Haydn's Masses have always been a source of controversy as liturgical music, even as they have enjoyed enormous popularity with singers and audiences since they were first performed in the early years of the 19th century. This Mass illustrates exactly why. The purpose of religious music, particularly Catholic religious music, is to illustrate and amplify the eternal truths of the texts. Haydn's Mass does just the opposite. Both the title of the Mass and the music--with its menacing drum beats just before the "Dona nobis pacem"--immediately root the religious experience in a specific time and set of circumstances. Musically it's all very exciting, and since we now treat these works as concert music more than anything else, there's no reason not to enjoy Haydn's impressively original and highly personal response to the text, particularly when the performance is as directly communicative as this one. --David Hurwitz

5 out of 5 stars A generous choice.......2007-04-06

This inexpensive twofer mixes perhaps the best work from London's 10-CD box of Haydn's complete masses recorded during the 1960s. With sparkling solo and choral singing and playing that was among hte best of its era, this set will provide insight into Haydn performance for collectors that only know his music through modern period practice performers such as Gardiner and Hickox.

Old Haydn style is clearly on display in David Willcocks' 1962 Missa in tempori belli, or mass in time of war or "Nelson" mass celebrating Admiral Nelson's victory over Napoleon at the Nile. Four and one-hald decades later this is still among the best versions of this music ever recorded. Aside from "The Creation", Haydn hardly penned a better piece of vocal music. Willcocks probably does not have a better recording to his name.

Another magnificent departure from today's period performance practice is George Guest's "Paukenmesse" and the way he features the kettledrum, espcially in the closing pages. Compared to the Gardiner period version, where the big drum is used less often and to less advantage, this must be considered a full throated attack in keeping with the composer's wishes.

The one shortcoming of the set is it divides the Paukenmesse over two CDs. This aside, no one will be disappointed with this set unless they are so dogmatic they can't set aside modern practice to accept instrumental and choral work that set a standard for 30 years.

4 out of 5 stars Good Choice.......2006-08-14

I ordered this just to have Harmoniemesse but was happy to have the other pieces also. It's a nice variety of vocal arrangements. Recording is clear and chorus is good, sopranos sounding like boys choir. Ending of some phrases loses pitch sometimes but not enough to offend a sensetive ear.

5 out of 5 stars Glorious masterpieces, glorious recordings..........2000-12-26

Deeply moving recordings of Haydn's awesome choral masterpieces. The conducting and singing are both impeccable and powerful, and London's acoustics are great. The soprano in the Nelson mass sings like an angel, and the organ shines through well. It was one of the earliest recordings to use Haydn's actual orchestration. The Nelson mass is available on a 24 bit CD in the Decca Legends series along with a great Handel Coronation anthem with the "God Save the King" chorus. Now back to this set... I love the kettle drum "military" portion of the Agnus Dei in the Mass in Time of War. The organ is quite charming in the Little Organ Mass, and the Harmonienmasse is sublime. The Teresienmasse is not included though.

If you like Haydn's masses, don't miss the powerful The Seven Last Words of Christ(not to be confused with Haydn's string quartet set with the same title), its finale will carry you beyond this world. Haydn's TeDeum is also quite magnificent.

5 out of 5 stars Harnoncourt understands the baroque principle `sublime`.......2000-01-11

And he fully exploits it. Haydn is the example of what a baroque musician should/could be, and from the thundering tympani beginning to the last `give us peace` I stand completely in awe of the demanding way in which God`s grace and peace is invoked here. Haydn does not ASK, he demands, claims it. Beautifully performed. Once again, long musical lines, extreme contrats, and the beauty of sound for once not the most important thing, but rather a confrontation with the listener. Harnoncourt at his best!

4 out of 5 stars Haydn's Paukenmesse.......1999-03-19

This is a wonderful recording of the Missa in Tempore Belli (also known as the Paukenmesse) of Haydn. (It gets the title Paukenmesse from its use of the tympani, or Pauken in German.) Nikolaus Harnoncourt does a wonderful job in conducting this great masterpiece of Haydn's. I thought that the tympani was a little much in the Kyrie, but it was fine, though.

The Salve Regina has much to commend it as well. This has quickly become a favourite recording. To all those interested in 18th century sacred music, this is a recording you may well want to acquire.

4 out of 5 stars Good Haydn introduction.......2000-06-24

This disc is a very good introduction to some of Haydn's works. Of course, any composer who wrote as much as Haydn can never have even pieces of all their best works on one CD, but this one does a good job of getting a little of everything. The recordings are all very good, and the liner notes are very informative.

3 out of 5 stars the grand experience wears thin.......2006-06-22

I've listened to these particular performances of Haydns masses many times, at first I loved it. The masses sound grand and while it's fun at first it gets old. Many of the masses just sound the same, grand with trumpets, drums, yelling and lots of energy. There is not very many beautiful moments that you hear in other masses by other composers. Also, there is just too many weird surprises and changes in the music, one moment it will sound beautiful then there is a sudden change and it sounds grand and you lose the beatiful melody forever. I don't think it's the performers fault but the composers. I have other performances of music by Gardiner and they're good. I guess you will enjoy this better if you just take it one mass at a time, too much will just wear you out.

If you're just looking for lots of energy and a grand experiance you will like this. If you want something beautiful stay away, you're better off just buying a couple of the masses. Now you have another opinion.

5 out of 5 stars In response to previous reviewer..........2006-03-26

Your ideas concerning the pronunciation of the latin refer to the German pronunciation of the text. Gardiner chose to utilize the Italianate pronunciation, which is certainly not "incorrect." The Italianate pronunciation is typically used in the Roman Catholic Mass, and these are most certainly Masses. Just wanted to clear that up.
In terms of the recording, I too shared some reservations, as I've been enamoured with Gardiner's rendition of the Verdi Requiem (though I think Abbado, on EMI, is more intense, and his soloists are superb), and extremely disappointed with his "performance" of Bach's St. Matthew Passion (that one seemed like he really had to use the bathroom, and wanted to wrap things up ASAP). However, this is quite a fine recording. The soloists are excellent, tempi are nice and brisk (though not rushed, as has often been the case in other Gardiner recordings), and it's great to have these six wonderful Masses together in one set. Though Bach's B minor Mass is THE supreme liturgical work, these Haydn creations are nothing short of extraordinary.

5 out of 5 stars Haydn for the new millennium.......2004-11-18

I am not an unabashed supporter of John Gardiner and his period style with choral music from the Baroque, Classical and Romantic periods. I enjoyed his versions of the Beethoven "Missa Solemnis" and Verdi "Requiem Mass" but did not enjoy his traversal of the Bach cantatas or Haydn's "Creation". This split decision left me wondering if purchasing this set would be wise.

Turns out it was very wise, indeed, for these are startlingly good performances of Haydn's "Big Six" masses -- the Harmony, Helig, Nelson, Creation, Theresa and Pauken (or kettledrum) masses. In these three disks, Gardiner, a group of now well-known soloists, the Monteverdi Choir and English Baroque Soloists acquit themselves well across the board.

There is no mention in the notes or on the sleeve whether or not the soloists use period inmstruments. The strings sound good, not wiry as is often the case with period instruments. The singers consistently use vibrato.

The English notes to this set describe the history of creation of each mass and describe their musical progressions. There are no notes about the performers and arty pictures of Gardiner grace the front panel of cover of the booklet.

I think it is reasonable to call this a new millennium update of the famous Decca-London set from the 1960s by performers including Simon Preston and George Guest. Spiritually, the newer set is a natural upgrade informed by period style -- if not always performed in same -- and produced in 21st century DDD sound. The singers and orchestral members all perform wonderfully and Gardiner's direction is always appropriate with that little bit of reserve always apparent that separates the temperament of Haydn from that of Beethoven.

While there is no question this is a five star offering, I nevertheless have a few minor quibbles with it. The recordings are tastefully produced in modern natural style, which places the singers and chorus equidistant. I would have appreciated a bit more forward placement for the singers.

In addition, I would argue that the pronunciation of the Latin words suscipe and excelsis are incorrect. There are several ways to say suscipe and Gardiner apparently has chosen su-she-pay. I would argue su-see-pay is correct. The choristers and solosits regularly say eck-shell-sis instead of the correct eck-sell-sis, also. Finally, I would have appreciated a bit more embellishment of the timpani in the closing pages of the "kettledrum" mass. It is, after all, named after the instrument!

But these are minor reservations in a set that has all the qualities to be a classic for this age and hold steadfast in the top rung of Haydn masses for another quarter-century. Compared to the version I have heard by Richard Hickox, I would say this set is clearly superior in all ways. I heartily recommend this nicely-priced three disk set to anyone that wants to discover -- or rediscover -- the glories of Haydn's late masses.

This pairing of the Heiligmesse and the Paukenmesse, both composed in 1796, is a fine idea. The Paukenmesse, also known as the "Mass in Time of War" was composed when the Napoleonic War was at its peak; Haydn's wild use of tympani in the Agnus Dei movement and the trumpets and drums elsewhere are a sort-of Viennese answer to the menace. The Heiligmesse also has some martial qualities (its Agnus Dei has great majesty), but it is more soulful and somehow simpler, particularly in its solo vocal writing. Both are wonderfully symphonic. Gardiner and his period-instrument band, soloists, and chorus approach both works head on, with great energy and ideal voice-instrument balance. The drama is present, but so is the piety; the introspective moments of the Heiligmesse's Gloria are given their due, even with the movement's inevitable forward propulsion. Tempi seem just right throughout. These are the versions of these masses which should be in your collection. --Robert Levine

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars warmly recommended.......2006-07-11

First, the bad news. Heiligmesse is the weak link of this album. While certainly written to a high standard of craftsmanship, it's just one big chorus after another (save two or three movements that feature what is essentially an SSATBB chamber choir: not all that much of a contrast, in other words). Haydn wrote the Heiligmesse after his first residency at London, where he was introduced to the Handel oratorios. Haydn learned a good deal from studying Handel's masterful choral writing, and again, the Heiligmesse's choruses are excellent; but JUST choruses becomes rather monotonous. The texture, orchestration, and mood remain constant and unvaried throughout.

The good news, then, is that despite not measuring up to the other works here the Heiligmesse is still worth being acquainted with, and the Paukenmesse and the motet, "Insanae et Vanae Curae," are masterworks. Paukenmesse deserves comparison to the Mozart C minor Mass of 1781; it's that good. It contains majestic choruses as in the Heiligmesse, along with dynamic orchestral writing and intimate, moving arias. And the motet, "Insanae et Vanae Curae," a lesser-known rarity, has a tragic dramatic impact the equivalent of Mozart's D-minor piano concerto or even, perhaps, passages of Don Giovanni.

As for the performances, they are above criticism. Gardiner seems never to miss! He will be remembered as perhaps THE great conductor of his generation.

5 out of 5 stars Haydn Mass Collection.......2005-12-12

When Prince Nicholas Esterhazy died and an unmusical prince took over, Haydn left a lifetime of work behind him and moved to England. When Prince Anton died years later and Prince Nicholas II ascended, Haydn was once again asked back to the palace in Eisenstadt, and Haydn spent his remaining years in familiar territory. One of his new duties under Prince Nicholas II was to write a mass honoring the religious name day of his wife Princess Maria Hermenegild; that day is known as Mariahimmelfahrt. Known as Haydn's six late masses, they are unparalleled masterpieces of Haydn's late oeuvre and show Haydn's kindred spirit that he and the princess shared; this was a duty Haydn enjoyed. It is a shame Haydn didn't write more; the music is imaginative and inspired, utilizing soloist, chorus, and whatever combination of instrumentalists were available to him at the time.

The Paukenmesse, Kettledrum Mass, or Mass in Time of War is a mature work that nods to the compositional styles of the past, but forages forward. So named because of the large role for timpani, it is also important to note the non-religious themes present, that of a war-time composition, does not go unnoticed. The form of the mass is standard: Kyrie, Gloria (in 3 parts), Credo (in 4 parts), Sanctus, Benedictus, and the Agnus Dei (in 2 parts). Of particular note in the Paukenmesse is the lovely cello/bass soloist duet in the Gloria (Qui tollis peccata mundi section), the soloist ensemble in the Benedictus, the nearly scary marching (with timpani solo) in the opening of the Agnus Dei, which literally explodes into a war-like fanfare at the Cum sancto spiritu section, a truly heraldic moment.

Also featured on this disk are two settings (in C major) of the Te Deum text, a text historically set for celebrating special occasions, usually church services dedicated to royal ascensions or marriages. The first, and lesser known, Te Deum of 1763 features brass, timpani, soloists, and chorus as one continuous whole, but in three sections (fast/slow/fast). The well known Te Deum of 1799, also in three sections, features brass and timpani, but for chorus alone. The second setting shows a more mature Haydn, more pleasant melodies and orchestrations with unbridled energy, the first setting more classically-based.

The filler music is from the incomplete opera, Alfred, King of the Anglo-Saxons. The Guardian Spirit aria features solo soprano, sung by Nancy Argento, a lovely piece with an odd speaking portion. Also included is the Chorus of the Danes, a typical operatic chorus of the classical era.

Chandos by now has probably released the entire collection of Haydn's choral works on CD. Here performed on period instruments, the sound elicited is not full and romantic, but instead, a bit more raw. All excellently played, the tempos are swift, the articulation is hard-cut, and the musicianship is fine. The chorus is also excellent, balanced pretty well over the instruments (although I would prefer a drier hall or closer miking for the chorus to speak a little clearer). This is by and far the best performance of the mass and Te Deum's by an all-adult chorus on record (London/Decca has a release with a boys choir) and the most up-to-date scholarly detailed look at Haydn's music by a period ensemble. All important choral works, well performed, easy to recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Exciting, Attention Getting.......2000-09-17

This most exciting of masses is a jewel of choral music. Hickox and his Collegium create a cathedral of sound from Haydn's music. My enthusiasm continued all through the recording. Without Haydn, the wonderful melding of humor and seriousness, sacred and profane, would not be possible in the music of subsequent composers, and the last Haydn masses cannot be compared to anyone else's. And the "Paukenmesse," a favorite of many singers and listeners, reaches those heights that one would listen for in other great choral works, but is often missing.

5 out of 5 stars must buy this wonderful version of haydn's best mass.......1999-07-25

I have been lucky enough to perform this breath taking mass with an orchestra, and it is truly one of the finest works of choral music ever accomplished. If you like choral music, masses, or Haydn in general, then you will absolutely cherish this wonderful version of Haydn's Mass in the Time of War. Raw emotions flood these songs, and your heart will go out to 18th century Austrians when you hear Haydn's musical expression of Austria's suffering during the Napoleanic wars. Superb interpretation by Hickox.

5 out of 5 stars Best of genre.......1999-03-08

This is the fourth volume in the series of recordings of Haydn masses directed by Richard Hickox whose love and understanding of Haydn make him uniquely suited to this task. The series generated an enthusiastic critical response, particularly from Gramophone which said literally "we defy anyone not to enjoy these discs." As far as I know, Hickox set out to record six major masses which were written by Haydn towards the end of his life; as of today we have four volumes, so hopefully we should have two more some time soon. Each of these volumes constitutes a major musical event. In addition to this one, the volumes already issued are: Theresienmesse, Creation Mass, and Harmonienmesse. Hickox directs a sensitive and responsive period orchestra, well matched by the superb chorus and some of the best soloists on the English baroque scene. The result is some of the best Haydn on disc! NB: one of the "filler" pieces on this disc is Haydn's incidental music to Alfred, Konig der Angelsachen, sung by Argenta. There's a recording of Thomas Arne's Alfred which I would highly recommend if you can find it (try www.berkshirerecoutlet.com, if Amazon doesn't kill me for recommending another vendor), it was produced for BBC Music magazine a couple of years ago, with Padmore and Pierard as Alfred and his wife. That's the opera where "Rule, Britannia" comes from, it's excellent!

        5 out of 5 stars A wonderful bargain.......2004-06-27

This four CD set is a wonderful collection, providing some of the most joyful and heartfelt performances of Haydn at a bargain price. While Bernstein's approach tends to be old fashioned and self indulgent when compared to the period performances more common today, one can hardly doubt that Haydn would have disapproved hearing his music performed with such passion and beauty. The three symphonies are rustic and sunny, and while the famous fortissimo chord from the "Surprise" symphony's second movement might be a bit over the top, it is certainly performed with the spirit Haydn intended. The choral works are the gems of the set however. The "Paukenmesse" is superb throughout, and the choral cries of "Dona nobis Pacem" in the Agnus Dei are hair raising. "The Creation" is also wonderfully done, particularly the choruses "Der Himmel Erzahlen" and "Vollendet ist das grosse Werk." Again, Bernstein's tendencies towards a more romantic approach are common, but the spirit of joy and love of humanity that characterizes this work never leaves these performances. All in all and excellent buy.
