Great Music by a Great Composer.......2003-08-21
This 2-CD mid-priced set, "The Best of Cesar Frank" lives up to its name. It consists of many of the masterpieces of Franck's late years in a variety of forms. It is a convenient way to get much of Cesar Frank's music, well-played, in a single set. It includes a symphony, vocal music, organ music, music for piano and orchestra, and a work for solo piano by a variety of musicians. The CD will repay repeated hearings and give the listener a good exposure to Franck.
The most famous work on this CD is Franck's "Symphony in D minor"
which was first performed in 1889 and presented here by the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra conducted by Willem Van Otterloo. This is a fine performance of a much-beloved symphony. I found it emphasized the romantic, passionate character of the music with its frequent changes of tempo and mood.
But other selections on this CD I enjoyed substantially more than the symphony. Franck's greates work is probably his violin sonata in A which dates from 1886. It receives an outstanding performance on this CD from violinist Arthur Gumiaux and pianist Istvan Hajdu. The violin sonata is in four movements, which develop aspects of the same underlying theme ("cyclic" composition, typical of Franck). The music is glorious, elevated and lyrical throughout, in contrast to most of Franck's music which emphasizes contrasts between serenity and passion. The first and third movements are slow and reflective while the second and fourth are faster. The climax of this work, its final movement, is intense, reflective, and joyous all at once. It is based upon the same theme that Beethoven used as his main theme in the finale of the cello sonata in A opus 69.
Frank's work (and Beethoven's cello sonata as well) is one of the high watermarks of chamber music literature.
I also was much taken with the "Prelude, Choral and Fugue" for solo piano. This work dates from 1884 and it is performed here by pianist Eduardo Del Pueyo. This was my first exposure to this work, and I loved it. It consists of three movements which combine, to my ears, a romantic style, featuring long passages of broken chords and lyrical melodies, with baroque contrapuntal writing. I found this piece and the violin sonata the highlights of this fine collection.
Franck wrote extensively for the organ and this CD features his "Piece Heroique" which lives up to its name together with two other late and deeper works, the Choral in B minor and the Cantabile in B that are much more intense and reflective in character. Listeners who are unfamiliar with organ music, or with organ music beyond Bach, may enjoy exploring this music.
The CD also includes a lovely vocal piece "Panis angelicus" , Franck's "Variations Symphoniques" for piano and orchestra, and a Wagnerian tone poem "Les Etolides" all of which are well performed here and worth knowing.
Franck is an inspiring figure to me in that he persevered, stayed within himself, and produced some undoubted musical masterworks near the close of a long life. This disc is a fine way to get to know his music.
Listeners who wish to hear more of the best of Cesar Franck beyond the selections on this CD might enjoy his Piano Quintet in F Minor (1880) and his String Quartet in D Major (1890).
5 Stars aren't enough!.......1998-11-14

Anda The Master.......2006-09-02
Once I discovered Anda (or re-discovered him might be more like it) I fell in love with his deep sense of musicianship, grasp of musical structure, elemental pianism and visceral yet intellectually weighted emotionality. Because most of his recordings had gone out of print I snapped up what I could, notably the Bartok 3 piano concertos and Mozart complete piano concertos with the Camerata Salzburg. I also got some of the live performance CDs floating around which elucidated his excitement as a performer (along with the fallibility of his technique at times; a technique though that could handle anything thrown at it however).
The most eagerly awaited work for me in this set is the Brahms B-Flat performance which I had unsuccessfully had tried to acquire in LP format for a few years. It was the first thing I listened to in the set and it lived up to my expectations and more. This is a titanic performance of this towering massive concerto. Anda brings out all the fire and gut-pounding power in the places that call for it (e.g. at the beginning opening cadenza's finish before the orchestra tutti starts). He also brings an element of deep elemental mystery to other of the more ethereal passages in the first movement. The second movement it elemental in its power and expression. The end of the 2nd movement is exciting as all get out. My heart raced as Anda came cascading down in the d minor chords at the end of the movement! The cello soloist in the 3rd movement plays with soulfull intensity yet the movement is not taken at too slow a tempo which keeps the overall conception of the work moving with a forward impetus. Anda's entrance is beautiful beyond belief. He conveys a sense of mystery in his playing without it ever getting bogged down in the beautiful details of the notes. The last movement is buoyant and jubilation along with a sense of the delicateness abound. All in all a great performance! The DGG engineering is apparent in this recording with even being so old sounds as if it were recorded yesterday.
The rest of the performances are just as enthralling including 2 performances of the symphonic etudes (an early mono version on Disc 1 and the later stereo version on Disc 5) which are interesting to hear the juxtaposition of an artist's development. Like Julius Katchen, William Kapell and Dino Ciani, Anda was taken from us much too soon.
Awesome Anda.......2006-02-08

A great pianist.......2007-03-10
FULL OF MUSICAL RICHES.......2007-02-26
The two "Sonettos" by Franz Liszt are gorgeous! Alexis plays them beautifully with much feeling. Surprising for me, (I usually don't) I even enjoyed the BIG "Mephistophelian" Liszt sonata in B minor--my god, Weissenberg plays the hell out of that work (no pun intended). One of my favorites, the Chopin Sonata #2 is given a splendid reading--the first two movements are played at a ferociously fast tempo; however, the "Marche funebre" is the most moving account of that movement that I've ever heard! Weissenberg's account of the last movement is most impressive--he never allows the tone to get any louder until the very last profound chord--wow! The Rachmaninov concerto #3 with Georges Pretre and the Chicago Symphony is wonderfully mysterious and very melodic. I also loved his recordings of the Ravel Concerto in G major plus Ravel's "Le tombeau de Couperin suite" and "Valses nobles" hearing Weissenberg play Ravel reminded me of a good glass of Champagne filled with many bubbles and with a great bouquet. The Prokofiev concerto recorded with the Orchestra of Paris and Ozawa is thrilling with its intensity--what virtuosity Alexis Weissenberg has! Weissenberg along with Muti and the Philadelphia Orchestra give a wonderfully "full bodied" reading of Brahms 1st Piano Concerto--I've never heard the Philadelphia sounding any better--it is a great recording of a work that I adore!
I truly loved this 4 disc set (each running over 70 minutes) of some very GREAT piano playing. NO, I did not listen with score(s) in hand nor did I seek out other recordings of these works from my collection to compare Alexis' interpretations with. Instead, I allowed myself the luxury of sitting back in my favorite "arm chair" and simply enjoying these great works for the piano that are played by a Master of the piano! What really impresses me is that Weissenberg plays with very beautiful tone no matter how demanding the work may be--that is certainly the main reason I, for once, enjoyed the Liszt B minor sonata!
By the way, EMI has done a superlative job--the sound of ALL the works is great. Not once, was I aware that I was listening to an older recording. The sound is great!!

Who could listen to Maestro Weissenberg's many recitals during his career and has his recordings knows, that he belongs for all time to the Greatest Pianists . This compiliation was selectet by Mr. Weissenberg himself. CD 1 continues two of the most important piano sonatas . Liszt's b minor sonata 8 the second recording by Weissenberg ) ist tremendous. I have never heard the work from the lento - beginning , the phaenomenal played Grandioso to the Lento end. It is only comparable by the interpretation by Argerich, Barere and the young Horowitz. The 2nd sonata by Chopin is the Olymp of all of the 100 different intertretaions! The concertos of Rachmaninov ( d-minor ), Ravel and Prokoviec find a similar great interpretation in all cases also by the faboulos Martha Argerich . Pretere and Ozawa are on their highest levels . Also the superb Orchestras, especially the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Weissenberg's J S Bach "Nun komm der Heiden Heiland" is a gem !Never before - including Katchen and Arrau - i have heard the Intermezzo 0ßus 118 No 2 by Brahms in this analysis of what Brahms meant in his late piano works- a summary of his life .The 1st concerto of Brahms is a summary of the history of this singular work. The interpretation by Alexis Weissenberg is like a psychoanlysis of the soul in this monument ! When he plays Maurice Ravel I can compare these recordings only with the young Vlado Perlemuter, who had studied the works with the composer . And to all who say Mr Weissenberg's play is too intellectual, too
perfect in every technical detail should listen to the wonderful tone in Carl Czerny's "La Ricordanza" .when this record was made Alexis Weissenberg was just a liitle more than 20 years old. Who could play all these works today ???
Personally , I miss Robert Schumann's master works for piano solo, like the C majoe Fanatsy, opus 17, the"Humoreske" , the incomparable interpretation of his "Carnaval"-an interpretation Glenn Gould had admired so much -,the "Scenes of Childhood" . But : As far I have heard next year will follow the Schumann recordings reissued by EMI . Arur Rubinstein , Artur Schnabel, Mr. Horowitz , Gould, Madame Argerich admired Maestro Weissenberg's Art and personality as well as Harold C Schonberg, Norman Lebrecht or Bryce Morrison .
These 4 CDs are on a high technical level and - I must repeat it - all interpretations are outstanding . With a playing like this , full of passion , logic , poesy and tecnical perfectness Mr. Weissenberg will stay forever under the most impertant Artist and Pianists of all time . And he is a great personality ! Sometimes equally important !

Customer Reviews:
Top notch mostly 1950s mono recordings in excellent sound.......2005-11-10
DG has given the public a great release with this 9 disc set of Fricsay recordings, mostly in mono, but excellent sound. Do not be afraid of the mono sound: it is very clear and balanced, in many cases better than many stereo and even digital recordings made more recently. Included are Beethoven's Symphony 1; Mendelssohn's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" with the vocal duets included; Prokofiev's "Classical" Symphony; Franck's Symphonic variations and Rachmaninoff Paganini Variations with Swiss pianist Margrit Weber; Haydn's "The Seasons" (complete, live performance with Maria Stader, Ernst Haeflinger, and Joseph Greindl); works of Falla, Francaix, Hindemith, Frank Martin, Hartmann, and others. There is a wide variety of music and you will not be disappointed.
Most of these recordings are with the RIAS Symphony Orchestra of Berlin, which Fricsay conducted for the majority of his conducting career. The RIAS orchestra was "Radio in the American sector" of Berlin, a part of West Berlin during the 1940s, 50s, and 60s. Some tracks are with the Berlin Philharmonic, others with the Berlin Radio Orchestra. In all cases, the orchestras play very well, responding with great precision to every nuance of Fricsay's direction.
I believe Fricsay would have wider recognition had he lived longer. He was roughly a contemporary of Karajan, Solti, Giulini, and Bernstein, and is sadly underrated today. Perhaps this collection will help to boost his reputation with a new generation of music lovers born after his time. Highly recommended.
A great conductor's legacy of great performances of music of a wide variety of composers........2005-09-18
Try the $12.00 2CD "great Conductors" set first. At that price you can't lose. I predict that having heard those recordings you will quickly seek out and purchase "Ferenc Fricsay, A Life in Music." Too expensive? Not at all. It's worth every penny. It's easily worth several months of anyone's budget for buying CDs. And the recorded interview with Fricsay, already ill and seemingly knowing his death is approaching, will inspire you even as it breaks your heart. His death as he approached his 40th birthday was an incalculable loss to the Western classical tradition. Yet we do have the recordings -- go and listen to them!
Brilliant "Life in Music" Rescued from the Vaults.......2003-08-13
Now in its second round of the "Original Masters" box sets, DG has chosen to follow-up on the success of the "Great Conductors of the Century" series. They have just released two glorious 9-disc collections of the performances of conductors Ferenc Fricsay and Igor Markevitch, the vast majority of which have been previously unavailable on CD.
This particular set, "A Life in Music," showcases some of the numerous recordings made by the great conductor Ferenc Fricsay for Deutsche Grammophon, many of which have been rare (and expensive) collector's items for years. As the track information is non-existent above, I will try to be of assistance.
The first disc contains Beethoven's 1st Symphony (1953) and the Overture and Incidental Music to Mendelssohn's A Midsummer Night's Dream (1950) both with the Berlin Philharmonic (BP), and Prokofiev's 1st Symphony with the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra (BRSO) from 1954.
Disc two features Mahler's Ruckert-Lieder with Maureen Forrester (BRSO, 1958), and Tchaikovsky's 6th Symphony (BRSO, 1959).
Discs three begins with Respighi's orchestration of Rossini's La Boutique Fantasque (BRSO, 1955) and ends with Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade (BRSO, 1956).
Disc four features the great Waltzes, Polkas, Overtures and Marches of the Strauss Family (all with BRSO from 1949-52). Included here are The Blue Danube, Vienna Blood, Musical Joke, Pizzicato-Polka, Die Fledermaus, The Gypsy Baron, Voices of Spring, Roses from the South, Morning Papers, Annen-Polka, Chit-Chat Polka, and the Radzetky March.
Disc five focuses on Fricsay as an accompanist with pianist Margrit Weber (and the BRSO). Together they tackle Falla's Nights in the Garden of Spain (1957), Francaix's (1956) and Honegger's (1955) Concertos for Piano, Franck's Symphonic Variations (1957) and Rachmaninov's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini (1960).
Disc six shines the spotlight on 20th Century composers. Here we get Von Einem's Zwischenspiel Interlude (1949), Hindemith's Symphonic Dances (1950), Hartmann's 6th Symphony (1955), and Martin's Petite Symphonie Concertante (1950), with Gerty Herzog on piano, Sylvia Kidd on harpsichord and Irmgard Helmis on harp.
On discs seven and eight, Fricsay performs a memorable account of Haydn's The Seasons. This is a live recording with the Berlin RSO from 1961 featuring soprano Maria Stader, tenor Ernst Haefliger, bass Josef Greindl and the St. Hedwigs Cathedral Choir, Berlin.
The final disc, number nine, wraps things up with "Ferenc Fricsay: A Life Retold," a 57-miunte interview complete with excerpts of memorable performances.
Despite the fact that most of these recordings are in mono (only the selections on disc two, and the Paganini Rhapsody are in stereo), the first rate performances more than compensate for any audio shortcomings. Well, I guess the consolidation of the music industry isn't so bad after all, as long as I can look forward to more reissues like Ferenc Fricsay: A Life in Music.

Tiegerman, a pupil of Ignaz Friedman and of the legendary Leschetizky, abandoned his European career in 1931 because of ill health. In Cairo, he created a conservatory and gave occasional concerts. This set consists, for the most part, of broadcast concerts and amateur tapes of his playing in informal settings. They prove Tiegerman a remarkable talent. Even at his farewell concert, we hear, albeit in primitive recorded sound, a pianist of tremendous authority. Two movements from the Brahms Second made a decade earlier give us an artist of power and sensitive pianistic touch. Disc 2 includes some of the most remarkable Chopin playing ever--listen to the lilting Barcarolle, taken faster than usual, so charged with spontaneity and active rubato that others sound lumpy and forced. The Third Sonata is incredibly free, swinging from otherworldly pianissimos to powerful eruptions. Be warned: the sound is often distorted and the amateur tapes sound as if recorded underwater. Those with patience to listen through these defects will be rewarded with unforgettable playing of a legendary artist no longer lost. --Dan DavisCustomer Reviews:
Tragic delights.......2006-06-06
Tiegerman was a pupil of Freidman and Leschetitsky, and a friend of Horowitz when both were in Berlin.Horowitz is reported to have said Tiegerman was his greatest rival in Berlin, the only one who could eclipse Horowitz. Tiegerman was overwhelmed by Roaring 20's America, and at Freidman's urging in 1931 took over a conservatory in Cairo, whose climate was better for Tiegerman's asthma and lifestyle.
The story behind the search for these recordings, all taken from private recordings and radio, and all nearly lost forever, is fascinating. Would suggest you read the liner notes available at the Arbiter Records website.
The music:
Tiegerman's farewell concert in Cairo in 1963 featured eclectic selections: Saint Saens Egyptian Concerto and the Frank Symphonic Variations. The Concerto had always seemed a trifle to me,not worth purchasing; the Variations a simplistic, one-hearing work. As with all the greats, Tiegerman elevates these works, avoiding in the slow movement of the Concerto any semblance of banality in the "egyptian" theme, in fact transforming it beautifully; and creating a concerto from the Variations, exploring depths and detail in the opening section most pianists simply play through unaware, as most pianists apparently have no clue what to do with the opening slow section of the Variations. I will be listening several times now to both, as Tiegerman has opened doors.
There is wonderful, first class Chopin playing here, grand manner, wonderful tone and lyricism, and when required the titanic technique and sonority of his teacher,Freidman. In the 3rd Sonata, where most take the lyrical Largo as an overly- sacchrine ballad, Tiegerman quite originally takes a much quicker tempo, mf rather than p or mp, a vital lied instead. The entire Sonata is heroic, in the manner of the Scherzi . Yet, in the 4th Ballade, Tiegerman finds mainly quiet solitude where others often strain,IMO, to find more drama than there, simply because a "ballade."
Only the first 2 opening movements of the Brahms 2nd were found, from a 1954 live Cairo Symphony radio broadcast.Only the 1958 Gilels-Reiner,IMO, prepares one for what Tiegerman does here, and the young Gilels simply does not bring all the gravitas needed. Schnabel tried to so play, but did not have the technique;by the time I believe Backhaus would have liked to (his last concerto recording with Bohm in 1967), he did not have the technique. Tiegerman simply blazes through these movements, making a case Brahms of the 2nd may have been bearded, but in appearance only, these movements unfinished business from the 1st Concerto,or 1st Symphony, perhaps informed by reflections on a more passionate life Brahms' recent Italian trip may have suggested. Tiegerman takes great risk with such sweeping gestures, faster tempi, and intensity, such symphonic playing, bringing to mind the d'Albert Emperor, and his own teacher Freidman's approach to the Chopin Mazurkas, but then Brahms himself frequently complained his music was not being played correctly, too formally. Tiegerman knows no difficulty, the technique, sonority in this live performance staggering. One is almost emotionally relieved by arrival of,and in great need of, the pastoral 3rd movement which, alas, has been lost.
Yet, in some Field and Faure Nocturnes, Tiegerman is the intimate, lyrical colorist.
Per the generous liner notes: In May,1968 he was operated on for prostate cancer,an operation the doctors botched. One of his last pupils stayed at the hospital every day until another pupil,Prince Hassan of Morocco, arrived and stayed with Tiegerman through the night, feeding him by hand grapes and apple slices. Hassan and other pupils sought from the Egyptian Government a gesture of recognition, but only a low level functionary was sent, who knew nothing of Tiegerman. He came into the hospital room, and upon seeing Tiegerman, immediately fell to his knees and, kneeling at the bedside, kissed his hand.In an instant,he understood who Tiegerman was. And death came May 31.
Tiegerman lost his parents and brother to the Holocaust, his mother throwing herself before one of the camp-bound trains. Teigerman was buried in the Bassatine Jewish cemetary in Cairo, but refugees from the 1967 War in the Sinai who came to Cairo after the War moved into the cemetaries near Ma'adi, overturning or demolishing headstones, and the whereabouts of Tiegerman's grave now remains a mystery.
"Tiegerman was the greatest talent I ever worked with." Ignazy Freidman.
Suggest you give a listen, before you purchase your next Lang Lang, or Volodos, or Lugansky,or Kissin. Sound not perfect, weak in some places, but surprisingly good most often, definitely not an impediment here.
A definite must have!.......2006-02-11
It seems that Tiegermann's fingers function as magic wands over the large percussive instrument, presenting unparalleled possibilities in performances which no one else can imitate.
Ideal Chopin.......2003-10-23
Unjustly neglected genius.......2003-02-23
Divine Music.......2003-02-01
