If you can gag your way past the album title, this is a most pleasant collection of beloved classical piano pieces that actually is relaxing, I suppose.

I bought this for my grandbabies, ages one and three "to stimulate their brains" This CD set is far, far better the ones touted to do this. I love it, the babies love it, my daughter-in-law loves it! Very rhythmic, lots of fun, top-notch quality.

A good deal to enjoy.......2006-04-15

Though Beethoven could play the violin he was not a virtuoso on the instrument. The piano, on the other hand, was changed as an instrument by him. He was always on a quest for more sonorous and richer sounds and piano makers did their best to oblige. Many of Beethoven's avant guarde ideas about composition and the role of music in self expression started as piano sonatas and piano works. With this in mind, Beethovens compositions for the piano are some of the most outstanding, brilliant, and technically pure works to emerge from any composer. It is impossible not to feel the emotions Beethoven wishes to convey from piece to piece.

The piano sonatas are really self contained dramas. In them, you will hear the expressions of sadness, beauty, rage, and unbounded joy. It is impossible to listen to this collection and not find pleasure in it. The recordings as well as the performers are top-notch. Highly recommended.

Jazzy Ludwig!.......2005-02-17

An excellent set featuring Ludwig van's sets of variations wherein he gets jazzy and swings on catchy tunes! Highly recommended.

NOTE: For those of you who don't understand metaphor: what I'm saying here is that Beethoven used popular operatic hit-tunes of his day and improvised variations on those tunes--as is done in America's original art-form--Jazz. Get it?

A Superb Recording.......2004-07-08

This is an outstanding recording. The Schubert Impromptus are played with such beauty and heart, yet Horowitz is still able to bring in his trademark intensity when necessary. The G-flat major Op. 90 No. 3 is quite possibly one of the most beautiful pieces ever composed for piano, and Horowitz could not have played it any better than here.

It is widely known that Horowitz was not one of the great Beethoven interpreters, so I was very surprised with his well-played interpretation of the "Pathetique" as well as the No. 28 Op. 101. They are definitely adequate interpretations, yet they are really just a bonus to the Impromptus on this recording. I would not recommend purchasing this recording just for the Beethoven sonatas (try Brendel or Pollini). But if you are looking for the greatest interpretation of the Schubert Impromptus, look no further. Horowitz outdid himself....again.

Solomon, very great pianist.......2007-01-19

I used to own an LP of Solomon playing these two Schubert sonatas. I was very pleased indeed to obtain a digitally remastered CD of them. The CD retains all of Solomon's vitality and lovely musicianship. His ease in performance and total mastery of the piano shines through. He was one of the 20th Century's very greatest pianists. The CD was a Christmas present to myself!

Perfect stillness, repose, and peace........2003-05-28

"Solomon's wonderful performances of the great Op 111 ... is unfortunately spoilt by poor recording." So wrote the authors of "The Record Guide" in 1951. Well, here's a chance for music lovers to hear this wonderful 1948 performance half a century later in remastered sound. I reckon it is a wonderful performance, a little fresher in approach than Solomon's 1951 remake. The sound is acceptable, but don't expect much spread in the range of volume. Listening to Solomon playing the opening of the last movement, it seems incredible that a man sitting at a keyboard controlling hammers hitting strings could somehow convey such a sense of perfect stillness, repose, and peace.

Schubert's melodious, sunny A Major Piano Sonata can he heard on this CD in a hitherto unpublished stereo recording from one of Solomon's last recording sessions in 1956. The contrasting, bleak, A Minor Sonata, is heard in a 1952 recording not released until 1962 after Solomon had suffered a crippling stroke. There are physical difficulties for a pianist in this sonata. In the first movement's development section, he is required to play a series of chords which bring his hands into the centre of the keyboard and then, in a flash, repeat the series beginning at the two extremes of the keyboard (at 6 minutes 12 seconds). Most pianist play safe, and pause slightly in order to avoid mis-hitting the outer chords, but Solomon contrives to keep the tempo steady and to hit all the right notes.

The Testament label is gradually re-releasing all the precious recordings made by Solomon. Although they are in the top price range, I for one am happy to acquire and review them.

Lots of Great Music... Cheap!.......2006-03-18

This is a ten CD box set with a huge number of great classical piano pieces. Most are played by Jeno Jando, who gets high marks from the Penguin Guide to Compact Discs and DVDs (highly recommended in its own right for the novice and experienced classical music CD buyer) for his playing on budget labels. You will recognize many of the pieces and they will serve as a jumping off point for additional exploration of classical piano. At roughly $2 each, you can't lose!

The Laserlight label also offers a similar box set of orchestral selections "Meditation - Classical Relaxation". At the time of this writing, that boxed set enjoys a much higher sales ranking than this one. This boxed set deserves to be discovered too. Don't let the low price fool you, these are excellent recordings.

Beethoven: Lettre à Élise; Sonate Op. 110~ Ludwig van Beethoven is a stupendous recording from one of the truly great masters of classical music. Listening to Beethoven's piano compositions is truly a treat and one is fully aware that one is listening to a composer of almost unequalled skill and in my opinion only Mozart, Bach and Wagner can match his genius. Beethoven writes with such intensity that is rare and his music is filled with emotions that sway between happiness, to anger to melancholia and many other feelings in between. Fur Elise is a piece that both lovers of classical music know of and the public in general. It is a wonderful composition and one that should not be overlooked by any means. The rest of the recording is astounding and verily Beethoven was and is still considered a rare genius indeed. His wonderful variations of God Save the Queen is a stroke of absolute magnificence. Highly recommended indeed.
