Here is a recording with real historic value--and it's entertaining as well. In previously unissued selections ranging from 1929-1944, Leopold Stokowski shows his flair for speaking to and charming his audiences as well as conducting some flashy and widely varied music. Included are works by Tchaikovsky, Richard Strauss, Schubert, Scriabin, Handel--and a curious little march by Stokowski himself. --David Vernier

4 out of 5 stars A great two-fer: too bad about the packaging.......2006-10-07

It pains me to give only four stars to a CD that contains the two best albums by one of my all-time favorite bands, but I have a problem with the packaging. I have both these albums on vinyl, but one of the discs is warped, so I bought this CD. The music sounds as great now as it ever did, but I was disappointed that they went with bargain-bin packaging here: no lyrics, no pictures (except for tiny reproductions of each album cover), no liner notes. Albums this great deserve better treatment, and I would gladly pay double the price for high-quality reissues that at least contained the original artwork and lyric sheets.

Having said that, I will now say that if you haven't heard this band and you like music that's in a similar vein (other reviewers here have described it very well), you do need to get this CD. Unlike most fans, I prefer "Tongue Twister," because I like the leaner, meaner production (by Richard Dashut, who worked with Fleetwood Mac). Both albums are packed with great songs, and there is really not one false note on this entire CD. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Great cd, but you won't be getting it for $17 anytime soon..........2006-07-18

If you are like me, you may have wondered about all the listings where a rare, collectable item that sells for quite a bit normally is supposedly available from Amazon for a much lower amount "normally delivered in 4 - 6 weeks" or thereabouts. Well, I'm here to tell you, they don't have the title and it doesn't appear to be on its way. I ordered several such items, including this great Shoes cd on June 2, just to see what happened. So far nothing... not a peep. All Amazon is doing is putting their legitimate selling and buying customers at an unfair disadvantage while tying up your money (in case they ever do ship it). If I had ordered from an Amazon Merchant, I could have been enjoying this cd for the last 6 weeks.

5 out of 5 stars What are you thinking?.......2006-04-23

Dear Seller:
Um, dude, we all know your high price for these albums is a total joke. I know Skip and Jeff; I drop in on them in Zion on a not-too-infrequent basis. Your price is for any of their CDs is insane, good as their music is--and it is good. What exactly are you thinking?

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding 2-fer, Present Tense was the record of '79.......2005-02-16

Shoes are one of those bands that you look at and just scratch your head, wondering "how did these guys not get huge?" Of course, fans in the know will tell you that Shoes were one of the best power pop groups of all time (in fact, in college I did a Power Point presentation on power pop music, and I focused on my "Big 5," of which Shoes were #4). One of the first in a long line of Illinois popsters who just don't get their due - there must be something in the water over there that gives these guys so much talent and bad luck simultaneously. Anyway, the first record by Shoes that was released was Black Vinyl Shoes, which is highly recommended but a bit less accessible. Present Tense followed, serving up an actual hit single (!) in "Too Late," a simply great power pop song any way you slice it. Of course the rest of the album is magnificent from start to finish, and as a guitarist I loved being able to throw this on and pick out most of the simple but catchy guitar parts. Tongue Twister followed, and admittedly sounds a bit thinner and more dated, but there's still a wealth of great tunes for your listening pleasure. Fans of softer Cheap Trick, Dwight Twilley, Emitt Rhodes, Big Star, and the Records would be doing themselves a real favor to track this down.

Best Tracks:
"Too Late" - Cool little riff leads into this lesson in power pop dynamics - even when the guitars kick in and start crunching on the chorus, the vocals stay soft and sweet.
"Your Very Eyes" - Should have been all over AOR/AC stations in the late 70's. Puts other soft rock to shame.
"In My Arms Again" - Really interesting song structure here - scaled back chorus gives way to an explosive, emotive outro. Great tune.
"I Don't Wanna Hear It" - An early example of pop punk, miles better than anything out today in that genre.
"Your Imagination" - For those who dig early Goo Goo Dolls tunes written by bassist Robby Takac, this will fit right in. Good lyrics, peppy and bouncy, a great kick in to the Tongue Twister tracks.
"When It Hits" - More power pop 101 from the masters. I just wish this track was a bit better produced.

5 out of 5 stars Gary Klebe is an angel with a broken throat.......2004-11-19

Overrated wunderhacks like Nick Lowe talked a lot of guff about pure pop for now people. Shoes actually went ahead and did it. Gary Klebe & The Murphy Brothers have more power-pop talent than Badfinger and Big Star combined. And the fact that they're less popular than the 12 or 13 Kenny Rogers impersonators currently plying their craft in Las Vegas only serves to make the underappreciation of Shoes all the more galling.

TONGUE TWISTER is definitely a meatier & beatier proposition than PRESENT TENSE. Frankly, I'm flabbergasted that PRESENT TENSE is preferred by Patrick Wilkins & Alfred Salas. "No synthesizers" is a liner-note bragging-point in regard to TONGUE TWISTER. Although some of those instrumental timbres sure sound synthy to me. (Not that there's anything wrong with that.)

Shoes have a great idiosyncratic gimmick at its disposal in the form of Gary Klebe's thin wracked voice. Gary can't help but remind me of a fictional character created by Franz Kafka: Josephine the singing mouse. Sing? "She can't even squeak". That's Gary alright. The power-pipsqueak whose voice is more pleasurable & poignant than a thousand Robert Goulets. Gary's ability to move me very deeply with that preposterously wimpy voice of his proves once again that anything is possible in the wacky world of professional entertainment.

Album Description

MAKING HISTORY--- "HARMONICA DREAMS"- HARMONICA DREAMS is the world's first smooth jazz harmonica CD. It is radio friendly and contains many commercial songs that have HIT potential while retaining artistic integrity. For those seeking an original voice and concept, this is it. There has never been a harmonica that has captured the sound of "Today" as this CD does Imagine if you could combine the harmonica magic of Stevie Wonder with the production/songwriting skills of Boney James, Dave Koz, Pat Metheny, or Spyro Gyra. This original mix results in a unique sound that instantly identifies the artist and his instrument- a quality surely helpful in today's market of confusing sound-alikes. It is co-produced by Claudio Spiewak, the brilliant Brazilian guitarist/producer who has performed with some of the top Latin acts and currently performs with Nestor Torres

5 out of 5 stars "the world's first smooth jazz harmonica CD".......2005-09-09

Review by Jonathan Widran
In listening to the veteran harmonica player's stylistically eclectic, dreamy and joyous debut--billed on the packaging as "the world's first smooth jazz harmonica CD"--a quote from Clifford Brown about the legendary Toots Thielemans comes to mind: "Toots, the way you play the harmonica, they should not call it a miscellaneous instrument!" While certainly not the household name Thielemans is, Singer has amassed an equally impressive sideman resume working with the best pop, country, Latin and Brazilian singers--from Blondie to Garth Brooks and Djavan! Only time will tell if this winning indie effort can break through the sax/piano/guitar domination of his chosen genre, but catchy, melodic tracks like the zesty samba "Rio Dreams," the reggae-tinged "Jamaica Jam" and soulful, laid back "Bells of Venice" would fit into the format perfectly. Singer shows his romantic side both instrumentally on the lush, moody "My Love" and later on a series of vocals, which are pleasant enough but limit his beautiful instrument to a quieter, supporting role. Although it's not the track most listeners will gravitate to, his best vocal is an eloquent, classically tinged revisit of Lesley Duncan's "Love Song,", first popularized by Elton John on 1971's classic Tumbleweed Connection. Perhaps Singer's biggest dream is that he can bring his instrument into a center stage role for both himself and others who, like him, master the beauty of it. This collection is an impressive first step.

5 out of 5 stars Swimming in an ocean of sound.......2001-03-10

The swimmer by Helms is an artistic masterpiece. I love the way the bass lines intermingle with the guitar and the drums pull you in, creating a sound that envelopes your entire being. The lyrics are thought provoking and sung in a kind whimsical tone with occasional eruptions of feeling. I love track 3 the smallest world in the world, the sounds that come out of the gutiar are unlike anything I have ever heard before, creating a beautiful image in your head. Track 6 starts off like a wave of sound. By chance I happened to see them play in Richmond, VA and I was instantly hooked. I bought the CD and have not stopped playing it yet. If you are looking for a new sound to carry you into the next level this is definatly it. Try it out I am sure you will love it just as much as I do.

Recording artist John Trones has crafted a smooth, gorgeous follow-up to "Forward" and "Holiday," his first two top-selling releases from Metropolis Music. "Romance" is a brilliant set of torch songs that explore the incredible joy and heartbreak of falling in love, leading the listener down a musical path that is both comfortable and intimate, yet brings a sexy new energy to some familiar lyrical classics. Trones' passionate tenor voice is intense, but venerable and wraps beautifully around Brickman's emotive piano, giving "romance" a rich ambiance that, once played, immediately welcomes you home. "Romance" features guest performances by Martha Mathewson, Dana Mathewson, Harry Pontiff, Joanna Jahn and Jim Brickman. Produced by John Trones and Jim Brickman.

5 out of 5 stars Music for a soft summer night.......2003-03-19

Artie's cds are the most-requested, as friends hang out on soft summer nights and this one pulled me through a long, cold winter. His vocals are smooth & easy. Payne's soprano sax, Cashdollar's slide guitar & Sebastian's harmonica just ooze southern spirt into the whole. If you weren't a Traum fan before, you will be forever after.

5 out of 5 stars South of Lafayette.......2003-03-17

Given Artie Traum's recent series of wonderful instrumental albums, it's natural to forget how sophisticated his vocal and lyric-writing skills are. South of Lafayette is one of those magical albums that blend terrific playing, sensitive lyrics and compelling vocals. Whether you purchase music for its overall sound, or - like me - you listen for every lick and lyric in the headphones, this is a must-have CD.

5 out of 5 stars Artie Traum does it again.......2002-08-15

I'm glad to see Artie finally did an album with vocals. His guitar playing is superb, but the lyrics and voice add a whole new dimension. Great CD! Buy it!. Enjoy it!

      Product Description

This release is the second in Cala's Stokowski series, following on from the highly successful Philadelphia Rarities (CACD0501), and it offers an unique opportunity to hear a number of unissued recordings made by Stokowski which have come to light in the archives. In addition, the maestro's voice can be heard on the first track, cajoling and enjoying a joke with the audience. The repertoire is fascinating in its variety and scope, ranging from a performance of La Marseillaise (complete with audience participation), to the Pastoral Symphony from Messiah in Stokowski's inimitable arrangement. However, the most important piece on the disc is undoubtedly the maestro's extraordinary performance of Tchaikovsky's Romeo and Juliet Overture, which underscores how effective an interpreter Stokowski could be.
