sacræ, settings of Latin texts, published in 1619.

          Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Another side of Sweelinck.......2007-06-01

Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck (1562-1621) is probably best remembered today for his innovative keyboard compositions, which gave rise to the fugue form and helped define the beginning of the Baroque era. Sweelinck's mastery of earlier forms is evident in his choral works, which have been captured in a series of recordings by the Netherlands Chamber Choir.

Sweelinck wrote more conservatively for sacred polyphony than he did for keyboards. This was somewhat inevitable since the Catholic Church began discouraging stylistic advances in church music during the mid-16th century. However, Sweelinck occasionally finds room to innovate within the restrictions of the genre. For example, declamatory sections of "Psalm 109" signal the trend towards the chorus-style singing found in early opera and sacred oratorio. At other times, Sweelinck seems to reach farther into the past than his contemporaries; for instance, the melismatic melodies found in "Yeux qui guidez mon ame" recall the style of Busnoys (c. 1430-1492).

The performance of the Netherlands Chamber Choir, under the direction of Paul Van Nevel, is quite impressive. The production values are a bit lackluster and uneven; the 1992 recording might benefit from a remastering job.

With these works, Sweelinck successfully aspires to the Renaissance ideal of conveying an otherworldly beauty through the interplay of vocal lines. For the most part, his achievements are well served here.
