Impeccable English Style.......2007-07-13
The Tallis Scholars do their namesake proud.......2006-07-27
These recordings were made 1985-1998, and they all sound great. Included in this collection are most of Tallis best and best-known works: the two Lamentations of Jeremiah, O Sacrum Convivium, Gaude Gloriosa, Tunes for Archbishop Parker's Psalter (which contains the theme that inspired Ralph Vaughan Williams' famous Fantasia), and the incredible 40-part motet Spem In Alium (which is one of the supreme masterpieces of the 16th century). Unfortunately, there are some notable absences, such as the Tallis Scholars' own recording of O Nata Lux. The Mass for 4 Voices, certainly one of Tallis' major works, is also nowhere to be found. Of course, there's only so much music that will fit onto two CDs, but it's still a shame that they couldn't fit at least one of Tallis' masses. Nevertheless, the music that's here is beautiful and powerful.
The Tallis Scholars themselves need no introduction. They're one of the most famous groups specializing in Renaissance music. It needs to be said, however, that if you're looking for "authentic" recordings (that is, recordings that approximate what the music originally sounded like in the 16th century), you might want to look elsewhere. The Tallis Scholars use female singers instead of boys or (ahem!) castrati (though it's doubtful that Tallis would have used or written for castrati himself). And one could complain that these recordings use too many singers for some of the smaller pieces or that the sopranos overpower some of the larger ones (like Spem In Alium). I'm neither an enthusiast nor an opponent of the authentic-performance movement; since we're listening to recorded music anyway, these issues strike me as moot. The Tallis Scholars are experienced and accomplished singers, and they achieve their primary goal: to provide superlative-sounding recordings of important early choral compositions. If you're looking for a fine compilation of Tallis' music or an excellent introduction to Renaissance music, this is it.

Amazon.com essential recording
The disc's title refers to Mary and her son, the Christ, which is the general theme of the medieval chant, polyphony, and poetry that forms this program. The selections are ordered around three 13th century "sequences" that describe Mary's experiences at the foot of the cross. You can get deep into the mechanics and musicological aspects of this fascinating music, or you can just listen. This is music that speaks to everyone, and the mere sound of these voices, whether in their incredibly pure and perfect unison or multi-colored polyphony, can touch places within that otherwise rarely resonate. There's also something reassuring about connecting in this way with struggling souls of the distant past whose cares and hopes were much like ours. They survived largely due to their faith and its proclamation through music such as this. --David VernierCustomer Reviews:

Easter in Medieval England.......2006-05-07
Recorded in September and October, 1994, at the Priory Church, Boxgrove, Chichester, England.
Harmonia Mundi HMU 907125. Total time: 66’45”.
This was, I believe, the fifth recording made by the “anonymous” ladies, and it has a great deal to recommend it: they are in absolute top form vocally, the recording venue, an old English priory church, was ideal for this repertoire, and the Harmonia Mundi engineers seem determined to outdo even their own brilliant prior efforts, capturing the sound with a clarity and purity that just about exhausts the capacity of normal CD sound. The repertoire here recorded consists of Latin hymns, sequences and conductus, complemented by three early English monophonic pieces each lasting over eight minutes – something that the ensemble itself obviously found to be too much of a good thing without some kind of alteration, so they added the vocal equivalent of a reed drone to the later voices of one of these hymns. The texts concern themselves with what happened at Easter, regarding the sacrifice of Christ and the suffering of the cross mostly through the eyes of Christ’s mother, Mary (in the same Catholic tradition as the well-known “Stabat mater” text). This content leads, despite some delightful polyphonic outbreaks, to a certain austerity which is inherent in the pieces themselves, and I would agree with the reviewer who thinks that newcomers to Anonymous 4 would possibly do better to go back to their first two recordings (“An English Ladymass” and “On Yoolis Night”, the second of these with some heavenly Christmas rejoicing) before coming to this excellent but musically perhaps slightly less rewarding disc. Incidentally, Susan Hellauer points out in her fine introductory notes that “by the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries Mary had been transformed into a goddess-like figure”. How appropriately phrased! If, like me, you are a Protestant or evangelical Christian, you may find yourself wincing at the texts, which I would personally want to describe as pseudo-Christian. It is probably best, therefore, to ignore the booklet and just listen to the glorious sound of these delightful voices and to thank God both for them and for the fact that the monolithic medieval culture of Europe has been changed for ever by the Reformation and the Enlightenment.
Astonishing beauty.......2005-10-12
Included in this piece is a processional hymn and other pieces (conductus, sequences, hymns, motets and a concluding antiphon). The sequence is a liturgical form that are often monophonic. The conductus, on the other hand, has many voices, but usually declaiming the same text. Hymns are strophic, with verses repeating to the same music. The motets here involve somewhat strange pairings of chant and songs overlaid on each other.
This is a disc from the midpoint of the career of Anonymous 4, and their voices are in perfect sync with each other.
According to the American Record Guide, 'The singing is absolutely gorgeous. Not only do the 4 sound like angels; they phrase and inflect seraphically as well. You need go no further than the 'O Gloriosa Domina' Processional that starts the program to hear their clear, handsome, seemingly effortless unanimity in action.' The beginning with the processional is significant, for in live performances the Anonymous 4 often incorporated this to echo a liturgical feel to the music.
-- Liner Notes --
This text accompaniment to this disc is very full, so much so that the booklet is not contained within the jewel case, but rather within a slipcover in which both the CD/jewel case and the booklet reside. The liner notes include a description of the work, a brief piece about the quartet, and the lyrics of the songs both in original language and in translation - all repeated in English, German, and French sections.
-- Anonymous 4 --
Contrary to the implication of their name, the Anonymous 4 are not anonymous. This is a vocal quartet made up of Ruth Cunningham, Marsha Genensky, Susan Hellauer, and Johanna Rose at the time of this recording (Ruth Cunningham will later go on to a solo career early, and another member will join - Jacqueline Horner). They came together as a formal group in 1986, and have been ensemble-in-residence at St. Michael's Church in New York City, giving concert series in New York as well as throughout North America. They have been featured a number of times on national media in North America as well as Germany. They then went on to yet more success, eventually performing more that 1000 concerts worldwide.
Their specialty is working with chant, monophonic and polyphonic music, and working with medieval texts. According to one source, 'The group takes its name from an anonymous music theorist of the late 13th century, Anonymous IV, who is the principal source on the two famous composers of the Notre Dame school, Léonin and Pérotin.'
The group ended a touring career of nearly two decades in 2004.
Unearthly Beauty.......2000-07-11
The recording is live and present, very real. The music is eternal and transcendent.
Can't say what spiritual connection there is for me - I belong to an older faith - but there is a spiritual grandeur in this music, just as in Gregorian or Byzantine chant, in Bach, or in any music that speaks from a depth.
If you need music to remind you that there is much in the cosmos that is greater than the daily trudge, that there is beauty that endures, this is a good choice.
Stirring and profoundly spiritual.......1999-09-08

Just how important was early-15th-century English composer John Dunstaple (also spelled Dunstable)? This recording's liner notes have a provocative answer: "He was the most influential English composer outside England before the Beatles." Well, there are no guitars or love songs here--only voices and exclusively sacred music--but it's some of the most glorious church music you'll find anywhere. Its transparent textures are laced with dazzling harmonies and lively rhythmic passages. The music responds especially well to this perfectly configured and balanced ensemble of four male voices--countertenor, two tenors, and bass, supplemented on some works by two additional tenors. They achieve a wonderfully vibrant resonance that gives the music an almost palpable presence. Included is a newly discovered canon that hasn't been heard for 500 years--a spectacular addition to this must-have early music recording. --David VernierCustomer Reviews:
Dunstable and Egyption art.......2002-10-13
The Orlando Consorts sings with marvelous feeling and clarity.
It is a dream comming true to those who want to know Dunstable.
The Hilliard disc. of Dunstable is superb too. Both are highly recommended.
A valuable experience.......2000-06-14
The Orlando Consort sings with great skill. These singers are all quite experienced (a couple of them also sing with the Tallis Scholars and the rest are names familiar to me, though I can't remember right off hand which groups they're associated with). Their tone is good (the countertenor is not shrill), their balance excellent (although with only one voice on a part this is usually not that much of a problem). They blend very well and produce a great deal of warmth while maintaining focus as a whole and distinctiveness between the parts. The tempi and dynamics are good, preserving a sense of mystery and depth about the music. The Gramophone award was well deserved. Incidentally, I wish that the Hilliard Ensemble recording was not continually out of stock, because I'm very much a Hilliard fan and would like to hear that recording for purposes of comparison. Anyway, I can't, unfortunately, offer any comparative information between the two.
A splendid recording all around...

You can't go wrong with Palestrina.......2007-06-14
Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina (4 March 1525 - 2 February 1594) was an Italian composer of Renaissance music. He was the most famous sixteenth-century representative of the Roman School of musical composition. Palestrina had a vast influence on the development of Roman Catholic church music, and his work can be seen as a summation of Renaissance polyphony.
Palestrina left hundreds of compositions, including 104 masses, 68 offertories, more than 300 motets, at least 72 hymns, 35 magnificats, 11 litanies, 4 or 5 sets of lamentations etc., at least 140 madrigals and 9 organ ricercari (however, recent scholarship has classed these ricercari as of doubtful authorship; Palestrina probably wrote no purely instrumental music). His Missa sine nomine seems to have been particularly attractive to Johann Sebastian Bach, who studied and performed it while he was writing his own masterpiece, the Mass in B Minor. His compositions are typified as very clear, with voice parts well-balanced and beautifully harmonized.

Scholars have been trying for years to figure out the occasion for which Monteverdi might have composed his extraordinary Vespers of 1610. At the time he wrote the music, Monteverdi was employed by the Gonzagas, the ruling family of Mantua; while his duties there were secular in nature, it has been suggested that he may have written the Vespers for the feast of Saint Barbara, the Gonzagas' patron saint, and adapted them to honor the Virgin Mary when he published the music. Harry Christophers and the Sixteen perform here a speculative reconstruction of just such a Vespers service. The traditional order of the works has been changed somewhat to match the order of service for the Vespers of Saint Barbara; plainchant, prayers, two sonatas for solo cornett, and a Palestrina motet in Saint Barbara's honor have been added as well. (The hymn Ave maris stella, aimed specifically at the Virgin and with no place in a Vespers for any other saint, is tacked on at the end for the sake of completeness.) The chorus of the Sixteen (two or three singers per part) and the instrumental contingent give a competent performance, but one without much excitement. The soloists, sopranos especially, are a bit shaky (although the tenor duet-trio "Duo seraphim" is beautifully done). Completist Monteverdi collectors will want this unique rendition of his masterpiece, but it really isn't a first choice, even among liturgical reconstructions. (That would be Andrew Parrott's glorious 1984 recording.) --Matthew WestphalCustomer Reviews:
