One of my most-played CDs.......2005-10-13

This is one of my most frequently played CDs. I find it perfect background music for meditation, prayer, reading and other tasks, as well as a good CD that doesn't disturb people at work.

This is not intended to be organised as a church service or a concert performance per se, but rather, as the co-producer Carol Rosenberger states, 'this album is meant to recreate an experience many of us have treasured: slipping inside the doors of a cathedral and finding oneself alone in a vast, quiet space with light streaming through stained glass windows. The organist begins to play gentle music, and one is lost in contemplation...'

As a churchy person, I've often had the experience of working or sitting in an empty church while the organists or their students practiced. This recording in many ways reminds me of that experience. Of course, our organ is a far cry from the pipe organ in Atlanta's Cathedral of St. Philip, with over 5000 pipes (and our church does not have a 5-second delay reverberation, either), 4 manuals and 96 ranks. This Aeolian-Skinner organ is a genuinely stunning instrument, but as with any instrument, it takes the right performer to bring out the fullness of the sound from it.

Todd Wilson is just such a performer. His playing is solid and well-suited for this task, with occasional flashes of brilliance. Mozart's 'Adagio', Bach's 'Jesu, Joy of Many's Desiring', and Barber's 'Adadio for Strings' (here arranged for the organ) are truly wonderful pieces. The programme here is a diverse collection of pieces from Baroque, Renaissance, and later pieces, including folk tunes and a few modern compositions. Todd Wilson is a church organist and music director at Church of the Covenant in Cleveland, Ohio (a city with not insignificant music resources and life), and is also head of the Organ Department at the Cleveland Institute of Music. He has had an international performance and recording career.

I applaud the decision to make this a double-disc set - the producer writes that there was just too much good music to limit the selection. Thus, there is a method to the organisation, given the availability of two discs. The first disc has more simple pieces, easily recognisable melodies and well-known hymn/sacred pieces. The second disc has a bit more complexity of music.

There is a booklet that is particularly designed for young people, so that they may become more familiar with the organ as an instrument, and this type of music.

This is a truly wonderful recording.

Mystic!.......2003-12-28

The Æolian-Skinner organ in St.Philip's Cathedral, Atlanta is the finest example on Earth of eclectic organ...and the last- really-marvellous instrument erected by this firm. Flutes and Erzählers speak directly from Heaven...and the organ, despite electric, seems to have tracker action! Listen to Bach's BWV 731 and 648: they sound like played on a Silbermann instrument!
Todd Wilson is a delicate musician, a poet of the organ and a genius in the choice of the stops.
Buy also the other recordings of this Æolian-Skinner by Robert Delcamp (Naxos) and Alan Morrison (Gothic)...and don't forget that Michael Murray recorded in St.Philip's Cathedral for Telarc the finest rendition of Poulenc's "Concerto in sol minore per organo, archi e timpani" under the direction of the late Robert Shaw.

By All Means Get This CD.......2003-09-06

I found this wonderfully relaxing CD above and beyond my expectations. Do you enjoy organ music, then listen and explore the sacred music of J.S. Bach. This music will relax you: keep your muscles relaxed as you work on a time deadline for a large project, or doing some casual items around the house.

The hiss that one reviewer refers to is undoubtedly the organ's wind supply. The wind can be heard on most organ recordings.

Masterly Dupre and Widor - mannered Franck.......2004-05-07

I recommend this recording very highly. The sound of the organ and playing is magnificent especially in the Dupre and Widor selections. The Franck "Grand Piece Symphonique" however, is another story. After all the scholarship and attention to original playing editions in the past 30+ years, it amazes me that Murray still hangs on to the mannered, in my opinion, highly unmusical, Lemmens' 'legato' style in his interpretation of the Franck work. Buy this for the Dupre and Widor selections, they are amazing!

Best ever recording of the St. Sulpice organ.......2002-12-13

American organist Michael Murray (Marcel Dupré's last American pupil and Dupré's biographer) together with the recording engineers at Telarc have scored a winning combination with this new recording of Cavaille-Coll's *opus magnum* instrument. The three composers represented all have a link to the organ of St. Sulpice. The Dupre works are engaging, with a tight sense of construction and a dash of post-romantic harmonies, quintessentially French. My first impression of the Widor Finale from Sym. No. 6 was that Murray plays it too slow; however upon repeated listenings I find his tempo just right; the piece unfolds at the proper pace, and no details are lost (this was after all Widor's own organ). As it is, truly majestic and truly exciting. The varied sections of the Franck show a great mastery of form and emotional intensity that Murray carries off with aplomb. The recorded sound is AWESOME, from the singing foundation stops, powerful ensembles, lovely solo registers, to shimmering celestes, brilliant reeds and mixtures, and the teeth-rattling intensity of the pedal Contre-bombarde. The recording captures the ideal balance of instrument and acoustics. An absolute "must have" for organ enthusiasts!

Very good from the start to the Finnish...performer.......2001-06-14

This recording captures the subtilety and tremendous power of a large renovated Skinner organ. Rarely, though, it seems there is a bit too much bass, which can obliterate the upper work. The performer quickly shows his command of the literature and instrument, with a large number of French romantic compositions and a handful of more improvisatore-style creations. For some, it might take a couple of listenings in order to fully appreciate this CD; it is not for the faint of heart.

Marcel Dupré Petr Eben's - Judith Handcock, organ.......2006-08-17

This Dupré / Petr Eben looks at first sight, like an unmutual mix of genre, despite the similarity in the period, as twentieth century organ masterpieces. We recall that Dupré made a spectacular performance in United States during the `40th. Here, the elegance in style of Dupré may contrast with the deep and tortuous mood of Petr Eben, but the worst didn't happened.

Otherwise, another aspect of this CD focused on eclectic religious sense of the repertoire depicted by the most outstanding sound of the Saint-Thomas's organ of New York under the hands of Handcock.

Hard at times, and corrosive in style, this organ music mixture is not uninteresting. The smoothest of Petr Eben's work was chosen here, with the "Sunday Music". Depicted as an austere and dark personage, Petr'Eben leads nevertheless the audience to summates, mainly in his Sunday Music, full of sunshine and easygoing mood. At times, this piece remind me the old Sundays of the past, as time didn't seem to go so fast, making this apart weekday a sort of "out-of-time".

Not so popular by organists and organ fans, mostly hang to the French or German repertoire, Petr Eben is still a curiosity for which a great attention worth the detour.

MUSIC FOR THE DEMENTED.......2006-07-04

Judith Hancock's organ music is, to the hearing, what razor blade braille would be to the blind...extremely painful. This music is like that furless, wrinkled breed of dog, so ugly that it's weirdly cute/good. And so begudgingly, I must concede that one must have some sort of talent to produce such an unrelenting tirade of clashing tones. Perhaps the same talent/muse that guides old men to wear black dress sox with sandals or that which urges obese woman to squeeze into spandex for that ultra chic "bursting sausage effect".Yes let's blame it on a tone deaf muse.
Ah,but let us not be to quick to dismiss, for with the right marketing, a cult classic's in our midst! Just think...the S & M practitioners will love it & the chaotic satanists might enjoy it too. Then there's the whole REVENGE aspect - just open the windows, turn up the volume & LEAVE, thusly forcing that neighbor you love so much to listen to music that has surely convinced the suicidal to swallow just one more pill. EGAD!! Murder by music, what a concept!And how about the perfect gift for that someone you just can't stand (but must, due to circumstances). Oh yes my dears, this one's a winner - a prank CD that's the cherry on the sundae...a little music for the demented...and so very much more...

The Title Says It All.......2000-10-13

"Sunday music" it definitely is--at least it was, back when church music was spiritual, elevating, and interesting. My father is a retired church organist, and listening to this CD brought back a lot of fond memories of sitting in the choir loft, watching Dad at the console making blissful music. I grew up hearing this kind of stuff every week--I didn't realize how lucky I was till I got out in the big bad world and found out how dreary and mundane the music is at most churches! Judith Hancock employs a straight-ahead but accomplished technique to bring listeners some authentic church music that is not as often recorded as the big, blockbuster pieces. I would like to see more CDs like this on the market, since you can't get good music like this at church anymore.
