Leopold Stokowski is remembered as one of this century's greatest conductors. His art is currently being rediscovered, both by the reissue on compact disc of many of his finest recordings and by the interest taken by present-day conductors in the fascinating and erstwhile famous ''Stokowski Transcriptions''. By public demand, Cala has reissued an extraordinary collection of Stokowski recordings hitherto available only to members of the Leopold Stokowski Society. The recordings on this disc were made between 1929 and 1940. On these transfers from 78rpm sources, Cala has endeavoured to capture the essence and energy of the artists' performances while lessening the effects of the surface noises inherent in early shellac pressings.
