This is mostly a collection of music for flute and piano by women composers. The exception, Eight Sketches by Fromm-Michaels (1888-1986), is a brief set of dishwater-dull salon pieces for solo piano. The major work is Hoover's Medieval Suite, a piece inspired by Barbara Tuchman's history, A Distant Mirror, that blends ancient and modern with Hoover's usual emotional intensity. It's worth the price of the disc and then some. Chaminade is her usual pretty, superficial self, and Gubaidulina's piece is too brief to make much of an impression. But the works of Niewiadomska and Rueff both have some substance. Very good performances. --Leslie Gerber
