Fine selection of excellent performances, but no bullet!.......2006-07-18

'Jennifer Larmore, A Portrait' is not really your typical introductory album sampler, as it is relatively short and composed of selections fromjust three operas, all taken from roughly the same period (Handel, Monteverdi, and Mozart). Larmore has done some very nice recordings, but she still has not succeeded in impressing me as much as the heaviweights such as Renee Fleming, Anne Sophie Von Otter, or even Susan Graham or Ruth Ann Swenson. This is not to say Ms. Larmore is not great, it's just that her selection of material doesn't seem to make an evocative album.

I do give five stars to 'Where Shall I fly', but on the most part, I prefer the stuff from the other gals.

Largely drawn from 3 phenomenal recordings: the Monteverdi, Handel, and Orfeo on Harmonia Mundi. Each are appropriately given stellar ratings here on Amazon, and elsewhere. The first time I popped this into my car CD player and heard the first excerpt, from Poppea, I almost choked. A great album and a gorgeous shot of Ms. Larmore on the cover to boot.
