4 out of 5 stars Should bring Wuorinen's music new friends.......2006-06-28

This disc, a rerelease of one previously available on Koch, is as far as I am aware the first budget-price issue devoted to the music of Charles Wuorinen. Wuorinen was at one time arguably the most prominent younger American serialist composer, though he moved away from serialism comparatively early on in his career, and much of his more recent work flirts with tonality (passages in the Horn Trio here being one of the early examples of this). In this recording, six different one-movement trios (all written between 1981 and 1985) are played by members of the Group for Contemporary Music, a virtuoso ensemble co-founded by the composer (indeed, Wuorinen plays piano in the recording of the Piano Trio on this disc).

The disc opens with a curiosity--the Trio for Bass Instruments. Scored for bass trombone, tuba and double bass, this work spends much of its time exploring the murkier bass regions, yet sometimes bursts into vigorous life, with intermittent hints of jazz rhythms. A slightly more conventional ensemble--familiar to those who know and love the trios by Brahms and Ligeti--appears in Horn Trio and Horn Trio Continued. The first of these is an exhilarating ride through various episodes, most vigorous, occasionally more relaxed, including a virtuoso waltz and one which appears to be building to a fully tonal climax, only for this to be subverted and the work to end quietly. Horn Trio Continued explores largely similar material, with a continued emphasis on rhythmic vigor and mostly fast music with an almost Haydnesque sense of joy. If the material isn't as memorable as in the Horn Trio, this is more a credit to that work than a criticism of its "continuation."

The Piano Trio is, to my mind, a little more anonymous and less dynamic--the forceful personality of the horn suiting Wuorinen's message rather better than the more introverted 'cello, while the Double Solo revisits the horn trio instrumentation in music of a rather different nature--as the title suggests, both violin and horn have largely soloistic material and the piano is more of an accompaniment here. As with the Piano Trio, though, I find it lacks some of the sheer joy of the other horn trio works. Finally, the Trombone Trio returns to the quirky nature of the opening work. The trombone is almost a soloist here, with the pianist largely accompanying and the percussionist (playing marimba and vibes) adding quieter background detail.

This disc should certainly bring Wuorinen's music new friends, particularly with the superb, virtuosic performances on it. If I have a quibble with the disc it might be that--inevitably--six trios written in four years sometimes tend to something of a sameness in style. Nonetheless, the Horn Trio strikes me as a major achivement, and the Trio for Bass Instruments is a wonderfully charming piece.

2 out of 5 stars guitar for sale.......2003-05-14

When will William Anderson trade in his f-hole Humphrey guitar for something new? It must be the worse sounding guitar I've ever heard. Just listen to the tone quality as compared to the piano in the wonderful Wuorinen Sonata - putting strings on a cardboard box would sound better. There is some wonderful playing on this CD, however, can not be recommended due to Anderson's poor choice of instrument.

    5 out of 5 stars Thank Heavens.......2000-12-21

Thank Heavens Anderson goes beyond "merely interpretation" of the Robert Martin solos. He sometimes plays very freely, but the result is stunning. I particularly admire the way he orchestrates the pieces. Anderson pioneered Martin's music. He was the first to perform the entire Diary of a Seducer, both on his own concerts and with the Theater Chamber Players (Washington D.C.) His ensemble, Cygnus, gave the first performance of Martin's Charred Beloved, for guitar, cello, violin, oboe, and flute. That work went on to receive performances with the Theater Chamber Players, and with Parnassus (a New York City group). There is another trio for guitar, alto flute and violin entitled Winter Shadows, which was written for the Cygnus Ensemble. Anderson worked closely with Martin, who was at the recording session of Diary of a Seducer. Also check out Martin's little guitar solo -- Henry's Lullaby -- written for Anderson's son Henry days after he was born. It is on Anderson's Furious Artisan's disc entitled Hausmusik. Henry's Lullaby is embedded in one of the movements of Winter Shadows. I'm a big Martin Fan and a big Anderson fan.

    3 out of 5 stars Diary of a Seducer.......2000-11-23

As a guitarist, I purchased this CD well after already learning to play many of the Robert Martin solos. My first impression was a dissapointing one. In too many cases, the rhythyms are not played with accuracy and venturing out of the realms of mere interpretations. In many cases during the Martin solos, the interpretations lack good use of timbre and controlled dynamic shadings. I hear very little effort being made to bring out phrases within the music. There are so many opportunities to bring life to this music, and William Anderson fails to deliver. I get the feeling that anyone who enjoys this, is not already familiar with the music. I think if one heard a better rendition, it would change opinions. Anderson doesn't say something completely and without being redundant, and he certainly doesn't seduce.

I can't say much about the duets because I can't bring myself to listen to them. Martin doesn't really flaunt the fact that he is writing for 2 guitars. The trios are a different story and are a pleasure to the ears. The Wuorinen piece is great and is the best material on the CD. Even if you don't consider yourself a big fan of Wuorinen, you very well may love this piece.

    5 out of 5 stars Six masterpieces.......1998-10-12

Each one of these six trios (written in the 1980's and recorded here for the first time - believe it or not!) is a gem. Three major additions to the horn trio repertoire, and a trio - yes believe it - for bass trombone, tuba and contrabass. Essential Wuorinen, masterful performances all around.
