A bit redundant.......2006-06-12

These 33 short selections of oboe music by James Paisible and William Croft get a bit redundant. The London Oboe Band no doubt does an excellent job of reviving these overtures, airs, jigs, minuetes and marches used as the musical scores for various theatrical productions in London.However there is little to differentiate one piece from another in many cases.

The oboe seems to have been a new sensation in the English Restoration Court. Many of these works were composed around the reigns of William of Orange and his wife Queen Mary, or her sister, Queen Anne.

I found the piece, The Queen's Farewell, by James Paisible to be a majestic and serious. This is followed however by David Gordon's contemporary interpretation, called The Queen's Farewell Stomp. Too bad that the piece that wakes you up is at the end of the CD.

I suspect the Oboe experts and seasoned musicians would give this CD a higher score, but I found it to be a bit tiresome.
