Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous Vocal and Choral Music.......2007-04-09

Sanford Sylvan is the perfect artist to interpret "Being Music" with his rich baritone voice and his exemplary diction. The opening line from Whitman is "Now I will do nothing but listen." That pretty well sums up my reaction as I've played this CD over and over. And "Specimen Days" to another Whitman text is a rich and quite wonderful setting. If you enjoy gorgeous vocal and choral music, I doubt you will be disappointed in the writing of Charles Fussell and the moving and lively interpretation of these artists.

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional Choral Writing and Text Setting.......2004-11-24

Charles Fussell truly understands the meaning of good vocal writing from both the choral and solo viewpoints. His setting of the Walt Whitman text is carefully crafted, yielding a very moving and poignant work in Specimen Days. I was present at both the Philadelphia world premiere of this work and the Boston premiere (where this CD was recorded) and this piece was warmly and emotionally accepted with standing ovations.

It is very refreshing to encounter a new work which embraces the choral tradition so well.

2 out of 5 stars Decent Performance, not so interesting music.......2002-03-20

Fussell's music offers nothing beyond the purely conventional. In specimen days, for instance, recitativo-like text setting and uadventurous harmonies and instrumentation make the musical discourse dull and uninteresting.
