Vienna celebrating in 1979, but it could be 1929.......2006-07-23

This is a live recording of the 1979 New Year's concert from Vienna, captured by Decca in their veyr first digital recording. As usual, there's lots of applause, a speech from Boskovsky to welcome in the new year, and an extra dash of excitement. Boskovsky, the orchestra's concrtmaster, had conducted on 25 such occasions, and soon it owuld be time for famous international conductors to take over the role.

When they did, the echt-Viennese style began to slip away. Strauss waltzes became the province of 'interpretation,' losing much of their lightness and carefree charm. Boskovsky wasn't a first-rate conductor, but he breathed the true Viennese style, and you can hear it here to the fullest. Just sample the rollicking good humor of Auf der Jagd or the souffle airiness of Leichtes blut. I have quite a few New Year's CDs from the Nineties and later, yet this earlier one brings more simple enjoyment than any of them.
