Customer Reviews:
CD set is misnamed.......2007-06-08
They should have titled this "classical music for people who love classical music" because most of the selections are typical classical music. The title suggests it would be lively selections of "light classical" music that is more upbeat, i.e. Sabre Dance, etc. I really don't hate classical music at all and have many classical CDs in my collection but I really wanted to hear more exciting selections. I won't be purchasing any more of this set but if you like traditional classical music these are good one.
Do not Buy.......2007-02-21
I do know it says classical music for people who hate it, but serioulsly you would have better luck never listening to classical music again. The recordings are awfull and do not do justice to any of the composers. Buy something else.
Classical Music for People Who Hate Classical Music.......2007-01-30
We love this set of CD's. I just got a new copy because my kids keeping taking our first copy with them so that they can listen at work or in their bedrooms but then I can never find them.
Seek better versions.......2006-12-09
If you are fairly new to classical purchases then compilation CD's can be useful for deciding what to buy next. Sometimes you only need a small taste of a piece to inspire you to buy a release with the whole performance on. The problem with this compilation however is that most of the versions are poor in performance or recording quality (or both) when compared to the best versions and the fact that the conductors aren't even credited on the track listing made me suspect that this would be the case. One of my favorite classical pieces is Tchaikovsky's 1812 festival overture but if the first CD version I had heard had been the finale excerpt that is on this compilation I may not have gone on to buy the whole thing. Luckily I heard Adrian Leaper's version first and Adrian's version is rather good.
My classical CD buying experience is limited to only a couple of dozen discs but I have found that the Naxos and Deutshe Grammophon releases are fairly safe. Avoid any release which does not name the conductors on the track listing or sleeve notes.
It Is What It Is.......2006-10-27
It's fitting that this page is fraught with the same kind of silly snobbery that turns people off from classical music (and necessitates collections like this) in the first place.
Any criticism of this compilation, which focuses on the quality of the performances or the fact that many tracks are excerpts, misses the point. This is not a collection for people who consider such things, nor does it purport to be. The idea is to package as many ultra-famous classical melodies as possible in one affordable collection and market it to people who have never purchased a classical recording. As such, top-tier performances are likely too expensive to be sold so cheaply and are unnecessary anyway. Those of us who already know and love a piece or two can forgive the compilers the inclusion of sub-par recordings, when we are exposed to so many other beautiful pieces for the first time.
It probably comes as a shock for some to hear that most people are not familiar with these classics. We may hear snippets on TV or movies, but are left with no idea as to the composer or historical context. With that in mind, it is extremely intimidating to begin buying classical. I suppose those among us, who so thoroughly dismissed the very notion of a boxed set like this, would have us begin by buying full albums by reputable interpreters. Surprisingly enough though, the majority of people would consider that a tad cost-prohibitive.
To conclude, this is a STARTER collection. It will either affirm a listener's feelings about classical music or lead to an interest in purchasing better recordings. Ideally, I suppose the interpretations would be better, but, for reasons mentioned above, that just isn't in the cards for a collection of this nature. If you're familiar with 50 different recordings of "The Ring" series, or have season tickets to the New York Philharmonic, then this probably isn't for you. For us cretins with limited foreknowledge of classical music though, it serves as a succinct introduction with little to complain about.

Run,Run,Run for Fun,Fun,Fun!.......2005-10-13
This exact set is available in another format for nearly three times as much, and I believe they are the same transfers. So this is the one to purchase. Many of the performances are worth the Set price by themselves. Number 48 is a great symphony for cheering up a blowsy day or attitude, and the others contain tremendous passions - literally in one case - normally not expected when listeners think of Haydn. The sound of the original LPs has been transferred reasonably well, with a degree of fidelity far more acceptable than many modern original instrument performances.
For this price you will have several of the most glorious symphonies of the entire repetoire, and again, 48 is the crowning glory, if I may be allowed a small pun.

Album Description
"The performances are extremely polished and marvellously expressive, so full of vitality with an electrifying feel at times. The superb German orchestra are clearly making a real name for themselves and play this repertoire so comfortably that it could have been written especially for them. Thomas Fey, who is certainly destined for great future success, brilliantly assists the orchestra to communicate his interpretation with freshness and so assuredly to the listener in a way that could scarcely be bettered. Another bonus is the recording, which is rich and warm, yet detailed with superb clarity of sound and perfectly balanced." -Michael Cookson, Music Masters Management
A continuation of the critically acclaimed Haydn Symphony Cycle much discussed in the international music press! The Heidelberg Symphony produces idiomatic performances of these immortal symphonies with a unique and judicious blend of modern and period instruments, demonstrating that Haydn's music - like all great historic music - must dwell both in the past and present to be viable. This sixth volume features three of Haydn's "Sturm und Drang" symphonies. Thomas Fey, born in 1960, studied piano and conducting at the High School for Music at Heidelberg-Mannheim. He was a student of Nikolaus Harnoncourt from 1988 to 1991 at the Salzburg Mozarteum, and also studied under Leonard Bernstein. Fey was named music director of the Heidelberg Symphony Orchestra in 1993. He has led hundreds of concerts in the U.S., Europe, and South America, and made numerous radio broadcasts and recordings. Fey's repertoire extends from Bach to Brahms, and his recordings of Mozart, Haydn, and Beethoven have come in for special praise by many critics.
Customer Reviews:
Bold, energetic performances.......2006-12-17
Thomas Fey has slowly been recording what is planned to be a complete cycle of the Haydn symphonies with the Heidelberger Sinfoniker for Hanssler. This - volume 6 - is one of the best. Those who have acquired previous issues in this series will know what to expect. These are highly exciting, vivid, occasionally brusque performances of three Haydn "Sturm und Drang" masterpieces. Those who prefer their Haydn more "civilized" and elegent should probably stay away. Fey's aggressive approach coupled with the sonority of the period instrument orchestra can sometimes produce harsh sounds. Fey emphasizes the rustic, peasant-like, and rough-edged aspect of the music. And for those of us who see this an essential component of Haydn's music (and part of what makes it look forward to Beethoven's), these performances are must-own. This is playing of bold strokes and sharp articulation with prominent harpsichord continuo and explosive horns. Highly recommended.

The Haydn Symphonic Workshop.......2006-03-03
It would be hard to overemphasize the historical importance of the group of symphonies Haydn wrote in the early 1770's. Often associated with the stylistic label STURM UND DRANG (storm and stress), these pieces represent a leap out of the morass of rococo, often foreshadowing Beethoven and other later music. They frequently exploit minor keys (as do the three symphonies presented here) and highly expressive melodic content, feature contrapuntal along with homophonic writing, use a richer harmonic palette and broader architectural arches than in earlier Haydn, and frequently experiment with the symphonic formal layout. While I find period instruments indispensable for baroque music, I can take them or leave them when it comes to Haydn and Mozart. As it turns out, Ton Koopman and the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, using what would seem to be about twelve players, are just perfect for this middle-period Haydn. They turn out clean, transparent textures and anxious, urgent tempos in the outer movements, while appreciating the heart-stopping emotional expression in the adagios. I especially admire the delicately nuanced playing from the violins throughout. Other complete recordings of the STRUM UND DRANG symphonies on period instruments exist, but at budget price this CD is a contender.

Customer Reviews:
Quite a bargain.......2000-03-06
On the overall, this is a delicious set of interpretations of these symphonies. The one defining word would be "energy." In particular, the finale of No. 48 is taken at the fastest pace I've ever heard (close to a presto or maybe prestissimo), but every note is still clear and audible. There are no notes that are just played; every note is placed strongly. Accents are audible. Surprisingly, however, there is a beautiful amount of passion in the slow movements; the adagio of no. 44 practically aches. At times, as with the finale of no. 44, the orchestra's small size makes it sound slightly tinny and confined; at other times, as with the first mvt. of no. 46, there's a choppy staccato where there should be easy mellowness. When all is said and done, however, each symphony performance is generally spectacular, and getting six performances for the price of three is well worth the money.

Customer Reviews:
Fantastic!.......2005-11-29
I bought this cd set years ago and they're still my favorite cds. Each cd follows a genre (baroque, classical, romantic, or modern and impressionist) and gives a great sampling of some of the strongest pieces in that genre. I don't know what I'd do without these cds.
