Note!!! This CD is NOT out of stock. It can be ordered from the Organ Heritage Society at ohscatalog.com. This is the fifth (of eight) featuring the complete organ works of Guilmant, the founder of the increasingly-popular French Romantic organ school. This movement is associated with Widor, Vierne and others. It's fame also depends on the instruments designed especially for it, in this case the spectacular organs of Aristide Cavaille-Coll, the so-called "symphonic" organs.

Unfortunately the one here is not one a CC organ but instead is a rebuilt instrument at the Basilika St. Kumibert in Cologne that was damaged in WWII. The reconstruction was not completed until 1963 and was "based on French principles"...close but no cigar. If the instrument is not entirely satisfactory then neither is the performance. Then again, I am judging against van Oosten and Marie-Claire Alain on Cavailler organs - combinations almost impossible to best.

A peculiar aspect of this collection is that each CD has a different performer which gives the reader a variety of styles but does induce artisti coherency. The first Sonata is exquisite in its use of the instrument. The Andante middle section is especially lush and beautiful. The third Sonata is considered the weak link of the octet and is rarely recorded. It seems to be of an older style though very "Guilmantish". The liturgical pieces cry out for an organ with more color and sonority.

A last complaint: The accompanying notes are transliterations, NOT translations, and as such are awkward and puzzling at times. This is true for each CD in the series that goes so far as to say "it" for "he" in several places. Have an English (or French) speaker review and correct.
