4 out of 5 stars Richter recordings revisited.......2007-05-27

This is a masterful performance and I would recommend this release without reservation. However the NYTimes reviewed this as well as the other discs in this series by Decca and declared these as "new" releases. Not so! If you already own the Phillips series of "Authorized Richter recordings" you already own these performances.

Much of the repertoire here is new to Richter's ever-growing discography, notably 53 minutes worth of transcendent Liszt Années de Pelerinage excerpts, and a haunting Ravel Le Gibet. A live Beethoven Pathetique sonata proves more individual and arresting than Richter's excellent studio recording, as does this 1954 Weber 3rd Sonata to the better- recorded 1966 Philips version. Richter fans, however, will truly be floored by a whirling Ravel Alborado del gracioso and Rachmaninoff's Études- tableaux in E-flat, played better than humanly possible. Don't pass this set up! --Jed Distler

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Sviatoslav Richter at his best.......2006-10-09

"I detest analysis, which kills fantasy and which is the enemy of art...Enough with musical blah-blah; music speaks for itself."
- Sviatoslav Richter

Sviatoslav Richter was the greatest pianist of the 20th century. This is of course quite an audacious comment to make, considering the very same 100 years saw the likes of Vladimir Horowitz, Arthur Rubinstein, Alfred Cortot, and a host of other towering musicians and virtuosi, but let us consider the grounds on which this statement is built; Sviatoslav Richter was a fusion of formidable technique, innate musical and structural conception, breath-taking sonority and tone; he was a magician, a direct link between instrument and composer, unrestrained and yet forcefully controlled by musical instinct; his repertoire encompassed everything from Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier to the mysticism of late Scriabin, from Chopin to Hindemith, Von Weber to Prokofiev...in simpler words, Richter was the complete pianist, an astounding musician in the lineage of Liszt and Rubinstein.

Therfore it comes as little surprise that Richter will be cherished and remembered as one of the greatest Liszt interpreters who ever lived, and the historic recordings of excerpts from "Années du Pèlerinage" and "Venezia e Napoli" represented on this 2-CD set only reinforce his Lisztian stature - they are equal to his legendary performances of better-known masterpieces such as the Sonata in B minor, "Funérailles", and the "Transcendental Etudes", again blending awesome technical accomplishment with power and an aura of intense concentration typical of Richter...it is difficult to think of a better "Sposalizio", and the "Tarantelle" is flashy and colorful, conveyed in all of its Neapolitan splendor.

While the Liszt suffers from a somewhat mediocre sound, Beethoven's "Pathétique" Sonata in C Minor is a fountain of sonorous beauty and represents Richter's playing at its best. The Rondo is of stunning delicacy and élan, and the contrasts in the first movement are perfectly-balanced, combining both the light "cantabile" touch and inner depth which Op.13 calls for.

It is also interesting to note that this compilation of early Richter recordings offers both Liszt and Ravel, displaying the former's influence on the French composer's music. "Pavane pour une infante défunte" is one of those performances that never leaves the listener - just hearing it once carves a deep impression on the memory...the same must be said of "Alborada del gracioso" and "Le Gibet".

Three Rachmaninoff works are offered as well, the first being the E-flat Minor Etude-Tableau, Op.33/5, another the Prelude in C Minor (Op.23/7), and last but definitely not least, the Prelude in B-flat Minor from Op.32. The Etude-Tableau is played with a hint of sarcasm à la Prokofiev, grandly eloquent and sweeping, recalling Rachmaninoff's performance of the Presto from Chopin's Sonata in B-flat Minor. The Prelude in C Minor is always magnificent under Richter's fingers - it is the cold, unforgiving wind blowing across the barren Siberian steppe! The B-flat Minor Prelude, so chaste, so innocent, so melancholy, only leaves us hungry for more. And let us not forget - before we begin drooling and screaming for more Richter - Prokofiev's witty little "Gavotte" from Cinderella which closes this compilation quite nicely, a personal favorite of the pianist....Encore!

5 out of 5 stars Delighted.......2002-08-07

I purchased this set more than a year ago and left it aside thinking I had bought it by mistake having the material on other cd...

Only to discover it a few days ago:I regret I had not listened to it before!!

Every item is superb, especially the 'jeux d'eau'(much slower than the Newark version),and the 'au bord d'une source'

The Weber sonata sounds even better than other version(thought the Praga version is superb too). The bass D yields a spectacular effect.

The Rachmaninov preludes offer the 'live' sound and a very musical Richter

5 out of 5 stars Staggering piano playing, even by Richter's standards.......2000-10-12

What can I say? Two CDs-worth of previously unissued music from possibly the greatest pianist of the century at the height of his powers in some of his ideal repertoire AND IN EXCELLENT SOUND. Special higlights for me are the Liszt, especially "Vallee d'Obermann" and "Au bord d'un source", and above all "Le Gibet". Whew! I can't imagine a more haunting performance of this centerpiece of Ravel's "Gaspard de la Nuit" cycle. Why on earth didn't Richter record (or indeed play at all) the whole thing? He loved to tease us with the gaps in his repertoire, of course, but maybe even he couldn't see how to match the intensity he achieves in "Le Gibet" in the other two movements. What a loss....

As well as hurrying to buy this set, I also recommend that you consider a Richter disk on Praga which includes more Liszt and Ravel, including fascinating comparison performances of "Alborada del Gracioso" and "Valses nobles et sentimentales

        5 out of 5 stars Great Handel.......2005-11-20

I can pose two reasons why some might not like this:
        1. musicians and supporters who are against the use of non-periodic instruments. This is based on fallacious reasoning that can be analogized to playing PACMAN on an old atari since that is the only authentic way to do it. Pure silly posturing
        2. People that like a laid back elevator-music style of Baroque. This is predicated on the belief that Baroque by its nature is merely pastoral, tranquil, and delicate/beautiful. Maybe most Baroque can be construed that way but the whole reason that Handel and Bach do not fall into this category is why they are so famous today. This is also why Clementi and Hummel are not as popular as Mozart.

In any regards, this is the best Handel piano music I have ever heard and I am a huge lover of Handel's music (have also played a couple of the suites). Both pianists accent the polyphony and create interest in the music. Richter, as usual, brings intensity and movement in the music. These suites are not a benign collection of Couperin medleys but rather incorporate a fair amount of minor-keyed and tragic melodies. Richter is aware of this and brings it out to the open.
        All in all.... outstanding

5 out of 5 stars The best recordings of the Handel Suites.......2005-10-24

I adore these recordings which emphasize the improvisational aspect of these works. Not Handel's finest music perhaps but this kind of pianism could persuade you otherwise. The sarabandes are spellbinding in their slowness and the fast dances have an irresistable momentum:check out the gigue from No.12 which is hammered out with such fierce intensity!
I've also heard Keith Jarrett in some of these pieces and as is often the case with his forays into classical music he's rather too straightlaced.

5 out of 5 stars Recommended for Handel, Richter and Gavrilov fans.......2002-11-11

This is a live recording from the 1979 Tours Festival, Chateau de Marcilly-sur-Maulne, France. As such there is some occasional crowd noise and the sound quality is not what listeners accustomed to modern studio CDs may expect. Though there is no information about the piano used, to my ear it is a European instrument.

Richter's performances are simply superb. Each voice is present and well thought out. Gavrilov's tone surprised me as being a bit harsh, unlike his 1984 EMI recording of Bach's French Suites. Still, his interpretation is engaging.

For anyone studying the 1720 Handel Keyboard Suites or collecting Richter and Gavrilov, I consider this recording essential. It is an opportunity to hear Handel's oft-ignored keyboard works performed live. We are lucky to have this recording.

        2 out of 5 stars HORRENDOUS HANDEL.......2001-09-01

I couldn't agree more with reviewer Sobel, below, relative to these slap-dash interpretations. I, too, owned them on LP--- and was never quite happy, overall. The slow movements are tedious to the hilt, while aiming for the heartstrings, and the faster movements are done so "rapido" that it sets the head awhirl! Too slow, and too fast make for a poor mix. Throw in the fact that these are live recordings, with a sound that is rather hollow and clangorous, with an annoying brashness about it (probably stemming from the pianists' interpretations!), and you have a two-CD set that really isn't quality Handel. Keith Jarrett does, indeed, imbue these baroque masterpieces with the depth and dimension they deserve. His intimacy is spellbinding. Gavrilov and Richter merely irritate.

5 out of 5 stars Ever fresh and delightful music from the Great Mr Handel........2001-06-06

If Handel's vocal music is back in favour at present, then his many keyboard suites also have claims for the attention of modern audiences. Personally, I don't welcome a chance to listen to the ways Handel contrived to set two lines of a foreign language to six minutes of music. I delight in listening, however, to how he develops and extends the classic suite items - allemande, courante, sarabande and gigue, adding sometimes other items, and sometimes - and in the Second Suite - omitting all the classic movements. It is not be understood, mind you, that Handel planned and plotted each suite as a whole entity. Almost all of them are gatherings of pieces dating from his early composing years. He published the first eight suites when he was aged 35.

Pianists Sviatoslav Richter and Andrei Gavrilov shared live performances of all of them at a series of concerts given at the Tours Festival, France in 1979. Happily the recordings that derive from these performances are eminently successful, with little or no audible coughing and a life-like if sometimes fierce piano tone. Both pianists "voice" the linear part writing colourfully, in ways not possible when a harpsichord is used. Repeats are observed throughout. Making a belated and rosette-winning appearance on CD, these performances are conveniently spread across two double CD sets. Included in the second set, as a bonus, is a Richter performance good for all time if ever there was one - his 1961 Abbey Road Studio recording of Beethoven's "Tempest" Sonata.

        5 out of 5 stars Eroica Complete.......2004-11-13

This is from Karajan's second cycle (1962) and is regarded as his most successful. A powerful rendition of the Eroica. Tempo is just right - not rushed. Among the top 3 or 4 performances of Beethoven's best (author's opinion) symphony.

Symphony no. 1 is equally good, but the Eroica was my interest.

The recording quality is, as one might expect from DG, quite good.

5 out of 5 stars land mark play of Beethoven.......2001-01-19

Richter's playing always has a sense of undeniable rightness, especially in Beethoven. Although he is always a pianist who care nothing but the music itself, his playing in his late years reaches a status of maturity that it transcents, and almost no longer belong to the world. In this recording, everything is perfect- the rythem, tone control, and the structure and emotion balance. Even the idea that "imperfection is the essence of perfection" is embedded in his playing philosophy. The funeral mark is so emotional deep that it freezes everything and keeps one thinking. As it proceeds one is brought to a further step lower while every time one feels it is the bottom. As to Op. 111, there is no parallel, not even a close one. One moment the undescribable tempo move one's mind as well as his feet, the next the enormous regret and empty feeling sends one to the outter space, then at the last few notes one is saved by the ultimate humanity that only exists in Beethoven. After this record, one will feel there is nothing more profound than the 2nd movemen of the Op. 111, and only Richter in the existing recording can ever reach that level.

Mayber there is a better recording on Op. 111 - the Philips "authorized recording" of , again, Richter.

5 out of 5 stars Concentrated intensity; febrile purity!.......2005-08-18

Sviatoslav Richter experienced from the seventies a true style change. Behind in his sholuders remained the temest and febrile intensity of his "tour de force performings" in Sophia, Budapest, Praga, London, New York among others important cities. His performances are permeated of major concentration, wisdom and inner vision. He abandons the great halls and submerges into a true intimate atmosphere. He plays a notable all Scriabin concert on 24th October 1972 at Warsaw but he decides to play mostly a German repertoire. Schumann, Schubert and Beethoven capture his interest out of the Great Hall Concerts and many chamber works. Precisely he adopts Andrei Gavrilov as a musical son. His previous musculature playing transforms in quite sensitiveness and melodic breath, following perhaps his inner bliss, with the maturity you modify all your approach about life issues and artistic tastes. In this sense there is another remarkable example with Leonard Bernstein since he went to Europe in the seventies becoming wiser, being perceptible in every performance.

These historical performances date from 1979 recorded at 7th February at Tokyo Metropolitan Festival Hall and 24th February 1979 at NHK Hall and 1st February Tokyo Koseinenkin Hall respectively.

The Sonata D. 575 dates from 1817 and can be grouped with the A minor and E flat major sonatas (D, 537 and 568) as the end of the first period of Schubert. With visible Chopinian accent, presents interesting harmonic surprises and abrupt modulations without Coda. The Second movement evokes stylistics ambiguities. You can feel far echoes from Mendelssohn and a brief central episode with some dramatic flavour. The scherzo is full of enlivening contrapuntal detail. The final movement is filled with pastoral character and rustic music.

The Sonata D. 625 is an eruptive work in a visible approach to Beethoven moods. The Adagio is enrapturing with captivating spell and imaginative flight. The turbulent and enraged introduction are so enlivening that fit notably with the humble and tender second lyric theme in a glorious confrontation that foretell his late works. A true Sturm und Ruhe!.

The Musical Moments as you know have been with both sets of impromptus Op. 90 and.142 a magnificent evidence of the blitheness spirits and brief dark episodes that may be considered such a micro cosmos in miniature.

Go for this CD my dear reader. You will change your mind about the dense, overwhelming temperament and dazzling personality of this unforgettable keyboard legend.
